Regarding having a restricted firearm sent to the post office via registered mail - Does anyone know if there's a limit to how much time the post office will hold on to the parcel before pickup?

My issue is that I'm away at work for 6+ weeks at a time, and of course I don't know when the firearm will be sent in the mail. I was going to call the post office in question but they are closed until tomorrow and I want to FOMO on a purchase here...

Sometimes up to 15 days but it can be more or less. Also FYI.... if it's your first R gun and you only have a temporary ATT, you technically are not allowed to pick it up from the post office. However if you already have the long-term ATT, you are within your rights to pick it up.

Oh does that mean it must be sent to my home address then if its my first R gun? Or is there a way to get a long term ATT prior to ownership? TIA

Yes it needs to be sent to your home. Your first (short term) ATT will have strict conditions of address A to address B with no unnecessary stops.

You should receive an email from the rcmp saying the transfer has been completed and that activates your temporary ATT.

Soon (a month for me in BC awhile back) you'll receive a new R/PAL in the mail with new conditions on the backside and that will allow you to pick it up from the post office.

It's a dumb rule, it's complicated and doesn't make sense. Will you be in trouble if you pick it up and get pulled over on the way home? Maybe, maybe not. Just try your best to be a law abiding citizen, go above and beyond the lock requirements and show that you want to be safe and responsible. From what I've seen and heard, that's all an officer will really ask for

This is a misunderstanding of the rules. You are correct that you need to wait for the registration certificate and new PAL card to take your new gun to the range, but the transfer notice specifically said “This is to inform you that your application to register the following firearm(s) has been processed. You may take possession of them now. Your new registration certificate(s) will be sent to you in a separate envelope.”

It is clear that you may pick up the gun from the vendor or post office even before the registration certificate or new PAL card arrives in the mail.

I had to do this before. It worked out, but I am not 100% on the legality of it WRT having an ATT, etc. But I was not going to be able to personally retrieve it for like two months so I didn't have an option.

But yeah, a box is a box until it's opened. In my case my relative knew what it was, and just picked it up after work and went straight home.

That's a post office issue and should ask them. Explain your situation andaybe they can do better.
