Here's another article blaming the increase of gun crime on mostly smuggled guns. Not that it will do anything to change the LPC's mind about banning everything.
Handguns a ‘hot commodity’ in Winnipeg as gun crimes increase

“(Recently) it’s been handguns — stolen handguns,” he said.
Still brings up this one up. I recall an ATIP request when a Calgary cop said something similar and they had no data in their systems to back it up.
18
u/doubleapplewcoconut May 26 '22
Yeah what the fuck? How do we not have good national data on this isn’t that the WHOLE POINT of maintaining the restricted registry?
If my S&W shows up in a crime do they not run the serial #? Either I’ve been robbed in which case it’s already reported, or I’m a criminal orchestrating straw purchases and an 8 year old could build an excel sheet against the handgun registry that figured in about two - three “scratched serial #” guns used in crime who in Canada “owns” could possibly own that set of restricteds and pay me a visit?

"Providing funding to provinces and territories who move ahead with banning handguns in their municipalities"
Welp. NL pistol shooters are fucked. Furey is already an LPC puppet, the province is starved for cash, and 'The Big Reset' is a-calling.
I assume this announcement on Monday will let us know whether or not theyre going to start SWATing us over our 'assault style rifles', as well.
I really feel like a chump for signing up and getting maimed for this country.

u/AlmostUnpleasant69 May 28 '22
Every province is fucked long term. All it will take is one liberal provincial government which is a given, and you can kiss em goodbye.

Well when you have all of these things drafted up previously it’s easy. I’m sure he has a whole drawer of proposed OIC legislation with titles on it like “use in case of mass shooting in states” “use in case of shooting here in Canadahhh” “use in case of water drink box uhh things”

So just to throw my experience out there, I bought a rifle today from a major retailer, and the license verification system completely bugged out and told the salesman that my PAL didn't match any on file. They had to call the CFP and manually verify my license, so the whole transaction took like three times longer than it should have.
Also, now that the PAL legally needs to be verified with every transfer, retail and private, what even is the point of having the plastic cards anymore? Why can't the CFP just look you up with your name and a PIN or something? If the card itself is never enough, I don't know why we need to have them anymore.

Well, it's less than 2 weeks away from the CCFR's "National Range Day" and I haven't seen a single newspaper, radio or TV ad about it. I checked the gun range's websites in Winnipeg and I can't see one that even mentions it. Only one gun range about an hour away has an event planned.
I had high hopes for this because the more people that interested in buying a gun, the better for us because the only thing politicians understand are votes.
Is there any mention of the event in any other areas?
10
u/Spider-King-270 May 23 '22
There was an MP doing a speech about it in parliament. I found my local event here

this is going to be a failure imo, i too had the same high hopes but i think the message got lost by only being broadcasted within the firearm community echo chamber.
no mention of it in mainstream media or even advertised in the cities nearby. I don't see how we can help turn the tide of public opinion to our side if we don't have those that are uneducated/unsure but interested giving a chance to join/experience it. especially when they hear it will take almost a year to get a license, they will lose interest. but i believe if they had a chance to actually experience it and get the itch/bite they would see it as a worthwhile thing to explore.

So in light of the Liberal "renewed" gun law promises, I'm very out of the loop on gun lobby groups that would be able to fight any legislation being tabled.
Are there any lobby groups the community here can suggest that is active and have been making progress (stopping légalisation in going through)/stirring the pot in the house of commons and senate?
And perhaps not just lobby groups, any petition currently on going that is looking for signatures, etc...?
I feel embarrassed I'm not more up to date on this or more knowledgeable, but seeking and researching more on this now...
Would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions!

CSAAA (More of a business/industry organization. Public membership isn't allowed, but should follow for some news)
CCFR - has a legal challenge against May 2020 OIC
CSSA - has a legal challenge against May 2020 OIC
NFA
Also BCWF in BC, or other similar organizations.
There is a current HoC petition right now that is against the recent C-71 changes.
Another worthy mention is the ATRS MS lawsuit.

Don't get your hopes up about any legislation being stopped. It will have 100% support from the LPC and Bloc and that's enough. I wouldn't be surprised if the Senate took their time and maybe changed a couple things, but thats it.
There is only one miracle scenario, and that's parliament issuing a vote of no confidence before the bill passes.

