To my fellow Albertans, I finally cracked the code on getting past the system hanging up on us.

When it asks for if you know the extension you want to reach, punch in 9026 for the Alberta CFO. I got through instantly that way after two weeks of getting hung up on on the main line.

Finally was able to get confirmation that my new licence card was mailed last week.

Applied online for first time PAL on December 17, 2022.

Application processed and license issued February 7, 2023

I was never able to log in to individual web services so I was calling in about every two weeks. I called the ON CFO about two weeks ago (and waited on hold for almost 2 hours) and she said she put some kind of a note on my file. Not sure if that made a difference at all.

I had also emailed the ON CFO some time before that but they never replied until I got an email today saying it was approved.

Now to wait for my card to get printed and mailed.

That you will need to clear up, you will need to login occasionally for transactions and renewals. They may have mis-keyed your email address or birthplace.

I thought I would share my PAL/RPAL timelines thus far, this forum has been very helpful to me as a beginner.

Ontario

November 27th 2022: PAL/RPAL course complete.

January 11th 2023: Course paperwork received.

January 12th 2023: Applied Online. CC charged and references emailed immediately.

January 13th 2023: References completed, status changed to "Application Submitted Successfully".

January 23rd 2023: I checked and the status changed to "Initial Review Complete..." (Could have been sooner, just discovered the IWS page. Started checking 100 times a day after that lol).

February 9th 2023: Called RCMP as this was day 28 from my counting. When I gave my application number, the agent said "Oh, you are on the new system". They then said that my application was "Pre-Approved", gave me my license number and expiry date and said they were just waiting for my 28 day period to be over starting January 19th. They also said it would take 4 weeks after that to receive my card.

February10th: Woke up today to "Your application has been processed and your license has been issued."

I will update this when my card arrives.

• Received by RCMP June 17, 2022
• CC charge September 2, 2022
• License issued November 23, 2022
• January 27th, 2023 called CFP as I hadn't received my PAL, found out that due to a data entry mistake by CFP, confirmed by CFP as their mistake, license request to be reprinted was submitted due to missing apartment number
• February 10, 2023, called CFP - license still not reprinted, was told no priority can be assigned, "should be printed within 3-4 weeks"
• Time since CC charge: 6 months

No one seems to know. RCMP says average of 4-6months (website says 4), CFO says 9 months. I have a buddy who received his within 2 months. At this point is completely random unless you have errors or a complex application.

Printing/mailing timeline is variable. Mine was approved mid-December (16th or something), called the 16th of Jan and was told it was printed, and it didn’t arrive until Feb 6th. So that means mine was printed for three weeks or so before it hit the mail. Also AB.

Looks like everyone should expect up around 7-8 weeks for it to come after approval.

I bought a scope for my 10/22. I am using the scope rail that came with the gun. The scope came with 3/8” rings.

The guy at the gun store told me it would mount, but it doesn’t look secure when I mount it.

As you can see, there is a gap between the scope and the scope base. Is this normal?

Edit: Ended up buying $18 weaver rings on Amazon. The scope itself was only $30 so hopefully these fit good.

Last May, my girl applied for her RPAL and it came in the mail today. Already bought her a Beretta 92FS for her first gun, got it before the ban so unfortunately I can't transfer it to her. Now she is looking for her forever rifle. Hoping the BCL SRV2 Siberian turns out well because it's the lightest one out there that isn't a WK180c Gen 2 and I don't want to buy her one of those.

im trying to apply for my rpal online and im not sure if using someone living in the states as one of my references would slow down the process? (my cousin that im really close to moved to the states last year, i also have my friend here in canada as an alternative but id rather have my cousin be my reference since hes more reliable) would the reference’s location make a difference? also do they only email the references?

lastly itd also be great to know how long it took u guys to get your pal from an online app.

It might. References aren't always contacted and on the off chance they are, time zone and geographic differences might make licensing slower.

Yes, to both. You need to ask for an ATT because it isn't a usual destination.

I haven't done it in a while but I think you can do an online ATT request and address change at the same. Otherwise call in asking for an address change and ATT.

