News / Politics / Activism "Get it before it's banned!"

Ever since the bans started coming down 6 years ago, people were saying "buy so and before it's banned", as they (correctly) speculated that May 2020 was just the first step of many, and progressively the most scary unbanned gun would get added to the list until none are left.

What's the point though?

I don't understand the idea of buying a gun while you still can (currently the SKS), just to get ahead of the ban, use it for a while, then be stuck with it. Seems like you're paying an inflated price, to enjoy it for maybe a year, but then be stuck with it.

Although I don't have any, my friends have some of the banned rifles and they've just become white elephants. Can't do anything with them, tying up capital, can't sell, can't use, but, still have to store and have all the legal downside in case anything goes wrong.

So what's the logic of trying to buy something ahead of it being banned? Either it gets banned and you can never use it, or it doesn't and there's no issue picking it up in the future.

It’s like meeting a hot, crazy woman. You just enjoy your time together knowing damn well it’s going to end in a dumpster fire shortly. Live in the now. Haha.

It’s almost like the bans are pointless and don’t stop the violence just keeps citizens from having the best available option to protect themselves. All so some white woman can feel better about herself.

-35

u/Livid_sumo Jun 28 '26

Bro you arnt buying guns to protect yourself..... otherwise you are the problem

16

u/Educational_Sink_438 Jun 28 '26

In an ideal world honest citizens would have more protections than the criminals who just want to do them harm, so you could defend yourself if they break in

We do not live in an ideal world

32

u/Spread-Hour Jun 28 '26

You sound like you leave your keys by the front door

-5

u/exclamationmarksonly Jun 28 '26

This is a childish comment! He is right your PRIMARY reason for buying guns should not be home defence! People who come on here and spout of about home defence just make the gun ban people's arguments easier and make the community look unhinged and paranoid! That said buy guns for whatever LEGAL reason you want but the "I need guns for home defence" people need to shut the fuck up in public forums they are just helping the gun grabbers! Do you really think the anti gun lobbyists don't come to subs like this and all around the internet looking for morons to prove their point for them and give them talking points!

-15

u/Livid_sumo Jun 28 '26

You sound like you are scared of an event that is extremely unlikely. You know you are allowed to use equal force to defend yourself right.... you just need to be reasonable, which would require you to keep a level head in any situation.

If somebody showed up to your house with a gun intent on harming you, and you go get your firearm (as equal force). You could use it to verbally challenge them (just like the police are required to do) which would likely satisfy the reverse onus situation you would end up in if they shot.

The situation i think you are imagining is where you cowar in the dark and shoot the assailant first... the reality is even if the police did that they would be charged with manslaughter.

The reason we dont allow such thing in canada is to prevent people from shooting their children and relatives when they come home late, or sneak into the house.

I would wager to say the american still have the shittiest stats when it comes to firearms and should not really be an example to follow.

6

u/houstonman526 Jun 28 '26

Bro I’m fucking American it’s our religion , damn right we buy them to protect ourselves here. What else would I be using them for?

2

u/Amazing_Pudding1896 Jun 28 '26

shoot a paper target because it's fun...?

-13

u/Livid_sumo Jun 28 '26

Classic american. You are the only country in the world with gun rights baked into your constitution, and you have the most shootings...

There are plenty of healthy nations to take examples from that arnt your dumpster fire of a constitution. (Example: switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, etc.)

6

u/houstonman526 Jun 29 '26

Sure Jan , the thing is yall keep saying this shit but per capita you are wrong and banning guns doesn’t stop shit . Having a gun will make them think or at least stop once you shoot them 3-4 times.

-5

u/Livid_sumo Jun 29 '26

Just sounds like you are scared

4

u/houstonman526 Jun 29 '26

Scared of what I have a shitload of guns?

5

u/CyberEd-ca Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

The Czech Republic has the right to bear arms right in their constitution.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_to_keep_and_bear_arms

Also, where do you think the Americans got the idea? We used to be the same country. Have you never heard of the 1689 Bill of Rights? Why do you think Charles I lost his head and his second son James II was deposed?

