RPAL Timeline, Alberta applicant:
04 Nov 2022 - Sent paper application via registered mail
10 Nov 2022 - Application received by RCMP
08 Dec 2022 - Credit card charged
15 June 2023 - Follow up email sent to Alberta Chief Firearms Office asking for an update/if there was any assistance I could provide to expedite the process
17 July 2023 - Response to follow up email received stating processing is completed and card has been mailed out (confirmed with my references & spouse that none of them were contacted)

For the foreseeable future I would say no. Until the importers know what the future looks like I dont expect them to be eager to be caught with dozens of rifles they wouldnt be able to sell. That said dont give in to a scalper either. Brand new the regular pattern isnt worth more than 1500 (mine was 1400 back in february) TI has LMG and SR on sale for 1200 I would get either of those before rewarding scalping behaviour. I have the SR as well and have been very happy with it.

I just acquired an ex sniper Mosin Nagant (first gun woohoo) and it's on its way to me. Does anyone know where I can shoot steel core ammo closest to the greater Montreal area? I really don't feel like overpaying for lead core ammo when I can get Norinco surplus goodness for like 70 cents each round. I don't mind driving an hour away from the city to a range

Only place I can shoot cheap ammo thru my SKS is my cousins farmer field, but I have to collect the brass after.
The brass gets ejected all over the place, and I have a hard time finding it. Is there any sort of "bag" or "cage" type thing that goes over the ejection port that would make the collection easier? I have access to 3d printers, if that's a possibility.

This could work, but another good option would be to have a tarp off to your right where the casings are getting ejected.

Is firearms.rcmp.ca a phishing site? Just started getting emails from onlinepal@notifications.canada.ca linking to it with the usual shpeel of deleting mycfp blah blah blah.
I'm fairly confident that it's a phishing site. Nearly caught me as a new PAL holder.
Edit: Could be coincidental, but it was only after my first and only online purchase from Tenda Canada. Haven't even received my goods yet!

I’m gonna let you in on a secret, as soon as I could see it online I called the fuck outta my CFO. Result was I got my license in 3.5 months whereas the average wait was closer to 6. My wife who applied on the same date as me has to wait 5 months. YMMV.

At that price point theres not much. Your gonna be looking at 180 style guns and thus far each one regardless of make comes with a high and well documented (search the sub to see photos) chance of critical failure.
Meanwhile, reliable semis in 7.62 x 39 exist at the same price. You should be thinking about something in this group or be prepared to up your budget considerably.

I have 308s,22s and other rifles, I wanted a 223 to maybe tailor some rounds to do no fur damage to foxes and coyotes and as a light pinker, I've missed shooting a c7 for the past few years... lol

I get that. I have a T97 to get me by while my AR sits locked up. You might find a used T97 which could meet your needs but Im not sure what those go for nowadays. That or a bolt in .223/5.56 might be your best options for your price point currently.

complete noob here, question regarding scope ring height. I have a Primary arms 1-6x that I want to mount on my tavor 7 but im not sure what size scope rings to get. I dont understand how scope ring height works

Do not use rings. Buy a mount. 1.5 is the absolute cowitness height. 1.93 gives a more heads up position and 1.7 is a compromise. Do your research, there’s plenty of threads about it. I run a 1.7 but for the Tavor platform if it’s the factory rail, I would 100% run the 1.93. But with that you have to take your HOB into consideration and do hold overs at some distances.

If it's the only thing you already have, and money is extremely tight, and you're picking well-constructed and heavy-for-calibre bullets, and you have the discipline to keep your shots under 100yds? Sure. It's adequate.
If you're buying a rifle intentionally with deer hunting in mind? 223 Rem is a bad choice.
At the muzzle, it starts off barely above the minimum power needed to reliably and humanely take a deer. By 75-100yds, it's dropped below that *KE *floor.
tl;dr it's at the bottom end of adequate. If you haven't bought yet, buy something else.

