Some lunatics really have to ruin it for everyone else.

For sure SKS is going to be in next ban wave.

All this does is it further proves that banning guns doesn’t work. No matter what bad guys will find a way.

Meh i mean I think this will show the antigun crowd "see we need to ban all models or guns!"- since it was committed with a semi auto that wasnt banned.

The fact is that someone can always do this with a legally acquired gun, although its exceeedingly rare in Canada thanks to our licensing system.

I think the bigger thing to point out is that shootings are more common despite gun laws becoming more restrictive, most of the shootings being preventable due to blatantly awful police work or addressing the underlying social malaise, and in this case I dont think the type of gun even mattered. He "only" (still a tragedy) killed one person. People have killed many more with other means or even manual action guns.

There's been many high profile incidents with the SKS the last 5 years or so. Doesn't nullify the fact it's logistically impossible to ban the SKS.

they dont give a damn about logistics. if they did, the first bans wouldve actually done something. its about preventing future ownership to law abiding citizens

Logistics also includes legal frameworks. Examples include indigenous rights guaranteed by the Constitution and that suppressing the most popular hunting tool among indigenous people, could be seen as a violation of their treaty/hunting rights.

2 things can be true though.

I feel like they wouldn't want another court case even if they end up winning the current CCFR Supreme Court Case. It casts them in a rather bad light.

It is not logistically impossible to ban any firearms in Canada.

>But muh lots of people have them!

And? As soon as they ban the firearm it can no longer be legally sold or transferred. That means no new models legally come into the market, and no one who currently owns one can transfer it to anyone else, take it to a range, or take it out hunting. It's dead in the water and over time they leave circulation as owners die off and are unable to legally pass them on, they're found in raids in illegal ownership, etc. Their kids don't have a PAL, aren't comfortable taking them, or if they do take them they get found.

People seem to not understand that these measures are not short term, they are permanent and long term methods of weeding out firearms from the population over decades. The idea that the government cares that they won't immediately get your gun is asinine. They know that over time, civilian population firearms ownership will be reduced and chopped down to fudds only and whatever other things like central storage they want to implement.

My guess is as good as someone else's but I wouldn't be surprised if they try to restrict all semi-automatic rifles above .22 LR at some point. Even if it's a very long term job.

This isn’t a maybe. It’s 100%

Apparenty the lunatic explicitly addressed weapon selection based on jurisdiction in a 100+ pages manifesto. He wrote that Canadians face a much narrower range of legal firearms than Americans, yet still recommended military-design rifles and carbines as the most direct and effective option.

For him the SKS was the answer to that constraint: the most capable military carbine legally obtainable in Canada with a standard PAL license.

Also side note, two motivations converged in one weapon: yes he picked the SKS as the best legal military option available in Canada, but it is also a Soviet rifle ideologically consistent with his Marxist-Leninist identity.

So he didn't stumble upon the SKS: he selected it deliberately as the optimal military weapon within Canadian legal constraints which is worse for us than I thought.
