I sent in my application for PAL/RPAL which was received Sept 9. I had the "initial process completed" message for a while and figured I was just in the queue, but 4 months is a while, especially with no obvious red flags on my person. Called in and had an agent tell me I missed a question, but I was able to answer it over the phone and was approved while on the call, and the agent was able to provide my PAL number and I confirmed it's working since I can now log in as a PAL holder.
Moral of the story: call the number

I've been looking at ranges; living in GTA makes most option seem ridiculous.
TSC: Didn't really like it there last time
Gagnon: 600 a year is really high, for short ranges at pretty short hours
Sharon: Highly doubt I can afford a share
Silverdale: Heard it's gotten worse recently?
East Elgin: Maybe this? Will have to commit a whole weekend and rent Airbnb to make it worth it, tbh
Range Burlington: Not accepting members
CFB Borden: I can get in, but I can't bring guests / friends can't get in as associate mbr due to cap
Lower Trent: I have cheap on base accommodations so it's actually not bad, or I can stay at my friends' for free there. Still need to commit a few days, probably
BRG: Hours make it impossible
Any other, realistically? I want to shoot my 6.5 lol. And a handgun...

I got a brand new Stoeger Coach. I see evidence that the wood fore end originally had a crack, however the manufacturer went ahead glued it and finished the piece anyways. Should I be asking for a replacement?

Just bought myself a WS-MCR and love it. But after mounting my TRS-25 red dot on it I feel its way too low for me. What hight riser do you guys prefer? Or what hight is your sight at on a simular rifle?
Also maybe a dumb question but this mounts onto a Pic rail correct? https://www.rdsc.ca/american-defense-picatinny-riser-mount-5-slot-high-titanium-qd-lever.html

The trs-25 comes in an ar version with the riser in the box, I believe it's one inch high.

Really good and spending a fortune are unfortunately synonymous. 911 Supply and SRS Tactical have decent stuff, both of which are located in Alberta.
4
u/throwa37 Jan 26 '23
I've gotten a lot of stuff, including my PC, belt, and IFAK, from SDTac. Lots of good stuff and fast shipping.
Not looking to spend a fortune on anything
Be prepared to put together a setup slowly over time. Cheap stuff is available, but it's cheap for a reason. You've gotta ask yourself if this kind of gear is really what you want to cheap out on. If you needed it, and it didn't work because it sucked, that would be bad.

For anyone who is expecting their "printed" PAL for over a month now, I recommend calling the CFP at 800-731-4000. I called and got through in less than 15 minutes. Turns out they had printed mine but there was no apartment number on file for me. Maybe I goofed and didn't put it into the application or it was a data entry error.
In any case, they voided the "printed" card and asked for it to be "reprinted". Guess I gotta keep waiting, but if I hadn't called I would have never received it.

Dumb question, but I got the email that my first restricted purchase just went through.
Can I pick it up from the store now? Or do I have to wait until the registration certificate arrives in the mail?
3
2
u/Beretta_errata removeddit pro Jan 24 '23
Instructions are in the email.
2
u/ClassyCilantro Jan 24 '23
The email says I can take possession but I guess my question is more can I bring it to the range before the registration and new PAL card with the ATT printed on it arrive.
2
u/Beretta_errata removeddit pro Jan 24 '23
You need your registration, not just the registration notification, if you want to transport anywhere other than to your home. If it's your first firearm you need your revised rPAL card to transport.

My non restricted license says it's been "reviewed and if more information is needed they will contact me"
It's said this since I got the email the application has been received (December 20th)
I applied online. Ant idea when I can call the RCMP and get my PAL number?
No criminal record or mental health issues, nothing that should make the progress longer.
5
u/The_Crover Jan 24 '23
You'll have to wait for the "License has been issued" status to update. That's when you'll actually be able to be given a PAL number out via phone.
2
u/SlickRick_39 Jan 24 '23
Okay and at that time I should be able to call in and get my PAL number.
Anyone have an idea how long that takes recently? My application was reviewed on December 20th. Probably a but longer than the 1 month some people experienced with online application because of the Hollidays in December I bet.
2
u/JackalDark Jan 24 '23
Depending on what province, could be weeks or months..
I've been waiting since August in Ontario, my wife got hers in the mail a few weeks ago and sent hers in October or November.
Seems completely random or biased.

