Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread
Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.
First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.
This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.
To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.
We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.
Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Becoming a gun owner has led me to support Quebec separatism. Get them gone, Nathalie please leave too. You guys can make your own gun free utopia and the rest of us can keep our guns in peace. Itās a win win!
Iām joking. I donāt actually support that, and I deeply feel for Quebec gun owners. You guys are at the forefront of our cause. I think what I really hope is that Poly gets the mental health support that they genuinely need, and the liberals need to wisen up and stop pushing for unpopular ridiculous infringements on peopleās property. THATS a win win.

u/FunkyFrunkle May 26 '26
Iāve heard it said that this program is only popular in Montreal. Outside of Montreal in more rural areas it completely drops off in terms of support.
Ironic that a gun ban is most popular in a mob-run city.

u/Beneficial-Ride-4475 May 26 '26
If you believe the government's data, it like, only 4% of Quebecois who support this nonsense. So more like specific areas of Montreal.
6
u/Cock_ball_dickin May 26 '26
This. Itās unironically just a tiny portion of the populace, nation wide too, no one supports this
14
u/FunkyFrunkle May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26
This is perhaps one of the most annoying aspects of this whole debacle for me personally. It was literally a very small, vocal minority in Montreal that decided it wasnāt satisfied with the Firearms Act rewrite after all, and then promptly embarked on a crusade against a community that spans the entire country because they saw an opportunity to push more laws with all of the media attention U.S. mass shootings were receiving.
Itās a small, highly visible group that have this inflated sense of self-righteousness that somehow gives them the moral authority to dictate what everyone else should do from their point of view. This is also coming from a province that already has an outsized influence on Canadian politics, just behind Ontario.
Itās annoying. Itās frustrating and it is personal. How could it not be? I play by the rules. I worked hard for my money and sold years off of my life expectancy as a welder to be able to own these things and make a living. Some of these things represent my only physical connection to family members past and youāre seriously going to put your finger in my face like Iām the one whoās done something wrong, like Iām the one whoās responsible for what happened to you and tell me that Iām the one who has to surrender my shit? Youāre going to tell me that I donāt know whatās good for me?
With all due respect, go yell at the people who smuggle guns into the country. Go yell at the people who donāt have a PAL and buy those guns on the street so that they can use them to harass and terrorize other people.
9
u/gamercast1337 May 27 '26
Dont forget they are literally getting paid BY the federal government to in turn lobby the government.Ā
10
u/RydNightwish May 27 '26
If Tommy Lukazuk out in AB is prepared to do and does the one thing the country he is campaigning for won't, namely financially compensate me for 20K of lost property if we lose the SCC, then maybe I can be swayed back.
canada with a small c turned its back on me in 2020, 23, 24 and only offered a "wanna go to jail or go home" solution. Ill gladly watch it crumble since its clearly hell bent on seeing me burn first.
This has gone too far and too long. Poly deserves no help, no support, no understanding and no sympathy. Full fucking stop. Sorry for the language mods but in this one instance its absolutely warranted.

I knew that after I became a gun owner, because of my rather syncretic beliefs, that I wouldn't be welcomed anywhere in particular. I knew very specifically that the major population centers of Quebec would be a hassle (Toronto too I suppose).
I'm not going to lie, an irrational part of my brain really likes the idea of Quebec Separatism but only for Quebec City and Montreal. Is that stupid? You bet, but it is a thought that amuses me.
11
u/Q-Ball7 In the end, it's taxes all the way down May 26 '26
I think Canada makes more sense closer to a Swiss-style confederation for this reason.
There's zero reason anyone in Montreal should be making laws for me, and if Montreal will always vote one way in opposition to the entire rest of the province, why should they get a veto over what the rest of the province wants?
I think that if one area always votes one way, and the rest of that area always votes another way, that it's a very clear sign they shouldn't be making laws that dictate the culture either should have.
"Because it's tradition" is not a valid argument.

