Since there is interest in this incident, the first post will be used as the highlighted thread and all duplicates will be removed.

A reminder, that these megathreads will be watched and any irrelevant, inappropriate or groundless speculation will be removed. In the wake of this type of incident there is rampant guessing and details that are later unproven. Do not spread misinformation or assign blame.

Do NOT post the X video or screenshots showing the dead officer or the gunman

Man, this is going to get real fucking weird real quick.

The word around French media right now, is that it was allegedly an Albertan resident that supposedly wrote a manifesto. That is going to muddy the discourse for sure if this is true.

RIP to the innocent man that was accidentally shot by the cops and to the officer who was killed as well.

Absolutely fucked up

76

u/Dill_Pickle_Tears Jun 22 '26

SKS’s have been used in police shootings before no?

Hopefully the government remains reasonable (unlikely) or they they at least avoid banning due to the insanely difficult task of collection (more likely)

75

u/RoughDraftRs Jun 22 '26

To remain reasonable, you have to be reasonable in the first place.

We can only hope, but given that an SKS was just used for such a crime, in Montreal, of all places ? We're not even close to being done hearing about it from Poly.

I can't imagine they're not already frothing at the mouth, writing a statement "proving" their point.

7

u/Dill_Pickle_Tears Jun 23 '26

Question is - do we know whether the SKS in this incident was legally acquired?

12

u/Fredarius Jun 22 '26

Yes from memory there was one used to killing a Abbotsford police a handful of years ago.

15

u/Horsecaulking Jun 22 '26

And a shoot out in Victoria between 2 brothers and police

13

u/goodfleance Jun 23 '26

That one was nuts, no officers killed and both suspects dead. The ERT was like 6 blocks away at the time so the response was crazy fast

7

u/GinnAdvent Jun 23 '26

I thought both suspects wanted to engage the police so the bank robbery just a front.

It’s also hard to know if the manifesto will ever come out as-is or if they’ve colluded in some unified message that benefits the anti-gun government. There’s just so many ways for this to go against us unfortunately, but one can always hope there’s some honest people in government with facts

Hopefully this shows how ancient and slow the SKS is and blows a hole in Polys narrative.

16

u/Barbarian_818 Jun 22 '26

Hah! Not a chance. This will only reinforce their desire to ban it as well. The only reason it's been spared hasn't been its age or lack of features. It's been it popularity with Indigenous hunters.

Allegedly this was a targeted attack against the police and the police have already found a manifest.

After seeing how hard they buried Tumbler Ride, I wonder what they’ll do with this.

80

u/Draxish Jun 22 '26

It’s going to largely depend on the contents of that manifesto. A part of me definitely feels like public safety is gonna use this for additional surveillance powers following c-22.

54

u/KalashnikovParty Jun 22 '26

damn we really got hit with the wombo combo. sks, montreal, and manifesto

I suspect the government would *love* to ban the SKS and appease many groups, but with the current court case above their head and the fact the SKS is the most common centre-fire semi-auto (prob like 500k in the country), I think they might hold back considering the pushback already. They’ll be pissing off all the fudds and indigenous now so there’ll be too much pushback politically it’ll go past the tipping point. But then again, this government is stupid as fuck so who knows lol

77

u/Business_Working_703 Jun 22 '26

Yeah fingers crossed that they get scared from political pushback. Also fingers crossed that they get the brain capacity to understand that the shooter is the problem and not the sks itself lol

83

u/DougMacRay617 Jun 22 '26

Lol what political push back? The one that got them re elected after a decade of destruction? This government has the population right where they want them.

38

u/Business_Working_703 Jun 22 '26

CCFR are dragging them to the supreme court for the previous bans already

58

u/gamercast1337 Jun 22 '26

This government will NEVER be held accountable. They were literally found to have used the emergencies act against the law or whatever thr fuck and not a single person got in trouble.

Im sorry to tell you but this ccfr court case means literally fuck all. Its political theater.

34

28

It's not the first time SKS is involved, there was Sannich bank shooting, and 2 to 3 other incidents that I can recall as well.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/article/officer-shot-in-deadly-bc-bank-shootout-details-the-attack-2-years-later/

Poly is gonna use whatever they can to make sure people have no access to firearms in Canada with no logic whatsoever behind it. The only thing firearm owners can do is keep up the fight same as before.

u/Lumindan Jun 22 '26

I still don't think the Liberals will issue additional OICs given the current supreme court stuff.

Not to mention they can't really touch the SKS because it's used heavily by the first Nations.