Open a book some time. What an embarrassment for us all.

-1

u/Livid_sumo Jun 29 '26

Constitutionally still not the same as the US in practice. But you must be over the moon ChatGPT exsist to make you feel smarter.

You are the same guy that opens the criminal code read a section and doesnt read further to the annotation to know how that law is used in practice.

I don't know why you got downvoted! You are right! Your PRIMARY reason for buying guns should not be home defence!People who come on here and spout off about home defence just make the gun ban people's arguments easier and make the community look paranoid and unhinged! That said buy guns for whatever Legal reason but can the "I need my guns for home defence" people shut the fuck up in public forums as they are just helping the gun grabbers! You (people in general) don't think anti gun people wander in here to help support their argument!

u/Motor_Historian2634 Jul 14 '26

So If someone breaks into your house with intent to hurt you, youre just gonna let them kill you because a bunch of cucks who walk around with armed security told you that you arent allowed to defend yourself?

120

u/Relevant_Diver_3228 Jun 27 '26

It's better to have it and be able to use it if you need to then to not have it and need to use it

6

u/Trilobyte83 Jun 27 '26

That’s part of the issue. Guns weren’t banned on function, but appearance. So for the same reason it’s stupid, it easily worked around if your true concern is function.

If you want to fire 5.56 lead down range in a semi automatic fashion when SHTF, does it particularly matter from my/your perspective if it’s coming from a banned weapon or a functionally equivalent gun? Especially if that latter one won’t cost you 20k in legal fees, a criminal record, and perhaps a life time ban on owning guns?

16

u/yolo_swagdaddy Jun 28 '26

If SHTF everything becomes NR…

-54

u/LeVieuxLoup Jun 27 '26

But you can't use it if it's banned. So what's the point?

51

u/burntlandboi Jun 27 '26

Nobody is going to say but think on it.

6

u/Trilobyte83 Jun 27 '26

Obviously there are “options”, but having seen someone go through a relatively benign unsafe storage charge and the disaster that entailed, the process being the punishment, I can only imagine how scorched earth your life and finances would be following getting caught plinking with a prohibited weapon.

32

u/OrdinaryDude2025 Jun 27 '26

I think you’re missing the point all together.

28

u/HankHippoppopalous Jun 27 '26

Its not banned if the government collapses.

13

u/HungryFollowing8909 Jun 27 '26

That's my single wish every day.

-14

u/dsac Jun 27 '26

The government collapsing would result in tens, if not hundreds of thousands of deaths. Why would you wish for that?

15

u/DumbFuckingUsername Jun 27 '26

Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down and beat you with experience.

Also, a wise man never wishes for violence or to use weapons, but uses them as a last resort, with reluctance. Don't wish for the day, but don't be caught unprepared.

8

u/HungryFollowing8909 Jun 28 '26

Good thing I don't advocate for violence, only for the dismantling of bloated government systems and freedom of the people.

2

u/DumbFuckingUsername Jun 28 '26

I think a collapsed government will result in a lot of violence, but who knows. History probably shows that's what happens though.

I had this typed up and then was going to delete it, but maybe someone will read it and change their mind or agree:

I'm all for freedom of the people, and for a less bloated government. Although I don't think a thinner govt alone will solve things. I'm my opinion, the current issue is deeper than that and stems from our capitalist roots. Money is too great of a driving factor, and greed is too strong of a human desire. As long as the people in power stand to benefit from choosing things that are better for companies, rich oligarchs and foreign interests rather then choosing decisions that are good for the people, we will never see the true improvements that we both know the people deserve.

The only way to solve the problem is to get a new government in power that doesn't support the rich business interests and instead supports the people. The only way to do that is to completely change our (essentially) two party system so that new blood can come in and change the game.

2

u/canadianmohawk1 Jun 29 '26

So basically, collapse is your only hope because what you wrote is extremely unlikely to happen given that we've moved to a two party system from having more previously. Ie: it's getting worse, not better. History probably shows what will happen though.........and perhaps your wish isn't so different than theirs after all.

