Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

187 of 2400 gun shops in Canada participated in the confiscation program

28

u/rastamasta45 Aug 06 '26

Which really really shows you the literal living nightmare the LPC staring at, the stores and the public are not complying, these people by definition are all armed.

Who’s the officers wanting to sign up for the charging marathon??

I know everyone hates to hear this, but there’s only two realities Grandfathering or perpetual amnesty.

There’s no world the LPC can do this, it’s literally the “red line” of ripping the country in half and possibly years of violence.

13

u/EliteDuck Aug 06 '26

Something to keep in mind is many stores are not doing great financially right now, and their hand was forced in order to keep the lights on. I'm sure a lot of those are also boomer-owned mom and pop shops and hunting outfitters, which are typically more against the ownership of tactical rifles than more traditional "kitchen sink" gun stores.

11

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 06 '26

I’m more lenient to stores taking part, but I just posted this because it’s still an abysmal participation rate lol

9

u/Lumindan Aug 06 '26

About 8 percent participation rate? Oof.

4

u/Armed_Accountant Whoever wants to touch my guns has to touch me first. Aug 06 '26

Honestly don't blame stores for participating. They're in the business of making money and dead inventory ain't makin' money.

Individuals on the other hand... Unless it's restricted or a dirt cheap banned 22 (like GSG-16) then zero excuse for participating.

12

u/Lumindan Aug 06 '26

Unless it's restricted or a dirt cheap banned 22 (like GSG-16) then zero excuse for participating.

I'd only give restricted folks a pass and even then, only if they delayed it.

Cheap 22s still give public safety the optics and stats they're fishing for.

Mass non compliance all the way for me personally. I'd rather deactivate than support this shit show

5

u/Natural_Comparison21 Aug 07 '26

Yep. I would rather deactivate everything and have paper weights then legitimatize this fundamentally bad program.

That’s exactly what it means

26

u/rastamasta45 Aug 06 '26

So like….did the Quebec shooting just get memory holed and an officer domed a civilian just get let off….like that story’s done eh?

18

u/Lumindan Aug 06 '26

Yep. Same with the shooting in BC.

My guess is that it's optically not viable (the whole firearms only in the hands of the law argument went out the window).

That and Carney and the Liberals are still polling well so they don't need to beat the same dead horse (I also suspect they don't want to shine a light on the scc stuff because that also hurts their platform).

13

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

Cop killings usually seem to get memory holed. Mayerthorpe and Moncton are never brought up. Both happened under liberal and conservative governments too

10

u/Beneficial-Ride-4475 Aug 07 '26

I don't know about memory holed, but there certainly has been crickets lately.

For any updates/bad news for us, we will have to wait until October.

3

u/bobotea Aug 07 '26

Where are you seeing that the officer got fired? Cant find any news on that

An article came out today saying the officer did not in fact shoot the guy, my eyes showed me something else with that video.

3

u/Brapika Aug 12 '26

Don't trust your lying eyes, citizen. The state will provide everything you need to believe.

46

u/Unknownuser010203 Aug 04 '26

Some of you seem to forget, we're not dealing with pragmatists or economists who are looking for a way out of the bans. We are dealing with authoritarians seeking to disarm the population. They aren't just going to wash there hands of it, even if given the perfect way out.

21

u/22GageEnthusiast Aug 04 '26

You also seem to forget that there's vastly more law abiding civilian gun owners in Canada than there are active duty police officers and military. They can barely deal with people owning guns illegally anyways.

21

u/WeightedDips95 Aug 04 '26

I think he was addressing the smoothbrains that think Carney is different

6

u/yummybunnybear Aug 08 '26

I don't get why people think Carney would be different. The confiscation program was dragging for 5 years under Trudeau and it started rolling with Carney in charge. I'm sure part of those 5 years were spent on bs feasibility studies and "consultations" but Carney is doing more to seize the guns than Trudeau ever did.

13

u/Unknownuser010203 Aug 04 '26

I haven't forgotten anything. Just because it's impossible to enforce doesn't mean they'll give up.

14

u/Lumindan Aug 04 '26

We just have to keep holding the line. Its a slow and long battle.