All cup-and-core constructed bullets do this when you're talking about softpoints around the 2500-3500fps range. 223 isn't some ultra-fast round that somehow separates from the normal ballistics of chamberings that are more appropriate for medium-sized game.
It's very much in the same velocity range as more deer-capable rounds like 270 Win, 243 Win, 7mm-08 Rem, and 30-06 Spfld — except it's a smaller case with less powder capacity, and it can only reach the velocities of more-capable rounds by sacrificing bullet weight.
Compared to those others, 223 Rem is a far weaker round with significantly less killing power.
If one chooses the correct loading, 223 Rem is adequate for deer at shorter ranges, and only barely.
This makes it so that you can ethically hunt deer within 400 yards if you choose the correct loading.
I genuinely hope that no newbie reads this and thinks that it's ethical to hunt deer anywhere near 400yds with 223.
No reputable ammo manufacturer or outdoors publication is touting 223 Rem as an ethical option that can reliably make quick, humane kills on deer at that range.
For newbies here who are seeing two people disagree on a forum without a way to sort out what the correct answer is, I'd suggest looking at what reputable sources are saying: That it's adequate at shorter distances, but suffers from some severe limitations in power.
If you're broke, licensed, in need of a full freezer and a 223 Rem is all that one has, it's be justifiable to bring that rifle deer hunting and stay within its limitations.
But those limitations are significant well before getting to MPBR distances. 7.62x39 is a better choice of chambering if one is seeking out a rifle purchase with deer hunting in mind.

I wasn't even touching on sectional density. It's important, but I try to keep in mind that this is a Newbies' thread and I aim to keep info digestible.
If I'm getting nerd-sniped, though...
(Newbies, what follows is not stuff that you need to learn: you can choose appropriate deer ammo based on whether there's a deer symbol on the ammo box)
223 Rem is barely adequate for deer hunting, but it is at the bottom end of adequate if you keep shots close.
I love the stuff on Chuckhawks, but that rule of thumb requiring 0.200PSI in sectional density for deer was made with non-premium cup-and-core softpoints in mind. A 60gr bullet is only 0.171PSI in SD, but if you're talking about a partition with 65% weight retention rather than a cup-and-core with 50% retention, I'd consider that 60gr premium bullet to be pretty equivalent in sectional density to your standard nonpremium deer bullet in a 270 or 308
Calculations for SD equivalents of partitioned 60gr 223 Rem to cup-and-core "standard" chamberings:
Chambering Equivalent grain weight Calculation 243 Win 92gr (60/(7000*0.224²)*(65/50)*(7000*0.243²) 6.5 Crd 108gr (60/(7000*0.224²)*(65/50)*(7000*0.264²) 270 Win 119gr (60/(7000*0.224²)*(65/50)*(7000*0.277²) 308 Win 147gr (60/(7000*0.224²)*(65/50)*(7000*0.308²) 338 LM 178gr (60/(7000*0.224²)*(65/50)*(7000*0.338²) 375 H&H 219gr (60/(7000*0.224²)*(65/50)*(7000*0.375²) 45-70 Govt 326gr (60/(7000*0.224²)*(65/50)*(7000*0.458²) Put another way: A 60gr partitioned .224 bullet is going to behave terminally pretty similarly to a .224 cup-and-core bullet that's 78gr.
This is equivalent in SD to a 120gr 270 Win, a 150gr 308 Win, or a 325gr 45-70.
But with way less kinetic energy to reliably drive that sectional density through a deer.
Contrary to what the other user was implying, 223 doesn't go at some extremely-high velocity that gives it totally different terminal ballistics. It's got a speed about equivalent to a 270 Win and a piss-poor ballistic coefficient.
Realistically, with a 24" barrel, a 223 Rem with adequate SD/construction will cap out at 80-110yds for most factory rounds, and about 180yds with the hottest handloads I can find listed (75gr bonded Scirocco II in front of Accur 2520 powder)
Unless a hunter is a competent handloader or has a hunting spot where the shot opportunities are going to be relatively close, I just wouldn't recommend 223 Rem as a deer chambering.

You can get restricted with the Rpal. Short barreled semi auto rifles, handguns if they weren't already banned.
The ak47 is prohibited so you can't get one. You can look up on armalytics to see if things are NR, R, P.

