So when the police previously said 90+% of guns used in crime were smuggled that was a lie? Or is this the lie?

175

u/0672216 Jun 11 '26

Keyword here is “traced”. Like that chopped pos “pistol” 10/22 that was posted here the other day; it can probably be traced back to Canada.

This is straight up lying by omission. How about the guns that can’t be traced?

106

u/Trick-Goat-3643 Jun 11 '26

And the guns that are traced tend to be "firearms" like from the post the other day where police siezed 13 "firearms" and it was pellet guns and a crossbow. All of these count toward those misleading statistics about firearms in Canada

15

u/JackassJJ88 Jun 12 '26

I bet the pellet and air guns are doing a lot of heavy lifting here too. Lots of kids screw around with them without knowing the consequences and catch a charge.

70

u/Spare-Swim9458 Jun 11 '26

This is a lie. They’re saying firearms that can’t be traced, (serial number missing), are Canadian even without that firearm matching a description of a missing Canadian firearm. And also non firearms that are considered firearms when use for crime, (pellet, paintball, airsoft I assume), are also being claimed to be Canadian “firearms”.

45

u/Trick-Goat-3643 Jun 11 '26

The pellet, paintball, airsoft guns dont even have to be used in a crime to be added to these statistics. If they are seized during an investigation from someone's home they count towards these numbers

21

u/4r4nd0mninj4 Jun 11 '26

Yep. Cops get called to a domestic and a dozen paintball, airsoft, and a few cap and lazer tag guns get confiscated as "present" during the altercation and get labeled as domestically sourced guns.

21

u/deepbluemeanies Jun 11 '26

You are just now realizing the Federal gov and their media supporters lie to us every day....?

14

u/Infinite_Price_3550 Jun 11 '26

I think the 90+% number has been reported on by the metropolitan area polices forces. Like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver etc. The numbers in this article are only for the RCMPs tracing which i would expect to have a high Canadian origin then guns found in the cities. The fact that BB guns, air guns, crossbows, etc get classified as a firearm if used in a crime are also going to increase the number of Canadian origin guns they find used in crimes. Their isn't enough nuance in their reporting. They lump too many categories together to really have a clear picture of how many actual firearms that are used in crimes are smuggled into Canada. And ill end with saying this again, these are only the RCMPs tracing numbers. Not ever polices forces numbers for the whole country.

1

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Jun 12 '26

Correct. Their jurisdiction barely overlaps, hence why ON/QC and many other places are excluded.

15

u/newtoabunchofstuff Jun 11 '26

I think it has to do more with how they define "crime guns" is misleading because it includes toys, replicas, 3d printed guns and air guns.

18

u/Jaded-Juggernaut-244 Jun 11 '26

Yes, and as stated, ANY firearm that is not traceable is automatically labeled "domestic".

So, all those handguns coming in from the US with serial numbers obliterated, if not caught at the border, once discovered on the street will be classified as having originated in Canada.

ANY firearm, toy, replica, air soft, pellet gun, etc etc, discovered at a crime scene, (not even used in the crime, just present) are classified as crime guns in the stats.

2

u/DFA_Wildcat Jun 11 '26

Both can be true. If 90% of crime guns came from the US they can be difficult or impossible to trace because they were never legally imported or registered here. 90% of the guns they can trace means those were most likely brought in by a Canadian dealer or registered to someone in Canada. The 90% they can trace is probably 10% of the firearms used in crimes.

1

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Jun 12 '26

Both can be true - they are different police forces and their gun tracing efforts likely won't overlap.

Oh this is just the tip of the iceberg of their new push... There have been reports of police departments cold calling the spouses of PAL holders to inquire about potential future domestic violence issues

That’s what happens when you live in Quebec

2

u/Late_Winner6859 Jun 12 '26

So that’s québécoised then?

