is .223 a reasonably good calibre to hunt deer in Ontario?

If it's the only thing you already have, and money is extremely tight, and you're picking well-constructed and heavy-for-calibre bullets, and you have the discipline to keep your shots under 100yds? Sure. It's adequate.

If you're buying a rifle intentionally with deer hunting in mind? 223 Rem is a bad choice.

At the muzzle, it starts off barely above the minimum power needed to reliably and humanely take a deer. By 75-100yds, it's dropped below that *KE *floor.

tl;dr it's at the bottom end of adequate. If you haven't bought yet, buy something else.

I’m more wanting it for target shooting as a beginner but if the opportunity to hunt arises I’d like to be able to do that too.

Sure. Show me a deer and under 100 yards I’ll drop it with Barnes 85 grain. With our 18.5 barrels.

Deer can be hunted with shotguns, crossbows, compound bows, and recurve bows. I wouldn't recommend a flat bow.

From experience 100 yards is going to be a difficult shot though. I have shot at 90m and put arrows in the ten ring. Not often.

I understand the deer can be hunted in some states with handguns, and I have heard the legends of knife and spear hunters.
