Try to call CFO to initiate a transfer but the hotline keep hanging up on me after waiting 30-50 minutes. Really frustrating and waste of time. Anyone have the same issue?

What is actually checked during the 28 day "background check" phase? Is it just a check of your official/criminal records, or do they go looking for your social media etc too?
I'm not worried because I have nothing to hide and don't get involved in politics online, but I'm just curious what they go looking for.

First step is take a gun safety course for your PAL / RPAL - check into who offers courses in your area.

I'm a dt Toronto bum as well.
As mentioned before by others. First step, take the safety courses. Second step, get ready for a lot of waiting. There are closer ranges, but the issue will be that ranges are so under supplied that they're all full up with members. If force got friends and family who partake in the sport, they may be able to give you s member referral type thing to get into a range. Or at least be able to bring a guest.

As most will suggest, just bite the bullet, pardon the pun, and do both the restricted and non restricted courses. It's far easier to have it done with than realize a bit later something you may want is a restricted firearm and not be able to get it until you "upgrade" your license which will take another long sellers of waiting patiently.
Heads up, lots of stuff is really backed up and slow in Ontario. Just be patient.
Edit: also, start saving $$$ lol. You'll need it if realize you really like the sport

Hi ya'll. First time buyer of two handguns here. I recently panic-purchased one handgun in person at a local gun store, and also panic-ordered another one online from Gotenda. I was told that the CFO would email me for the transfer process or something when I was at the gunstore. I take it it's the same process for an online purchase? I'd like to make sure I'm not missing anything here. Was I suppose to do paperwork after putting a deposit whether you buy in person or online, or is it just a waiting game for the CFO to mail or e-mail me? Or did I just answer my own question? Any correct answers would be much appreciated. Thank you.

If you buy from a retailer you don't have to do anything on your end.
You will get an email for each transfer when they are approved. Once you get the email, you can go to your local store and pick it up. When you get the email for the other one, the store will also be notified and they will ship it.

The retailer should email you the transfer reference number. The CFO will email you in six months with the completed transfer.

Hopefully this is a good place to post this:
Still awaiting approval of my PAL/RPAL. Application received on Mar. 20th this year... my wife received hers already, end of July... with our last name misspelled. We contacted the CFP to figure out how to go about fixing the misspelling on the license and they pointed us in the right direction (mailing stuff in, etc) and asked them to correct the last name on my app (just in case), considering mine had yet to be processed. They couldn't offer me a timeline on how much longer mine would take. I'm just curious why my wife would receive hers (again, misspelled, makes me believe they completely neglected a background check) and mine is still being processed.
Any insight? Sorry for the long read!

Anyone got eta on restricted transfer times in bc. Ordered one handgun in july and another few weeks ago before the ban. Just wondering on timeframe and if it takes until after the freeze i will still get my handgun?

You're looking at 4-6 weeks transfer time in BC. Any handgun transfers done before the handgun freeze comes into effect will be honoured.

Thanks for this info. I’ve been wondering myself as I just bought a pistol this weekend. I’m curious, where did you hear that pending transfers will be honoured?
I looked at the text of C-21, and I’ve been a bit worried that, the way they’ve worded it, it looks like certificates of registration straight-up cannot be issued to individuals once the law is passed. Obviously that would cause huge problems for people who have paid for their firearm and now can’t get it, as well as businesses who, through no fault of theirs, can’t give the customer what they bought. But then again, I get the impression that the government thinks that handgun owners are villains and they might not care about screwing them over like that.
If I have to wait several weeks to get my pistol, I’m fine with that. I just don’t want to find that I’m SOL once the law passes.

Pro tip for anyone; use CLP wipes! I just used them to clean one of my guns today and it was the easiest cleaning I've ever done. It's so much easier to get into the creases and they picked up way more carbon than my old rag did before.

Hey all, new to gun ownership.
I just bought a Mossberg 590 (full length 8+1) online and am waiting for it in the mail.
While I'm waiting I am looking for a tactical flashlight to attach to the shotgun. Does anyone have any suggestions? Like I said, I'm new so I don't want to buy something that won't fit. Will I need to adjust the gun at all or does it come ready for attachments?

Since it doesn’t seem to have any pictanny/Mlok mounting points you’ll need to find another method to mount it to the tube. There might be clamp on direct flashlights or you might need a pictanny rail mount.