My biggest fear is reading "All semi autos will be banned"
Lol, oh my god you dickhead, I thought you were quoting the article.
The coming legislation does have the same title as a previously failed bill from the last Parliament, which died on the order paper after Trudeau called the 2021 election.
So that pretty much confirms it to be a re-issue of C-21.
What I can say is that we've heard from survivors of gun violence, we've seen a spate of gun violence… On the other hand, we also know that we have we have legitimate sport shooters, for example… There is hunting, and we don't want to do anything that that trenches upon those legitimate interests as well,"
I don't know what "trenching" on legitimate issues means, but I'm pretty sure confiscating people's guns counts as infringing on them.

With just a few weeks left in the House of Commons' spring sitting before MPs take a summer hiatus from debating and passing legislation, and other priority bills already moving through Parliament, should a new gun-control bill be presented in as Trudeau has said "the coming weeks," it's unlikely it would pass before the fall. Between factoring in the time opposition parties would want to study any proposed new legislation, and the time that may be needed to implement any regulations stemming from potential new laws, it could be some time before further updates to Canada's firearm laws are in effect.
Read this in a CTV article so it might end up just being a “hey look at us doing something, vote for us next time”

Are you worried about Monday? Do you think we need to crack down on criminals rather than law abiding firearms owners?
Well, this is a friendly reminder that this past week, the Supreme Court of Canada considered the case of the Quebec mosque mass shooter and ruled that a life sentence without a reasonable possibility of parole is unconstitutional:
Summary: "A life sentence without a realistic possibility of parole presupposes the offender is beyond redemption and cannot be rehabilitated. This is degrading in nature and incompatible with human dignity. It amounts to cruel and unusual punishment. “By depriving offenders in advance of any possibility of reintegration into society, section 745.51 shakes the very foundations of Canadian criminal law”, the Chief Justice said."
https://www.scc-csc.ca/case-dossier/cb/2022/39544-eng.aspx
Those poor mass shooters. We can't upset their sense of dignity. But you, please hand in your property because you're too dangerous. Thank you, and happy Monday.

u/throwa37 May 28 '22 edited May 28 '22
We're going to see soon. We've been speculating on what exactly they mean by that since the election campaign; do they literally mean all magazines, period? Or is this a really simplistic and broad way to say that they want to close the "pistol mag loophole" for semi-auto rifles? It's not like they'd get into technical detail about the laws in their campaign platform, which is where this is taken from.
I'm hoping that the status quo of unlimited mags for manual actions and rimfires remains in place, but I'm very unsure of what to expect.
EDIT: Tell ya one thing though, if it does end up being a total, blanket magazine restriction, I'm not going to pin (or weld or whateverthefuck) my 590A1; I'm gonna sell that bitch and trade up to a Beretta 1301. If I'm stuck at five round, it's going to be the most badass five rounds I can get.

u/OntarioLad May 24 '22
What do you guys make of PP's pledge to "do a rewrite of the FA"?
18
u/yummybunnybear May 24 '22
A re-write of the FA doesn't mean things will be better for firearms owners. There are many things that don't make sense in the FA, but sometimes the idiosyncrasies work in our favour and we get to own Tavors and SBRs and other things that are banned by feature in even some states. A re-write of the FA would presumably make the rules more logical, but logically restricting certain types of firearms is a restriction nonetheless.
16
u/drain-angel BC May 24 '22
Previous proposals of a FA rewrite is to base NR/R/P on OAL only, I believe the proposal by CSSA in the Harper era was 660mm, which would put almost all Bullpups in the market with a 16" barrel+ into NR.
Of course everyone will have different opinions on what a rewrite/SCS would mean, but that's just giving a general idea and I'd assume CSSA/CCFR would be consulted onto this.
8
u/Batsinvic888 Bats888 on YouTube May 24 '22
I do think a rewrite is needed, but there is truth to what you say. For example, I can see them removing the ability to ban firearms by name. If that were to happen I can see a future LPC government banning all semi-auto autos because they can't ban by name.
4
u/Q-Ball7 In the end, it's taxes all the way down May 25 '22
If that were to happen I can see a future LPC government banning all semi-auto because they can't ban by name.
They can just write the ability back in. It isn't actually that difficult to change the law once you're in power, and because we have no property rights there's no other protection against that.
19
u/drain-angel BC May 24 '22
I think it's the best we can do right now. End of the day, there really is no pragmatic alternative.
18
u/throwa37 May 24 '22
I'll believe it when I see it. Not that I don't appreciate his stance, but politicians always over-promise. Harper pledged to do the same thing.
5
u/drain-angel BC May 24 '22
To be fair, I recall someone here saying that CSSA or some industry group/insider said we were really close to getting there (and suppressors) but it was too late since the calls for FA rewrite came after the CZ 858/Swiss Arms debacle, which was around late 2014 I think?
I still have a nagging feeling that Poilievre, given how much he kisses Quebec's ass, is probably going to be slow or half-deliver on this but the alternative in Charest (who explicitly said they're doing nothing), Patrick Brown (who is even less trustworthy), and Lewis (who I actually respect a lot for even taking her CFSC, but isn't PM material yet). Or the Libs :P

