Full timeline for the curious (Ontario)
- February 6, 2022: Completed CFSC and CRFSC
- March 1, 2022: Received results from FSESO
- March 2, 2022: Sent in PAL/RPAL Application to RCMP
- March 7, 2022: Application delivered via Canada Post
- June 1, 2022: Credit Card Charged
- June 30, 2022: License Issued
- July 13, 2022: License Mailed
- July 19, 2022: License Received

For anyone wondering after getting their first restricted, the new license card showed up 2 days after getting the registration (today, 22 July 22). Thankfully, these don't seem to be caught in the new PAL queue.

They recieved my application march 30th, i had some missing info which i updated on the phone, now the browser says Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. lets see how long mail takes. im Ontario btw

It'll be probably another 3 to 4 weeks. When they issue your license, it still needs to be printed. Mine was issued June 28th. Called on the 15th and was told my card was mailed off on the 13th of July. That's probably what your looking at. Annoying as shit but we're at the end of the backlog shitstorm. Congrats on the license.

Neither if you will need to do anything. Once you get a transfer notice via email you can either pick up your gun or it will be shipped to you. Make sure to forward a copy of the transfer notice to the business as they haven’t been getting them all.
Since it’s your first you will get a new RPAL in the mail in 2-3 weeks hopefully immediately followed or preceded by your guns registration. Once you get that you can take it to a range.
B.C. Will have to provide range details, Alberta won’t. It’s a provincial thing. Ontario and Alberta don’t require active range memberships.

For Alberta, you'll need to call the CFO's office and let them know that you plan to shoot on a drop in basis, and tell them what range you are planning to shoot at. You don't need an actual membership anymore.

I did too yesterday since its the first time they are back in stock. First time buyer in that gun shop too but I already bought from other online store. Likely they will ask for the scan of your range membership card if your province CFO require it (I do in Qc). After that they will sent you the refence number and you will have to wait till your province CFO process the transfert.

Hey guys does anyone know of any crown land near the GTA area good enough for longrange shooting? I'm not expecting 500m or anything but ideally >= 100m would be great. EESA isn't accepting any members right now so a little heart broken I can't break in my new CTR...

Get the Ihunter app and pay for the subscription! It will show you all crown land, where you can and can't shoot! If you can hunt there you can shoot there, as long as it's safe.

This is not true. The Marlborough forest near Ottawa allows hunting, but not target shooting. It's a total mess figuring out what you're allowed and not allowed to do.

I was cleaning my Winchester SXP barrel this afternoon. When I tried to put the barrel on there was this little black bar protruding out on top of the firing pin. I pulled the action back and it fell out. For the life of me I can’t figure out where it’s supposed to do or how exactly it goes back into the gun. Has anyone had experience with this? Thanks in advance.

Initial review completed. Had to check the prescription box for 5 years ago. Any guesses on how long til PAL is issued in Manitoba? My money is on 8 months or so.

July 22, over 2 months after this, still no update. Main CFO told me my application was sent to Ontario CFO, I emailed Ontario CFO and they said they had my application.
Maybe for Christmas I'll get my card

Just received my RPAL in the mail, only a 4.5 month wait (Not complaining).
Am I late to the party? Seems like there's hardly any inventory, although I've only been looking at a few websites.
I was really looking forward to hand gun target practice, and eventually maybe even 3 gun competition.
Are there any recommended sites for the 1st restricted buy?

What makes certain ammo brands/types better than others? Quality control seems like an obvious one but even the same brands have so many different types?
Specifically for .22 LR rifle, what should I be looking for? Thanks

Well I know that copper plated hollow point CCI is one of the few 22lr that will cycle in my 10/22. Other brand CPHP also usually cycle okay. Round nosed lead is a no go - it gets caught during the action.
My understanding is that picking correct 22lr brands and types for your gun is especially important in semi's on account of cycling issues. For bolt action it's really just a matter of what you are using the ammo for.