2

u/DumbFuckingUsername Jun 29 '26

No I'm fully aware of how unlikely it is. Trudeau's promise of electrical reform got shot down by him or his party by confusing the public or whatever their excuse was.

Proportional representation is the only way.

If collapse is the next best alternative, then so be it. We can all band together for an "I told you so" and reap the benefits of being prepared regardless.

Honestly, is rather the bandaid is ripped off rather than slowly peeled back like it is being currently, it feels like death by 1000 cuts to try and bleed the people dry. Just let it collapse and face the music. Not my wish, but an unfortunate reality in the late capitalist nightmare the world has fallen into.

Or we vote in a sensible politician to do what's actually good for the Canadian people...extremely unlikely...what party would they even run under?

→ More replies (0)

3

u/HankHippoppopalous Jun 28 '26

Wait. I’m curious as to how you think that would happen.

3

u/HungryFollowing8909 Jun 28 '26

A society where possibly hundreds of thousands of lives hang onto the government doesn't sound like a healthy society

0

u/4r4nd0mninj4 Jun 28 '26

We have more than one party in Canada to step in and fix things when the current one fails. 🤷‍♂️

3

u/canadianmohawk1 Jun 29 '26

Lol ... You're new here I see. The current one has been failing for going on 12 years now.

-10

u/dsac Jun 27 '26

u/Remarkable_Vanilla34 Jun 27 '26

The biggest reason is its a political statement.

I will gladly waste my money just so the LPC and Polysesouvient have to contend with the fact that these rifles are still being sold and a large unknown number are in circulation.

For all the tough talk, the LPC has a massive problem on their hands. There is not ever going to be an end to the amnesty because they don't have the political capital, resources, money or even a plan to confiscate the 2+ million firearms that are now prohibited in Canada. Even with out compensation its going to cost billions and that only grows if they have to ban the SKS.

The other reason is FOMO. Everyday someone make a comment on here about how they missed the handgun ban and regret it. I can almost guarantee that the SKS is not getting banned, the sale and import of it might. Even the media acknowledges the popularity and number of these guns and they have generally followed the LPCs bullshit numbers since 2020.

Lastly, its not getting banned, people are freaking out about it, but they have been trying for years and theres just no political will. Beyond Polysesouvient I don't see anyone demanding it. Progressive are worried about misogynistic violence and mental health, actual issues, and i haven't seen guns mentioned in the media except for Poly throwing their bi annual baby fit.

Also, if your a Canadian gun owner you shoukd have an SKS, its that simple. Its part of Canada's culture and identity, whether the Laurentian Elite agree with that or not.

Buy an SKS.

5

u/Cope180-Enjoyer Jun 27 '26

Its like "hurry up guy". You had time.

6

u/Xyzzics Jun 28 '26

My only problem with this statement is the use of e singular “an SKS”.

There is no reasonable take to limit yourself to only one.

They used to sell them by the crate.

Don’t let your dreams be dreams.

1

u/Remarkable_Vanilla34 Jun 28 '26

Thats a good point.

5

u/YYZYYC Jun 28 '26

They can’t even get the buy back and ban of ar-15s done ….there are like 10x the number of SKSs out there and they don’t know who has them and how many. Banning SKS is not happening

-2

u/Goliad1990 Jun 27 '26

Lastly, its not getting banned

It is absolutely getting banned. It does not survive the the next gun control bill/"classification review".

That's not a reason not to buy one though.

12

u/Remarkable_Vanilla34 Jun 27 '26

I think at most it gets band for sale and import.

I know the LPC and Polysesouvient like to pretend they have the ability to send judge dredd out to confiscate these guns and will throw everyone in jail but they just don't. Our system is compliance based, not enforcement based and it will fall apart very quickly when they show their hand and people realize the consequences of non compliance are minimal.

The "solution" to all of this in the end with be indefinite amnesty, grand fathering or some other bullshit where the LPC can claim victory, appease Polysesouvient (if thats even possible) and save face. It will be far from ideal but I'm pretty skeptical that they are going to keep banning guns when they can't collect them or show results for it.