Get more people involved to increase pal numbers.

And most of all, shoot what we have as much as we can to support the local businesses and culture.

20

u/BigKrocuta Aug 04 '26

Even if all the SCC case does is stop the usage of OIC for bans/regulation it would already be a huge victory since any further ones would have to take time and attention away from the government's other legislative priorities. Imagine the attacks when they go after guns when pretty much everything else in Canada is more important in the eyes of voters.

Plus having them in the public debate for weeks or months gives time for us to show our opposition and gives them the opportunity to make some more gaffes that show how unserious this all is. What they want is the possibility of taking us all by surprise at any time with no warning, to present us with new arbitrary rules without debate or publicity. I hope this ends once and for all next year.

11

u/Lumindan Aug 04 '26

Imagine the attacks when they go after guns when pretty much everything else in Canada is more important in the eyes of voters.

It certainly would set the standard for property ownership and help define the capabilities of the government. If we lose, it's an incredibly slippery slope imo.

Unfortunately most Canadians aren't aware of this information or choose to remain ignorant. I can guarantee you they'll roll out the "x party wants guns on the streets ads" when they need the wedge.

Plus having them in the public debate for weeks or months gives time for us to show our opposition and gives them the opportunity to make some more gaffes that show how unserious this all is

Sadly with a majority they can bum rush an amendment through without much stopping them. It would eat some house time but we've seen how the Liberals are currently using their majority (shutting down debate and denying transparency).

I do hope more people become aware of the issue though.

What they want is the possibility of taking us all by surprise at any time with no warning, to present us with new arbitrary rules without debate or publicity. I hope this ends once and for all next year.

My guess is if they lose they'll bulk ban via amendment to c21 or an omnibus, then they'll offer grandfathering without usage to build a backdoor registry and try to divide the community (again).

The only way it ends is with a different government in power, implementing proper simplified classification codified in the law.

18

u/Agonizing-Stroke1812 Aug 05 '26

Imagine the attacks when they go after guns when pretty much everything else in Canada is more important in the eyes of voters

This is literally what they did and they got rewarded with a majority

23

u/RydNightwish Aug 05 '26

Correction. They got a minority. Thier lack of respect for the ballot combined with MPs of loose morals, let them manipulate thier way to a majority without the peoples mandate.

17

u/WeightedDips95 Aug 05 '26

Erm, sweatie… didn’t you know that a PM strong arming his way to a majority through back room deals is a defining feature of Canadian DemocracyTM???!

You MAGAt chuds need to take a grade 1 civics class

19

u/Lumindan Aug 11 '26

Wrong bear killed by RCMP after girl attacked in Maple Ridge, B.C.

You can't make this shit up. Good ol rcmp. Bears, barns, fire halls and civilians lol.

11

u/Reasonable_Hall2346 Aug 12 '26

At least it was still a bear. Half expecting they shot up a homeless dude.

1

u/noobte Aug 14 '26

it was a homeless man named bear

7

u/Natural_Comparison21 Aug 11 '26

And don’t forget the entrapment. They got a nasty case of entrapping people. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/john-nuttall-amanda-korody-2018-1.4952431

17

u/rastamasta45 Aug 07 '26

Larry Brock resigned from parliament, big oof for us, dude was amazing at grilling the demented chipmunk

17

u/IAMURBUNKLE Aug 07 '26

Hate to say it but the conservative bench does not have enough star power to be considered a credible government in waiting. Carney is going to sell his small wins like stronger jobs numbers and whatever pathetic deal he gets by bowing down to Trump. Either way, liberals are going to win again in ‘29 and after that too. It’s going to be a long 20 years.

20

u/rastamasta45 Aug 07 '26

It’s legit hilarious how much he’s conceding, and the Canada sub eat it up like the good cucks they are. Concession after concession and they’re like “Carney is looking out for us” eat the slop.

What a joke

13

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 07 '26

We’re an extremely weak and pathetic nation alright lol no clue how anyone could be proud of this place

13

u/RydNightwish Aug 07 '26

Today he talks about givig up booze bans and is called smexy and pragmatic.

Last week they would have lynched pierre for saying the same thing.

