First time restricted owner (to be). I bought a firearm through a local gun store, and it's waiting there for transfer approval. How will I know when I can pick up my firearm? Will I get a letter in the mail, or will the store cal me?

I just bought one this weekend as well. From what they guy at the store told me, both you and the store will get an email, and then you’ll be able to pick it up. Several days later, you’ll receive a new PAL in the mail that will include special conditions allowing you to travel to and from shooting clubs with it. Anyone with actual experience, please jump in if I’m wrong about any of this.

That is correct, both the buyer and seller will receive a transfer notification by email. Some sellers have signalled on forums that they sometimes do not receive the notification so I would suggest you forward them a copy once you receive it. The transfer notification allows you to go pick up your firearm and bring it home. At that point you will need to wait for your updated RPAL (with transport conditions) as well as the firearm registration to come by snail mail. Once you have received both of those, you can then bring your firearm to the range.

You can circumnavigate this wait for an adjusted RPAL by applying for a Long Term ATT to be added to your license ahead of any restricted purchase. You must provide proof of a gunclub membership to the CFO if you want to do this. They will mail you out an updated RPAL and a piece of paper that states the travel conditions. Take photocopies of this document and have one in your vehicles glove compartment whenever you intend to travel with your restricted firearm and you're all set.