I know that hard to believe with the LPC because they historically can't let this go and have doubled down over and over for 35 years, but i do think this was always political grand standing and they create a mess for themselves that they will find away out of and it likely won't mean making criminals out of 2.5 million people. They had an opportunity in 2020, they fucked it up and the window has passed.

I just don't have faith that our government is capable of something as expensive, resource intensive, logistically and politically complicated as this. Lol seeing Carney respond to the media the other day, and polys hissy fits the last few weeks, I think the writing is on the wall. 6 years ago that Montreal shooting would have captured the headlines with calls for bans and confiscation and diffinitive bold promises from the LPC. Instead we got a lack luster response from the government, a few angery zealots in Montreal throwing a fit, and the media giving the CCFR and other people actual opportunity to speak on the issue, with most of the discussion and debate surrounding ideology and how to deal with it.

Or I'm wrong and there will be a lot of comm bloc iron buried in peoples back yards lol.

6

u/Xyzzics Jun 28 '26

I would never advocate such a thing but I will provide the free information that cosmoline, a vacuum sealer and pvc pipe are plentiful, legal, and when combined lend themselves well to being buried for long periods of time.

45

u/boozefiend3000 Jun 27 '26

You never know what happens in the future. Maybe they get unbanned for use but not to buy, maybe they get totally unbanned and the price skyrockets. Would still rather have it than not

6

u/shearedgearsets Jun 27 '26

Maybe they get unbanned

has there ever been an example of something moving from prohibited to (at least restricted)? Or restricted to non-restricted?

I can think of Swissarms rifles and VZ58 (?). But that's it.

26

u/Plasma_48 Jun 27 '26

I think its more about the possibility of the government giving current prohib owners a condition allowing them to use their prohibs again, kind of like how they did handguns.

6

u/Cope180-Enjoyer Jun 27 '26

The would require a registry which nobody is going to do.

Liberals don't know how to properly grandfather things.

6

u/Remarkable_Vanilla34 Jun 27 '26

It could require a registration. Or they just stop imports and sales (which they already have done for thousands of models) call it a political win and the guns that are in the country are in the country. Call it a win and move on. Lol according to the LPC they are currently collecting half of these guns this summer 😆

They could give people who had a license before oic 1, 2 or 3 a prohibited condition on their license. If you had a license before 2020 you can own this, 2024/25 this.

They could just ban them and extend the amnesty indefinitely (most likely will be the oit come even if the CCFR loses) and until we get a different government we will still have them.

5

u/Cope180-Enjoyer Jun 27 '26

The more the libs erode trust, the less PAL holders follow the "rules". That is the damn problem is this country, we can never set precedent. Stop lingering loopholes and ever evolving changes based on NO FACTS.

All pal holders with only NRs should just let their PAL expire until the rules are fair again. No 80mil a year would be coming in for the government and maybe they will change their minds. Fuck liberals.

3

u/Remarkable_Vanilla34 Jun 27 '26

3

u/Cope180-Enjoyer Jun 27 '26

20

u/boozefiend3000 Jun 27 '26

Swiss arms and the vz58 are one. Pierre Trudeau made the AR15 restricted and Joe Clark made it non restricted again when he formed government.

People forget about the handgun “freeze”

Literally who knows what could happen with rifles, possibly something similar

18

u/Kridane Jun 27 '26

Have you ever needed the police? They don’t come right away, if at all. Especially if you are rural

40

u/FireteamOrcale Jun 27 '26

There is the thought that if we are able to get a majority conservative government that some of the OIC bans can be reversed, even with the Supreme Court hearing coming up ruling if the OIC are legit way of being able to ban rifles can make these rifles legal again (although with a majority liberal government they can go through the house and ban them again)

2

u/Significant7971 Jun 27 '26

That was the same thought under Harper’s majority.

An honest rewrite of the Firearms Act with guns classified by real world characteristics not the arbitrary bans under the previous Liberal government.

Instead he got rid of the long gun registry and told us to pound sand.

Nothing will change next time they get a majority.

42

u/Thegiant98 Jun 27 '26

Unregistered firearms are Unregistered. Do with this information what you will.