Not that is any guarantee and don't get me wrong, it's a tragic event but we need more details

26

u/rangedehinc Jun 22 '26

Wont ban it just make it restricted and give natives the special ATC tied to having a status card. The rest of us can go eat shit. Or make it a new 12.x class and give the same atc for "traditional hunting" or some other nonsense.n

180

u/Scary-Detail-3206 Jun 22 '26

They aren’t above blatant racism. SKS for natives but nobody else isn’t out of the question.

48

u/PrestigiousStatus711 Jun 22 '26

We already have race based laws so why not another.

77

u/mischling2543 Jun 22 '26

8

u/bosnanic Jun 22 '26

This is probably what the government wants but carve outs have to be made via legislation not OiCs and after the clusterfuck that was C-21 which they are still dealing with the fallout today they are going to try and tiptoe around the SKS all together.

→ More replies (1)

69

u/CurtWesticles Jun 22 '26

They don't need an OIC. They have a majority now. They can legislate a ban essentially without resistance.

37

u/Lumindan Jun 22 '26

Yes that's true but I actually think if they did that it would hurt their case.

Let's assume they use the same justification as before (weapons of war that are too dangerous). It would only blow a hole in their OIC usages now that they have to actually run it through the house as a bill.

To be clear. That could very well happen post SCC ruling anyways but only time will tell.

17

u/DuperCheese Jun 22 '26

They can exempt FNs from the ban under some lame excuse

10

u/QuebecerGunnie Jun 22 '26

I really think they will ban some more shit. What are the odds that the one gun that they are trying to ban the most since for ever is used in a mass shooting resulting in the death of a police officer. This situation just gave them the perfect cover to continue their bullshit

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '26

21

u/4r4nd0mninj4 Jun 22 '26

Poly has circulated a memo about the SKS during the last OIC ban, and framed it as an "indigenous problem" they needed a "final solution" for, as far as my memory serves me. I can't find a copy of it right now.

62

u/Eat_Cantaloupe_ Jun 22 '26

My bet is the government burrys this one quickly because the only civilian casualty was clearly friendly fire from the RCMP officer in the video

41

u/rastamasta45 Jun 22 '26

Montreal police, not RCMP, but I agree with the other stuff

6

u/AdeptArt Jun 23 '26

I feel really bad for the civilian.

I’m not LE and I can’t say how I would’ve reacted had I been in that scenario, but the civilian was trying to seek shelter from an active shooter and was hit. ;(

23

u/KalashnikovParty Jun 22 '26

If they ban the sks there is no way they can actually grab them from civilian hands. The gun is so common with about 500k units in private hands. Something tells me they don’t have the resources to kick in 500k doors.

→ More replies (1)

58

u/Eat_Cantaloupe_ Jun 22 '26

The SKS really isn't any more powerful or capable than any other hunting rifle, it was used because there are just more SKS rifles than any other gun in Canada. Honda civics are used in drunk driving because they're a common car, not because they're preferred by drunk drivers, are they going to ban Honda civics? Of course not. There are more SKS rifles than all of the guns they're trying to buy back combined, and they can't even do that. A full ban like they did with AR15s would be logistically impossible.

20

u/Natural_Comparison21 Jun 22 '26

That’s debatable.

The SKS estimates in Canada are anywhere between 250,000-1,000,000 on the high end. The number of impacted guns from the gun bans are estimated to be as high as 1 million. Most people would say there are between 500,000 and 750,000 sks’s in Canada. Which I will say for one rifle is a lot. I can’t think of a single gun that could rival those numbers apart from maybe the Ruger 10/22? Just because those have been in Canada for so long.

11

u/Dependent_Account603 Jun 23 '26

Lee Enfield rivals it. Also the official estimate for number of guns in Canada is based on the registry, so likely half.

The government knows pretty much how many SKS rifles there are through import records. They don't release this even tho there's been information requests on it. As most SKS rifles got imported after they started keeping tabs on imports. Lee Enfield is anybody's guess as most were imported pre import records.

29

u/rastamasta45 Jun 22 '26

I think there’s a potential this sort turns into police training nightmare, the only civilian death and its from a police officer point blank and on video

Combined with the public already pissed about RCMP failing Tumbler ridge, police media firestorm

16

u/Natural_Comparison21 Jun 22 '26

Yea this is looking like it could very easily be turned into a “The police fucked up at responding to this.” Which ngl they objectively did. They not only lost someone due to lack of proper training (atleast that’s my understanding.) but actively killing a civilian. Technically this struggles to be even defined as a mass shooting. As the shooter only killed one person. The other death was because of the cop.