I found out I need to move in 10 days and have restricted firearms. How screwed am I for getting an ATT since the CFO probably can't be reached on account of being understaffed? What do?How long has it taken others to reach the Ontario CFO via phone? Is it even possible? Do I need to drive to Orillia this week? Will they issue me an ATT if I show up at their office?

Do not show up at their office.
Keep trying to call. If you can't make, then so be it. Change your address online, that will show you are still trying to do your due diligence.

Long time lurker here, first post. My CC was charged 2 days ago. Initial application was April 13th this year. RCMP personal services website shows application passed initial stage. How long should I expect to wait from this point on? What is everyone else’s experience?

Someone please help me find a Mossberg 500 12g in the GTA for a reasonable price. Been looking for over a year and the cheapest I can find is like $550 before tax. Too expensive for what it is but there never seems to be any sales, or any real stock for that matter. The Field/Security Combo is specifically what I've been looking for.

What would you do to a WS MCR out of the box to INCREASE RELIABILITY/DURABILITY. As far as lubricantion or swapping stock parts with aftermarket parts? What would you do to the rifle to make it as dependable as possible.

No. That is your final update. If you don't have your card by now, you should call. It may have been lost in the mail or something. It is typically 2 weeks.

Regarding having a restricted firearm sent to the post office via registered mail - Does anyone know if there's a limit to how much time the post office will hold on to the parcel before pickup?
My issue is that I'm away at work for 6+ weeks at a time, and of course I don't know when the firearm will be sent in the mail. I was going to call the post office in question but they are closed until tomorrow and I want to FOMO on a purchase here...

I would change your address if you haven’t already done so and send an email to the CFO about how many times you have called and when you are moving the firearm to the new house that way if it gets back to you you have done your due diligence and done everything you can to get an ATT.

I just called them during my work hours, I use Bluetooth earbud and redial every 10 min until it connects. Even that takes me at least 1 hour to connect.
It seems to connect easier around 11am.

For people wondering about processing times, my relative (Alberta) submitted their application April 2nd, and sometime this last week the portal finally updated to show it has completed it's initial review. And based on a few people in the last weekly thread, it sounds like they're starting on applications sent in March and early April.

It's normal, when I applied for mine. Non of my references were called either. The only indication you have if they charge your CC.
You can give them a call and see what's going on because sometimes wrongly fill field could stall the whole progress, and they might have send you an notification but failed to see it.
RCMP portal is the key for your status.

Hi all, my first post here - I sent in my RPAL application about a month ago - still says that information doesn’t exist when trying to check the status online. Is something wrong or they are just super backed up? Anyone have recent experience? Thanks!
My issue also is that I sent the envelope in with a tracking number but I lost the receipt with that number. I am sure they received it but like would it make sense to send it in again maybe?

UPDATE: I looked at Canada Gun Nuts and seems like people only see online status after 3 months and timelines for entire process are around 6 months. Not looking very promising.

It can literally take months for them to update your application status online. They're extremely backed up and likely haven't even looked at your application yet.

If you bought may 31st, that store did not send your transfer in a timely manner. I bought may31st, and the store sent mine in around 10am June 1st and I'm 5888xxx. I would be a tad disappointed in that shop if I were you.

I'm interested in purchasing a restricted firearm from gunpost.ca. Since it's restricted, their suggested Canada Post Cost-on-Delivery method doesn't really work, as the transfer would need to be completed before it can be shipped.
Has anyone found/used a reliable online escrow service that supports escrow for firearms? Or, some other safe way to purchase a used restricted firearm to eliminate the risk of a scam on either side?

I'm going to be in Montana soon on a road trip and was thinking of stocking up on ammunition. But other than finding that there is a 5000 round limit I'm having trouble finding further information on it. Does anyone have personal experience or resources?
I wouldn't be buying or transporting a firearm, as much as I would like to. Ammunition only.