18

u/Barabarabbit Jun 27 '26

I really wanted a Ruger PC9. Shot one a few times, thought would be really fun at the range.

Didn’t buy one because I knew that Trudeau would ban it.

Wish I had of bought one, if I had a Time Machine would go back and get one.

So that’s my two cents. Buy what you want, don’t turn anything in.

Because mass civil disobedience is still an effective tactic against unjust laws.

28

11

u/burntlandboi Jun 27 '26

Just like books the banned ones are the most fun.

10

u/Jester54 Jun 27 '26

Who is going to stop me from using it?

11

u/rastamasta45 Jun 27 '26

A lot of people are already telling to you to think long and hard why this is the case so I won’t get into the if you know you know part.

However I’ll comment on the sheer economics of it, guns never go down in price and only get harder to find year over year. We don’t know what the future holds, but I can guarantee you in the event this all gets reversed from a better government. You will not be able to obtain the previous stuff without paying a premium.

Guns like the Famae, B&T and BREN were limited pre ban. The TAR21 isn’t even made anymore. So even if they are legal again, you won’t find them, and when you do massive price shocks. Buy while you can also means “while you can afford”

Exactly. This garbage needs stopped Hard Line. Some of us need tools for humane dispatch on farms, traplines, rural daily. A hammer or big rock, or knife aren’t ideal and I would challenge any of these bill supporters to come help when there is a problem.

Reality check please.

5

u/Cope180-Enjoyer Jun 27 '26

and you can never use it.

That's if everyone is complying with "the rules". If "the rules" keep changing then how can you follow them. The social contract is dead. There is/has not been anything that has justified making the rules any different. What if you didn't have a smartphone or PC? How would you know?

The RULE with NR firearms is that they are unregistered. Why do you think there was always a NR tax?

OICs are designed for banning DIY ray-guns, not mechanisms that have been around for 300 years.

6

u/Goliad1990 Jun 27 '26

Seems like you're paying an inflated price, to enjoy it for maybe a year, but then be stuck with it.

Always but items before they get banned as you will never be able to buy them again

You can always work make more money but you cant replace a banned firearm

Worry about using them later

If a tree falls in the woods and noone is around to hear it does it make a sound ?

u/Trilobyte83 Jun 28 '26

From the same line of thought as “who’s going to stop you from using a banned firearm”.

Who’s going to stop you from buying a banned firearm?

Hypothetically, if someone is just going to ignore the ban and shoot anyways, why wouldn’t they just ignore the ban and buy and sell banned guns?

That’s where I get confused. If you’re someone who’s going to completely ignore the laws then the ban doesn’t matter.

There’s at least a strong implication that ppl just shoot illegally. And have no respect of the law or fear of consequences. So the ban changes nothing then, as there’s nothing from stoping ppl from buying/selling or shooting.

It seems like the only reason to be upset at the ban is if you’re planning on operating within legal framework.

Politicians never act within the law. Trudeau has proven over and over that corrupt Liberals are above the law, at all times, and with any criminal or other nefarious acts, Ban the Liberals/Poly and their Criminal party ideology

u/Mysterious_Sleep7443 Jun 28 '26

I have never heard from anyone that they were glad they DIDNT buy more handguns LMFAO

PS, if you dont have a pre order in for a Makasi or Carmel you are doing something wrong in life

u/saulgoodman147 Jun 28 '26

Gotta wanna own land in your future and you kinda had to hop on the wagon in 2018 or so, can’t fathom paying 1,200+ for a normal SKS

2

u/snakeleather45 Jun 28 '26

This is what I like to call a tourist mind set. You see firearms as a hobby, others don't. We are not the same.

2

u/bumsaxk Jun 28 '26

Might need it

-3

u/Trilobyte83 Jun 28 '26

In what conceivable situation would you absolutely need a scary looking semi auto, where a similar, but non-scary looking, non-banned, *functionally identical* semi auto, that won't potentially get you a life time ban on owning guns, just won't do?

That's where my head is.