Two things happened today that i'd like to share.
I went to the grand opening of new reliable gun store here. Although i drove an hour to get there, i just turned around in the parking lot. Why? The line up was impossibly wrong at 915am. It looked like elvis or beatles got resurrected.Ā
This shows even in a bleeding heart province like bc, there is a strong firearms community. That's encouraging.Ā
Again here in bc, new leader of the opposition got elected. Kerry lynne fidland did an interview with Ccfr as a leadership candidate. BC ndp is so far behind in the poll. She will be likely the next premier of bc. Which will be a good thing for the firearms community here in bc.

u/Natural_Comparison21 May 31 '26
Something people forget is that despite pretty much non stop gun laws the number of PAL holders in Canada has kept increasing. Now I am not sure what the numbers for 2025 are going to be but I have a feeling where going to see more PAL holders then the year before.

As BC resident we must ensure a victory by going out and voting when the time comes. This is really important even for the younger folk here that may be demoralized and let down by the government. You jest, but I had someone say effectively that in a different sub. They considered the Orwellian surveillance and police state powers of the Liberal bills to be a reasonable tradeoff to the mass extermination they were convinced the Conservatives would perform if they were elected. I wish I was joking.

14
u/Lumindan May 29 '26
Don't get me wrong, Gary is not a good MP. but let's be real. He's just a walking talking puppet for the Liberal upper brass to use and then dump.
Credit where it's due, he's an exceptional lightning rod for Carney. He can push all the unsavoury policies the Liberals LOVE while keeping Carney's image clean.

So will the government go after the Bishnoi gang, that is allegedly armed 1000 strong, as hard as they did after GSG 15 owners?
I weep for this country's future.
25
u/Lumindan May 29 '26
If you think about it, Public Safety has never really been about safety for the public.
it's been about enforcing rules on the public for the safety of the government.
As far as they're concerned, the Bishnoi gang is doing them a favour.
11
u/Brapika May 29 '26
Public safety really does feel like safety from the government. Basically an abusive relationship rather than servitude to the people.

18
u/gamercast1337 May 29 '26
I have liberal friends who would say this is either fake, nothing to worry about or trust mark carney in his ability to deal with this.
I fucking hope more people get hurt by this at this rate, make it so it cant be ignored anymore how ineffective police and the government are and have people take their own safety into their own hands. Rooftop Korean situations essentially. People going out in mobs to just obliterate known gang members and their families.Ā
The Canadian police are too busy giving tickets to people speeding or not willing to shaken down for license plate renewal than go after literal terrorists. We know what they would do in the event this goes further.
12
u/Natural_Comparison21 May 29 '26
Something I once heard was "The law doesn't protect innocent people. As often innocent people can't even get a good lawyer to have there day in court be successful. It protects the government and criminals." The funny thing is about organized crime and a mob is that they aren't invincible. The percentage of people in a organized crime group is always going to be in a minority. So it wouldn't take much for someone being extorted by one of these groups to stand up to said mob with everyone else who is being extorted by them and then suddenly the mob ain't hot shit. But in the 'developed' world we don't let that happen. Because those organized criminals that are extorting you have rights. More rights then you do to not be extorted by them. Because the law protects criminals. It doesn't protect victims. Victims are a after thought.
9
u/Late_Winner6859 May 29 '26
It makes more sense when you realize that the biggest extortion racket is run by the government itself

Not sure if it's real or not, but if that's indeed real, then Canada have some big festering wounds that seriously need addressing.
And then we suppose to turn in our legally obtained firearms when there are donkeys out there give zero regards about anything?
7
u/Natural_Comparison21 May 30 '26
Bro said full auto firearms... One of them was a over under shotgun and I am pretty sure the other was a SKS. The one thing that really was concerning in terms of firearms was the handgun under the police vest which might be a pellet/bb gun? Then again that's with me giving the benefit of the doubt. They are still being very fucking bad with firearms safety here and at min should be seeing jail time just for public endangerment alone. But nope. Can't hold actual people threating the public accountable. Gotta go after the literal victimless criminals.

Can't have uppity citizens thinking they can defy the wishes of the government and get away with it. It's about more than guns, it about who is in control, who has the power. If they backtrack now it will be us and they simply can't have that.

Last I checked Wab literally said the gun ban is dumb. You are conflicting the federal NDP with the prov NDP. The prov NDP is often quite different from the federal NDP (especially under Singh he sucked.) You know the NDP party in Sask straight up supported the conservative leading party on opposing the gun ban as well right? I get it the federal NDP has been pretty fucking cringe and the BC NDP is not fucking helping the case of the NDP not being anti gun. But it's pretty broad strokes to say the NDP period is anti gun at every level.

