I'm a little broke but have wanted to get my license for years. Given recent events, I'm starting to consider blowing a chunk of my savings getting the licenses and a firearm or two. What are the odds that I'll be able to get the course, the test, the license, 2 firearms, all before C-21 goes through with the amendments? What kind of costs am I looking at here? Is the market still squeezed to fuck? My friend told me SKS's tripled in price. I was hoping to get a Soviet one, since I don't trust Chinese engineering nor quality control. I'm in Quebec, if it's relevant.

Best time to get your license was yesterday. Next best time is today. I don't know about Quebec but if it's like literally any other province, expect months and months of wait time between the time you submit your application and you receiving it. Give or take a few months.

If you're short of money (and not expecting finances to get better) I wouldn't rush out to get a gun, especially if you expect it to get banned.

It's not just the course and gun cost. You need to buy ammo to use it.

It's really dependent on how broke you are and what the future outlook is.

Chinese are fine, some brand new. Total estimate $1500 to $2000

Do it, I got my license last year, the only regret I have is why I didn’t do it sooner.

SKS is around $500-600 for the newest Chinese import that have not been fired and in mint condition. And nothing wrong with Chinese SKS.

Additionally if you can't find Crown land (which I hear can be hard in QC) then you need to pay range fees and likely higher ammo costs as most ranges don't allow steel mil surplus ammo.

Put together a budget of how much shooting will cost you and see how that impacts your current rate of adding to savings.