When submitting my PAL, do the signatures have to be in pen? I just moved and don’t have anyone around who has known me for 3 years. Will have I have to mail my application to them for them to sign, and then wait to mail it back? Or can they fill it out, scan it, email it to me, and then I print it and submit my application?

I did my CFSC FINALLY! I have a few questions before I send in my application. Is the printable application form accepted? (Messed up the one I got from the course) I also ticked a couple no boxes on questions that didn’t apply to me ex: “did you pass the CRFSC” (I passed course/applied for non restricted). Also I left the conjugal partner personal info section completely blank as I haven’t had one in over 2 years. I attached a loose piece of paper clarifying why I took those actions incase it is an issue. Do you all think my application would go through fine? Would hate to add extra months onto the process if I can avoid it. Thanks and look forward to hearing what you guys have to say!

Don't imagine there'll be any issues if you attached an explanation, but it's generally better to add "N/A" so that there's no chance anyone thinks it was missed/skipped.

Also, the OinK of 2020 was a nullification which doesn't exist in the law. Treat it like a restricted stuck in your safe until court clarification. Get an ATT.

Got my firearm license in the mail today… where can I go shoot without a gun/membership in Ottawa?

Hi everyone. Like the title says, I just got my license and I’d like to go to a range in Ottawa for some target practice. Are there any spots in or near Ottawa where I can drop in? I will eventually get a membership when I settle on a spot, but would just like to celebrate/have fun in the mean time.

If there’s a sub or thread about ranges, specifically for Ottawa please let me know.

Stitsville used to offer a package where they provided gun (s) and ammo. They suspended it during COVID, you could check to see if it's back now. It's geared for people without PALs, having your PAL doesn't hurt of help that.

They also allow non-members on weekends (rifle and shotgun, don't allow non member handgun) if you have your own gun.

This is the way. Literally the only way, in Ottawa itself. Terrible here... To my knowledge, the city has never had a commercial indoor pistol range, even in the good ol' days.

@OP, when you're ready to get a membership somewhere, check out the RA Centre. It will be one of the only places around you'll ever be able to shoot handguns, at least until the club guns wear out and can't be replaced.

By-laws are what matters. In my area one by-law says you can hunt and discharge firearms if you have all the necessary licenses and are in designated areas. At the same time the noise by-law says you can’t discharge a firearm unless you are in fact hunting.

I applied for my PAL last year and today, I received a missing information letter, along with a copy of my application. They want me to clarify section C 16.d.

I selected Yes because I am taking anti depressants as a result of a depression diagnosis. But I have never attempted nor threatened suicide.

Would requesting my doctor to provide a letter for confirming this diagnosis suffice and address the request to clarify said section? If others have been in this situation, how did you clarify it?

I was same situation as I selected yes in c16d for mental issue history and got my RPAL a month ago.

I attached a paper explaining everything honestly and state I am no harm to community. Did NOT get doctor notes just plain explanation. But I am a little different as I stopped the treatment at time sending application.

If you currently still taking medication then safer to either call cfo to seek advice, or get doctor note and send to them. Which province are you? If call them Make sure select specific extension that reaches cfo directly. Extension number is different based on province

Gun owner from Quebec here. I just bought an SKS and a used shotgun from gun stores, not individuals. I can't seem to find the registration number (NUAF). Is it a seperate marking or is it the firearm's serial number?

Also, is the identification number (NIAF) supposed to be marked somewhere on the firearm or is it only an online thing?

You need to make an account on the RCMP website (I use my GCKey, but I believe you can use a bank login as well) and then you should see the updates on there once the letter is received by them.

I also mailed mine in and got to see the notifications online.

No one ever says how to do it online for a first time applicant, to the point where I honestly believe there is no way to do it online your very first time applying after completing the CFSC.