I'm a little broke but have wanted to get my license for years. Given recent events, I'm starting to consider blowing a chunk of my savings getting the licenses and a firearm or two. What are the odds that I'll be able to get the course, the test, the license, 2 firearms, all before C-21 goes through with the amendments? What kind of costs am I looking at here? Is the market still squeezed to fuck? My friend told me SKS's tripled in price. I was hoping to get a Soviet one, since I don't trust Chinese engineering nor quality control. I'm in Quebec, if it's relevant.
4
u/Bushido_Plan Jan 28 '23
Best time to get your license was yesterday. Next best time is today. I don't know about Quebec but if it's like literally any other province, expect months and months of wait time between the time you submit your application and you receiving it. Give or take a few months.
2
u/Scopequest Jan 27 '23
If you're short of money (and not expecting finances to get better) I wouldn't rush out to get a gun, especially if you expect it to get banned.
It's not just the course and gun cost. You need to buy ammo to use it.
It's really dependent on how broke you are and what the future outlook is.

Do it, I got my license last year, the only regret I have is why I didn’t do it sooner.
SKS is around $500-600 for the newest Chinese import that have not been fired and in mint condition. And nothing wrong with Chinese SKS.

Taking my CFSC in 2 days, Just curious to know how long i can expect to wait once i make my application for my PAL. Live in Quebec, no criminal record, Diagnosed ADHD and anxiety disorder (being treated). I have a background of firearms training and use in competition (i was in the army cadets, and participated in seasonal shooting competitions with fullbore rifles for 2 years, as well as had responsibility with assisting RSO's and ammunition distribution during these competitions. )
does my background and/ or mental health conditions matter all that much when being considered for a license? Am i just overthinking it all? I'm excited to start partaking in the hobby, with the hopes of competing once again at the same range and competitions that i did as a teenager

Unlikely that either your experience or diagnosis will affect your approval. Although your diagnosis might delay the application pending further review.
Good idea to include a doctor's note explaining your diagnosis/treatment.

Chiappa M1, gun handling yes, marksmanship no
9mm is not a rifle round, it won't be accurate at long ranges
2
u/chillyrabbit Jan 23 '23
Both Chiappas are named in the G46 amendment, as variants of the M1 Carbine.
I would buy a chiappa only if you like the aesthetics of the M1 Carbine, because there are other 22's and 9mm carbines that are just plain better rifles than them.
2
u/black_covfefe_please Jan 24 '23
Chiappa M1 is mostly cool because it looks like a M1 Carbine. It is not an exact reproduction, but is reasonably accurate in appearance. Most of the reviews I have read are not all that favourable. Honestly, stick to a well made modern 22. If you are looking for a semi-automatic, Savage A22, Winchester Wildcat, or the always popular Ruger 10/22.

For those that were approved but didn’t received the card yet … how did you get your licence number? Just by calling? I’ve seen some ppl that have bought online with just their pal number
2
u/wlit1007 Jan 23 '23
You just call in and ask. When I did, I was told I'm unable to buy guns or ammo until I had my card.
2
Jan 23 '23
Some online stores do ask for a photocopy of your PAL. Those who don’t, it’s your call to make whether you want to place an order.
Traditionally you need your ID for instore purchases, so it’s obvious to me that the RCMP say you need to have your card for any purchase. I just assume that if I have a valid license I’m legally authorized to purchase online regardless of where my physical card is, but I’ve never obtained a legal opinion about this.

Is it just my phone, or does entering an extension not work when calling the 1-800 CFP number?
edit: I tried with two different phones, and the robo machine tells me that they haven't received an input or whatnot, and hangs up after three tries. Nontheless, I've asked the general inquiry line and they said that it's a known issue, so I'll just try again in a couple days.

Aside from a VZ 61 or something truly unique/rare I would say none. Especially right now, go NR all the way. Govt and mounties don't need an easy to follow paper trail. One day this stupidity will cease and at that point you could get a shorter barrel put on if you so choose.

