PAL/RPAL got issued bit faster than expected. I'm in Ontario.
May 7-8 - CFSC/CRFSC course
June 15 (or so) - Received results
July 11 - Received by RCMP
Sept 21 - CC charged
Sept 29 - Checked IWS for the first time, says: "Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canadian Firearms Program Toll Free number"

So something super weird just happened. I bought a handgun yesterday in Ontario and I just got the confirmation that the transfer was completed
I have 5 other handguns waiting since June so I am at a total loss how this one was done same day. Ref number 604XXXX

Congrats. If you haven't been bookmarking sites already, you can flip through the sponsors/vendors/ads on Arsenal Force, Gunpost, and CanadianGunNutz. There seems to be a fair amount of handguns currently available. Not as broad a selection, perhaps, but still some awesome handguns.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED ...
Y'all, I just got my license. I can't believe it. This started in March with my RPAL/PAL course. What a gauntlet (and not even as bad as others).
I have a unique case because I managed to screw up a reference phone number, but here are my specs for comparison/reference:
• BC Resident.• Received by RCMP 3-30.
• Reviewed by RCMP 6-24, phone number error found, letter sent instructing me to revise.
• Revised Application received by RCMP 7-7 (per Canada Post, *not reflected in my online record).
• Nothing happens for months, I start calling.
• Sept 15 I miraculously get a human on the phone, he corrects the # and it's immediately approved. What.
• Sept 27 card received.
I also just got my GC ID# so I guess it's off to the internet?!
Still in a bit of shock it finally happened.

Very close to the same time from approval to receiving as me. Good to hear for other people waiting.I don't know if you're looking to get a handgun, but Ellwood Epps still has CZ P-09s (they get great reviews). I literally just ordered one, finger's crossed the paperwork goes through before the ban. I was also going to pickup a Canik TP9-SF but they literally sold out while I was looking around. For the past at least week they had 10+ and then BAM, sold out. Wild.

Damn I'm still waiting and they recieved my first application March 23 with a reference date error(wrong year) and I resent almost exactly at the same time as you and nothing has changed. I haven't been able to get through to RCMP as I sit on hold for about half an hour then get a "were experiencing a computer error" and the call ends. Tried calling many many times. Same result. So I've just been waiting and checking all the time. I called the CFO over a month ago and she said it seems it's still in their hands yet. I'm in MB

Wife and I finally got our CC's charged for our RPAL applications! Super thrilled that we're (hopefully..) just a number of weeks away now from getting the physical cards.

FINAL BC TIMELINE (non-restricted):
Sent application June 9th
Received June 14th
CC Charge/ Initial process August 30th
PAL issued September 2nd
-PAL DELIVERED September 20th (slower than usual, because of 2 long weekends in a row)

Just regular PAL, not RPAL? Also in BC, they received my RPAL application May 24th, CC was charged August 15th, since then status still just says "We have completed the initial review of your firearms licence application." Wondering what the hell is taking so long.

Seems like transfer approvals have been speeding up lately, even for Ontario, according to CGN. Over 4,000 went through last Saturday. At first my august purchases were estimated to take a year and now it’s January or February. Still far less than ideal but love to see it.

I just had two transfers approved over the phone. I was on hold for about 5 minutes while she processed them and the registration certificate numbers ended up being 25 apart from each other. That would appear to mean that within a less-than-five-minute window, at least 25 transfers were processed across the country.

I got fed up after 8 weeks, phone the local number, got 2 transfers approved one phone call, and phoned at 830 this morning and got 4 more approved, the lady was more then happy to do it

PAL to RPAL Update.
Home: NB
Took RPAL course on July 16, 2022
RPAL delivered (tracking) to processing centre in Miramichi, NB on July 19, 2022.
RCMP Website shows the 1st update as of this morning September 26, 2022:
"We have completed the initial review of your firearms licence application. If additional information is required, you will be contacted. Please check the status again at a later date."
My credit card shows as charged September 26, 2022 as well.
Hopefully this thing gets done before the changes.