3

u/Late_Winner6859 Aug 08 '26

Last week? That plankton can probably do it in the same sentence!

(If it’s given to them by propaganda, of course. It’s not like they can string together a complicated thought themselves)

8

u/GinnAdvent Aug 08 '26

So basically, the liberals are still chipping away of what little we have and the public still applauding him for it? What will it take to get people to realize that it's really no different from JT?

7

u/Natural_Comparison21 Aug 08 '26

Unironically for the economy to reach a point of depression era levels but even then that’s highly unlikely as they can end up blaming someone else.

10

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 08 '26

Carneys in a perfect spot. No matter what happens the stupid fucks in this country will put all the blame on Trump

1

u/Dill_Pickle_Tears Aug 12 '26

Seems like there’s a big divergence between left leaning voters. Many dislike a lot of what his government has been doing so far this year.

Seems like it’s not affecting his approval rating and there’s no opposition that can really step up yet and be hard hitting enough.

Sucks because you can tell much of the liberal “austerity” cutting and pragmatism is actually just ham fisted, pro-corporate BS. It’s why there are liberal MPs under Carney resigning

2

u/Dill_Pickle_Tears Aug 12 '26

Small chance that LPC lose their majority if all - like 9? - by-elections go accordingly. The three this August would require 1 loss of a previously liberal seat (I.e., 2 LPC, 1 con -> 2 con, 1 LPC post election) and then the following elections in the fall would require one loss as well.

Like a 7% chance but still a chance. At least partly limits their ability to pass bills

Tumbler Ridge documents reveal school shooter was ‘obsessed’ with guns

So Global news just said the BC Tumbler Ridge shooter is obsessed with firearms but then redacted many other crucial information and facts regarding to the whole event.

So besides trying to paint firearms as evil instruments of doom, they also hide many facts that create more questions than answers?

14

u/FunkyFrunkle Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26

Because it’s Global news. They’ve been one of the worst news agencies when it comes to anything gun related, they tend to be very lopsided.

10

u/Beneficial-Ride-4475 Aug 13 '26

Fear mongering is standard practice in western nations, without it, how are news outlets supposed to make their money?

In all seriousness though, while I don't know the motivations behind the wording of the articles headline (other than it's supposed to be attention grabbing). I do know it's going to negatively affect the reputation of every gun owner in the country.

As for why we have redactions and the models of the guns haven't been released, I think it's because the authorities in charge of the investigation don't want to cause a panic. I'd bet good money the guns used are either conventional/traditional firearms that hunters and trappers all around the country use, or, they were homemade/3D printed guns.

The most recent CBC article mentioned that the authorities are also concerned about copycats, and I personally think that's legit. Better to keep mum for now imo.

We probably won't know anything more for now, save that articles like this are only going to otherize us further.

8

u/GinnAdvent Aug 13 '26

Hence the news title paint a narrative that guns are bad, and anyone that has them for any reasons are deemed "obsessed" with firearms.

This is the type of negative connotation is what Liberals wants the average voters to associate with when they use it as an wedge issue.

Of course we got no transparency, and the whole thing is being used for political agenda like the Nova Scotia event back in 2020.

15

u/Red_Shrinp556 Aug 13 '26

Not that most of you care, but a large part of the U.S. NFA was knocked down by a federal court, meaning SBR’s, SBS’s, and suppressors no longer need registration or paperwork in most of the country now. Feels cool to be afforded the freedoms that Canadian’s had long before the Americans.

11

u/FunkyFrunkle Aug 13 '26

Anything the U.S. does, Canada likes to do the opposite. What’s good for you guys ends up being inevitable bad news for us.

13

u/rastamasta45 Aug 14 '26

Bingo, Canada will double down on bans and proudly state “we’re not Americans and never will be so we need more bans” while our quality of life deteriorates further

2

u/Red_Shrinp556 Aug 13 '26

I hope you guys get relief one day, at least you guys can still ride the Norinco gravy train, imports to the U.S. have been banned since the 90’s.

9

u/FunkyFrunkle Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 14 '26

I appreciate the sentiment.

