Looking for places to shoot
Just looking for good places to shoot in the lower mainland of BC. I usually head out towards Coquitlam mountain but some other options would be great. Still new to the gun owners community so any tips would be great!

Assuming you had the money, how practical/impractical is the idea of buying some hunting acreage out in the bush to shoot NR's on it without the hassle that comes with finding and shooting on Crown Land? My guess is that the biggest issue would be in anti-gun bylaws attached to townships the land is on.

Biggest thing would be local bylaws that you would have to look out for, second would be a good backstop with decent range.
Usually they will post the bylaws online so you can start close to you and work your way out until you find one that is gun friendly, depending on where you live it might not be that far.

PAL/RPAL “notice” A friend and I did our courses in October 2021. We got our certified results back in early December, and I submitted before the end of 2021. I had my RPAL card at the end of March. My friend sat on hers for a couple of months, but submitted in February 2022. No card, nothing online. With me pushing her to look into it, multiple calls to the RCMP and Ontario CFO, she found out yesterday that she was approved in May 2022. The card has been sitting in a postal depot in Mississauga for 9 months. If nothing is showing online, they have taken your money and months later still nothing, call the CFO. You’re not being a pain in the ass, you are doing your due diligence and following up on your certification.

So my application status has just been updated :
>Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canadian Firearms Program Toll Free number (1-800-731-4000).
Does this mean I have my PAL now? I can order things online? How do I go about doing that? There is no additional information given other than my application number.

Called the CFP and they gave me my licence number and expiration date.
My understanding is the expiration date is your birth month and day, +5 years of current year (2028). At least that's what it was for me. I would recommend you also ask for the licence expiration date just to confirm.

You could call up and see if they will give you your license number. Some stores will take just your number but a lot, especially these days, prefer to see plastic. It is best to just wait for the card to show up but if you see something that you really like and it might be out of stock soon you can always ask the store. Worst thing they can say is no but they may take a deposit and hold it for you in the mean time. A buddy of mine did this with a vector 2 years back.

Correct. If CFP busy you could try your CFO line as well. Either of those would have access to your number now that your approved. You will need it to get yourself setup on the license holder side of the web services portal too.

I'm going to buy my first gun from cabelas tomorrow but I wanted to know if it was okay for an unlicensed friend of mine to come with me to pick it up. This may be a dumb question but is it looked down upon in the community?

If he comes up to the counter and has a lot of input on what you're buying and wants to hold it and all that you will be a text book example of what a straw purchase can look like. You might want to avoid that.

You’re good, they might not let him hold the gun, depending on the turd behind the counter. But nothing stopping you from bringing someone up to the counter.They shouldn’t ask for pal just for looking/holding but there are some weird people out there.

November 12 - CFSC
November 28 - Receive CFO Stamped Results
November 30 - Mail Application
December 05 - RCMP Receives Application
December 21 - Credit Card Charged
December 21 - Application appears online. Status "We have completed initial review"
January 06 - License Issued. Status "Your application has been processed and your license has been issued."
February 02 - License mailed (based on the date on the document)
February 10 - License received

Some online retailers will let you with just the PAL number. However, if you still didn’t have your card by the time you received your firearm, you wouldn’t legally be allowed to be in possession of it. I’d just play it safe and wait for your card.

Can you apply for initial PAL online now? My friend just got her CFO letter in the mail and I was gonna help her do the paperwork, but I saw something on the RCMP website about applying online. I know you can do renewals online, but is the initial PAL application available online now also?

Just hung up with the nice lady at the 1800 number re:RPAL application. Apparently new style of cards are being issued so this has created a backlog and I can expect to wait 6-8 weeks more for my card issued Feb 1 to arrive.

What do you want the gun for? Shooting targets for fun, hunting, personal defence/survival gun, etc? It's important to know, because guns are very specialized tools.
If you're asking what pump shotguns are good, I'd either buy a used Remington 870 made prior to 2007, or, more easily, a new Mossberg 500. You can't go wrong.