Let's face it--we're fucked. The reason things probably won't change much in the US is not only 2A, but the fact there are so many gun owners in the US, and especially their recognition that a firearm is a viable form of self defense.
It's often cited that there are 2.2 million gun owners in Canada, but I don't trust that number as a lot of them are Fudds who couldn't care less if they banned "scary rifles" or handguns because they mistakenly think they won't come after their guns. I know several myself. There's only about 650,000 RPAL holders who really have something to lose and that's just not enough to make a difference.
We might get a reprieve for 4 years if PP wins the next election, but sooner or later, we're going to end up the way of Australia, NZ, etc and a lot of the blame is on us because we love to preach to the choir rather than getting more people owning guns.
Someone posted in this sub a while ago that gun ranges in Ontario tend to be snobbish and elite and restrict membership. I know here in Winnipeg, gun ranges are almost a secret, I also had high hopes for the CCFR National Range Day on June 4th, but that looks like a total bust as I haven't seen one single ad anywhere and only one gun club in rural Manitoba participating.

How are we realistically going to get others into owning guns when a good chunk of this country is Reddit personified? They won't touch a gun because they're going to get PTSD.

It's probably even less than that, looking back at the number of signatures petitions such as e-2574 got. The numbers are just too low.

I tried to convince myself for a couple months after the OIC that it was reversible but that has long gone in me.
I keep saying it, but it bears repeating. In the next 25 years Canada will have worse gun laws than both Australia and the UK because the LPC will take the worst of both, none of the silver lining, and combine them with our own nonsense.

CBC just aired this on national TV. They did interview Rod Giltaca for once, but they actually said AR's "can include a feature to prevent jams" referring to the charging handle or the forward assist... holy fuck I just lost brain cells.
Edit: This also wasn't just an aside, it was them trying to demonize the AR. Basically insinuating that it's only there so you can clear jams to keep shooting people.
22
u/RadiantWings May 26 '22
Just watched it as well. I especially liked when they brought up Call of Duty... as if that had some sort of relevance to the issue in question. That video has to be among the most idiotic, pointless videos I've ever seen. All it was trying to do was REALLY insinuate that the AR-15 is some sort of human killing death machine.

I love how the utility of the forward assist is so hotly debated that it’s become a meme, then the firearms experts at CBC come in and say it’s a magic button that will fix a double feed instantly like magic. Then they’ll bitch non stop about how fake news is subverting democracy or something.

Who's going to tell these Liberals that carrying a firearm within 1000 feet of a school is a felony in all 50 states.
Unfortunately the shooter didn't give a fuck about the law and did it anyway.
And have y'all noticed that these shooters are attacking schools, supermarkets and other places where no one has a gun? It's almost as if gun free zones are the easiest targets.
Thank God for that border patrol agent who happened to be near the school and took the shooter down.

u/floydsmoot May 25 '22
You can carry within a 1000 ft of a school with a CCW permit in AZ as I understand it. Although AZ is a constitutional carry state, you can't carry near a school as previously stated and a few other places like National Parks, and restaurants serving alcohol without one.