Question about Restricted Storage
I am about to get my first handgun approved, and before I go and spend $1000s of dollars on a large safe, I kind of want to wait and see how C-21 shakes out. IF it goes through as they've proposed, I'll have no use for a large safe. Do we have any idea on the timeline for this either? (C-21)
Also, wondering what if there are any realistic storage options people have used for their Restricteds besides a safe. I know its not very clear, but a locking container, could a locking gun case stand for that, plus having it trigger locked in the case?
3
u/_Connor Jan 24 '23
I know its not very clear
I mean, it's relatively clear. You can store it exactly how it's shipped/sold to you. In the OEM manufacturers box with a case lock on the box and a trigger lock on the pistol.
2
u/ggdrguy Jan 24 '23
I can’t answer your first question but yes a locked container with a trigger lock in the gun is sufficient for storage.
→ More replies (1)2
u/black_covfefe_please Jan 24 '23
The law states...
"rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device and stored in a container, receptacle or room that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into,"
The bar is really low here. A "container" or "receptical" is really almost anything that can be locked.

Hey all,I've decided to grab a Tikka T3x CTR as my first firearm, based on many great reviews and how it felt in my hands. I'm planning to use this long-term for target shooting and hunting - which it seems like it's well suited to be capable of doing.
I haven't hunted before, but planning on going out maybe next season, so I'd like to purpose-proof my purchase. I've done some research of my own but I would love some advice from experienced folk on the points below!
- 6.5 creedmoor vs .308 win - seems like 6.5 CM has better ballistics and lighter but slightly more expensive per round (does it really make a practical difference?)
- Leupold in 3-9x vs 4-12x - seems like Leupolds are pretty good overall optics but can get slightly pricey (any suggestions for models that don't break the bank ~$500)
- Any good reliable vendors with good prices/ service?
Many thanks!

Any input is appreciated (side note, inheritance will give me a Turkish clone M4 and a 17HMR bolt action)

0
u/chillyrabbit Jan 25 '23
Lol, the point of the 2 ID's is you have to compare the picture of the PAL to the secondary ID. But do redact the DL info as they wouldn't need that.
(i) in the case of a transfer that is completed in person, whether in whole or in part, by comparing the photograph on the licence with the person presenting themselves as the transferee, and
(ii) in all other cases,
(A) by using the method set out in paragraph (a), or
(B) if the comparison cannot be undertaken using that method, by comparing the information on the transferee’s licence with that on another piece of photo identification that has been issued by the Government of Canada or a provincial or municipal government; and
EDIT: The RCMP do consider a zoom video call to fall under (A)
The transferor (seller) may ask the buyer to engage in a video call or other means that would allow the transferor (seller) to have confidence that the persons presenting themselves as the transferee (buyer) and the licence the transferee (buyer) presents are the same. Alternatively, if a visual comparison is not possible, the transferor (seller) may ask the buyer to present a second photo ID that is issued at the federal, provincial, or municipal level.

Got this from Tenda Friday on a NR order I put in 2 weeks ago:
Dear valued customer, Due to the 18th OIC change, we now have to obtain a secondary ID to verify the identity of the customer and to make sure the purchaser is the one on ID. Please kindly take a picture of your PAL (Firearm license) and a secondary government issued ID with the address on it (Drivers license). We thank you for your patience and understanding.
New Non Restricted Purchase Procedures at SFRC As many of you know, you now have to send in a picture of your PAL and a secondary piece of photo ID when you purchase a non restricted firearm online. This new rule applies to all non face to face transactions both business and private. Video chats to prove your identity will also be an option
Tomorrow we will be altering our invoices and checkout screens to show how to send in your ID. At this time two options will be available. You can email them or you can text them to us. We will have a text only cell phone at the store for customers to text in their order number and ID. All pictures, sent by email or by text, will be purged at the end of each business day.
We have decided to not put in an automatic upload section in checkout at this time as we feel it will make checkout more difficult for some people.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Ryan
So have you personally purchased from those stores via their online storefront, and not have to produce secondary id? The law says you need secondary id if you can't compare the picture of the person on the PAL to a person in front of you.