Kinda insane that despite our economy going down the shitter, the LPC is gaining EVEN MORE POPULARITY. We are probably stuck with an LPC majority for the next 10-20 years to be honest, as Canadians are hopelessly captured by the party. I have no idea how a single political party in any country can pull this off outside of being a literal dictatorship.
27
u/rastamasta45 Jun 03 '26
Iām honestly gob smacked at how captured the Canadian public are. Life is getting objectively worse for the everyday Canadian and the LPC are not only responsible but now passing draconian spy bills to boot. Doing nothing to address our rampant crime problem and yet people are still clamouring for daddy Carney to stay in power. Itās actually insane.
I donāt think itās a matter of āthings have to get worseā but more so āit will get worseā because why should the LPC honestly care about improving the country, they keep getting voted back in. Once we completely lose all property rights, once itās unaffordable to even get a loaf of bread, maybe Canadians will wake upā¦.too bad weāre disarmed already by that point.
20
u/2Puppers4Sale Boating Enthusiast Jun 03 '26
The Canadian future is UK style anarcho-tyranny, in which violent criminals are ignored by law enforcement but ordinary citizens are expected to obey ridiculous laws or face the full force of the "justice" system.
12
u/Reasonable_Hall2346 Jun 04 '26
Speaking of the UK, the recent murder of Henry Nowak and the failure of the police officers is all stemming of government failures that we are copying.
12
u/AnonCGN178 Jun 04 '26
I've seen Liberals defend the UK police and victim blame Nowak, they are beyond delusional.
10
u/CenturionV Jun 04 '26
Canadians are both chronically online and incredibly gullible when it comes to MSM consumption and as such now have a case of incurable stage 5 Trump derangement syndrome.Ā
I think deep down they know things are getting worse, but it is the cowards way to never admit any fault and blame it on someone, anyone else. And low and behold there is an ultra convenient, single polarizing, news and world events dominating, individual to blame for literally everything.
I don't think we get a conservative government in Canada while Trump is in office. The liberals have a perfect scapegoat and if they torpedo the trade talks (which will no doubt cause Trump to go off) they can blame the recession/collapse entirely on Trump. It's got a bow on it for liberals to deflect all criticism and their loyal following to keep their head in the clouds. That debt to the truth will come due eventually, but will be something that could take decades to reverse. Country is cooked boys.

Yeah okay LPC... Will Carney's kid be leaving school in the USA too to now attend a local Canadian community college? Whatever happened to "buy Canadian"?!
Carney literally has no skin in the game in the success of the country. It could fully collapse and his money would still be safe in the USA and he would just jet back off to Europe, or maybe California.Ā

u/Lumindan Jun 03 '26
Polls are rolling and the Liberals have a great media spin game (the amount of people trying to use the term 'technical recession' is hilarious).
Combine that with the fact that many people build their lives around 'not being maple maga'. So instead of addressing the core policy issues, it's all "well the conservatives did this in 2013" instead of holding their own government accountable. Plus the real sad part is most voters just vote on vibes.
Things need to get worse. People love voting governments out historically speaking and when people struggle to add shit to their carts at Costco or can't afford that six pack at the beer store, that's when they get pressed.

Sorry peon only criminals and the government (insert it's the same picture meme) are allowed those. And of course those who already had them because uh they're dangerous but also not at the same time. And in our hands they protect you but when in your hands they uh kill you. Now don't ask how those guns we have are used to protect corporations I mean you yes we would never send in people to kill you to attempt to steal your land for a golf course or anything else for that matter. Yes in our hands guns keep you safe and I guess brink truck drivers but don't question our logic on that. Yes it's to protect the brinks truck drivers definitely not the money. But no no peon when you carry it that far to dangerous you aren't in enough danger to justify it despite the fact we hold a contricatry claim. There is no war with Oceina. Elbows up.