Bought 2 restricted handguns from a retailer May 30th in BC. STILL NO TRANSFER! It’s been 3 months, has anyone else waited this long? I keep seeing people saying they got theirs in less than 10 weeks. I called and got through all they said is “yup the transfer has been initiated, keep waiting”. This is ridiculous

Last I saw, Ontario is sending automated messages saying their current backlog is 9 months.
3 months does seem long for BC though, especially for a May purchase.

Am I able to display my (now) prohibited AR on the wall with a trigger lock? my room is locked and the front door of the house is locked. Ammunition is locked in a safe in the garage along with the mags.

Not sure about prohib status, but generally speaking 'display' includes more than simply a trigger lock.
If I remember correctly from course;
- Display rack securely locked to house.
- Gun securely locked to display rack.
- Gun locked via trigger or cable lock.

I’m moving within the province and only have one restricted, if that makes any difference in the email. You're supposed to indicate when (the dates) you are moving and from what address to which new address so they can issue an ATT that covers the things.

They know you have a restricted. Just ask for an ATT because you are moving. You don't need an ATT for non restricted, and they already know how many restricted you have and which ones.

There is no registry, stores need to keep records and private sales need to verify your PAL online.
Store will take care of it, private sale you will need to provide PAL, DOB, and the same email as used with CFP.

Is it a rifle or handgun? Rifles don't need to be registered (unless she lives in QC). If it's a handgun talk to a lawyer because it's a serious crime to have an unregistered handgun (full stop, don't keep reading or talking about it).
Does her dad have a pal? If yes he should just legally transfer it.
If he doesn't, Did she get her pal before or after may 18 of 2022? If before she could have taken possession before May 18th and there's no paper trail. If after then someone broke the law by giving her the gun without getting a transfer number... Not sure if she did by receiving it.

Depends when she got the PAL. Before May 18th, or after? I mean no one would ever know, minus who you told here. Just keep it hush hush and literally no one would ever even bother to run the firearm and check the reg. Especially on an old farm .22, it's not like it's a popular Black Assault Rifle designed to kill as many as possible in the shortest amout of time, no one would question it.

How long does it take to transfer a restricted handgun? I know it varies, but the buyer is getting it antsy. It has been a week and I initiated the transfer (Saskatchewan) to him (Buyer in Quebec).
Any insight to how long it takes? I obviously cannot ship until the transfer completes.

What happens to a restricted firearm’s registration mid-transfer (private sale)?
Once you get to the point where the recipient is waiting for the new registration to come in the mail, is the old (i.e. seller’s) registration now invalid?
My partner is going to transfer some handguns over to me before the freeze but we’re wondering if they will need to stay put in the safe until the transfer is complete.
Either way we will go through with the transfer but would like to know if we should avoid registering for upcoming matches.

Please check the status again at a later date." mean in terms of how much longer? Looking at others' timelines I am getting my hopes up, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me the time between seeing this and having their RPAL issued.

Depends on the province. Mine was charged August 12 and approved August 26. But I called in to inquire where it was in the process and it was back from Ontario CFO just needed a photo to be scanned in and then approved. Completed over the phone cause I called.

I had a store tell me that they aren’t giving out transfer numbers for restricted purchases (Aug 5th). Then I emailed to confirm that one had even been issued and haven’t heard back. They’re one of the bigger stores and I received the previous handgun I ordered from them, but just felt like it was a little weird that they weren’t giving out the transfer numbers.
Anyone else have that happen?

That seems a little weird to me. I’m a newbie to this and only recently bought my first handgun, but the store printed the transaction number right on my receipt and told me what it was. From a legal perspective, I might try telling them that submitting the transfer for you is part of your contract of purchase and, since they haven’t actually given you your purchase, you’re entitled to evidence that they are actually following through on their obligation under your contract of purchase (i.e., a transfer number), especially since I have seen a few posts on here mentioning that there have been delays in the store even submitting the transfer. You might find some way of wording that argument that comes off as reasonable so they see that you’re right and don’t get their blinders on because you’re being a prick.

Probably FOC, I've read they gave all sorts of excuses from being too busy, to CFO telling them not to, despite other stores providing it no problem.