Get both. It’s an extra class and test and it’s 100% worth it. You won’t regret getting one for sure. Also like the other person said ak47 and many of the cooler guns are prohibited. Closest thing you can get to an ak47 is probably a t81

Filling out the PAL application, applying online, passport expired so i cant use that at the moment, could i use my health card?, for the online application it does list Health Card as a type of ID, but many places dont accept Health Card as valid ID, so im just wondering if its to bait people out of 60 bucks

No. A pal is a shall-issue license. They have to notify you of any denial and you can appeal a rejection.

Friend without a PAL wants give me money to buy a gun for when we go to the range. I know I have to possess/store the gun and can't transfer the gun to him (because he doesn't have a PAL). I know we can go to the range together and he can shoot the gun.
Anything I'm missing here? Is there any risk in this for me?

If your friend is giving you money to buy a gun for them and you give it to them, that's illegal.
If they gift you money and you buy a gun for yourself with it, that's fine.

He's impulsive, sees something he likes and wants it. I've told him to just take the course and told him that if does want me to buy it, he can not have it. I've told him that it's my gun until he gets his PAL.
This is all fine and dandy and I understand that I can't transfer it to him without him having a PAL, but was interested if I was missing something obvious.

Not commenting on the minimum sentence or punishment but trigger lock is not a requirement for NR for transport. It has to be unloaded and that’s it.

My PAL expired and I have no intent or use to extend it again. Honestly it expired last year and I just didn't notice. Too busy being a new parent which is also the reason why I have no time for guns or desire to keep them in my house for now. My question now is what do I do with my rifle? How do I dispose of it?

If you want to sell it/transfer it you will need to renew. If you simply want it gone then the cops could seize it for you with no need to renew.

A reference is anyone who has known you for at least three (3) years and is at least 18 years old. However, he or she cannot be your current conjugal partner.

The sale and purchase of handguns for individuals has been frozen. They are not prohibited firearms. The next conservative government will most likely allow handguns to be sold again. Let’s hope for a fall election.

Do any clubs do day passes? I'm in the process of finding a full time club, but was wondering in the meantime if there are any ranges that do 'day passes' or similar? Not finding much info other than some clubs specifically saying that they don't do them. Does that mean some do? I about and hour north of toronto, but happy to do some driving if necessary. Thanks.

Target Sports Canada north of Markham will probably be the closest to you since you’re north of everything
Silverdale Gun Club is the one I prefer to go to as there are less people in general, but it is all the way near St. Catherines
Both clubs day passes are around $40 I think
But since you’re already an hour north of Toronto, I’d recommend looking for some crownland near you where you could shoot for free and instead spend that $50 on more ammo lol

Thanks! I’d love the crown land option, but despite using the map etc I can’t seem to find any definitive info on where would be ok. Is it all crown land or does some have restrictions still? I just can’t seem to find total clarity on this and I hate to fuck up. Lol.

Google ''Ontario Crown Land Atlas'' the top govt of Ontario site will take you to a map where they have all sorts of colorful overlays on them. You want to look for any color that is not purple (reserves) or grey (private land). Also double check green areas since some provincial/national parks don't allow firearms.
It can be a bit confusing since it doesn't have any landmarks or labels on them, I often have it and google maps open at the same time and cross reference eachother to find camping spots.

This is the way. I do the same thing!
The atlas lets you use a fader to make the crownland stand out more so you can find it.
- On the top bar click on "Find Information" Then onto "Get land use information"
- Once you find a crownland spot, click on it (on the map)
- The information will appear on the side bar, then click on an optionnext to "Report:"
- Scroll down on the report until you find hunting, if it says yes, its usually perfectly fine to go on crownland to target shoot (make sure you have all legal docs and allowances for hunting if you intend to)
The above are the steps I usually take to find some good crownland to shoot on. As the above comment stated, use google maps along with this tool to make sure the location you've chosen is actually usable (Open space, not in the middle of a swamp, etc.)

Depends on where you are in relation to the store. Usually you do have to sign but I’ve read accounts of people having their restricteds just dropped off on the porch.