The thing to keep in mind is that this still goes a respectably long way for shifting public opinion on this whole thing. It hurts the legitimacy of the program even more.
We can quibble over what exact legal arguments theyāre going put forward and wether or not it really helps the case but at the end of the day, more provinces that want to become involved in the case against the government is objectively a positive thing because it keeps making the issue too big to ignore. It also sends a message to Ottawa that reaffirms how much of a headache this is, and that the provinces want nothing to do with it.
Itās stuff like this that dampens the political appetite to push for more.
This program is objectively a failure. Not just from our point of view; it is a failure. They only got 26,000 people out of 2.5 million potential owners to turn in their prohibited guns, which are well below even the governments low-ball expectations. A litany of police forces in some pretty big cities where you would expect this to be popular have all refused to participate. Almost all of the provinces and territories are against it and now itās going to the Supreme Court with more provinces getting on board in the fight.
The gun control groups have been allowed to command the terms and conditions of this conversation from the safety of a vacuum for far too long and now the government is looking at potentially having their executive power legally neutered because of it. I cannot imagine theyāre terribly happy about that, and I would hope that this forces them to reevaluate their close relationship with the gun control groups.
You love to see it. For a country that supposedly loves gun control, it doesnāt seem to be going so well.
9
u/floydsmoot May 27 '26
>The thing to keep in mind is that this still goes a respectably long way for shifting public opinion on this whole thing
That's the thing. The majority of Canadians either hate guns or really don't give a shit about them. I suspect more of the latter. If you have no skin in the game, you're not going to fight against these stupid gun laws (and I'm not talking about Fudds whom I don't trust).
Show Canadians a use for guns (other than hunting or sport shooting) and they'll stand up to these idiots.
The only way I can see that happening if guns are accepted as a viable means of self defence.

It's certainly not a real W in the conventional sense. I mean, I'll take it, but Ford just waited to see what direction the wind was blowing, there isn't any conviction or commitment in his statement.

According to another user who's more legally minded in this sub, it's not that Ontario is taking a side, they're just there to follow through/ensure their toes are not being stepped on.

Whatever happened with that lawsuit about the handgun freeze basically making your property valueless?Ā
Edit: talked to Tony Bernardo. Case went nowhere since the handgun freeze was legislation passed in parliament. Such a great country, government just votes that your property has no valueĀ

u/Dill_Pickle_Tears May 28 '26
On that same note, I wonder if the topic of the handgun freeze will be discussed in the CCFRās case.
I know that you canāt necessarily introduce new evidence and the OICs are a different legal mechanism, but I really wish we could push back against this more
5
u/boozefiend3000 May 28 '26
Nothing we can do on that one since parliament voted on it. CCFR case is about the government using OICās improperly
18
u/rastamasta45 May 28 '26
I legitimately wonder how the libs will do with the referendum question, a massive sticking point is the gun ban, I legitimately wonder how much more pressure is this program going to take. How much more can the libs double down on this failed project ??
15
u/Lumindan May 28 '26
Given how they're ramming c22 through the house, I assume they'll just ram that through as well. Same way c21 went.
They've already whipped up a huge media frenzy with people slandering Alberta and Danielle Smith.
5
u/gamercast1337 May 28 '26
But Quebec, provincial and federal parties are coming to Alberta defense if not for any other reason than it directly effects them too. They may hate eachothers guts but they can unite on the feds with thisĀ

u/RydNightwish May 28 '26
Depends. If the seat gullible is vacating has a chance of bloc picking it up then I expect it to be a key talking point in that by election. Right now whats likely go happen is the SCC grants an injunction forcing another amnesty extension. Then the case gets tried Q1 next year.
The libs will quintuple down until the court (hopefully) says either the OICs were all illegal or that the govt MUST pay everyone every single dollar of actual value if they wont grandfather. Only thing that will stop them from digging deeper is being able to say well we tried but the court said no or the true, astronomical billions and billions cost of doing a serious buyback is forced on them. The real cost of that bill will be something they cant spin or sell no matter how many davos speeches carney could muster.
The referendums are not even on thier radar (coincidentally liberal radar just registers a blank void once you go west of toronto).Ā
18
u/Reasonable_Hall2346 Jun 01 '26
Today is June 1st, approximately 62 days since the end of the declaration period, and only 152 days left in the amnesty period. Obviously the number of firearms actually collected remains at 22, thanks to the Cape Breton extremely successful pilot program. Seeing as how we have zero reported confirmed confiscation appointments, there is absolutely no way they can wrap this shitshow in the next 152 days.

