The thing that this article doesn’t discuss and I think it doesn’t because it’s a hit piece just after the amnesty was extended, is that air rifles/pellet guns, BB guns, and other immitation rifles are also considered firearms under canadian law. So how many immitation rifles were used? No one knows and that fact was conveniently left out.
Excluding 2 of the biggest provinces where police chiefs have issued statements that 95% of gun crime is with smuggled guns is a travesty to journalistic integrity. The remaining 5% broke down into firearms that were stolen or could not be traced.
Another crucial factor is, nothing is said about how many were stollen and how many were used by licensed PAL holders. All that is said, is that they were traced back to canadian origin, but this is a broad term, and if I had to put my money on it, I would say 99.9% of crime is not committed by licensed PAL holders. Those individuals who go through a licenced background check everyday, go through mental health evaluations, and subject to red flag laws.
Another factor is if a cop sees a gun at a crime scene and it has a serial number the cop will most likely trace the serial number to build the case but if it’s something that was illegal to sell in Canada anyways, such as a short barreled pistol or ar, or it doesn’t have its serial number the cop won’t exactly be able to trace it so it would not count to this quota.
TLDR: article is worded to mislead people and is likely an attempt to use a falsely trumped up wedge issue to divide voters.