First time restricted owner (to be). I bought a firearm through a local gun store, and it's waiting there for transfer approval. How will I know when I can pick up my firearm? Will I get a letter in the mail, or will the store cal me?

I just bought one this weekend as well. From what they guy at the store told me, both you and the store will get an email, and then you’ll be able to pick it up. Several days later, you’ll receive a new PAL in the mail that will include special conditions allowing you to travel to and from shooting clubs with it. Anyone with actual experience, please jump in if I’m wrong about any of this.

That is correct, both the buyer and seller will receive a transfer notification by email. Some sellers have signalled on forums that they sometimes do not receive the notification so I would suggest you forward them a copy once you receive it. The transfer notification allows you to go pick up your firearm and bring it home. At that point you will need to wait for your updated RPAL (with transport conditions) as well as the firearm registration to come by snail mail. Once you have received both of those, you can then bring your firearm to the range.

Any idea how long the wait is after my pal application has been assigned to an officer ? Obviously its different for everyone but recent time lines would be appreciated. I've heard 3 things from them over the past week. Call back in a month from the 1 800 number and pressing 5, 9 months from generic email from cfo-on , and its been assigned to an officer call back in 2 months but expect 9 month delay from calling the 1800 ext 7503. In ontario.

Hello everyone I have my cfsc next week, I've been pretty nervous about it an passing but I'm sure I have nothing to worry about, is there any tips or anything that I should do to help like bring my own notes etc also how hard did you guys find the course to be?

I was nervous like you when I took it but honestly it wasn’t hard at all.
The one piece of advice I’ll give you is when they give you time to handle the guns take as much time as you can and ask the instructor any questions you might have.
Other than that I think the biggest obstacle I faced was my own nerves, so try to relax as much as you can.

I went to a local shooting range before going for my pal/RPAL, and the range officer gave me and my friends a quick tutorial. Basically explained ACTS and PROVE in 5 minutes and made sure we understood.
Before touching any firearm, ALWAYS assume it's loaded. Point firearm in safe direction always. Finger off the trigger. Eject the magazine and work the action to empty any chambered rounds.
Once it's time to shoot, load the firearm, while keeping it pointed in a safe direction. Finger off the trigger until it's time to definitely shoot.
Simple. Even a child could understand

Download the CFSC manual, quick read
ACTS, PROVE, read headstamps, read barrel stamps, and why are 20 ga shotgun shell the only yellow ones (and always yellow)
The course is easy, you will be fine. Don't rush.

Honestly it's super easy. My instructor told me the only time he failed someone was if they pointed a gun at someone or really didn't know anything. Just be confident and have fun!

The course and test weren't hard, but it was long. It was a 12 hour day start to finish, for the first PAL course. I was towards the end of the hands-on-testing though.
My advice is get plenty of sleep, don't eat too much at lunch, use protein/fat for snacks, and stay hydrated. Treat it like an all-nighter study session.

On the license application it asks if you've had behavioural/mental issues but doesn't ask you to specify. I'll be checking yes because I have been treated for GAD. Do they like contact you to follow up on what the issue is or what?

Yes, I believe that is correct. My understanding is that they may require confirmation from your healthcare provider that they see no reason why your condition should preclude you from owning a firearm, or that your condition is resolved. If I were you, I might attach a short letter from yourself to your application explaining why you ticked yes. I’m not sure what their procedures are (maybe they need something from your provider if you check that box regardless of the reason you ticked it), but it’s possible that you will avoid some delay by providing the information up front. If you really want to avoid delays on the processing side, you might consider getting your physician/therapist to provide you a letter to include along with your application. Good luck!

If it hasn't been sent to your CFO call; 1-800-731-4000, 1, 5, 2
If it has been sent to your CFO you will need the extension. It is different for every province. I know ON is 7503. To call the CFO go; 1-800-731-4000, 1, 1,(then enter extension for CFO)
Four month wait isn't irregular, in ON there is a 9 month backlog

Hi y’all, just wondering what kind of timelines you guys have been experiencing for PAL wait time. I sent mine off in mid March, but they didn’t open my application and get me in the system until late june. I got the payment done right after it showed up online (my credit card number had changed since I had sent it in so I had to call and do the payment manually). The payment went through on June 30th, but nothing has changed since, it still says the same old “we have completed the initial review” on the online portal.
I know it takes awhile, but I’m starting to get a bit worried as most people seem to say it goes quickly once the payment is processed but it looks like they haven’t even touched mine in 2 months… Starting to worry that they just automatically add a huge delay if you’re upfront about being treated by a family Dr. for mild depression in the past (figured I should be upfront so it doesn’t look like I’m trying to hide something), but now I’m worried my honesty might be working against me…

I bought 2 handguns about 2 weeks apart. Still waiting on the first one and was wondering if they will approve them together or will I have to wait longer for the next one.