Followed up with CFO about PAL application submitted back in Nov 2022 about 4 weeks ago and they've told me it's been sent to the AFO for final processing. It's been 4 weeks since that phone call is there a way I can speed this process up? Ontario BTW

I’ve been waiting for over a month for my registration on my now-restricted WK180 and everytime I call I gotta walk these people through what I’m even doing as if they’ve never encountered a change of classification before. I’d like to take this thing to the range to make sure it functions properly and I’m wondering what the law says about transporting it as a NR (still have the original upper/barrel) and assembling the restricted upper at the range and tearing it apart to take it home. Sounds sketch but if that’s illegal i obviously won’t do it but I really want to function test this thing. Tips?

Yea I felt like that had to be. And yes he did and CFP sent it to Alberta CFO soon after they got it and it’s been sitting there ever since with no progress. Every time I call they say theyll add a note to the file saying I called but it never does anything. At this rate my wk will get prohib and then it’ll get registered right after. I’m understanding why no one does this it’s way too painful

Um, how did your WK180 become restricted? Change barrel? Did you get it verified?
Runkle of the Bailey addresses your law hack in one of his videos. Essentially if you have to ask the question the answer is no.

I made a post of my build if you check my profile I go into it more. And fair rule of thumb. Better to not risk it even if there is a loophole on some laws anyways. I really don’t desire a conversation with the cops over firearm laws anyways

Hi everyone, after many years if delaying getting my PAL I went and did the course. Submitted online on April 17th. I understand there is a wait of 28 days. someone i know in the same area got it back in 5 weeks. I still have no update on the webpage it just said "Application successfully summited." Called CFO office 2-3 weeks ago and it says its in the final stages they'll call me if they need anything. I want to hunt Grouse in the fall and need to take a hunters course but dont want to spend money if i haven't been approved. My record is squeaky clean and I was never sad when my goldfish died so I should be good there. I haven't gotten a phone call and niether have my references.
Anything I can do or just hurry and wait? What are others seeing for wait time?

My range membership expired so I got the silvercore one now but as I was looking at my account I saw “RCMP/ATT LETTER” I wanted to know this isn’t the actual ATT letter right ? Hi,
Had the fortune to buy a CZ BREN 2 NR (18.6) and she is coming soon.
I was suggested to go with Nanuk, which looks like a sweet place to look for one. I just don't know which case to go for exactly. I'd want one with foam to cut out for the magz, the optic and for her of course.

Looking to buy a soft shell gun case but the one I like doesn’t have the shape of a rifle so I’m wondering how the laws on concealed firearms would work on this? It’s not like a guitar case or anything but I’m wondering if I need to get a patch or label saying “firearm inside” or whatever

It doesn't have to look like a gun, it just can't deliberately be obviously not a gun case.
I know that doesn't help much but consider it like if you're taking a violin case and putting a gun in it, that's illegal, or if you take an office briefcase, that's illegal. But if you take a case sold at a store as a gun case or a generic pelican style case, that's not illegal.
Except those things may also be illegal, if a prosecutor decides they might be.
Frankly if you're getting charged for it, you're in way deeper trouble and there will be many other charges in addition to that one.

Long range shooting in BC
I would like to get into long range shooting, can someone please point me to the right direction?
I have my PAL and only own a glock 19 and some basic gears for indoor range at the moment. I want to know where I can take some courses about long range shooting and what gears I will need.

They will literally walk you through almost every question in the test and explain everything. This test will be more easy than any test you did in high-school. I had some children (young teens) in my class and they all passed with over 90%. You will be just fine

Not hard at all. The course is designed for people with zero prior knowledge or experience with firearms. As long as you pay attention in the class you’ll do fine. The questions are mainly about how to safely handle and clear a firearm (ACTS & PROVE), there’ll be a few about parts of different firearms shown to you in the course too. There’s a written and practical portion of the testing.

The test is probably the easiest part of getting your pal. The waiting after you submit your application is the real pain in the ass.
There are some sample questions online you can practice with.
Tips: if you see a question like “is it safe to……” or “is X and Y interchangeable”, 9/10 it’s false
