Hey all,I've decided to grab a Tikka T3x CTR as my first firearm, based on many great reviews and how it felt in my hands. I'm planning to use this long-term for target shooting and hunting - which it seems like it's well suited to be capable of doing.

I haven't hunted before, but planning on going out maybe next season, so I'd like to purpose-proof my purchase. I've done some research of my own but I would love some advice from experienced folk on the points below!

- 6.5 creedmoor vs .308 win - seems like 6.5 CM has better ballistics and lighter but slightly more expensive per round (does it really make a practical difference?)

- Leupold in 3-9x vs 4-12x - seems like Leupolds are pretty good overall optics but can get slightly pricey (any suggestions for models that don't break the bank ~$500)

- Any good reliable vendors with good prices/ service?

I see... what would you recommend?

Again, I am looking to make this a long term investment so given this new info, I think I can increase my budget a bit more.

Ok, I'll go check out the M18 next time I go to a store.

Maybe AB prices are higher, but VX 5HD seem to run ~1.7k pre-tax in both big-box and local places I've seen so far...

Price of ammo, especially for 6.5 or. 308 is the cost of the hobby. That's why people buy .22s or PCCs for the range so they don't break the bank. I have 6.5 for hunting because I can't use anything larger than .275 calibre in my area. Check where you'll be hunting and if there's any regulations like that.

6.5 CM vs 308win.... Yes 6.5CM has better performance. But, as a new shooter, you will not have the skills to actually use the improved performance. Unless you are wanting to become a long range shooter (eg 1000m),308win may be your best choice. It is lower cost and more widely available. You can even shoot 7.62NATO surplus to save money.

You're right, the .308 win may be better suited for me now.

I doubt I would be shooting anything that far out for a while anyway.

Likely by the time you are able to start trying to shoot that far, you will have several new guns.
