Time to zero in on the range.

Well, I am not looking for pity but once again I rolled the dice on a Crusader Arms product...I'm not going to lie I couldn't be happier so far. Yes, same Blah packaging, same 6 doubles end 5rd proprietary magazines...Fit and finish is decent across the board, I didn't expect much different in the way of presentation so my expectations were met in that regard as mediocre. With all of that said, and I know it is still early, but I put 335 rounds in her first range trip and I kid you not, not a single issue, no light strikes, no feeding issues, no mag related problems etc..It just ate every round and ran like a rifle in that class should run. To answer anyones questions in advance, no I don't have money to waste, no I am not a gambler at heart, the truth is, When I bought the original Backland Hunter I read the reviews at the time about the company which were not stellar but at the time there wasn't much as it related to reviews on that rifle and I figured I would give it a try. When I experienced cycling issues I thought to myself I am fu#k3d because the customer service reviews were what everyone complained about. However I was pleasantly surprised with the quick reply I got and they paid shipping both ways for me to send my rifle in for repair. All in all the process took about 3 weeks approx. When I got it back it ran fine, with the odd failure to lock back on the last round which to me was not a big deal and likely was mag related.

When they announced the Backland Hunter COMP, I was slightly annoyed because I had bought the standard Hunter rifle not so many months earlier. Still, I really wanted to be able to use my trigger tech trigger from one of my other guns that has just been sitting in the safe, based on my good last experience with Crusader I figured WTF I'll give it a go. Oh and yes anyone looking for the previous model, I have one that will go on the market shortly lol. Even though I bought the COMP to be able to run my Trigger Tech Trigger, I was not prepared for what I got as a bonus with this version, ALL of the ergonomics are just like my AR, I mean ALL, it feels just like it..yeah yeah I know it isn't, but I challenge anyone who has a chance to get their hands on one to see for yourself. My other Backland handled like a shotgun, feels decent like its the only option we have so deal with it. But this COMP version is WAY different in feel, I know it looks subtle but it feels night and day, that and mine runs like a champ so far. I saw SHOC_DVC on instagram (image is a still from his video) running it hard which I then said screw it and decided to pick it up from Bullseye North. Since, I noticed RDSC has started to stock them as well for you Western folks.

OOPS I DID IT AGAIN and so far I couldn't be happier...However I am only 300+ rounds in, so I will report back when I get more rounds downrange. Hopefully Canada Day bash at a friends farm will be my next go at it, we set aside 1000 rounds of PMC 5.56, hoping for the best ..."please don't be a piece of shit.." hahaha fingers crossed.

Good day. I have tried different ammo brands and weights, but I am getting terrible accuracy out of this rifle. Two shots on top of each other, then a hit 4 or 5 inches away. Then it seems my point of impact changes to that flyer. I cleaned the rifle after and found what looks like steel shavings on the cleaning patch. I have put around 300 rounds through the barrel hopping it was just break in period, but no success. Any advice would be appreciated. All of the screws are tight as well.

How to get the Gungnir chasis for ruger 10/22 in Canada?

Just bought a new pump and went to clean it. Never had a pump before, is this a Crack or is this how its manufactured? Basically is there any worry in shooting this gun as I was planning to go out tomorrow lol.

Planning on keeping this rifle in the family for generations so I got it cerakoted, turned out pretty nice I think. It’s in .30-06 with a Vortex Razor LHT 2-15x42

So far I’ve put 250 rounds through her.
This has happened a few times.

Today at the range I shot 100 rounds and this happened about 4 times.

Using PMC Bronze .357 Mag 158gr. JSP

The other day I picked up a Zastava LK M85 Mini Mauser in 7.62x39. If you saw my previous post about my first thoughts, you'd know I had some apprehensions about the quality of this rifle. Today I put it to the test. Here are the results...

Saturday! We started the day with absolutely zero rain and minimal wind, so I decided that this morning would be a good day to go shooting. I packed up my rifle, a whole pile of ammo, targets, and headed over to my favorite gravel pit.

