I took my Tikka 270 out for a shoot, and we got rained on a little bit. Took a peek at it a few days later, and the barrel and my shiny new vortex glass both had spots of rust on them. Not happy!

I didn't know what to do, so I took some oven cleaner and sprayed it on and tried to rub the rust off. It kinda worked, but now my vortex optics have some white staining on them.

Why did it rust so quickly and what do you guys do to prevent and or treat rust on guns? Total noob here.

When buying a new gun you should always take it apart, clean it, and lightly oil it. This will prevent rusting(though you should always dry off any parts that got wet as soon as you get home).

As for the scope, that is actually odd to me. I’m not a vortex guy but they have a good rep. If it’s brand new I’d bring it up to the shop you bought it from as there may have been a defect.

What kind of oil prevents rusting?

Realistically any oil will prevent water getting in which will prevent rusting. I just use standard hoppes lubricating oil.

Oven.
Cleaner.

Instead of oil you used some caustic cleaner?

Teflon spray is what you wanted.

Well it worked fine on my garden tools to remove rust. Like I said, noob. But yeah, feel like a dumbass.

Gun blue is a type of rust, slightly more durable than the red variety but still an oxide of iron. In the future be gentle with your guns.

What scope do you have? The bodies are constructed from aluminum, they shouldn't be able to rust.

But the screws are usually steel and can rust significantly.

True, but that's a funny thought. I always de-oil my screws, for the sake of torque accuracy, and I've literally never had one rust on any gun or optic