11

u/Trick-Goat-3643 Jun 11 '26

15

u/some_guy2024 Jun 11 '26

That is beyond fucked up but not surprising for Quebec… no calls to the wives/family members of known gang members, convicted felons, repeat offenders but hey, lets call the spouses of the people who follow the rules 🤮

9

u/wpgffs Jun 11 '26

And here I was hoping it was a scene from Minority Report

1

u/SirKickBan Jun 12 '26

I know the content is fucked, but also.. What is with that audio?

Do they want people to listen to their crap or not?

12

u/ThrowRA_That_Owl_25 Jun 11 '26

Somebody has a pre-crime divisions now?

51

u/NemrahG Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

If you read the article they say most of the guns that can be traced originate from Canada, which makes sense since a lot of those would be registered and have their serial numbers recorded in Canada where the RCMP can access that info. What the article is missing is that likely most of the guns they recover can’t be traced, and the origin can’t be determined. So ya the article is very misleading and basically misinformation

23

u/Trick-Goat-3643 Jun 11 '26

More important than that is the definition they use to determine what a firearm is. They are counting BB guns from canadian tire if they seized them from somebody's house during an investigation

12

u/deepbluemeanies Jun 11 '26

When provenance can't be proven (eg. missing serial numbers) they assume the gun is from Canada even if it is of a type that is prohibited to import to Canada. This is definition is political designed to create a narrative that guns used in gun violence mostly come from Canada and this makes non-gun owners more liekly to support bans and confiscations.

4

u/ThrowRA_That_Owl_25 Jun 11 '26

Toy guns, replicas, pellet guns are all registered and have a serial number, right? 🙄

You are looking for sense where there is none.

0

u/NemrahG Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

Plenty of things have a serial number, its like the main way manufacturers track their production lol. I’m just saying the rcmp has better access to records for domestic stuff so naturally it’s easier for them to trace it.

2

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

Correct. This is an obvious survivor's bias scenario. City police forces are more likely to encounter smuggled pistols as the RCMP doesn't operate in, say, Toronto, where all the US-originated pistols end up. They are far more likely to encouter a sawn-off Cooey in Bumfucknowhereville, Saskatchewan.

1

u/NemrahG Jun 12 '26

The whole article is dumb and misleading, they literally say later that the rcmp did almost 7k traces and just 2,800 were able to be traced to a source. I feel like the headline should be “The RCMP has no idea where most guns come from”

2

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Jun 12 '26

Yeah, that's what modern headlines do, to push a narrative.

38

u/Lumindan Jun 11 '26

Redacted data set that excludes major provinces? Check.

Slanted data set with questionable gathering methods? Check.

Right after owners get to breathe a small sigh of relief due the extension and scc ruling? Check.

A not so subtle inclination that crime guns are domestic? Check.

CTV and our media is a joke.

18

u/Scott-YYC Jun 11 '26

No one should trust the RCMP, which is sad considering they were once a world class police agency. Now they're just political clowns, and a disgrace to the nation.

5

u/ThrowRA_That_Owl_25 Jun 11 '26

Highly doubt they were ever world class. Just ask any female officer.

-1

u/Scott-YYC Jun 11 '26

When they were world class they didn't have diversity hires and hiring quotas.. A police force should be seen as unbiased, and the very moment the first member was allowed to wear a turban, they lost that unbiased appearance. When the stopped hiring the best available candidate, they became what they are today.

2

u/Saskatchewan-Man sk Jun 11 '26

"The countless crimes, abuses, and scandals are not the problem. Its turbans and DEI!"

They've been pigs since jump street.

always has been/astronaut with gun jpg

0

u/Scott-YYC Jun 11 '26

That's the same year the RCMP started allowing turbans. Coincidence? Jump Street isn't that old lol.

4

u/Saskatchewan-Man sk Jun 11 '26

Were they wearing turbans when they used force to quell labour demonstrations and killed workers?

Were they wearing turbans when they were rounding up indigenous kids to forcibly put them in residential schools?