Considering how things unfold itself for this tragic event due to multiple red flags missed. I think Carney would need to first clear up their own "misinformation" with MSM in Canada.

A question thatās been pretty beat to death at this point, but would you want to see a constitutional right to bear arms similar to the United States, along with similar laws? (Permitless carry, no magazine capacity restrictions, suppressors)

One correction. Along with "not murica, Canadians have an inarguable fetish for mediocrity. Liberals love the smell of thier own farts and the state of things as long as they can feel they are better than just america rather than striving to actually be better than half or more other members of the G7.

Given a magic choice of a US style right to bear arms in this country, I'd take it. I don't think that it is necessarily the best system that could exist, but it is the best we would ever have.
I think the ideal system would be one similar to the Czech Republic, where the shall issue license to purchase and own a handgun is a carry permit. If you can't be trusted to carry a handgun, I don't see why you should be trusted to own one. In that sense it is actually quite similar in philosophy to 2nd amendment style constitutional carry, but with an upfront barrier to entry that ensures competence and excludes those with dangerous criminal history.
The problem is that I don't trust this country to ever implement such a system, and even if it somehow did, I have no faith that it would actually last. Our opposition will never be satisfied. We will always be scapegoated, and our privileges under our laws will always be eroded. Canadian political views on aggregate are, frankly, dystopian.
When the leaders of this country decided to draft the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, they specifically chose to maintain a nuclear option just in case they need to violate your right to life, or your right to a fair trial, or your right against cruel and unusual punishment. What's worse is that people in this country unironically argue that section 33 is a good thing, just in case the Supreme Court gets all uppity and tells the government "no, you cannot legally enact a holocaust". All that tells me is that the average Canadian fantasizes themselves as an oppressor, rather than fearing being oppressed.
So, given the political philosophy that we have the misfortune to live under, if I had a magic choice between adding a real (immune to section 33) right to bear arms to our charter, versus replacing the firearms act with a good faith Czech style licensing system, I'd take the right to bear arms.

u/HappyCan7250 Jun 02 '26
For the most part, yes.Ā
I'm okay with our licensing system, at least aspects of it. I do like making people gain some basic competency in a safe setting before buying a gun. In the US its fairly common and easy for someone to have a friend or family member reach them, but that's not always the case for Canadians. I do like that people have to prove competency and safe handling, to a certain extentĀ
I do certainly wish we had suppressors, and access to hand gun purchases again.
The concealed carry is a tough one for me. I morally, support it, from a basic rights perspective, BUT I hate seeing in the US when what would normally have been a small fist fight, maybe a couple of punches between 2 men, turns into a shooting and death. However, there is also many cases where someone saves their own life, or a lived ones life, because they were carrying. It is a complex issue. I just don't want people in the cities to necessarily resort to pulling out a handgun over a road rage incident, because while 99% would not, one or two would. I support it in theory, but I think the execution of it would need to be careful. It also varies massively from state to state, some allow it for everyone, some are very strict. Some sort of middle ground maybe would work here. I also absolutely support individuals being able to carry handguns in the woods without needing to get an ATC, I think that is ridiculous that they need approval to say take a handgun on a deer hunt in bear country.
The magazine restrictions here are ridiculous and have never saved a single life. Remove them.
Ultimately, I think a blend between our system (pre-2020, or maybe say Harper era after the LGR was gone), combined with some aspects of the US system, would be a happy middle ground.
It's a complex subject, but our system is awful. I think it was good in the past, and I would've been content with our laws around say 2014, and said we had a fairly good system, not perfect, but good.Ā

I would prefer something more along the lines of what the Czechs personally.
"The right to defend one's own life or the life of another person even with the use of a weapon is guaranteed under the conditions laid down by law."
Now I would also add something along the line of, "the right to sustain one's own life or the life of another person through hunting" & "the right to keep a weaopn/s for that purpose," but otherwise I'd leave the Czech wording unchanged as far as self defense goes.