5

u/nulstate77 Jun 23 '26

17

u/DJJ0SHWA Jun 22 '26

The civilian that died was shot by one of the officers who got startled. Horrifying footage. If anything comes out of this, it needs to be better training for police.

11

u/rastamasta45 Jun 22 '26

It’s legitimately bad, the shooter fully ignores civilians and the one civilian that dies is point blank from a cop. I know adreline and such plays a role but in the army they told us “that’s not an excuse” if you kill a civilian you will be charged, it’s on you

23

u/Cre_AK47 Name Prohibited by OIC Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

My comments: Glad the shooter was taken out quickly, but watching a huge amount of videos outside of Reddit (the website in question for a fun fact, is actually an exiled subreddit that used to be on here), that this seems like a Justin Bourque type shooting. If you watch the videos, there was many points he came across random civilians and didn't go after them. He only went after cops.

Also to note, and this is a major L and in my opinion, reflects the absolute sheer Insanity of the handgun "freeze", but one of the SPVMs officers hiding behind cover shot a civilian that had walked up to her wondering what the hell is going on, and it was unequivocally caught on video of the officer just shooting a civilian point blank with her service pistol... The civilian died...

I'm sure the cop is feeling absolute horrid deep regret and is traumatized for not taking just a second longer to identify if this person is a threat just after seeing their colleague killed not even 30 seconds before, but none the less, situational awareness training as well as effective firearm use is clearly not something that's emphasized within the SPVM.

Most cops look like they only receive firearm training like once a year and it's maybe like less than 100 rounds and it's pretty evident based on the amount of Exchange between the gunman and the officers on how poorly equipped they are. This handgun "freeze" is making our LEO brothers and sisters ineffective in responding to rare events like this where situational awareness and precision is absolutely needed when there's no "takesies-backsies", such as killing an innocent civilian... Also, I'm dumbfounded that AR-15s (or patrol carbines), are not standard equipment in every police vehicle. Where I am in Ottawa, Ottawa Police are standardly equipped with AR-15s in most Patrol Vehicles except for like Traffic Unit crusiers, where they can quickly and effectively respond to incidents like this where you do not want to have a situation of a handgun versus rifle fight.

14

u/Commercial_Hold7067 Jun 23 '26

>"Only the police should have guns."

>"Oh yeah the police will also fucking shoot you lmao"

Hope that cop is taken off the force and tried for manslaughter at least.

I mean per capita they have more mass shootings than Ontario has. Political violence and extremism has always been a problem with Quebec. The amount of mass shootings/high profile gun incidents in our history show for it.

FLQ, Denis Lorte, Polytech, Concordia, Dawson, Richard Henry Bain, Quebec City Mosque to name a few... There's a reason why the province overall is anti-gun more than any other province in the country.

"The alleged gunman who killed a Montreal police officer during a shooting in Côte-des-Neiges Monday has been identified as Seth Scott Hatfield, 25, of Lethbridge, Alberta.

His name was released Tuesday by Quebec’s coroner, which also identified the two other people killed in the attack: Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, a Montreal police officer, and Michel (Michael) Mizrahi, 68, a bystander caught in the crossfire."

Hopefully there will be a thorough investigation here.

What’s actually crazy wild, this guy straight up fits the redacted RCMP report a few years back about the future of canada and that “once the youth realize they have no future, it will lead to violence”

Dude is straight up anti society, this is it, the youth collapse. Will be interesting how our LPC overlords spin this tragedy

13

u/Office_Responsible Jun 23 '26

Lots of angry young people right now. I’m not surprised some are taking to violence. I’m fairly young and in my peer group people are struggling hard right now. They blame the government for what’s happening, although I will note some of their issues are purely related to poor choices.

I am very interested to see what the LPC says, or will it be buried?

9

u/rastamasta45 Jun 23 '26

Or misdirected, the LPC never let a good tragedy go to waste

"Did you know [the shooter] or have information that can advance the story? write to me..."

It's probably just me, but I find this kind of thing to be despicable. This is ambulance-chasing behaviour.

And then they have the gall to turn around and complain about not having any money. This kind of shit won't make me disable my ad-block anytime soon.