I often heard PPC voters say things like "I'm going to vote for what I want rather than the lesser of two evils" or "We're never getting change if we keep voting for the status quo". These people don't know how our political system works. The general election is not the time or place to be voting for what you agree with 100%. Voting for policy change happens at the party convention stage. You can try to influence the policies of the major parties during the party conventions, but after the major (edit) parties vote on their official policies, those major parties and their official policies are your only realistic options in a general election. Creating a new splinter party will only hurt your side of the political spectrum. Think of it this way: If the right leaning CPC didn't even adopt your favored policies, what chance in hell would your new fringe party have in getting your policies voted in by the rest of Canada that is far more left leaning than even the CPC? If you don't like the direction the CPC is going, then change it at the convention stage. But once it's general election time and you don't see a party that you agree with 100%, it's not the time to play a vain offensive play. Your only option is to play defensively and vote for the party that will make you lose the least yards. That party was the CPC in the last election. Even if the Toole didn't revoke the OIC, we still would have been better off than what's going to come on Monday.

This is how I feel about voting:
The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.

Not knowing much about 3D printing, would this gun just confiscated in Winnipeg be totally printed or need to buy parts from the US? How about the barrel?

u/WhoaUhThray May 25 '22
There are guns that can be 'totally printed' and just need metal functioning parts, but those kinds of guns have always existed. Nine times out of ten when the media talks about 3D printed guns in Canada it's just the polymer bits still requiring, y'know, the actual gun, or a replica of something.

Gotta love how cp24 is headlining this police shooting and how it’s outside elementary school. As they zoom in 50x to see the actual scene down the street from the school. They’re not wrong by wording it this way, but they’re also using what happened in Texas as some more context. When we are usually used to seeing “(Xyz) shot in (location)” and nothing more
Edit:Lmao they did it “shot just a few dozen feet from this school” proceeds to zoom in with a high power lens
Edit 2: one of the witnesses said the gunman had a “machine gun looking thing”. Wow I guess that dude found a way to import one from the 1970s!

Why is the discussion around electoralism in firearm politics always revolves on the idea that the CPC should alienate a chunk of their base to satiate non-committal voters on topics that they already objectively are identical to the other parties (but apparently not enough somehow), especially regarding social issues?
Why isn't it the other way around? Why can't the discussion be on getting the Libs/NDP to stop being at our throats? For all these "liberal" gun owners who think they're such a massive influential voting bloc here, why hasn't any progress been made on that front? Especially given that it wasn't too long ago that the NDP had an empowered rural caucus and allowed dissent, such as the LGR vote.
Also credit where credits due, the GPC is about to enact pro-firearm policies but we don't see people running around every other week saying that the GPC needs to alienate their environmentalist base to woo voters for firearm policy.

I think this time around, the government will take the "national cap and grandfather" approach. My reasons:
- When it comes to handguns, antigunners are calling for a cap and grandfather approach. The government will take this as tacit approval from the antigunners to go this route. It's a cost-effective and administratively easy approach.
- Nobody was happy with the municipal/regional handgun ban. I think the government will scrap that idea altogether.
- The government needed the 2020 OIC to make a splash and set themselves up as the "serious anti-gun party" and it worked for one election cycle. But that approach of "buying-back" guns is coming with a multi-billion price tag. I don't think they're going to do more along that approach in this current fiscal environment. They're going to allow grandfathering instead.
- I think handguns and pinned large cap magazines will come under this "national cap and grandfather" approach. As for semiauto rifles, I'm not sure if they will do anything more. I give it 50/50. They have enough credit from the 2020 OIC to say they "already banned the AR-15 used in USA shootings" and the general public doesn't know much about what's still left in the semiauto market. The current government does things for public image, so they might not see the value in going after more rifles. Handguns, on the other hand, continue to worry urban voters.

I was just wondering if there are any updates on the CCFR's legal battle against the new(ish) gun control regulations

Honestly the way this government does things even if the CCFR wins the lawsuit they will find a way to re-ban it all. Hopefully I’m wrong

I find it amusing how so many in this community are duped by these promises to replace the Firearms Act. Replace with what? Another law that prohibits the same guns? It's an empty promise and a smoke screen against the real issue. There's nothing stopping Brown from working with experts and lawful firearms owners to repeal the OIC under the existing framework of the Firearms Act. For him to make the repeal of the Firearms Act a precondition to working with lawful firearms owners is a red flag more than a good promise. He's basically making an excuse for inaction by introducing a more complex precondition rather than just saying simply "I will consult lawful firearms owners to review the OIC".