No. And the reason being is that the constitution is still largely dictated by the laurentian strip. Any "right" to arms would not be based on reason or practicality but what least upsets the sensitivities of montreal and toronto. Ergo it would be functionally useless if it exists at all.
The better way is to strengthen property rights, self defence and offload them to provincial jurisdiction and discretion. Naturally, some get left behind (move then) but some getting ahead is infinitely better than none getting ahead.

A while back I found out that my gun club/range would take in prohibited firearms as donations to their future planned firearms museum and also they would able to take in donated prohibs so that they could be used for range use and kept at the club. They have the proper licensing in order to keep and use prohib firearms on their range.
Luckily I only own one currently prohib'd firearm which was previous NR but if it gets close to the October 30th date then I will end up just donating the gun to my gun club. Sure I'll lose out on the gun and the money I spent on it but I will feel better knowing that it will not be confiscated/destroyed by the feds and that someone else will get to enjoy shooting it at some point or it becomes a museum piece worst case.
In the meantime it's staying with me and if the amnesty gets extended again it will keep staying with me.

u/YourSnipingOperator Jun 04 '26
Throwaway account for obvious reasons.
Im a cop and participated in the buyback with my restricteds (did not declare any of manyĀ former NRs). Do not shoot the messenger for what Im about to say as my opinions are purely expressed to inform you and not sugarcoat or provide copium. For the record Ive been a gun owner much longer than a cop and own far more non restricted non-cope rifles than you would imagine (to the detriment of my finances) and joined the CCFR in its infancy. Here's a few things I'll comment on:
The participants generally seem to be older gen x/boomer types, or other law enforcement professionals (think Corrections/Sheriffs/etc) who arent exactly in a position to be keeping a registered prohibited firearm on paper and thus committing an offense. Myself and other colleagues have theorized that at least in the RCMP, there will be a chance that once the amnesty is up they will start doing Code of Conducts on Members that didnt comply as the Commissioner is a yes-man for the Liberals. They will make sure that the firearms registry is provided for this purpose in a lawful way to do this so that they don't get in shit down the road for it. Even if they do, consequences evidently dont apply to Liberal yes-men.
In spite of that, there are tons of cops that arent participating at all, but in those cases they only have NRs that are now prohibited. Can't say Ive spoken to one yet with a registered restricted that didnt sign up to turn it in. These cops are just going to stay quiet and never give up what they have as there is no proof anywhere that they have it. I wont provide legal advice but take away from that what you will.
Cops are not going door to door, even if asked. It is also a monumental task to perform while already short staffed. There are many simpler enforcement mechanisms that I will comment on later.
In my opinion, and this is in spite of the CCFR case, those with restricteds are completely fucked if they didn't participate in the buyback. This government has shown time and time again that it will continue to be spiteful to gun owners, and anyone who had a registered restricted is a slam dunk target. The only thing I can see happening is that there is a 2nd round of the buyback opening back up due to not having enough participation in the 1st round, in which case that will likely be the final offramp for those with anything registered to their name.
In regards to point 4, I see the following, very realistic scenarios playing out by the end of the amnesty, regardless if it is extended, and I'll order them from most to least likely. To be frank, I do not believe the CCFR case will make a material difference as the Liberals can and will codify the OICs into law if need be.
Option A: Anyone with a registered restricted who has not either deactivated/turned in/destroyed it will receive a threatening letter from the CFO/RCMP and will face a PAL revocation after Oct 31st. At that point you'll have no leg to stand on and will have to surrender your firearms. In this case, Police can and may go so far as to obtain a search warrant based off the evidence that you are in illegal possession of X gun bearing X serial number. If that amount of effort is being put in, you would be catching a possession charge too.
For anyone that owns a handgun, they will likely fold the second they receive that letter as theyll otherwise lose their handguns too. You now receive no compensation for what you turned in.
I strongly believe this option is the most likely as it does the most damage to gun owners while the government has to do very little, and at this point spend even less. The government was more than happy to see non-compliance on the part of registered restricted owners because they will provide the perfect whipping boys. Revoking your PAL is very easy and doesnt require anyone to go door to door. Enforcement of course is a different matter.
Option B: The amnesty gets extended another year because uptake wasnt what they wanted. Maybe a 2nd buyback round gets initiated. Then after that, Option A occurs after that.
Option C: Grandfathering without usage, just like all the boomers with 12(x) on their PALs. This isnt a win for you either, because now that all the boomers are dying and the government codified no longer passing down the 12(x) endorsements to family, those guns usually just get destroyed or sold to businesses/auctions for pennys on the dollar. It is the least enjoyable part of my job to go to these homes after a boomer passes away, seeing incredible collections, and then it ends up that the family or wife want nothing to do with the guns despite me offering to assist them with other methods that don't include destruction.
Yes, theres a chance that by next election the Liberals are out and maybe in 3 years youll be able to use them again. However, in my opinion, you need to act and prepare for what the reality is now and what it likely will be next election, which is that as long as the Liberals remain in power, gun owners will not see any relenting on the Liberals part to stop their repeated abuse.
I would rather be a PAL holder that has zero registered guns to their name, and ride this government out until they are gone.
Again, please do not shoot the messenger. I do not support the bans, the buyback, or anything else related to them from a moral point of view.Ā
10
u/WeightedDips95 Jun 04 '26
Everybody had a choice whether or not to participate in the buyback, no?
Even if you wanted to stay on the right side of the law, there were ways to come into compliance without validating the Liberal extortion vote-getting scheme.