This is probably redundant but...Ontario rpal+pal application timeline, question 16 checked off:
- Courses completed September 24th-26th 2021
- results received November 8th 2021
- mailed with tracking November 15th 202.
- Received by the RCMP November 22nd 2021
- CC charged December 23rd 2021
- December 23rd 2021 realize that I forgot to mail the explanation with my application. Mailed that day after they replied to an email asking if there was another way to get it to them (email).
- January 5th 2022 received a letter saying I forgot to state my name/sign the back of my photo. Mailed back the next day.
- February 12 2022 (Saturday - wtf?) Received an email asking me to contact them - called the CFP number the following Monday it was asking me to send them the above to them. Apparently it was the CFO office that sent that since it takes about a month or so for stuff to get sent up.
- May 17th 2022 emailed them asking if there was an update since my references were wondering when they'd get contacted. Received a reply saying it was in the main queue for the CFO.
- February 11th 2023 I sent another email asking again since I was curious since I had since done several background checks with the federal government and the RCMP for unrelated matters with no issue.
- Approved February 17th 2023. Received a response to the email I sent saying so as well.
Sorry for formatting, on my lunch break, I'm also on my cell. Super long wait because of question 16 and I had to resend my photo in January of last year. Weird part is that my references weren't contacted.
Edit: well I'm back I didn't really add any more information since I had already gave the giest of it.
Ninja edit for anyone who gets brought here for whatever reason: ended up giving a bit more detail on the timeline. I also called two other times to get an update/get them to update my address. The last time I called I was told that all I can do is wait back in April of 2022.

I just got off the phone with the CFO office in BC. They told me that my ATT is automatically and electronically associated with my RPAL number. Even though a new RPAL (with the ATT indicated on the card) will be printed and mailed to me, I do not need to wait for this in order to transport to the range. She said I need my registration card and the RPAL I currently have until the new RPAL comes in the mail.
To the guy that responded "what did you get someone to take your PAL for you?!" when I asked if I could go to the range without ATT in hand; did you pay someone to take your PAL for you? Dickhead.

Looking for recommendations for a rifle In 308.
Reliability above precision but an accurate rifle would be good too. Just really like the idea of being able to use 308. Or put surplus 7.62x51 NATO through it. Seems versatile and readily available.

Question about getting a restricted. It has been asked here before, but I didn't save it.
Once you get the restricted, do I need to fill out any other form (transportation) or anything like that? What does the process look like? After it is approved, do they send out another document (to be kept with license)?

So in alberta at least the process goes like this: buy pew - wait for email confirming transfer approved and the letter that is the ATT from store to home only - wait for your registration papers in the mail - take new pew with your rpal, registration and paper sheet that came with rpal conditions to range.

If it's mailed to you, you just have to wait for it to show up at your place.
If you have to go and pick it up, just print out your transfer paper from CFO, and bring one lock and one trigger lock with you when you pick it up.
Also, PAL and that piece of paper with list of conditions.

Hi everyone,
In anticipation of my handguns being approved, I went ahead and purchased a Nanuk 925 pistol case. I know these are fine for transporting but are they legal to be used for storage long-term at home? The guns will have trigger locks on them and the case will have a lock on it as well. I'm in Ontario if that matters.
Also is it legal to store loaded magazine in the case along with the gun? The gun itself is unloaded of course.
This is the case that I bought.

As has been discussed here in previous weeks, that 'should' be legal ( I won't say 'is' as I am not your lawyer). But, since you'll not be able to replace any handguns if they get stolen, maybe consider a container that is less easy to just pick up and carry out of your house. Just my 2 cents.

Someone else start a seperate thread about this.
As long it's a hard case that's lockable, and the pistol inside is trigger locked, then it's fine.
Only thing you have to watch out for is the foam keep moisture in, so you should put something in it to prevent moisture build up.

Just an update for everyone waiting for their PAL!
- Application received December 15 2022
- License was issued around Jan 15 or maybe a bit earlier.
- Card received in mail yesterday (Feb 13)
Today I went out and bought myself a Tikka T1x 16” in .22lr that was traded in yesterday at my local shop. Was originally going to go CZ457, but at $630 the tikka felt right given I’m trying to not blow all my cash at once, especially considering it already came with a rail mounted! Not sure about the 16” length barrel, but compactness doesn’t hurt, and I don’t think will matter much to me accuracy wise since I’m not very skilled yet in the first place.

Application was received and initial review was completed in May
CC was charged in October
Still nothing and the status hasn’t changed. Have called 3 times in November, December, and January and each time they just tell me it’s in the final stage and to call back in a month.
Super frustrated with this whole thing.