I'm not saying you shouldn't have it, or the siren song of gun control "why do you need it!!!" but rather asking, since the arguments like "better to have it and not need it", boil down to an argument on function - and as we're all obviously aware, this ban had nothing to do with function - which is why gun ban advocates say it's stupid (easy to get around), and while gun advocates also say it's stupid (what's the point?).

So to say "in case I need it" as an argument falls flat.

I also don't get the animosity here. "Fudd!" "Tourist!" "If you don't know, you'll never get it!". It seems like the firearms community is maligned as it is, seems silly to attack someone who is wholly on the side of more firearms rights, but isn't willing to gamble my entire livelihood and a firearms criminal record so I can plink with a particular rifle vs a functionally identical one in a different colour.

u/JaxIsLoud Jun 29 '26

The SKS will never be banned and if it is then bans don't matter anymore Imma do what I want in the woods.

If you don't have any and don't wanna get any cause your worried about "tying up capital" your probably in the wrong sub lol when I buy anything I'm not thinking about getting my money back when I sell it.

2

u/New-Entrance7841 Jun 29 '26

Banning everything will just make people not caring

3

u/mischling2543 Jun 27 '26

The people advocating this usually just still shoot it illegally out in the bush and/or they're preppers anticipating the end of the world. Personally I have no interest in the Makasi/IWI because I think both are ridiculous reasons to spend $2500.

It sucks that the main responses are either "to own the liberals" or "just commit crimes"

Why are we promoting crimes when we are trying to prove that legal gun owners should be trusted with these?

Shit like this doesn't help us

8

u/IcySkyDream Jun 27 '26

Civil disobedience is the only option we have, because our democracy is a farce.

2

u/mr_hog232323 Jun 27 '26

I feel like if it was we wouldn't have these guns in the first place.

If the government really hated our guts they could just say "every gun we dont like is now illegal to own and we will search the home of every registered gun owner to seize them." It would be a lot cheaper and more effective than a buyback program.

The current approach is a stupid waste of time and and doesn't achive anything for anti gun people and pro gun people.

Acting like Neanderthals is just going to make the anti gun Neanderthals less trusting of us and they are currently the ones in power.

Rest assured this will probably all be reversed the moment the cons get back in, only difference will be higher prices and bullshit in Quebec. No need to make asses of ourselves.

u/Dependent_Border7961 Jun 28 '26

IF the cons ever get back in. Not when, if.

I mean the other option is to bend over, which im not gonna do. We are already being too nice as it is. In most places the people would of tore their country right to the ground if the same thing were to happen to them. people in North America and europe are too comfortable to do anything about it and that has to end if we want results.

-1

u/dsac Jun 27 '26

"Only criminals use illegal guns. I'm not a criminal, so my options to own whatever guns I want shouldn't be limited."

"I don't care if the government says I can't have this gun, I'm keeping it/buying it and not registering it"

I guess that makes them right - only criminals use illegal guns

1

u/DistiIIer Jun 28 '26

Because if it's non restricted when you buy it and then it gets prohibited, there's no way to prove you have it or should have it. Like a restricted going to prohibited

1

u/YYZYYC Jun 28 '26

Wel there is the obvious huge differences between a banned non restricted and a banned restricted.

1

u/InitiativeStill2457 Jun 28 '26

“You can never use it…” yeah right.

Not really doing the Canada Gun ownership thing right if you don't have a dozen safe queens at this point.

1

u/CheesecakeEasy8952 Jul 03 '26

The Grave Dancers have SKS in there Chant!

-4

u/Vahuo89 Jun 27 '26

There's no logic because with money being as tight as it is right now, buying any kind of firearm is not a good idea.

Shit is too volatile in regards to guns in Canada (especially with the shooting in Montreal).

Ya. I had afew from wholesale sports. Honestly I ran so many crates through them the barrels were pitted and black. I rather get my 10k cheuqe and toss it into my TSFA or toss it into my next down-payment on a rental. It is what it is. One had a cracked stock aswell lol. They all got approved for the full ammount regardless of condition. It took 4 hrs from drop off to receipt notice.