Still pending review. People with a later CC date have already been approved and got their licenses. All my questions were No's. Starting to think there is no hope I'll get it in time.

Yea I emailed the CFO and got no response.
Meanwhile, I dialy check the last few remaining handguns in stock and watched their inventory go from the low double digits to sold out or 1 in some cases. I have zero hope anything will be available whenever they decide to get off their ass and stamp my papers.

But you really don't want to use a steel rod against your barrel.

Crossing fingers now... I keep trying to call the line, but I get the "We're sorry we are unable to take your call" or, the handful of times I do get manage to get through and wait on hold, it just hangs up after 8-15 minutes.

I have a pending transfer for a restricted firearm in BC. Is there a excel sheet tracking where BC CFO's progress are at on transfers. My ref# is 5997xxx. I purchased on Aug6 and transfer initiated on Aug15.

Yup, there is no downside to having your restricted privileges beyond the extra cost for the course.
The biggest advantage beyond being able to get restricted is if a non-restricted you own ends up getting declassified then it’s easy to deal with compared to if you don’t have your RPAL.

For sure it is. You'll have access to other restricted firearms for now, and you'll be ready to hit the ground running when the transfer freeze is repealed by a competent government.

I am new to this hobby. I (finally) received my RPAL about 6 weeks ago and since then, I have purchased a few pistols. Waiting for adoption papers to bring my babies home. I will join a club when they are with me. My question is this, do gun club members typically trade their firearms, at the range, for a few rounds to check them out? There are some firearms out there that I am interested in but not sure if I would like them once I have tried them. Process of buying and selling is too much of a hassle to buy something I don't like.

Some people are happy to let you try out one of their firearms, some are not. I would never ask to try someone's firearm, most agreeable people will offer if you get this chatting.
What Province are you in? Some provinces you need a range membership before they will approve a transfer.

I recommend starting the process of getting your range membership ASAP. Lots of places are full and have waitlists.
Also I would say chat up some people but if they seem disinterested, back off. Some people just want to go out and do their thing. I would personally find it super sketchy if someone walked up and asked to shoot my gun.
Some people go out to the range to talk to other people about guns so don’t be afraid to say hi.

So I took my restricted course at the beginning of June, sent off my application for my restricted asap after the course and patiently waited hoping to beat the freeze. My new PAL card showed up and the fucking rcmp sent me a new non-restricted. What the hell happened here? I know the paperwork was filled out correctly as I had my references check it over. I can't get through to the rcmp on the phone line, and they won't respond to any emails. Has this every happened to anyone before?

They will send you a new card when you buy your first restricted. There are a few handguns still available but you should buy today.

Are you 100% sure it only says non-restricted on the back? Did you keep a copy of what you sent so you can double-check what you put?
I’m sorry man. If you filled it all out correctly you’ll need to call them (CFO) to sort it out. There’s a chance they’ll be able to amend it and you can make a purchase using your license # (which will stay the same).

New PAL holder looking for advice on first non-restricted. Already ordered a 9mm that will arrive in a few months/years. Mainly looking for range use with very small possibilities of hunting later in my life. I'm thinking about pump ~500cad (win sxp, m500, nova, etc) I'm leaning towards relative conpact 20ga as I'm concerned about recoils and don't really want a 4ft gun to carry to the range and store. (12ga recoil could be significant especially with smaller barrel) because i promised my significant other i won't buy another one in a long time so Id want this one to last and be versatile. Any advice? Thanks

A 20 ga is much less versatile than a 12ga. Also the ammo for 20 is less easy to find and still costs as much or more than 12ga. I guess my advice is get a 12 before a 20.

I live in BC and got through to the Federal (no Provincial) CFO by calling after 4.
I don't know if the time had anything to do with it (I just got frustrated with never getting through calling earlier) and thought I'd give that a shot and it worked the first time – I did still have to wait 30 minutes though. They resolved my problem over the phone and my application was approved.
I've never called the BC CFO, but I've seen two numbers posted for them:

1 800 731 4000 x9530Don't know if this helps at all, but good luck.