Were they wearing turbans when they illegally surveiled indigenous folks and alleged communists?

Were they wearing turbans when they killed sled dogs to fuck with the Inuit people?

Were they wearing turbans when they forced indigenous people onto reserves?

The list continues.

Jump street was far before 1989, but do go on...

4

u/fuckbitingflies Jun 11 '26

The list is so long. Ridiculous organization since its inception.

5

u/Saskatchewan-Man sk Jun 11 '26

Nah dude. Didn't you read the other guy's post? its the turbans. Won't someone think of the turbans?! When they just wore hats they were a world class policing organization!

u/Thereal_Stormm006 Jun 11 '26

Gun control fails every time yet they keep pushing for it because it makes them look & “feel” good.

10

u/Top_Importance6216 Jun 11 '26

What a carefully worded lie.

20

u/Stryker1-1 Jun 11 '26

So they tossed in everything including the kitchen sink to try and get the numbers to fit their narrative how liberal of them

3

u/ThrowRA_That_Owl_25 Jun 11 '26

Lol. The kitchen sink. Not sure about the narrative but to cover their laziness for sure.

8

u/goshathegreat Jun 11 '26

Oh yes, all those concealed carry pistols you see in crimes around Toronto with 3” barrels certainly came from Canada…

8

u/Thumper45 Jun 11 '26

They are including things that are not guns that you can buy from Canadain Tire.

"replicas, toys, 3D Printed guns, pellet or air guns"

So when you start counting things like "toys" as a "gun" then you get a very skewed number. Also, there is not tracking means for any of the above items so to say you know where they came from is a bold faced lie.

15

u/deepbluemeanies Jun 11 '26

If they can't trace them (serial numbers removed) they put them in "Canada sourced" column - even when they are of a type (eg. barrel shorted than 4.25") that is prohibited for public import/sale in Canada.

The Liberals and their enablers (Bell/CBC) will work to confuse Canadians on this. Those who try to define what this is on, for example, social media will encounter this:

Social media posts deemed to undermine “social stability” would be subject to blocking orders by a federal censor under a cabinet bill introduced yesterday. “The law applies as soon as it comes into force,” said Heritage Minister Marc Miller. Blacklocks Reporter

This is congruent with the systems in place with our new strategic partner, China.

6

u/HappyCan7250 Jun 11 '26

Thats fucking insane. Sounds like Britain as well.

LPC trying to crush any opposition. It's scary how blatant they are too, and Canadians just keep cheering Dear Leader on. LPC has lost their marbles.

6

u/lonegrey Jun 11 '26

...and of course the Liberals won't fact check because this headline aligns to their rhetoric. Pathetic.

6

u/x7nick7x Jun 11 '26

It is also only firearms traced by the RCMP, the article omits any stats from Ontario and Quebec.

7

u/MajorCocknBalls Jun 11 '26

Everyone needs to click the report an error link in the article and blast ctv in their email. This article is blatant biased lies.

4

u/Dependent_Border7961 Jun 11 '26

Already done. Everyone who can should report the article for Journalistic error.

The key distinction is their stats are actually BS and not rooted in reality in any way.

They have created a framework which gives them the narrative they wish. Nothing more. There is nothing truly informative about their information. It is carefully crafted prose and propaganda. The collection and recording of the info nationwide has no set of universal standards for law enforcement to follow and the framework in which it is entered into projects the narrative they wish to portray. This is why StatsCan has to run a disclaimer on their web pages for firearms data. It is wholly unreliable.

5

u/escv_69420 Jun 11 '26

Of course they all come from Canada.

It's where they ended up after they were smuggled up here from the states.

5

u/julienjj Jun 11 '26

« Traced »
It’s like saying most cars involved in hit and run that where identified where cars registered with a provincial license plate😂

Hard to trace those you can’t trace.

3

u/Sharpe_Points Jun 11 '26

The two big things here are:

1) Ontario and Quebec were not included in this data.

