Quick question. Do I have to bring paper gun registration with gun every time when I go to the range? Can I just have a photocopy?

Do you know if the RCMP lists anywhere that it is okay to make copies? Their website only mentions lamination. I was hoping to get a few copies made for such backup, but my local print shops consider them to be legal documents and won't make any copies unless they can find some kind of permission that it is allowed.

I think best practice is the original should move around with the gun and copies stay behind for your records.

I wondered about this too... it seems unlikely this is true. The use of copies seems so widespread, if the original was required, somebody would have been charged by now.

I don't even know how a cop would be able to determine if it was original at the roadside. The cert is not any kind of special printing. There are no security features. It's just a laser print on 24# paper.

I agree with you overall, but I’ve heard safest is to have the original with you with the gun so your ass is fully covered just in case some stickler is after you. If it were ever lost then the gun would also be lost and you’d be falling back to a copy stored at home.

Yeah... problem is at this point I don't even know how I could detect the original from the copies anymore.

The whole situation is so fucking ridiculous. I could go to jail, because I'm carrying the genuine photocopy of the registration papers for the handgun I legally own, and only a forensic analysis could tell the difference, rather than the original laser printed version that are in my safe.

That's like the purest definition of ridiculous Canadian gun laws.

Oh I know this already. But the local print shops don't, and per their store policy they want something in writing since they're not going to dedicate their own time trying to call the CFP in order to hear it for themselves. I'm hoping to find it already written down some place official, in the same sense that the RCMP's own website can be used to tell them that they're allowed to laminate it.

(I've also emailed the CFP but have not yet received any answer from them).

Unfortunately I just received an email from the CFP stating:

"Photocopies of your registration are not legal. You always have to have the original document with the firearm."

Typical mixed messaging, but since this is the only response I've received in writing then I guess I'll need to abide by it until I can find some written law on the contrary

Same here, all originals at home, and copies in the case.

I wonder if you can do PDF version and store it on your phone?