I submitted my paper work March 2022 Recivied in Mirimachi: May 5 2022 Cc was charged: July 2022 Final review and license out to print: December 30th Expected delivery as of Jan 26 2023: Early March
And now I've called on January 26, 2023, and was told that the whole CFP will be about 10 weeks behind due to computer issues That means -ATC -Transfers
- new licenses
Will all not be printed or processed until nearly March when they get some errors sorted out
I couldn't find a single post in the sub retaining to the CFP going half offline and when I posted in the main thread wirh my information from the CFP I was met by and overzealous moderater message who said the post was not unique and they have many posts like it.
There was no other posts mentioning most of the CFP shutting down. I'd be careful of the other members and maybe some moderators even. It seems like a liberal attempt to silence our issues and conversations with other PAL holders

Somehow it all ends in the pockets of the rich. Application development, gas pump stickers, WE charity, SNC Lavalin, and the thousands of schemes that were properly disguised.

Anyone applied for a Restricted PAL recently? What’s the time? I already have a non restricted. I just took my restricted safety class last week.

u/yoemo_ Jan 23 '23
I just got my first handgun transferred finally. I’ve heard you should give them a good first clean to remove the excess factory oil. Does anyone have some good recommendation on what products to use and guides they follow?
3
u/Redbeardthacoolio Jan 23 '23
I like using a boresnake and clp. Hoppes makes both of things.
In terms of a guide, I think you want a little bit of oil on the frame rails, and on the slide where those rails ride. Some might call for a tiny bit on the trigger and hammer assemblies (if you have a hammer), but thats about it.

I'm a 20 year old ontarian and I filed my rpal and pal application in April didn't get it until December, too late to own handguns and now all restricted rifles and tactical NR rifles/semis will be banned but they still took my money and time and gave me a useless restricted license. Any advice or ideas? Anybody in a similar situation?
10
u/_Connor Jan 25 '23
I dunno man, write to the government and ask for your $100 back?
Obviously the proposed laws aren't great but even then, calling the license 'useless' is a but hyperbolic.
1
Jan 25 '23
After the c21 ammendment passes the only restricted firearms that Wont be banned or freezed are shotguns I won't even be able to buy tactical semi auto rifles which are also getting banned so I don't think I'm being hyperbolic. The whole reason I got my licenses was to shoot and collect handguns and tactical rifles and do a bit of hunting. It's just not fair. I emailed my mp, medicino, and polievre In early Dec and I just heard from polievre and it was just bullshit talking points and nothing about fixing the freeze and helping people like me. Anyways Thank you for your time commenting.

u/_Connor Jan 25 '23
Your assumption is that Bill C-21 passes, or that it passes in its current form, or that even if it does pass that a future government doesn't repeal it.
-1
Jan 25 '23
I'm a cynic and a skeptic regarding this. The libs have the votes so it will pass its just a question of when. There are barely any examples of conservatives repealing firearms restrictions besides harper scrapping the long gun registry. There may not even be a way for polievre to win The cities are full of dumb library's and immigrants who will vote liberal because they brought them in and with 500000 more immigrants coming that just stacks more votes for them. I hope I'm just a negative and I'm wrong and you're right there's always a chance that polievre campaign Is skilled enough and there's a perfect storm which grants a conservative majority.

Just bought a fx9 that came with a drum mag and extended mags.
I know I can't have more than 10 in them at a time. Do they need to be pinned?
6
u/_Connor Jan 26 '23
Do they need to be pinned?
Are they not pinned already? Did you try loading more than 10 rounds in either of them?
If they're not already pinned then you're in pretty serious violation of the law.

u/Beretta_errata removeddit pro Jan 26 '23
Permanently pinned, Pistol magazines ten rounds, rifle magazines five rounds or they are prohibited devices. Unless they are rimfire, then different rules apply.

would it be possible to learn everything you need for a PAL without dropping the $150-200 for a safety course? i'm just wondering if it's an absolute necessity.
10
u/Scopequest Jan 22 '23
Easy to learn it... But to get a PAL you have to take the course and pass the test. You need that certificate that you took the course and passed the test.

You can download the manual and watch the courses but you are required by law to attend the eight hour course in person and write the test.
2
u/_Connor Jan 23 '23 edited Jan 23 '23
Is it possible to learn everything without the course? Absolutely!
Is the government going to accept your handwriting on a napkin saying 'I know gun' instead of the official course results to process a license for you?
No.
Also no offence, but if the $150 course is a backbreaker for you, this probably isn't the hobby for you. It's incredibly expensive to shoot these days. You're looking at $100 to go shoot 100 rounds of 9mm at a range.