54

u/rastamasta45 Jun 22 '26

Legit wild how other subs are defending the officer for domeing a civilian saying things like “it’s easy for you, this was a stressful situation” and “how can it be a training issue, it’s just unfortunate”

I didn’t know that cops can now shoot civilians when shit gets real or crazy. So when swat kicks a door in they should shoot the hostage because the bad guy startled them. Training literally removes your nerves so you don’t do what that officer did. Absolute training failure and failure on the officer.

23

u/King-Conn Jun 22 '26

Yet they will clown on any American officer who makes a mistake. This is a failure in training.

23

u/Commercial_Hold7067 Jun 22 '26

It's Reddit. The ideology comes first. It's a female police officer and so if they concede that this particular female officer did something very wrong, they feel it leaves them open to all female officers being criticized. And so they have to look at an officer shooting a civilian point blank and say, "Well uh actually chud she did nothing wrong because you (an untrained civilian with no responsibility or duty to protect citizens) would probably do the same!"

Turns out the shooters manifesto mentions hatred for Pornhub, mentions hatred for capitalism and his love of communism, and mentions the support of "free-palestine" movement.

16

u/eekay233 Jun 22 '26

Well shit. Pornhubs headquarters is in CDN.

11

u/RodgerWolf311 Jun 22 '26

Its HQ is in Montreal.

11

u/eekay233 Jun 22 '26

CDN , Cote de Neige.

The shooting happened at Declaire Blvd and Westbury Ave.

PornHub HQ is 7777 Declaire Blvd. About 2-3 blocks away.

SKS shooting in Montreal by a guy allegedly from Alberta? It's a god damn psyop. 😂

RIP to the innocent lives lost.

Thats convenient

7

u/BigheadL95 Jun 22 '26

Do we know if this SKS was legal or stolen?

4

u/HappyCan7250 Jun 24 '26

Im guessing we won't ever find out. SKS is the kryptonite of the LPC because of the natives.

We all suspect an SKS was likely used in tumbler ridge, but they never said. This time there is photos, but the general public will have no idea what it is

6

u/MapleMonica Jun 23 '26

Why does our police force have such inadequate training?

7

u/Commercial_Hold7067 Jun 24 '26

I love the "only police should have guns" crowd not understanding that our police are more dangerous to innocent bystanders with their guns than PAL holders are.

So I was browsing through Canada subreddit to see what the reaction is. The manifesto by the suspect actually spur quite a bit of debate there because of the shooter's belief and political alignment. Many assume the alignment to be right, but it seems to be left leaning and involvement of capitalism which spawns the world that we have now being managed be the corporate elites.

Though some people there really did raise some good point regarding to police training and with civilians involved situation. Here is one of the comments I took note of.

Redditor A

Why is no news outlet covering the fact that the only civilian who died was shot by the cop, and then after she killed the guy she ran away screaming.

We need a serious discussion about hiring a real police force in this country. The only thing our police are good for is handing out fines to working class people. They are utterly incompetent at doing anything to protect public safety.

Redditor B

I don’t think it is. I very rarely defend police but she’s not really to blame in this instance imo. Did you watch the footage? She had to make a life and death decision in a split second and I’d guess that most people in her position would assume it was the gunman appearing from that angle. Not to mention she just watched her colleague get shot/murdered which obviously raises the stakes.

Redditor A

The key here is “most people”.

She is a trained professional public defendant. If we’re giving people state backing to use lethal force as part of their job description then those people better be vetted and highly qualified.

If we aren’t going to have highly qualified and trained individuals in those roles then we should all have the right to defend ourselves because the state is clearly proving itself to be incompetent and incapable of doing so.

It’s an incredibly serious topic and not one that should be brushed aside because “she panicked in a life and death situation”. When doctors, or pilots, or rescue teams panic and make the wrong decision they are still heald accountable for their actions.

Redditor B

Fair enough. I agree with your points here but I do believe we all already have the right to defend ourselves.

I know that this sub commonly discussed about the right to defend ourselves, but when it comes to use firearm as last resort, this will usually result the firearm owner to drag through the mud just to fight the legal battles. Not to mention that the police are often out stretch and takes awhile to arrive on scene.

I guess that's Canada for you.

3

u/yummybunnybear Jun 25 '26

Imagine the outrage against the police if it were a white male accidentally shooting a black civilian. It's disgusting how some people are blaming the civilian.

16

u/Substantial_Field246 Jun 22 '26

People, remember there have been multiple high profile killings with the sks since 2020 and it still remains unbanned , I’m not saying they won’t but they have had plenty of opportunities to do so .