If you want to buy restricted, just get the license number from the RCMP (you can ask for expiry too but if they don’t give or anything…then log into the license holder portal and there’s the expiry date under your info tab). Some sites need license proof, others don’t. Good luck!

On the RCMP services website my firearms license application says it was received on 2022-05-19. My current status says my application has been processed and issued and if I haven't received it in two weeks to contact them.
Is this two weeks from the date they received it? The last update to the page was 2022-05-24 as detailed at the bottom of the page. I tried all day to get through to the firearms program but couldn't get through to get some answers.

There's tons of restricted firearms that aren't handguns.
There's always a chance the freeze gets revoked in the future.
If you're already getting your PAL just spend the extra $100 and do both.

Lots of cool restricted options that aren't pistols, still absolutely worth taking and applying for restricted. Everybody always automatically defaults to pistols but there are other neat restricted firearms.
There is also always the opportunity with future governments to loosen pistol laws, don't want to be kicking yourself over not having a RPAL in the future.

Crossing the border with a stock
Hi. I'm going to get a wood stock for a rifle in the USA in a few days and I'm planing for the worst to happen. The seller doesn't ship to Canada so I'll go get it and come back home. From what I read on the RMCP website, it's perfectly legal to do so, but still, with the gun violence in Montreal, I'm kinda scared that the border crossing officer will freak out and it'll be an hassle when I declare what I bought. Anyone had similar experiences in the past to share maybe ? Again, thanks a lot.

The course is ridiculously easy to not only pass but get 100%. You don't need to feel intimidated or do preparation for it.

I recommend reading the manual before you take the course if you want to feel prepared.
It’s not really needed since everything will be thoroughly covered during the course but I enjoyed reviewing it on my own time before and it relieved some of the worry for me.

As others have said, all instructors follow the same book/slideshow and it is very thorough for the tests you take. You'll be fine as long as you pay attention and listen. ACTS, PROOVE, cartridge/headstamps, actions, and a little bit of definition work are the main things.
If your a go getter you could read through the books before hand as some others have posted the links too, but again the course is very thorough. Almost every page of the handbook is gone through word for word basically.

Just got my RPAL and FOMO is hitting me hard. I placed an order a few days ago for a MP9 2.0 and now I’m tempted to buy a P320 as they are modular and optic ready (more importantly in stock).
Since I’m still waiting on the first transfer and first restricted paperwork/new card, would there be issues if I was to buy a second handgun already?

Nah your good, as long as you have your pal you can buy as much as you want regardless of when you got it. If not in Ontario just make sure you have a membership to a range, if in Ontario it doesn't matter then.
Just be prepared for the loooooooooong ass wait times for transfers currently. I have 4 in the pipes currently going on 4 weeks for the oldest one.
Edit: also forgot to mention, be ready for the transfer to take an extra while being your first restricted also. Your first restricted transfer usually takes a bit longer than anything after thay, but ymmv, maybe it's better than when I first got my rpal/restricted.

you can import up to 5,000 rounds into Canada without a permit.
as a Canadian citizen, you cannot export ammunition from the US.
so the issue is not actually getting ammo into Canada, it's getting it out of the US.

This is probably a dumb question, but I’ll ask anyway. We’re allowed to be dumb every now and then right. Lol. Do most people just keep their Firearm Licence in their wallets along with the licence conditions print? Or do you just leave it with your firearms so it’s all together when you need it? Carrying it with me everyday just feels excessive and unnecessary when I have no need for it (ie not doing gun-related activities). Thoughts?

Smart to keep it + conditions paper just with your firearms. As you had said you'll never really need it outside of use of your firearms and my thought is always in the unlikely event of losing your wallet it'd be a significant added stress to report.