Is Corrosive 7.62x39 worth the trouble?
I will buy a Chinese SKS (chrome lined) in the near future.
I don't plan on hunting with it and won't be able to bring it to the range that often.
With that in mind, I like to stockpile (prepping), so cheap surplus ammo sounds great.
But I'm also worried about ruining my gun if I don't clean it properly.
Is corrosive surplus ammo worth it, or should I look into modern alternatives?
I don't care too much about pricing, as long as it's somewhat reasonable.

A) it's fine if you put in some effort to clean or spray your gun after use. It's not much of a hardship, especially if you only use it occasionally.
B) as for prepping surplus is better because it often comes already sealed in a tin and cheaper means you can have more money for other stuff. The hardship of cleaning your gun after use would be insignificant to the hardships you would encounter in any event where you need to shoot things to survive.

Hey all. I live with my parents still and they aren't comfortable with me keeping my ammo unlocked or in the safe with the guns. What do you guys use for ammo storage?

The law specifically says you can. The police say you can/should.
Do your parents want to buy you a second safe so you have one for guns and a different one for ammo? That would be nice of them. It means you can store more guns and ammo!

You could buy an old locking filing cabinet to store somewhere in the house if you can't convince your parents to see the rationale in storing your ammo in the gun cabinet. Used filing cabinets are usually pretty cheap, sometimes free if cost is a concern.

What are the rules surrounding target shooting on Crown Land in Ontario?

What you are looking for is “General Use” land with hunting permitted. That is the first step. Next you need to find out what municipality this land sits on. If it is “Unorganized” that means there is no municipality, and you’re good to go. It it does fall within a municipality, you need to check the bylaws there to see if they have anything governing the discharge of firearms. Some places ban it outside of hunting, some ban it within a certain area (usually near homes or infrastructure) some don’t allow it on Sundays. After all of that is done, make sure you do it safely. Have a backstop. Don’t shoot over a road or water. Know what is beyond your target and above all else, clean up after yourself.

Depends on the specific piece of land. Generally, if you can hunt on it, you can target shoot on it. I only caution you because I live in Ottawa near Marlborough Forest , where hunting is allowed but target shooting has been banned thanks to Karens.
Basically, I'd look for a "general use" crown land area, then call the local authorities and ask if you can set up targets and plink.

1) I think it would be best to call. Other than crosschecking my verification #s I havent used the website too much yet.
2) The new RPAL will come with a list of specific transport conditions. To go to the range with a handgun you need to have the updated card, updated conditions paper and the registration certificate on you.

Its the white piece of paper that your card will come attached to. It will say the following:
transport of restricted firearms registered to the license holder within their province of residence by reasonably direct route.
transport of restricted firearms possessed for the purpose of target practice to and from all shooting ranges
transport to and from a business that repairs or appraises
transport to and from a gun show
transport to and from a port of exit or from a port of entry
-carry this document with your license as you must be able to produce it on demand of a peace officer.

As a new enthusiast with a sizable budget I have a few questions, hopefully this doesn't get buried.
What I want: I want two guns, one PCC and one NR "AR style" riffle. I am already set on the Kriss vector .45ACP for my PCC but I'm not sold on anything else yet. What would be the "best" gun for accuracy and reliability and ease of use, say around 5k, not including an optic.
I picked out a Vortex UH-1 for the Kriss vector, but what is the "absolute best" optic for say 200-500m accuracy focused target shooting, say 1500-2000 for the optic, this is for the other TBD gun.

Anyone have any idea how long it would take RCMP to look at my application again after mailing it back for fixed errors/corrections? I mailed it more then a full business week ago now and its clearly marked as a RCMP return letter. Like would it be more then two weeks kinda thing, should I just call and see if they can pull it up and we can finish getting it approved? Because they should definitely have it in NB by now and I've been waiting over a year which they know as well.
I'm so close and it would be the most disappointing thing if it sits there for another couple months when all they have to do is take a quick look at two corrections and then its done.

Good luck, I had to send a new photo in March 2022( Originally sent in January2022) and then update my address in June, I was only approved at the start of this month.
progress was only made on my application when I called them at the times they told me to call back (even when I was told 1-2 more months it took another 6 in total)

I applied for restricted firearms license but got only the non-restricted. I remember being told the restricted is issued when you make your first restricted purchase but still unclear what the process is like. Appreciate anyone who can explain this.

