So what do we think these new measures are going to be ? My fear is an all out ban on semi autos

It’s simple, we kill the Batman. But no to be honest we can’t do anything Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver voters sealed our fate long ago

  1. Handgun Ban (Regional, national or both)
  2. Magazine ban (no more 5/30's etc)
  3. Complete Semi Auto Ban
  4. All of the above?

National handgun ban

No, he's still acknowledging that there is no unity on a handgun ban nation-wide, and that they're going to act "where there is unity". So that looks like it's off the table.

Magazine ban (no more 5/30's etc)

Possible. It's going to involve magazines in some way.

Complete Semi Auto Ban

Not a chance. You can't just drop a ban of potentially millions of guns with no prep. Look how much trouble the OIC is giving them. A total semi-auto ban (on short notice) is completely unrealistic.

I admire your optimism, but there is little to nothing stopping the LPC from doing the same thing they did in 2020 to the rest of the semi-autos. Look at the buyback, 2 full years after the OIC and it's kicked down the road, waiting to be exploited for the urban vote and you're dreaming if you think it couldn't happen again.

Now I'm not saying it will be this announcement but remember, Trudeau has 3 more years with the agreement that was made with the NDP and neither party cares about gun owners or firearm ownership.

Not if they grandfather them, no. But if this was their plan, I strongly suspect we'd have heard something about it by now. A full semi-auto ban is the kind of thing that leaks before it's announced. The Libs can't even keep a lid on their own internal fighting about handguns.

You might be right, but the Liberals could also keep something like that in their back pocket in the event of an election before 2025. There's a couple candidates in the Conservative leadership race who have railed against the OIC and further legislation that Trudeau is planning.

Remember, according to polls the topic of guns didn't even register in the top 10 of issues voters were worried about in the last election, but that doesn't stop Poly and left-wing voters from pushing the narrative that the 2020 OIC and further promised legislation delivered the win in the past 2 elections.

The thing is I don't believe any of these changes will be off the cuff. These plans have likely already been written long ago, with preparations being made ever since the OIC to further implement restrictions on legal gun owners.

We know the LPC wants all semi's gone because that's what poly wants. We know they want all handguns gone because that's the lowest hanging fruit that all of their uninformed urban voters can latch onto, believing it will have an impact on gangbanger shootings.

You kidding? Looks at the OIC list; that shit was compiled over a weekend and didn't include a ton of firearms models that have been in the country for decades.

They have no idea what they're doing, or the one person who did retired and no one can find their files.

I think that was about cost management, not a lack of prep time. There were news articles months before the OIC where Blair let slip that they were taking that approach.

Even just the "mass shooter greatest hits" compilation they came out with is going to cost them damn near a billion to deal with.

I don't think so. If they had these plans for any length of time, they'd be milking them for votes. It doesn't benefit them to keep them secret.

I think this time around, the government will take the "national cap and grandfather" approach. My reasons:

- When it comes to handguns, antigunners are calling for a cap and grandfather approach. The government will take this as tacit approval from the antigunners to go this route. It's a cost-effective and administratively easy approach.

- Nobody was happy with the municipal/regional handgun ban. I think the government will scrap that idea altogether.

- The government needed the 2020 OIC to make a splash and set themselves up as the "serious anti-gun party" and it worked for one election cycle. But that approach of "buying-back" guns is coming with a multi-billion price tag. I don't think they're going to do more along that approach in this current fiscal environment. They're going to allow grandfathering instead.

- I think handguns and pinned large cap magazines will come under this "national cap and grandfather" approach. As for semiauto rifles, I'm not sure if they will do anything more. I give it 50/50. They have enough credit from the 2020 OIC to say they "already banned the AR-15 used in USA shootings" and the general public doesn't know much about what's still left in the semiauto market. The current government does things for public image, so they might not see the value in going after more rifles. Handguns, on the other hand, continue to worry urban voters.

The c-21 revival that we already knew about. Red flag laws, new magazine regs, funding for provincial bans, and logistics related to the OIC buyback.

My fear is an all out ban on semi autos

No way. That would require way more leadup and prep work.

I think in terms of handguns, a R cap will be instated. I'm 50/50 on a municipal ban since the coverage would be miniscule and the antis really don't like it. Something maybe like 2-3 Rs a year or a hard limit.

Magazines - retroactive sale/transfer of magazines that can hold more than "legally limited" (ex. 30rds pinned to 5) will become illegal. I think cofniscation would be too much of a task in this case. But from hereon mags would have to be blocked completely to 5/10, not 5/30 or 10/30.

PALs will be required for gun parts, accessories, and magazines.

"80%s" will be considered firearms.

This is what has been shown in the SECU report so it's likely this will be the case.

7

u/[deleted] May 26 '22

Weren't 80% already considered firearms

I believe it was in a grey area and the RCMP came out with their own opinion on it that effectively made them prohibited, was moot anyways. But this is more about Glocks I assume, specific wording was "reciever blanks".

Was there something said or written formally, that mentions potential new regulations? Or is this just speculation?

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

The spectreballistics user just linked to the bill supposedly coming Monday. No details yet about what it'll actually entail, but people are thinking mag bans

I doubt it is anything too crazy because parliament adjourns on June 23. That gives it less than four weeks to pass. I have a feeling this is designed to die on the table to gauge support for it.

Really hoping you're correct on that one man. This country is just depressing
