If you read the article they say most of the guns that can be traced originate from Canada, which makes sense since a lot of those would be registered and have their serial numbers recorded in Canada where the RCMP can access that info. What the article is missing is that likely most of the guns they recover can’t be traced, and the origin can’t be determined. So ya the article is very misleading and basically misinformation

More important than that is the definition they use to determine what a firearm is. They are counting BB guns from canadian tire if they seized them from somebody's house during an investigation

When provenance can't be proven (eg. missing serial numbers) they assume the gun is from Canada even if it is of a type that is prohibited to import to Canada. This is definition is political designed to create a narrative that guns used in gun violence mostly come from Canada and this makes non-gun owners more liekly to support bans and confiscations.

Toy guns, replicas, pellet guns are all registered and have a serial number, right? 🙄

You are looking for sense where there is none.

Plenty of things have a serial number, its like the main way manufacturers track their production lol. I’m just saying the rcmp has better access to records for domestic stuff so naturally it’s easier for them to trace it.

Correct. This is an obvious survivor's bias scenario. City police forces are more likely to encounter smuggled pistols as the RCMP doesn't operate in, say, Toronto, where all the US-originated pistols end up. They are far more likely to encouter a sawn-off Cooey in Bumfucknowhereville, Saskatchewan.

The whole article is dumb and misleading, they literally say later that the rcmp did almost 7k traces and just 2,800 were able to be traced to a source. I feel like the headline should be “The RCMP has no idea where most guns come from”