You’re issued both endorsements at the same time. The only thing that changes after your first purchase is your transport privileges and the version code on your license.

Just thought I’d post an update and for anyone in Ontario waiting for there course report/proof of completion.:
I posted in last week or the week before newbie thread about the amount of time it took for the course report to get stamped and sent back to me, I took the the course at the end of December, and just today I got the results which was approximately 7 weeks for it to arrive. On the postage stamp it stated they mailed it on February 14th.
Took awhile compared to others, but at least I have it!

I've ordered mine, I'd like to have two mags for it and I'm pretty sure it only comes with one mag.
Other than GCN, is there a a website I could buy additional magazines for it? I can't seems to find any; or I'm very bad at looking.
That or does it take other magazines too? If yes, any recommendations?

Would someone be kind enough to msg me on the side so we can have a discussion about how I may find viable crown land for target shooting in Southern Onatrio? I've downloaded an app or two and perused the atlas on the Ministry of Natural Resources site, but it's all very hard to figure out.
I've got a hole in my pocket from the last year of being a PAL holder, lots of free weekends, a stack of ammo, but nowhere to shoot. Any help would be much appreciated.

What are the rules of the storage facility? It can be done but it requires permission from the property owner first, then from your CFO for restricted firearms.
You're going to need to talk to the CFO about it.

I think storage facility get broken into quite often, so I would have some reservations about storing it there.

Non-restricted (rifles): yes, provided they are safely stored and the storage facility's owner has no access to the unit. The storage facility might prohibit storage of firearms though.
Restricted (handguns): No, they can only be stored at the address on the registration certificate

I was just notified that my RPAL has been approved. I called the CFP and received the PAL # and expiration date. CFP said the PAL would print and be shipped in 6-8 weeks.
My question is… should I order online with my PAL # and Exp or do I need to wait until I have the card in hand? Thanks!

I took my Tikka 270 out for a shoot, and we got rained on a little bit. Took a peek at it a few days later, and the barrel and my shiny new vortex glass both had spots of rust on them. Not happy!
I didn't know what to do, so I took some oven cleaner and sprayed it on and tried to rub the rust off. It kinda worked, but now my vortex optics have some white staining on them.
Why did it rust so quickly and what do you guys do to prevent and or treat rust on guns? Total noob here.

When buying a new gun you should always take it apart, clean it, and lightly oil it. This will prevent rusting(though you should always dry off any parts that got wet as soon as you get home).
As for the scope, that is actually odd to me. I’m not a vortex guy but they have a good rep. If it’s brand new I’d bring it up to the shop you bought it from as there may have been a defect.

Crime, you create a prohibited firearm.
You can't legally shorten a barrel (by cutting or sawing) to be less than 18", the only way to "make" a short barrel rifle is to install a factory made short barrel. Like Dlaskarms does.

C-21 Amendment G46, which contained the GSG 15 and 16 by name, has been withdrawn. If C21 were to pass as-is, they would not be impacted. However, what the government tries to do next is anyone's guess.

AICS sell stocks/chassis. The AICS AT 2.0 line has a thumbhole stocksides conversion. RDSC have the chassis listed at ~$1900CAD, and it looks like the thumbhole conversion is ~$125CAD but they don't list it so you'd need to email them with a part #. It would all be special order, if you called or emailed they'd likely give you a rough timeline and price.
The thumbhole part #'s are: 26722 for fixed, 26723 for folding. PB for Pale Brown, GR for Green, and BL for Black. So, a complete part # for example would be 26722BL for fixed black.

Does anyone have experience buying gun parts/accessories from american distributors? There are some parts I want for a custom p320 and there is not much available in Canada for them. If I was to order say a slide and barrel from an american distributor is there a bunch of hoops I need to jump through? Hidden fee’s?

Some stuff can be shipped over the border, but a lot is subject to ITAR (look up what that is). That means you're not getting most if not all gun parts unless you import them, something that is complex and prohibitively experience for a one-of order. You'll probably want to get an importer business to bring in what you want. IRunGuns, Prophet River, Aztec Armory are some of the well known business that import for Canadian gun owners.

To expand on The_Crover's comment, some american distributors/retailers can export stuff to Canada besides the major importer businesses.
It just depends on if they have the permits, and are willing to do the paperwork etc. to legally ship it. But typically yes they would charge a little extra if they can export it directly to you, an example would be Opticscamp based in the US, they can export techsights to Canada but charge an international shipping fee on top of their normal shipping cost.
I would suggest contacting/emailing the distributor/retailer directly to ask if they can ship to Canada, and then it's on them to legally do it if they can.