2) weapons traced included toys, replicas, and air guns, but we don't know what proportion of the sample they made up. Given that air guns and replicas are commonly found on criminals, I wouldn't be surprised if they made up a large chunk of the sample.

3

u/Jaded-Juggernaut-244 Jun 11 '26

We will never know.

They are all classified as "crime guns". Even if the stats for ON & QC were included...there is no distinction which makes the data totally unreliable and nothing more than a prop for political theatre.

3

u/Agile-Delay-8770 Jun 11 '26

The thing that this article doesn’t discuss and I think it doesn’t because it’s a hit piece just after the amnesty was extended, is that air rifles/pellet guns, BB guns, and other immitation rifles are also considered firearms under canadian law. So how many immitation rifles were used? No one knows and that fact was conveniently left out.

Excluding 2 of the biggest provinces where police chiefs have issued statements that 95% of gun crime is with smuggled guns is a travesty to journalistic integrity. The remaining 5% broke down into firearms that were stolen or could not be traced.

Another crucial factor is, nothing is said about how many were stollen and how many were used by licensed PAL holders. All that is said, is that they were traced back to canadian origin, but this is a broad term, and if I had to put my money on it, I would say 99.9% of crime is not committed by licensed PAL holders. Those individuals who go through a licenced background check everyday, go through mental health evaluations, and subject to red flag laws.

Another factor is if a cop sees a gun at a crime scene and it has a serial number the cop will most likely trace the serial number to build the case but if it’s something that was illegal to sell in Canada anyways, such as a short barreled pistol or ar, or it doesn’t have its serial number the cop won’t exactly be able to trace it so it would not count to this quota.

TLDR: article is worded to mislead people and is likely an attempt to use a falsely trumped up wedge issue to divide voters.

3

u/CurlyWurly61 Jun 11 '26

Well said, dude 👏

3

u/Some-Owl8102 Jun 11 '26

nice timing to change the narrative

3

u/LeeFrann Jun 11 '26

whats the percentage of "replicas, toys, 3D-printed guns, pellet or air guns" because i can garentee 100% were bought at a walmart and didnt come across the border.

3

u/Enfield3033 Jun 11 '26

For those that clicked “Report an error“ on the article, what did y’all write in your email?

Having a hard time coming up with something sweet and short to the point. Thanks in advance

4

u/Dependent_Border7961 Jun 11 '26

Here is what I wrote: "The title is intentionally misleading. Most of the guns that CAN be traced come back to Canada. The problem is, most guns in Firearm related crimes CANNOT be traced, so their origin cannot be determined. The RCMP then assumes that if a Firearm can't be traced, it is native to Canada, even if the Firearm is a Prohibited Firearm."

3

u/Enfield3033 Jun 11 '26

Greatly appreciated, thanks!

3

u/GreenCactus223 Jun 11 '26

Everyone should report an error in the story.

3

u/ThePoeticJester Jun 11 '26

Hey guys check it out, every person I asked in my neighbourhood said yeah they live around there like over 90%!

I didnt ask anyone from outside that area though, I didnt see a point since it wasnt near me and I dont care to know

3

u/Boattailfmj Jun 12 '26

This misinformation is just a talking point we can disprove with actual data when pro gun control people repeat it. They handed us an easy win while debating.

1

u/Trick-Goat-3643 Jun 12 '26

Most people dont repeat it or bother listening to debate about it, it just sits at the back of their mind as yet another reason they dont see a problem with what the government is doing

4

u/soundssarcastic bc Jun 11 '26

I can trace poop in my house back to my asshole, but only because Im not watching the rest of my family poop. So is 75% of the poop also from my asshole? Guess we'll never know

2

u/mywaaaaife Jun 11 '26

And those that can’t be traced didn’t. What a stupid fucking headline.