The Norinco gravy train isn’t even worth riding anymore. The only thing of any decent quality and value that Norinco made outside of their SKS rifles that was actually worth owning was their M-14 rifles which were made on tooling directly from Springfield that was sold to the Chinese.

M-14 rifles are banned now. The only guns left from Norinco that we can actually still buy with the exception of the SKS are garbage quality bolt action rifles and rough as hell shotguns that are easily surpassed by other options on the market for not much more money.

5

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 14 '26

No relief until trumps outta office and then, only maybe

2

u/TKB-059 bc Aug 13 '26

Norinco makes actual dogshit for the most part, you're genuinely not missing anything. I have friends in yurope, even their AKM's are trash now.

3

u/Red_Shrinp556 Aug 14 '26

Type 56’s were legal before they were banned a few years back right? Could you at least get imports for those at that time?

3

u/TKB-059 bc Aug 14 '26

The SKS? Still legal. The AK variant was imported when it was non prohib, but the current crop of Chinese AKM's that can be bought in Europe are typically bottom of the barrel.

They don't really sell the premo quality AK's anymore like they did in the 90s.

8

u/I-LOVE-HENRY-RIFLES Aug 14 '26

Probably be grounds to ban more shit. The Canadian identity is how unamerican one can be. The less American the more Canadian you are. Bonus points if you scream elbows up and maple MAGA.

14

u/Tommy_Kase Aug 04 '26

With the upcoming Supreme Court hearing, I hope at least the pistol sale freeze will be removed (is it even the same thing or is the hearing only for the infamous "assault style" weapon ban? I didn't follow for a while)

23

u/New-Replacement-2352 Aug 04 '26

Handgun freeze is separate from the bans. The outcome of the court case won’t change anything in regards to the handgun freeze.

8

u/Tommy_Kase Aug 04 '26

Aw man

7

u/New-Replacement-2352 Aug 04 '26

Yeah it sucks, I didn’t get my RPAL until just after they froze handguns and banned the p90, among others :(

16

u/Lumindan Aug 04 '26

Unfortunately the handgun stuff is locked in with c21 which was passed through the house.

If the scc ruling is in our favor, we'd potentially see ARs and everything that got name banned via oic back on the table (aka all the pccs).

Handguns would require an amendment in the house which won't happening anytime soon given the current government

3

u/kookiemaster Aug 06 '26

It would still be progress, and kind of ironic, though poly would lose their minds if suddenly ARs became non-prohibited.

3

u/fyfnw Aug 11 '26

You get what you accept. The firearms community can't just sit back and accept the handgun freeze. We have to keep chipping away at the government the same way they chip away at our community. If we keep the pressure up we can at least reclaim some territory until a less-brain-dead government gets into power and hopefully reverses it.

28

u/rastamasta45 Aug 06 '26

Hey guys I’m totally a Canadian gun owner (points to my one airsoft rifle) but you guys need to see that carney is our best shot against maga and pp because he’s so smart and amazing. Sure he passed a spy bill but pp would have passed it but worse. Sure our economy is collapsing and it doesn’t seem to get better but it’s Harpers fault. I really really really believe in democracy which is why I’m so happy about the back room deals that took an elected minority to a back room deal majority. You can’t even email or call these mps as they’ve shut down all communication since the deals, what an amazing democracy!

So guys please it’s okay to be legally robbed of your property while the criminals now have an easier target to do unimaginable harms to you and your loved ones, he’s the hero we deserve!

16

u/WeightedDips95 Aug 06 '26

All these dumb dumbs didn’t even know that like totally everybody “votes for the person, not the party”!!!!

That’s why we needed explicit confirmation that Marylin Gladue renounced her previously held problematic beliefs that got her elected and would vote in line with the LPC.

God you guys are so stupid for not realizing this!

12

u/I-LOVE-HENRY-RIFLES Aug 06 '26

Who cares if we can’t buy food or homes? At least we are owning the maple MAGA conservatives!!! Ban all guns!!!

12

u/Rusty_Stahlhelm Mod's Alt. Account Aug 12 '26

Welp, my u/Cre_AK47 account is no more after being smacked Reddit admins for "soliciting transactions of dangerous controlled good/weapons". We're going to be looking at changes to rule 6. Admins are completely fucking useless and "restarted". We're getting tired of this.