I think people believe you can do it online because that's how you can renew your license and they then think you can do the same as a first time applicant. I may be wrong and you really can do it online but I've literally only seen people say "do it online" without explaining where or how to do it. Because everything about the CFP is convoluted and confusing I haven't found anywhere on any government site that lets you do it online, probably because you have to put signatures and personal information on it and then you'd have to somehow scan it on to your computer and then how would you actually upload it/send it to them? Do they have a secure portal or something because you can't send anything through email. Again maybe I'm wrong but nobody seems to want to say where or how to do it so just printing the application and filling it out, getting references and guarantors to sign and mailing it seems to me to be the simplest way, like they've done for years and years.

You can definitely apply online for first timers. I did it in December. If you google apply online for firearms the first result is this which is where I applied. Approved after 30 days.

Random question because I'm too lazy to look: When restricted guns are in storage, do they need to be double-locked like during transport? Ie: are they supposed to have a trigger lock on them when in the safe?

Edit: I got my RPAL a decade ago and only had non-resreicted hunting rifles until very recently. Sorry the knowledge wasn't fresh.

Authorisation to Transport hasn't arrived yet. Can I still go to the range?

Eleven days ago I called the BC CFO office, a nice lady answered right away, told me she'd transfer the handgun "right now" and send me a new R-PAL that has Authorization to Transport built in somehow (I guess it's written on the new card?).

I got the gun a few days afterwards, but no new R-PAL with Authorization to Transfer.

Do I need to have the new card in hand to go to the range, or is it good enough to say "they told me they were sending it" if anything were to happen?

The Authorization to Transfer exists somewhere... I just don't have it.

ATT is automatically attached to your rPAL. This is why they print a new one with your first restricted purchase.

What you also need is the paper attached to your rPAL (hopefully this is removed with the redesign), and you need to carry the restricted registration slip.

These things need to be presented to law enforcement on demand, it's in the regulations.

You’re able to apply up to six months prior to expiry, I recommend you do so. I applied in June when my licence expired in August, and I’m still waiting for my card after my renewal was approved six weeks ago

So long as your shots are close (100 yards or so), a semi auto like a wk180 is fine for coyotes. If you expect longer shots, a bolt action will be more accurate.

I'm really torn between a Mossberg Maverick 88 and a Benelli Supernova. On one hand the supernova looks super slick, has much better reviews for ergonomics and performance, but it's also twice the price of the Maverick, which also has good reviews considering the price. This will be my first purchase.

I can afford the supernova, but I almost feel guilty spending that much.

Have the dates of expected transfers for restricted guns been bumped up suddenly? My Sept/Oct purchases were trending to transfer in late April but when I checked the spreadsheet it showed early March now. Any insight into what's going on?

The spreadsheet is based on constantly changing data, averages that consider how many transfers were likely completed each day. The dates change constantly. I've noticed the past week or so they've processed 400-500 per day instead of the 200-300 they were moving through just after the new year started.

Good morning! Ok so I've got all the errors and missing information all done and signed and sealed in the return envelope provided by the RCMP. One thing I was just curious about though, is RCMP return mail free? As in like no need for stamps or is it just like regular mail in which you do need to add a stamp?

I was curious because my dad was saying there are some government mailing things that are free but we couldn't see anything about the RCMP. I found it interesting cause I actually didn't know it was free to send mail to like your MP and stuff like that.

But Canada Post handled the rifle no issue.

Quick one regarding my application. I’m in Ontario by the way!

My PAL application was received Dec 05 2022, and charged shortly after. It has said that my application was processed and my license issued for about 3-4 weeks now. I called the RCMP since the note mentions to call if you don’t receive the card in two weeks, and the person on the phone told me they haven’t printed it yet.

Felt like I got lucky and was in the home stretch, but now I’m wondering how long printing can take.

Has anyone else have to wait a long time for their card even though the site says it was already issued?

Not in all provinces. Some provinces require the results to be taken away and verified or some shit and then mailed to you. It's not like Alberta where you leave the course with your paperwork.

It can add like a month into the process.

Average is 3 - 6 months with some potential delay now because their card printer is supposedly broken.

People waiting a year and a half are outliers and likely had something flagged on their application like past history of mental illness.