Hi everybody. I am currently waiting for my PAL and was planning to buy a SKS and a type 81 when I get it. Is it worth it considering that the c21 will most likely ban them? Some people that I talked to say that if I own them they can’t take it back and others say they will come and take them themselves and I won’t be able to argue. What are your opinions on this?

Amendments were pulled, unlikely they will return in this bill as they will delay it from being pushed again and will likely be ruled out of scope in the end. Always the chance that they will table another bill specifically for banning semi-auto's but nothing is certain yet and you might as well just get one and keep it safe. As the other guy said, the chance of them actually launching a successful confiscation program even if they do ban semi's is near zero. Worst case scenario is that you hold onto it until this shit government goes and we can convince a conservative one to lift the bans. Or lose it in a boat accident :)

As to your other point, many police services and some provinces have said there will be no resources given to or made available to attempt any kind of confiscation not required by other actual criminal matters. Like my AR they would sit as safe queens until a new govt comes along.

The Transfer Notice works like an ATT from the store to your home. You'll then have to wait till the registration certificate for the restricted firearm shows up before being able to legally take it to the range.

browning bl-22 is my fav lever but some prefer winchester 94, they are both great and have different lever throws and point a bit differently. bl is a short throw and small unless you get the long octagon version, winchester is a more traditional feel and longer throw.
anschutz 1710 or 1712 is the best bolt alternatively I have had the steyr zephyr and also a sako finnfire2, both were inferior but had pros. sako had the best ejection but had a lesser fit and finish, and the steyr was lighter and a better hunting rifle with the bolt lock. the issues with the steyr for me was the bolt was a bit stiff, the length of pull was too long, and the mag release sucks. Honourable mention are the new anschutz 1761, I have one in 17hmr and it is also very nice - but haven’t tried it in 22
beware those are all $$$ but you asked for the best.
I have tried nearly every 22lr on the market except the cheapest offerings in a search for the best ( best meaning heirloom quality, fit, finish and function ) and these are the ones I have left. I like the bl-22 so much i have 2 it is an absolute blast with my dad.

Is recoil of the 12 gauge 3-in shotgun slug really bad? New to shotgun and have shoot my mossberg 500 12 gauge for 3 weeks. Today I bought a box of slug shells and then realized it’s 3-inch rather than 2 3/4 inch that I used to shoot.
I heard of 3-in has really bad recoil. Anyone could share how it feels? Would it be nightmare for first timers? Is it potentially more damage to the barrel ? The data stamp of mossberg 500 includes 3-in.

it depends on the shot but it can be bad if its a slug or high power load, you’ll be fine but it could be unpleasant. if you are new get some 8/9 shot for trap as practice.
as for your firearm it will be fine, you can shoot anything out of that, just make sure you use a cylinder choke for slugs so they don’t get squished

You might want to talk to your cfo or some other good non rcmp sources. This is a rare thing but Ive seen it asked occassionally. There is a whole clusterf**k about the status of AR reg cards since they were nullified/revoked/whatever the 2020 oic called it which is why I suspect (though I have no hard proof) they are not showing up. I would strongly err on the side of caution and exhaust all avenues of inquiry here.

Outside of places like irunguns and a sprinkling of others, no. The legal reasons as to why not, Im not gonna list but suffice to say a glock mag from bubba bobs bait and tackle in texas will not be allowed into canada for several reasons.
Try arsenalforce.ca for a starting point on extra glock mags.

Some chokes have coloured rings on them as well.

As far as my understanding goes chokes can either be an accessory to the barrel (i.e screwed in/adjustable ones which would have the notches on it) or the barrel can be built with a specific choke in which case it isn't interchangeable on that barrel. If you were to try to change the choke in that case I guess you would need to either get a different shotgun with the choke you want, or just get a different barrel with the choke you want.
This is all just stuff that I learned from my firearms instructor though so I can't be 100% sure

Absolutely, I deal with enough nasty and harsh chemicals at work. I’ll wear latex gloves when using the cleaner. Once finished I’ll stick any patches and qtips in the palm of a glove. Then pull them off at the wrist as you would providing first aid. Afterwards when oiling no.