7

u/Lumindan Aug 13 '26

I wonder if it's just malicious reports or if the auto sweeping reddit does is just hot trash.

7

u/Rusty_Stahlhelm Mod's Alt. Account Aug 13 '26

I personally think it's a little bit of both. We have one person who continuously reports anything with a price as a violation of rule 6 and irrespective if it's true or not, that's still gets the attention of admins. Anywho jokes on them... I'm still here!

11

u/Dill_Pickle_Tears Aug 07 '26

Is the Canadian Taxpayers Federation now approved to be an intervenor? An article posted here earlier in the week mentioned they were denied but it’s unsubstantiated as there’s no information on this anywhere else.

Their arguments were some of the more interesting as they were focusing on the “variant” language as well as the financials of the buyback

17

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

Ya, they’re in. The attorney general of Canada approved everyone that put in to intervene

11

u/Reasonable_Hall2346 Aug 10 '26

Any truth around the rumor that 1-800-Got Junk is the disposing “agency” for the firearm “buyback program”

12

u/rastamasta45 Aug 10 '26

I just saw this too, if true this should be another massive controversy, because they’re not licensed to handle firearms nor do they have a security clearance. This is a nightmare waiting to happen

1

u/waitwhatnothing Aug 13 '26

I saw someone say in the comments of the CCFR post on Facebook that got junk was disposing of uncontrolled (ie not receiver, barrel or magazine) parts only. No idea if that’s true but it makes slightly more sense.

10

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 10 '26

Mario of the north or whatever? He also said he heard carney was scrapping the confiscation back in like October. I’d take anything he says with a grain of salt

2

u/Reasonable_Hall2346 Aug 10 '26

Yeah and reposted by the CCFR. It’s why i was wondering if anyone else has head of things.

3

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 10 '26

They also reposted the carney thing lol

6

u/New-Replacement-2352 Aug 10 '26

3

u/Reasonable_Hall2346 Aug 10 '26

A few IG posts about it.

So is the SA80 legal in Canada? And would the Murdoch and Co. clone be legal in Canada?

8

  > wanting a clone (ie garbage) of a garbage gun

This SA ban got anons down BAD 😆😆🥵🥵

2

u/Due-Candidate4384 Aug 09 '26

Well first of all why would they copy the flaws in their reproduction? That’s fucking stupid. But my question was only whether it would be legal, not whether it would be good. Can you answer that por favor?

2

u/Lumindan Aug 10 '26

Armalytics would help.

2

u/Old-Selection-1012 Aug 10 '26

Just Goolged the rifle. Looks fine to me. You're good to go 👍

15

u/Luci716 Aug 07 '26

I am so disheartened with everything in the Canadian fire arms space. I have been waiting a year for my license. All the ones I wanted on gunpost or tenda have long sold. Its annoying knowing if I lived a few hours south I would be rolling a long time ago

5

u/Natural_Comparison21 Aug 07 '26

I am guessing you have called the CFO?

3

u/Luci716 Aug 09 '26

Yes, called, emailed, MP, everything. I have been waiting for an "area fire arms review officer" for 4 months

4

u/Natural_Comparison21 Aug 09 '26

3

u/Luci716 Aug 09 '26

Yes, At least the team in Orillia a few times

3

u/FunkyFrunkle Aug 12 '26

Why does anyone need privacy?

Too many wrongdoers hide behind the universal veil that privacy provides.

Those who demonstrate an actual need for privacy should be the only people who obtain it.

It is for the greater good.

You don’t need anything.

/s

5

u/Natural_Comparison21 Aug 13 '26

“But that's a bad faith argument okay. Privacy can't get up and kill you okay. Privacy was not designed to kill people." This is unironically the argument you will hear as anti gunners miss the point. The point being if the government and society is comfortable with controlling one thing that people don't 'need' then they will start to become really comfortable with controlling other aspects of our day to day life. Now some people could argue "What about the charter?" What about it? The government can just ram through a bill that has section 33 through it and for 5 years they can suppress our freedom of concise and religion, freedom of expression, freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of association. They can also suppress our right to life, liberty and security of the person. Search and seizure, Arbitrary dentition. Pretty much all our really important rights and freedoms can be held at the whim of the government. But hey that's no problem. It's not like the literal CCLA has called it dangerous to us all. You know the organization that has been around since 1964 and actively is a watchdog about protecting our liberates? Yea no must just be some bleeding hearts.