Hey guys I’m going for my PAL in a couple weeks and haven’t even held a firearm since I was 12. I was just wondering if there was anything I could do to prepare or any advice you guys could give me. I’m very excited to do it I just don’t want to go in completely over my head.

80% of the course is just going to be drilling ACTS and PROVE into your head.
ACTS
- Assume every firearm is loaded.
- Control the muzzle direction at all times.
- Trigger finger must be kept off the trigger and out of the trigger guard.
- See that the firearm is unloaded - PROVE it safe.
PROVE
- Point the firearm in the safest available direction.
- Remove all ammunition.
- Observe the chamber.
- Verify the feeding path.
- Examine the bore.
ACTS is easy peasey. Just be mindful of where your fingers are and where you have a firearm pointed at all times. You can practice with a nerf/airsoft/etc if you have one. PROVE is easy too, but while its steps change the same, how you actually do each can vary depending on the action type of the firearm (bolt, pump, break, lever, semi-auto...) 10% of the course will be learning those different action types. The other 10% will be understanding the basic components of a cartridge/shell, and transportation/storage laws.
Your instructors want you to pass, so take advantage of their time to ask any questions you have, and make use of their example firearms to practice ACTS/PROVE. As long as you don't point the firearm in an unsafe direction then you should pass.

just listen well to your instructor, remember to keep your finger off the trigger and don't go flashing people and you'll be fine, if anything go in understanding ACTS and PROVE. I had some one in my class who's never touched/been around a firearm and they did really well.

1st post for me. I have lurked for a while.
I live in New Brunswick, I have my PAL and wanted to upgrade to an RPAL but there has not been a RPAL in NB for about 3 years.
I managed to attend an RPAL course in Nova Scotia on July 16, 2022.
I completed the PAL/RPAL application and sent it to the Miramichi, NB processing center via Xpress Post this afternoon.
I will update this comment with the timeline I experience.
1) When my letter is received by the centre.
2) when the centre shows various stages of my application on the website.
3) When my credit card is charged.
4) When I actually get the card.

I took my CFSC in Nova Scotia in 2019 and recieved my PAL in 2020. I recently took the CRFSC in Ontario and recieved my CRFSC report from FSESO.
Im filling in the 5592e for a restricted, it asks me to attach the report for both the CFSC AND CRFSC. Do I need to attach proof of my CFSC if I currently have a PAL? I don't have a copy of my old CFSC report since I sent it in my original PAL application. I dont think Nova Scotia gave me more than 1.
Am I shit out of luck?

Concerned about the handgun freeze looming in the air.
I'm planning on purchasing a Kriss Vector SRB 9mm in a couple months. Is it classified as a handgun or rifle? I just want to be ahead of getting it, incase it is classified a handgun and the handgun freeze does come in the future.

Most stores online have an okay selection of new handguns, though the prices have definitely gone up since the announcement. I've had better luck going into smaller stores and buying consignments from older owners who have been selling their guns off for lower prices. Unfortunately I don't live east of the GTA so I can't specifically point you to one store.

I saw one for $599 on sale so I was tempted, a quick glance at several reviews on American site saying the reliability has been mixed and build quality not that great for Walther P22.
I think I would go with Ruger SR22 or Ruger Mark IV series since they have lots positive reviews and probability more coverage on YouTube for channels to cover.

Has anyone mailed in their restricted transfers?
My father transferred all of his restricted firearms into my name, we mailed in the application in the end of May due to the phone lines being full. Was I supposed to receive a reference number in the mail? Or am I just flying blind waiting for the letter in the mail?