They're working, transfers coming in. Whenever it's theweekend or holidays, transfers flow in way faster, most likely because they dont have to deal with phones.

I already own a Mossberg 500. Should I buy a maverick 88 security as my bear/bush gun, or should I just get an 18.5 in barrel for the 500 (and save 100$)?

People will disagree with me but I would say get the Maverick 88. That way you can subject the cheaper gun to more abuse and keep your 500 safe.

As someone new you probably won't see cleaning as a chore - at least right away. I personally shoot Sellier & Belott because I don't enjoy field striping my guns. Its the cleanest ammo I've ever shot.
Buy a Uplula as the M&P mags are almost impossible to get the 10th round in by hand.

Buy a bit of both and see what you like, they say 124gr has less recoil, but it is all personal preference, 115 and 124 will cycle perfectly, just buy some decent ammo and try and find it cheap and just start shooting, fundamentals first then start worrying about ammo, most guys like cci blazer, but winchester white box is good for practice and I haven't heard anything bad about PMC bronze

The M&P 2.0 should eat most anything you feed it. Typically target shooters like the lighter 115g ammo, but it is personal preference.

The shotgun can shoot 2 3/4 & 3” shells. If shooting 3” then mag extension allows for max five 3” shells yet allowing for six or seven 2 3/4” shells.

Just got back from the range for the first time, put about 40-50 rounds through my SKS (non corrosive) and shotgun, and about 200 through my 10/22.
How thoroughly do I need to clean them? Just run a patch through the barrels and wipe the bolts? Should I clean triggers too? Gas system?

Who says you need to clean them at all? Lol you will get varying answers from full strip every time you use it to clean it once it starts malfunctioning. It’s all about what you think is a priority.
Myself, I would run my snake through a few times and just clean with a cloth/rag what I can reach in the action.

Oh boy, hate to be the one to break it to you but we are looking at around 3 months for you to see it online, another 3+ to get approved(depending on province) they don’t always call references as well.

I am in NB.
I took course on July 16
Miramichi, NB processing center for RCMP got my application (RPAL) on July 19.
1st and only to date update I have seen on the website was yesterday September 26 which did show they got my application on July 19, that my application has completed the initial review, if other information was required they would contact me and to check the status of the application later.
My CC was also charged the application fee yesterday September 26.

PAL status seems stuck in limbo since January. I will call them again but what is up with the delay? Anyone else in the same boat? The last I heard it was sitting on the desk of the CFO in Ontario.

I would recommend contacting the Ontario CFO’s office.
Did you answer “Yes” to any of the personal history questions? That can result in a 12+ month delay.

As a new shooter, I am looking for opinions on a firearm for target shooting. I am not a hunter, just a plinker. I have purchased a few revolvers (2×.357 and 1× .45) and now I am looking for a long gun that would be fun on the range. Any thoughts? Opinions? Guidance? Thanks for your help.

Look into 22 or pcc’s for fun target and plinking.
Gsg16 and 10/22 are most popular semi auto for 22
Ruger also makes the pc carbine and fx9 are the most popular options for that. 9mm blowback semi autos

If you care about accuracy right out of the box, I would suggest a cz 512 for semi auto, and tikka t1x, cz 457 varmint/mtr for bolt action. These are good 22lr options. Only get a 10/22 if you're willing to upgrade parts later on. It can get way more accurate with stuff like kidd or volquartsen barrels but is not great for target shooting right out of the box. In my humble opinion

Cz457 or Tikka T1x are two excellent options for precision 22LR's. People are literally shooting these rifles out to 200-300m nowadays.
Picked up a Cz457 mtr xrs 16" myself a few months ago, the thing is absolutely gnarly in terms of both accuracy and (in my opinion) looks. I had been heavily leaning towards the Tikka but had a CZ pop up locally and I now cannot recommend them enough.