2

u/drfunk on Jun 11 '26

The centre reports that 71 per cent of those firearms traced in 2024 were domestically sourced long guns, 17 per cent were smuggled handguns, nine per cent were domestically sourced handguns and two per cent were smuggled long guns. A small number of firearms were not categorized as either long guns or handguns.

3

u/Trick-Goat-3643 Jun 11 '26

BB gun rifles fall under the "long gun" category here

2

u/CallousDisregard13 Jun 11 '26

Please report this article and YouTube video as misinformation on YouTube with a quick summary of why.

We have to combat this bullshit at every opportunity.

2

u/admin_bait14 Jun 11 '26

Don't they mean that they 'came from within Canada' after they were illegally smuggled from the USA?

https://giphy.com/gifs/lHfxDepSGlzom6f65K

2

u/IGnuGnat Jun 11 '26

I remember when Sick Kids released a study on firearms injuries and the news media actually ran with a bunch of headlines similar to: "A child is injured by a firearm every day in Ontario" or something.

That sounded so obviously ridiculous I had to dig into the study, to figure out how they classified "firearm injuries". The way that I remember it, airsoft, pellet guns, Nerf guns and lawn dart injuries were all classified as "firearms injuries". So, if a five years old got their eye grazed by a projectile while playing with Nerf toys, it was logged as "firearms injury". I wish I were joking but it was very literally that stupid and the media ran with it. Not one of the "journalists" involved ever dug into it to see what was actually going on. It was a joke

2

u/Fuck_you_all22 Jun 11 '26

Traced back to canada or mars. Pal holders are not the problem. Police force being this politicized is scary given they have power to take away one's freedome

2

u/turitelle Jun 12 '26

Government sponsored media like ctv will say whatever the liberals want.

2

u/Late_Winner6859 Jun 12 '26

I guess, since these were seized in Canada, they must be coming from Canada, right?

2

u/Fluffy_Dad Jun 12 '26

The article says that 20% of the firearms that are recovered in a crime, are domestically sourced. As well as 90% of the firearm related crime are NOT recovered. Which mathematically is 2% of the total firearm related crime is from domestically sourced firearms, which is what StatsCan sources confirm.

2

u/Inside-Profile-5865 Jun 12 '26

How come when I see pictures of what they’ve seized from the criminals, it’s always these teeny tiny pocket Glocks and extended mags? When was the last time you could purchase a handgun in Canada what was under 4.13 inches?

https://torontosun.com/news/crime/opp-u-s-homeland-security-team-up-for-largest-gun-bust-in-ontario-history#

2

u/Designer-Employee119 Jun 12 '26

given the breadth and depth of corruption within the RCMP, I trust this about as much as I'd trust a shotgun enema.

2

u/Armedfist Jun 12 '26

Should sue the person that is doing this kind of misinformation

2

u/Competitive_Fun_5223 Jun 13 '26

and what percentage of those guns used in crimes were committed by PAL holders?

2

u/Feeling-Water-6824 Jun 13 '26

The article was by design. Its to gain public support because the amnesty got extended. Its intentionally misleading. If you can only trace 100 guns but omit you had 900 you couldn't, then most 'traced' guns are domestic. No mention of the 900 you couldn't. So 90% of guns traced is domestic when in reality it could be less than 10% if you take into account 900. But that doesn't send the right message the government wants.

2

u/Trick-Goat-3643 Jun 15 '26

Also helps when you omit the fact 98 of that 100 were BB guns, paintball guns and water pistols...

1

u/CurlyWurly61 Jun 11 '26

I was JUST about to post this and figured I would check the sub to see if anyone beat me to it.

1

u/bigsxvhuj533 Jun 12 '26

It’s all in how they worded it. Lawyer speak.

1

u/No-Night-48 Jun 13 '26

CTV Ottawa has some explaining to do after this article. They knew it was false information and chose to post it. How do we trust them moving forward.

1

u/Livid-Basket-9193 Jun 17 '26

Liberal Bullshit