So I’m taking my non-restricted course here in a few weeks and am wondering if there’s any tips/things I should do for me to pass the written exam. I hear that it’s more about common sense but I just want to make sure I am prepared in advance to pass the test. Thanks

I found alot of them to be common sense stuff, pay attention to what they teach you. if I remember right there were some about ACTS and PROVE, types of cartridges, cartridge interchangeability and some storage and law stuff, there's 4 diffrent tests I believe so I can only speak for the one I did, pretty sure about half the question is multiple choice and the other is True and false. make sure you read tge question well, they throw in some mind games. I answered all the ones I was confident in, hoping that they would be enough tk get me a pass, then answered my less confident one. just take your time, don't sweat it and pay attention in the class. hope that helps and good luck

Hello all. I am moving to Alberta from BC and everything is happening pretty last minute. I mailed my ATT application and also sent a PDF of the same application to the BC CFO email today, July 20/2022
I am moving from BC to Alberta on Aug 01. When I call the CFO phone number nobody ever picks up or gives a call back prompt. I tried about 20 times today.
What are the odds I receive my ATT in 11 days? Can I go to their office in person and get it faster?
What if I don't get the ATT in time, what should I do, anybody have any options or been in this situation before?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am a little stressed out about it, and moving provinces is already a fairly big task. Thanks!

They should email you the ATT. I'd say keep calling. It's frustrating, I know, but they're super swamped right now so patience is key. Took me like 30 calls to get through, and on hold for a long time too. It's like you gotta spend a day or afternoon trying. Not sure what the BC CFO extension is but if you know that call it directly instead of waiting for a generic CFP rep.

Iv been a pal holder for about 7 years now, and held memberships to the couple ranges around my city (regina,sk). It's been a while since iv been able to shoot and I'm not really looking to get another membership as I'm just not to avid of a shooter upon other reasons. Does anyone in the regina sk area know of good crown land to shoot on. Not opposed to a good commute in any direction either. Thanks everyone

What are some good online sites to start looking for "relatively" cheap rifles, I'm aware the SKS is ever popular but I both don't know where to look or what to look up when trying to find it. A follow up to this being what are some popular COM-block weapons (once again besides the SKS and variants) that are legal and that I won't have to get into a bidding war over.

So I got my first ever gun. SIG Sauer P320 M17 which I just posted here and I remember from the RPAL courses that you need to get a trigger lock but a gun safe is not mandatory. Is getting a gun safe highly recommended? I think an additional lock for the case is enough. I just don't have enough space to keep a safe in my house.

Just a bit if gun care advice, since others have answered the storage question already.
If you keep a firearm in a hard case for storage you may want to invest $10 in a gun sock. The foam of the case will absorb oils and hold moisture which may discolor bits of the coating that the foam points touch.

Looking for some help as I'm having some problems with my 1911.
Took it to the range this weekend, and to my disappointment, it seems to be shooting about 4 inches low at 10m. Can dovetail sights be adjusted for vertical or do I just have to replace them? Or should I not bother and just get the slide drilled for an optic?

I ordered from firearms outlet Canada and they couldn't even provide me a reference number because it would take too much time to find it. They have "hundreds and hundreds of gun cards". But they told me it's definitely been submitted 🤷♂️

Same store for me and same answer lol, Tenda gave it to me the next day. They told me over the phone it would take over an hour to find my reference number.

Had a local gun store tell me the CFO is telling the stores to stop asking people to call the office, so I'm guessing that's the reason they aren't giving the reference numbers out. They are just lying to you since the CFO doesn't want people calling to check.
I called FOC and they knew who I was and what my orders were just from the caller ID without me giving them any info, which means they have a good CRM. No company that is using software like that takes an hour to look up something as critical as a reference number.

It was just that there was a story, I can't remember if it was here or on CGN that, apparently, they order a something but never got the reference number. Called FOC 2 weeks later, only to find out there is an inventory error so it was never submitted in the first place.
At the end, they refund him the money, but that was the 2 weeks he could have ordered it from somewhere else to make up for the lost time and tie up on the credit card.

Many stores are good at given you a reference number so you know, it's in que.
I know FOC kind of keep the customers in the dark sometimes.