The ammo I tested the gun with was a mixed bag of S&B and MFS 124 grain FMJ, 120 rounds in total. My choice of optic was a brand new SIG Sauer Buckmasters 3-12x44mm scope paired with Vortex Hunter 1" low mount rings. To make the scope work to its full potential for this field test I had to remove the lever located on the magnification dial; on 12x setting the lever would block the bolt's ability to be fully manipulated. Shortly after my first post about this rifle I decided to lubricate the action as well and work it over hundreds of times to break it in, and it seemed to be much less rough than what it was.

Now for the shooting report...

As with any scope I've sighted in, I started at 25 yards and worked my way back to 150 yards until I found an acceptable level of accuracy. From there, I started burning through rounds.

8"x8" plates, paper targets, bouncing targets, I brought everything out for this test. I found at 150 yards I was getting consistent 1 1/2" to 2" groups on paper with both MFS and S&B ammo, which was much tighter groups than I initially expected. From there, I moved to the steel plates and bouncing targets and could hit them consistently. A few times during shooting I would try to get through as many rounds as possible within a minute or so timeframe, a few times I would take my time with steady shots. No matter how I shot I still managed tight, consistent groups. The barrel did get hot, but not hot enough to burn your hand on I found. No test can be done without attempting to make the barrel hot at least once to see how accuracy holds!

One thing that I'm glad I did before going out is breaking in the action. The morning was made much easier thanks to sitting down for an hour and working the bolt repeatedly! But there is still one problem with the bolt, and that is in its size. The bolt handle itself is quite small, but once you're used to the rifle, it's more so of a quirk you just have to learn to work with rather than a hindrance to operation of the rifle. Speaking of which, with the Magwedge rail and low mount rings, the Buckmasters scope has just enough height to be low enough to the bore, and high enough to allow bolt manipulation. After firing, the bolt does still feel a little stiff though- that isn't attributed to the machining, that would be attributed to the bolt's cock on open design. Nothing that you can't learn to work with. Ejection was all over the place, but I could attribute that to how I was working the bolt at times; some empty shells would barely leave the chamber, others would launch a good 4 feet from the rifle.

As for the trigger, I found it acceptable. Allegedly, the trigger is adjustable to about 3 lbs or so but I left it as is for the test. The trigger does have minimal creep and a crisp break, but I probably could adjust it to have a lighter pull. At one point allegedly Timney made aftermarket triggers that do fit the Mini Mauser, so it might be something I'll have to look into.

Finally, the magazine. Like many old school rifles the magazine is an internal, hinged floor plate design. The 7.62x39 model of the Mini Mauser holds 4 rounds, despite being advertised as having a 5 round capacity. I had no issues with loading the magazine and no issues with feeding. A plus side to this magazine design is there's absolutely no detachable magazine to potentially lose or misplace!

Final thoughts...

Overall, despite my first impressions with Zastava's Mini Mauser I do have to give it a passing grade. As a previous owner of a few different flavours of SKS I was a little apprehensive about an intermediate caliber bolt gun- being so used to the idea of just magdumping at a target I never really considered a bolt gun in the same caliber- to me, bolt guns always seemed right in rimfire or full size/magnum options. Not anymore! I can safely say this is a rifle that'll be a regular shooter for me.

When I've invited people over to shoot at my range, we used to spend too much time picking up shotgun hulls and any brass larger than 22LR. The last couple of sessions, I've put a nice heavy 10'x10' tarp on the ground at our most used distance. We put my Caldwell portable table on it or stand on it while shooting. 99% of the brass stays on the tarp. At the end of the session we either lift the corners and then scoop it into a bucket from the centre, or we just fold the tarp and deal with it when back home.

I'd definitely use this method if I was shooting on public land too. Maybe we could start a trend and most people would do this so that there'd be less mess left behind. Just a thought.

Both of these guns are inexpensive and take 10/22 magazines. The Adler has a nice short barrel and has been around for longer while the Kral is cheaper but is very new. The Adler can also take milspec stocks too. I know both are polymer and Turkish, QC can be hit or miss. Both are cool guns in their own way.

Have a nice bonus coming from work in the next couple weeks, want to buy a polymer "tactical" lever like a S&W Stealth Hunter in .357/.38.

This is going to be a firearm I'm going to want to build up (skeletonized stock, cartridge quiver, light, optic, etc).