Oh brother. Here we fucking go with this braindead shit. Prepare for lawmakers to ban “AK47 style assault rifles🤓” meanwhile its an sks.

Cars kill people too, let's start banning them

Some lunatics really have to ruin it for everyone else.

For sure SKS is going to be in next ban wave.

15

u/Superb-Head4434 Jun 23 '26

All this does is it further proves that banning guns doesn’t work. No matter what bad guys will find a way.

9

u/WeightedDips95 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

Meh i mean I think this will show the antigun crowd "see we need to ban all models or guns!"- since it was committed with a semi auto that wasnt banned.

The fact is that someone can always do this with a legally acquired gun, although its exceeedingly rare in Canada thanks to our licensing system.

I think the bigger thing to point out is that shootings are more common despite gun laws becoming more restrictive, most of the shootings being preventable due to blatantly awful police work or addressing the underlying social malaise, and in this case I dont think the type of gun even mattered. He "only" (still a tragedy) killed one person. People have killed many more with other means or even manual action guns.

15

u/Cre_AK47 Name Prohibited by OIC Jun 23 '26

There's been many high profile incidents with the SKS the last 5 years or so. Doesn't nullify the fact it's logistically impossible to ban the SKS.

8

u/atf_annihilator69 Jun 23 '26

they dont give a damn about logistics. if they did, the first bans wouldve actually done something. its about preventing future ownership to law abiding citizens

8

u/Cre_AK47 Name Prohibited by OIC Jun 23 '26

Logistics also includes legal frameworks. Examples include indigenous rights guaranteed by the Constitution and that suppressing the most popular hunting tool among indigenous people, could be seen as a violation of their treaty/hunting rights.

2 things can be true though.

5

u/Natural_Comparison21 Jun 23 '26

I feel like they wouldn't want another court case even if they end up winning the current CCFR Supreme Court Case. It casts them in a rather bad light.

9

u/Commercial_Hold7067 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

It is not logistically impossible to ban any firearms in Canada.

>But muh lots of people have them!

And? As soon as they ban the firearm it can no longer be legally sold or transferred. That means no new models legally come into the market, and no one who currently owns one can transfer it to anyone else, take it to a range, or take it out hunting. It's dead in the water and over time they leave circulation as owners die off and are unable to legally pass them on, they're found in raids in illegal ownership, etc. Their kids don't have a PAL, aren't comfortable taking them, or if they do take them they get found.

People seem to not understand that these measures are not short term, they are permanent and long term methods of weeding out firearms from the population over decades. The idea that the government cares that they won't immediately get your gun is asinine. They know that over time, civilian population firearms ownership will be reduced and chopped down to fudds only and whatever other things like central storage they want to implement.

5

u/prestigeful Jun 23 '26

My guess is as good as someone else's but I wouldn't be surprised if they try to restrict all semi-automatic rifles above .22 LR at some point. Even if it's a very long term job.

weird right?

This is terrible, please don't watch videos about this.

There is one very disturbing video where one of the cops appear to shoot a civilian they misidentified.
Some cops where visibly struggling with firearms handling under stress (I don't blame them at all, I point their employer who send them out there with minimal training)

I'm gonna be upset all day now; the classic politician will blame guns instead of how our society is broken and breed those monsters that do these attacks (either with cars, trucks or guns, whatever is easier for them to access)

12

u/Commercial_Hold7067 Jun 22 '26

Update: Lockdown lifted after civilian, police officer and suspect killed in Côte-des-Neiges shootings

Kind of odd to see this many inferences by a news outlet.

I will only time will tell as more evidence come about.

4

u/CenturionV Jun 25 '26

This unfortunately isn't the first time an officer has been killed and an sks was used. In 2023 two Edmonton Police officers were killed with an SKS that had been illegally trafficked to a 16 year old.

I believe I remember poly trying to use it to argue for the SKS prohibition back then and liberals resisted shockingly, though they vowed to find some other "solution". If they were looking for an incident were police were killed with the SKS they had that reason available long before this incident.

I think first of all they know the sks numbers are extremely high, it may actually be the most common centrefire non-shotgun, single model, firearm in Canada, and it is incredibly common for hunting among native groups so any ban of it feels targeted to them no matter how it works. Not only will they not get them back in any great numbers, they risk very unpopular charges and arrests of various native tribes members who will no doubt (rightly) tell the government yo pound sand. It's nothing but L's all the way down.

4

u/Mr_Canada1867 Jun 25 '26

The 16yr old used a GSG STG-44, not an SKS.