Looking to put a red dot on my 10/22. Just for plinking so no need for something fancy/high end. My 10/22 came with a weaver scope rail to install. Seems like a lot of red dots are picatinny, like the Browning Buck Mark I was eyeing.
Looking for your recommendations, and if I should go with a weaver sight or if using a picatinny adapter would be better.

Just get a cheapo chinese one off of amazon or aliexpress then, since 22 recoil wont matter much. Or wait until the sig sauer romeo is 180$ again at cabelas or somewhere, if you dont want cheap chinese stuff

Hey has anyone ever tried and had any success ordering parts off the Brownells website? I’ve called their customer service and they said they do ship parts to Canada, and there’s even a filter for “available outside the US” on the site. I’m building a couple p80’s and want a Brownells slide and barrel but im nervous CBSA will just seize them at the border and i’ll have wasted the money! If anyone has done so successfully that would ease my fears.

Ontario timeline: End of March received, June CC charge, corrected name in July and forwarded to CFO, never called contacts afaik.

So what is the current understanding generally speaking… when ban is initiated there will be no more (new?) transfers processed.
Is it generally thought that all initiated transfers prior, with reference numbers, would be worked on still?

This question is asked often. The answer is that transfers already initiated should be completed. That is how it is written in current legislation.

How much weight can a single sling stud hold? My CZ 457 Lux has only one forward sling stud and the stock is wooden. I was planning on putting a bipod setup weighting 28.4 oz on it, but would it break?

I would assume they can hold a fair bit. Especially since they are meant to take half the weight of the gun itself being dropped to carry

Hi everyone, I’m looking to get my first .22 rifle. Looking for advice.
I’m looking most closely at the Browning BL 22 Lever Gun. I’ve never fired a lever gun before but from videos I’ve seen they look insanely fun to plink with! I like the cool, old-school mystique of them too.
I’m hoping to join a local shooting range when applications open next spring. The gun will mostly be used for affordable sport shooting at the range.
Is the Browning a good choice? Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks all!
EDIT: could I hunt grouse with a gun like that?

Just a question, if you’ve been charged in the past and the charges have been dropped, can you still get a non-restricted firearms license? I only ask because today I did the course and passed and now I have to submit it to the RCMP and the charges I had prior to this course were false hence why they were dropped. Will this affect me?

- Purchased handgun online 08/21 from same province
- Called CFO a few times throughout early Sept - never got through
- called CFO 09/29, 20 minutes on hold and got through
- CF agent offered to clear the transfer and received via email within 15 minutes
- handgun arrives Tuesday 10/04
- registration papers maybe 2 more weeks via the mail ? ?
Edit - picked up 10/05 from the Post Office. Awaiting copy of registration in the mail.

I am trying to get ahold of the CFP, most of the time it says there are too many calls and it hangs up right away. I have noticed now, it keeps you on hold for exactly 30 minutes, then says they are experiencing system problems, this is ridiculous. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? There are 366,800 new government jobs since February 2020, seems to me a few hundred could be put towards firearms owners, the least dangerous people in Canada.

All your purchases will need to be approved by your provincial CFO. You can call and demand that they rush your registration but I doubt the call will result in you jumping the line forward.

You should wait like everyone else. You'll get it eventually, you're just at the back of the line right now. We're all in this together. Some people might get it expedited by the CFO if there is a really good reason that they need it ASAP.

Called the Ontario CFO this morning. I actually had a couple of real questions, not the usual “how long? Speed me up!” Questions they have been fielding for a couple of months. Gist of the call was about once a private transfer is complete, how long do I have to go get it. The answer is that there is no time set in stone, just has to be reasonable. But the nice lady did say don’t leave it for a month, but a few days is not a problem. I did manage to give her my reference numbers (was hoping hoping hoping...) but alas, not yet done. I did ask her if they had any questions for me, but was told all appears in order. Now the good news - they are in every weekend now. And confirmed that they have hired contract positions. The nice lady I talked to is raking the OT and loving it. So things are moving along in Onterrible!
