Easy cleanup method at my outdoor range

When I've invited people over to shoot at my range, we used to spend too much time picking up shotgun hulls and any brass larger than 22LR. The last couple of sessions, I've put a nice heavy 10'x10' tarp on the ground at our most used distance. We put my Caldwell portable table on it or stand on it while shooting. 99% of the brass stays on the tarp. At the end of the session we either lift the corners and then scoop it into a bucket from the centre, or we just fold the tarp and deal with it when back home.

I'd definitely use this method if I was shooting on public land too. Maybe we could start a trend and most people would do this so that there'd be less mess left behind. Just a thought.

When I shot steel challenge and falling steel years ago we always used to have tarps under the shooting boxes.  Made picking brass much easier.

For anything magnetic (like cheap hulls used in clay shooting) I’ve found a telescoping magnet pretty nice. Can easily grab 7-8 hulls at a time and drop them in the nearest bin. Won’t work for actual brass of course but if you’re doing a day of clays it’s pretty effective, at least with any of the shells I use (challenger target loads and maionchi AZ-20s)

Moving blanket might be better, could always get some anti slip stuff under whatever you use as well

At our range we have some fine mesh netting. Not sure where to get them. They are more fine than fishnet

Yeah, it feels a bit odd. Not too bad under dry conditions. Wet conditions could be bad.

I actually put my tarp to the right of the bench or prone position so I never walk on the tarp. Brass just ejections on to it

Canvas tarp, it's heavier and doesn't catch on your feet as much. If your on dirt use tent pegs to hold down the corners.

We do a shooting event for my work every year where we doing a bunch of different shooting events including clays. We go through 2 thousand or so shotshells. We put down two tarps and 99% of the shells end up on the tarps, cleanup is quick.

Caldwell has a nice big net for not too much. I've used it if I'm going to be in the same spot for a while. It can go on a table, or tripod. Usually I just set it on the table and put something heavy on the base, like a sandbag.

For some of my more used stuff, I have rail mounted ones. For the stuff I keep to reload it's really nice. But even stuff like 22 that I'd just toss in the brass bucket, it's nice to be able to just dump the net and not have to sweep it all up.

If you have room on a pic rail for your 22 they make a mesh basket that mounts and catches them as they shoot. Work pretty good

Cv life has a good basket one, and a floppy one. Basket works better for all calibres but isn’t as compact as the floppy one.