This reply isn't really fair. There is no good reason why they don't let you do the test without the course. In fact they used to. I never did the PAL course but was allowed to challenge the test back in like 2005 or so.

My point is that the snarky reply was unfair. It is reasonable for a newb to ask if he has to do the course.

I had to resend my payment info for my pal twice and I saw it was finally sent through my credit card last week. Is it worth it to call to get my card info or will it only be a few weeks now? already been waiting for over a year for this

What stock and foregrips will fit churchill shotguns? Will Canuck, Remington, moss berg ones fit?
1
u/UnderstandingFirm432 Jan 22 '23
Mossberg Maverick 88 or Canuck Enforcer? Looking for a beginner pump. Enforcer does come with additional stock and grip. Or anything else should I look at approximately $350 or less.
6
u/Bushido_Plan Jan 22 '23
I'd go for the Maverick any day. They're both the same price and about the same quality, but you should get much better serviceability and parts availability with the Maverick over the Enforcer.
If you're a patient person, could see if a Winchester SXP or a Mossberg 500 ever goes on sale, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it. For a $300 pump, Maverick 88 is a great option.

Anyone from Ontario receive their physical card in the mail yet? And how long did it take I’ve been waiting for about 2 weeks.
2
u/Vandee71 Jan 23 '23
My card said issued on Dec 11th. Still waiting. “Printer issues”

Card “issued” Dec 11th. Still waiting. Called and got my number but doesn’t do me much good as I can’t legally have a firearm without the physical card. Anyone in Ontario that got the “issued” notification before me and are still waiting?

Received my first restricted firearm transfer in early December. When should I expect my licence to be revised with that condition to take my guns to the range? I’ve long since received my reg certificate for the firearm.

What do you mean by 'is it safe?' Like what is it you're worried about? Are you worried about theft or about your firearms somehow degrading?
If it's a NR you can literally just put a trigger lock on it and put it under your bed.

Anyone able to get through to the Ontario CFO successfully over the phone the last 2-3 weeks?
I keep getting a voice message to call back later. Calling 20-30x a day to obtain an ATT to move my “prohibited” firearm. I tried online but the website says I don’t have any restricted or prohibited firearms.

People are getting ATTs to move their 2020 OiC firearms. I have heard the best way to contact the Ontario CFO is emailing.

Never sell only buy. Every rifle I've ever sold, I've come to regret months/years down the line.
2
u/RydNightwish Jan 24 '23
This. I sold a buddy of mine a chinese sks years back. He took it apart to put it in a stock, it didnt fit and he never put the sks back together or maintained it at all. Its rusted to shit now. I can only imagine how his svt must be doing.

Hi everyone,
I’m from Calgary…I applied for my PAL/RPAL back in March 30, 2022. It’s been 156 business days and I still haven’t received anything.
I can the 1-800-731-4000 and doesn’t matter which time of the day. It just hangs up.
Is there anything I can do?
2
u/jonnyboomyyc Jan 25 '23
Have you tried checking the status on the RCMP site? I submitted in Aug and I finally saw the approval that it has been issued on the website late last week.
2
u/Legitimate_March_622 Jan 25 '23
For simple inquiry about status call that number and select ext 1040. They usually only have 30-40 mins wait. Also try first the online website

I'm waiting for my pal to show up and I was looking at ruger pc carbines. I'm just curious about how it's non restricted but comes with a 10 round magazine
4
u/black_covfefe_please Jan 25 '23
It is a pistol magazine. The law address what gun a magazine is designed for, not what it is used with.
2
u/Brandothememe Jan 25 '23
So a rifle with a rifle magazine can only have 5 rounds and be non restricted but a rifle with a pistol magazine can have 10 and be non restricted?
2
u/black_covfefe_please Jan 25 '23
🎯 Yes. The trick is finding a NR firearm that is compatible with a pistol magazine.

Hey, apparently my pal was printed and mailed out on the 12th but its the 25th now and it still hasnt shown up. Lady on the phone said to give it 2-4 weeks. Is this considered normal? Getting pretty concerned since over 2 weeks for a card to reach ontario from new brunswick ain’t normal to me.