Looking for options on a good base rifle to start with. The S&W is great obviously but I'm looking at $2k for just the rifle plus extras. Want to consider my options for good base rifles to start with that have good aftermarket support.

Need a little fine tuning on the red dot but overall, such a sweet gun!

The review I made is now live. I really like the Supreme. It's one of those guns that I don't even consider a cope gun because I would still be interested if we had all semi-autos.

I got a new gong target from princes auto for 18$ it was a great deal but the first shot was abit high to the left. Shot from 200m with .223 you can see the brass on what’s left of the stand. Anyone else have similar luck or lack thereof?

Saw this seemingly Canadian made .22 on Western Metal. Takes 10/22 mags. Can't find any I found or reviews, was wondering if anyone has any experience with these Northernrim Rifles. Seems like a too good to be true price for a domestic.

Ever since the bans started coming down 6 years ago, people were saying "buy so and before it's banned", as they (correctly) speculated that May 2020 was just the first step of many, and progressively the most scary unbanned gun would get added to the list until none are left.

What's the point though?

I don't understand the idea of buying a gun while you still can (currently the SKS), just to get ahead of the ban, use it for a while, then be stuck with it. Seems like you're paying an inflated price, to enjoy it for maybe a year, but then be stuck with it.

Although I don't have any, my friends have some of the banned rifles and they've just become white elephants. Can't do anything with them, tying up capital, can't sell, can't use, but, still have to store and have all the legal downside in case anything goes wrong.

So what's the logic of trying to buy something ahead of it being banned? Either it gets banned and you can never use it, or it doesn't and there's no issue picking it up in the future.

I'm looking at a rifle listed on Western Metal that I want. The cost is less than other sites and it's in stock. I can also pick it up local at Straight Shooters to save shipping.

What are your thoughts/experiences with obtaining firearms from them?

I signed up for my range safety course today and completely bombed it.

I acts/proved fine enough but when it came time to test with a pistol for the life of me I could not reload it. My hands got excessively sweaty and pulling back the slide was near impossible for me no matter how many times I wiped my hands.

Eventually nerves got to me and derailed my whole progression were I started to make mistakes on fundamentals like acts/proves, maintaining trigger discipline and not following procedure, and this was just in the classroom with a denatured pistol and dummy ammo.

Even with wiping my hands over and over again, on the range it was more of the same which resulted in me not passing the test. By the end I believe I was even trembling due to my nerves.

Of course not passing is a good thing in terms of safety, you wouldn’t want someone unsure of themselves handling something so dangerous. However how does one get better at this?

It is prohibitively expensive to go to a range as a non member and shoot, and even then when you, the parts that I failed at the most like actually reloading/acts and proves are already done for you, which teaches you nothing in terms of what to do.

I’ve always been a fairly nervous guy and am prone to excessive hand sweat. Honestly when playing video games with a controller, I wear gloves as my hands tend to profusely sweat.

This is a hobby I hoped to get into and I have already spent a decent amount of money + time invested into it however it seems like there is not really an avenue to get better at this. I contemplated practicing with a bb but it doesn’t feel anything like the real one, with the real glock I was using being much tighter and harder to get the slide to lock.

Not really sure what things I should focus on and how I can combat it. It could be my finger/ hand strength, nerves, sweaty hands of a combination of everything.

I feel really bummed out, like something is fundamentally wrong with me. Hell, even young children were doing it successfully on the range, while I, a full blown adult was not.

I'm looking for see through scope mount rings for my .223 bolt action with Picatinny rail system so I can mount my Bushnell scope but also use the iron sights for anything really close- under 25 yards. Any suggestions or recommendations?

I was wandering around youtube when I came across a SmallArmsSolutions review for this particular platform. Somewhat interestingly, it seems mostly C-21 compliant? It has a proprietary 5 round magazine and seems to be extended to work with their proprietary BC-8 uppers, so it's not AR-10 compatible. Thoughts on whether or not this would actually be legal to import into Canada? I suspect it might be caught on being an "AR Variant" but it'd be interesting to hear all of your thoughts.

Anybody in-the-know know if we're gonna be getting the Ruger American Gen 2 Scout in 5.56 in Canada this year?