11

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 13 '26

Man, I absolutely can’t stand that country

6

u/FunkyFrunkle Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26

Why stop at paranoid, prophylactic gun control laws and just have everyone retroactively arrested until they can prove a “need” to not be incarcerated?

6

u/InitialAd4125 Aug 13 '26

I can't tell which one you're referring to and I agree in both cases. Like Japan I'm more pissed at America because they could have restructured them to be like Switzerland but instead made a easy to control puppet.

11

I’ve said it before, people are quick to point to countries like Japan and Australia when they could instead point to countries like Finland, the Czech Republic or Switzerland where everyone more or less gets what they want with the same results.

Japan has centuries worth of civilian disarmament stretching back to the 1500’s with the great “sword hunt”. They literally drafted disarmament laws as a means to keep the hierarchy in place because the peasants wouldn’t stop revolting. So, they decreed that nobody could own a sword or a gun.

Japans disarmament laws were not rooted in public safety or in good faith, they’re rooted in oppression. This is something that should be brought up the next time someone tries to wax lyrical about Japans gun control regime. It was never about public safety, it was about public control. It was literally the upper echelons of Japanese society decreeing that only people of the highest standing and the military could own weapons.

This is like saying North Korea is the gold standard because they don’t allow civilian firearm ownership. While Japan is definitely NOT comparable North Korea in any way, the initial motivation for the disarmament laws are the exact same and it’s not public safety.

Japan has a long and complex history of societal oppression, and horrific human rights abuses up to WW2. Ask the legions of people who were tortured and killed by the ruling class how “safe” they felt that nobody was allowed to own weapons.

People act like Japan is and always was some fucking magical, progressive utopia and I genuinely do not understand where the fuck this comes from. Japan does have a unique and vibrant culture and went on to contribute a lot of wonderful things to the world, but their gun control regime isn’t one of those things. People seriously need to pick up and read a fucking history book if they want to stop looking like simps for oppression.

Australia used to be a penal colony and hunting is seen as a “bogan” (redneck/hillbilly) past time and pest control. There also seems to be a much broader anti-gun consensus in Australia.

The whole “prove a need” thing is also pointless in Canada because we’re well past the point where something like that is even feasible. For one thing, it creates a huge issue concerning the guns that are already owned. With the vast majority of them being non-restricted, there’s no registry to prove who has what and therefore, it’s unenforceable. Not only that, but if they’re struggling to get support (and the guns they already banned) across most of the country, then trying to buy back all of the “unjustified” guns is practically impossible.

Gun control activists routinely point to these countries as the “GoLd StAnDaRd” while conveniently ignoring that these countries do not share Canada’s logistical, cultural, economic, geographical and political realities. They try to hand-wave these issues off as simple fixes when in reality we’re witnessing something comparatively smaller in scope take place and to the surprise of nobody it’s falling apart.

Only a handful of municipalities are taking part. Other provinces outright refused and passed laws. Multiple police forces have refused. It’s going to the Supreme Court. For a country that supposedly loves gun control, it’s certainly not going very well for the gun-control crowd.

Yeah far to many people glaze Japan because of good public transit and shit when in reality it's not all that great.

3

u/Natural_Comparison21 Aug 13 '26

Also Australia still has people getting guns. See homemade guns seized in Australia. It makes Canadas look small.

u/TKB-059 bc Aug 15 '26

Japan and Australia

My favorite factoid about them that everyone forgets is they're fuckin islands. Canada shares the largest, least secured border in the world with the largest manufacturer, exporter and civilian consumer of firearms in the world.

Giga turbo hopium:

Most of the rules we're familiar with regarding antique firearms are defined by regulation, not the core Firearms Act itself.