If the cops arenāt coming door to door to collect banned rifles due to staffing issues can they really go door to door for PAL revocations? Isnāt that the exact same problem?
→ More replies (3)7
u/Reasonable_Hall2346 Jun 04 '26
They don't need to go door to door for PAL revocations. When its time to renew you will just never get that RPAL back.
NAL, but this is my plan: If the amnesty is not extended I am self destroying my banned firearms (restricted) and calling it in with the CFO by providing the serial number of the destroyed firearms. As far as I know no proof of destruction is necessary, and since it will actually be destroyed, it should be good.

u/YourSnipingOperator Jun 04 '26
This is a scenario ive talked with coworkers about. Lots of reports in october of destroying firearms. As far as I know, you are correct that there is technically no legal requirement of proof for destruction. It is an offense to lie about destruction, but it has to be proven in the first place. As long as you dont hit your girlfriend/wife/dog there shouldn't be a cop in your house looking for guns anyways.

10
u/FunkyFrunkle May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26
Nothing.
Nobody is likely getting paid outside of Quebec.
They slashed the compensation budget from over $200,000,000 to $64,000,000. Meanwhile, theyāre laying off a huge number of people in government with Public Safety having the largest number of layoffs.
Safe to say theyāre laying off most of the people who are working on this program, because the buyback program is responsible for most of the hiring in Public Safety to begin with.
The likelihood of anyone getting paid in the next two years is slim. The likelihood of anyone getting paid even half of what theyāre owed is even slimmer.
Anyone who participated fucked up big time. All they did was give the government a list of guns they have and theyāll likely get ripped off and fucked over for their trouble.

Unofficially, itās the fact thereās been zero movement for this ban since the end of the declaration period. They still have 67,000 rifles to collect and no way to actually collect them outside of Quebec and Waterloo Region and Winnipeg, which by my count is not where all 67,000 rifles are currently located.
Demented Chipmunk still havenāt announced who is doing the mythical mobile collection units or getting the army of 70 year old retired RCMP officers. So honestly thatās good news to me!

I find it nuts that they still haven't made any announcements on who or how they're going to collect. October is coming up fast. They literally have no clue whatsoever what they are doing here and I think they realized they're screwed.Ā
If they were proud of this file, we'd see Carney trying to distract constantly with it.
Honestly, I don't get how the fuck Carney is polling so well still. With his $500k catering bill for airplane food, the recently announced recession, Bill C22 backlash, failing on the trade file then literally saying "Canada can help Make America Great Again!" at a speech in the US. How the hell is the liberal base still supporting this guy? He's literally gone against EVERYTHING he campaigned on and the elbozos up crowd is still cheering him on and licking his boots like he's the new coming of Christ.Ā
Honestly, I think Carney is a buffoon dressed in a suite who talks the talk, but has no idea how to walk the walk.
Guarantee, you could pull just about any decent blue collar worker or business owner off the street and they'd do a better job of managing the economy of this country. The guy literally has no clue what he's doing when it comes to economics. So much for the "brilliant banker" who has somehow managed to handle the economy worse than the drama teacher.