A sufficiently based future government could simply amend it by OIC to add something like:

X. Any firearm designed or manufactured before the end of the year 1945.

(Never gonna happen but it's a fun thought experiment about what our laws actually are.)

I was moaning about the antique designation year always being 1898 regardless of how much time passes until someone reminded me that the main issue with having the cut-off year “rubber-band” with the passage of time is that it’s eventually going to include machine guns.

I mean they could put a clause in there to specifically exclude machine guns but the chances of that happening any time soon are non-existent.

11

u/InitialAd4125 Aug 04 '26

There are also caliber restrictions on antique firearms that people seem to forget about. Honestly what I'd prefer be done to the antique firearms act is what's been done to flintlock, wheel lock, and matchlock longarms that any reproduction automatically be classed as a antique firearm because it's frankly absurd that you can own the actual antique but not the reproduction that is just as functional as an antique. Like what the fuck are they afraid of? Pirates?

3

u/yummybunnybear Aug 04 '26

I'm just hoping that when they eventually have laser plasma guns that can be printed in any basement with a 3D printer the government will just give up and designate all old-fashioned gun powder guns as antiques.

It's been incredible observing the leader of the opposition getting the most amount of media criticism since the last federal election rather than the actual prime minister and his government who's been in charge for a year and half (11 years total for the LPC btw). Not to mention that Carney's had a majority since April and yet the media still finds a way to focus the attention on the leader of the opposition.

You can't find any example in a provincial context either where the leader of the provincial opposition party has numerous media hit pieces ran against them. Interesting how this seems to only happen at the federal level in Canada.

It's all so fake/inorganic and IMO it's done to create the context that he's not popular anywhere in Canada. Yet anecdotally you can still see that he's pretty popular based on face to face interactions that he has with the public. Polling anyone under the age of 55 in Canada shows this too.

However, sadly, the media narrative works against him because the number 1 consumer of legacy media in Canada are boomers. They also are the ones that are being heavily oversampled in all the polling. Boomers are still heavily in support of the Liberals and Carney where it's like a 70/30 split.

16

u/Lumindan Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Don't buy into the wave of hit pieces. They're op eds based on polls that don't mean much.

They're rolling out all the stops because the government is taking scrutiny over their own mps stepping down (and some other unsavory business).

The conservatives would gain nothing from decapitating themselves.

Plus if they did swap in a new leader now, all that would do would be to give the other parties time to smear them (people only now paint Otoole as a moderate, he was trump of the north during his era, Scheer ate plenty of mud too).

9

u/Natural_Comparison21 Aug 15 '26

Also people are acting like the LPC are even at there peak. They have not been at there peak in months. Depending on the poll as well a lot of there support comes from the death of the NDP. Now it’s “Will the NDP recover?”

5

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 15 '26

Carneys popularity is consistently in the high 50s. As long as he’s polling high the liberals will be fine. It’s shit lol

6

u/Natural_Comparison21 Aug 15 '26

Yes he himself as a leader is high. Largely he’s being propped up by the 55+ voters. Which damn boomers out here not beating the allegations.

14

u/IAMURBUNKLE Aug 15 '26

You actually think he will step down? Best showing for a conservative in a general election last year, 8+ million votes, pretty rock solid base. They could run Obama against Carney right now and the brain dead liberal followers would still vote against us.

6

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 15 '26

The knives always come out when the polling goes to shit

13

u/I-LOVE-HENRY-RIFLES Aug 15 '26

I hope not. I don’t think I’d ever be bothered to vote then. Only candidate worth voting for (in my opinion) is a pro gun one that gets rid of the current system and replaces it with a better one. And makes suppressors legal. And makes stand your ground laws. And the right to self defence with any “tool” a charter/constitutional right like they did in the Czech Republic.

Hate to say it but IMO the biggest chance would be the NDP making a comeback. Carney has pissed off a lot progressives by shrinking the public service, bailing out rich condo developers, back to work orders on unions, and promising to build pipelines. The issue is people voting for Carney not because they like him but due to fear mongering from the LPC telling potential NDP voters that they’re the lesser of two evils. Oddly enough the NDP somehow winning, however unlikely they would be, would be better for us than another LPC win.

Pierre has a solid base that could otherwise win at least a minority if it weren’t for Carney being able to campaign on Trump/US politics rather than Canadian politics.

Democratic socialists like Lewis are champions of civil rights and in many cases personal property rights. It’s private ownership of the economy socialists tend to criticize or advocate for different arrangements on (public ownership, co-operatives, etc.) not someone’s personal processions.

Owning a gun is not like owning a mine or factory or grocery store.

Guns are the one area where a conservative government migjt be better but Lewis’ ideas on a public option for telecoms, build out of social housing, a wealth tax, improved EI, strong regulation of AI and a public pharmaceutical manufacturer (so we can make cheap generic drugs like Canada actually did a few decades ago) are all good policies.

Democratic socialists like Lewis are champions of civil rights

Maybe so, but I don't think that's a priority for Canadians right now.

and in many cases personal property rights. It’s private ownership of the economy socialists tend to criticize or advocate for different arrangements on (public ownership, co-operatives, etc.) not someone’s personal processions.

Depends of the socialist. For some, the lines of personnel and private property are blurred, at least in discussion.

Guns are the one area where a conservative government migjt be better

At best, Lewis will keep mum about the subject. At worst, he will try and go father than the LPC.

but Lewis’ ideas on a public option for telecoms, build out of social housing, a wealth tax, improved EI, strong regulation of AI and a public pharmaceutical manufacturer (so we can make cheap generic drugs like Canada actually did a few decades ago) are all good policies.

Sure, but I don't think Canadians care about those issues in the way we would like to think they do.

3

That was a big blunder. Still remember that in 2021 and put himself in a precarious position from JTs argument.

But it shouldn't be too hard to defend it now since everyone knows banning guns don't reduce the crime in this country. Relatively speaking.

What are the odds the SCC, if they don’t strike down the bans, forces the government to fully compensate to the tune of billions?

6

u/FunkyFrunkle Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

Virtually zero.

The Supreme Court is bound by the constitution. Canadians do not have constitutionally protected property rights under the charter, thus this question is not within the purview of the Supreme Court.

Property rights were very intentionally omitted under the final draft of the charter in 1981. The Pierre Trudeau government, under consultation with the provinces, left out property rights because they didn’t want it getting in the way of developing natural resources or regulating land use.

The Canadian bill of rights has basic property rights, but it’s a regular statue, not part of the constitution which means the government can bypass it. “Notwithstanding the Canadian bill of rights.” If parliament writes clear, unambiguous language into a statue stating that the property in question will be seized without compensation, they effectively bypass it.

The interesting thing here is parliament didn’t have a chance to work this out because the bans were done by OIC, which is the crux of the Supreme Court case.

The Supreme Court does not have the constitutional authority to essentially rewrite federal law and make the government spend money on the buyback. The CCFR is launching a class action lawsuit against the government on this very subject which will be decided by a lower court, not the Supreme Court.

The case being brought before the Supreme Court is focused around whether or not the bans are even legal, that is, if the government even had the authority to bypass parliament to ban vast swaths of property by executive decree. Three provinces have joined the case as intervenors to argue that these bans represent a “Trojan horse” for federal overreach into provincial jurisdiction.

2

u/InitialAd4125 Aug 17 '26

The more I learn about Canada the more I realize that one of the main creators of this nation being an alcoholic makes a lot of sense.

If Trudeau were still in power he would have banned the SKS by now.

15

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 03 '26

He wouldn’t be in power still though. Poilievre was too effective getting Trudeau to resign. It backfired terribly. Sure, Trudeau went on an insane ban spree, but he was also useless. Constantly delaying the actual confiscation was good for us. This fuck Carney comes in and actually implements it right away basically. A person trying to get out from this would’ve just kept delaying like Trudeau did

5

u/Lumindan Aug 03 '26

No because Trudeau also knew not to poke certain bears and the SKS is one of those items.

The optics nightmare would be insane.

2

u/-rifle-is-fine- Aug 03 '26

I'm not 100% sure the guy apologizing for treatment of Natives would have gone as far as trampling on a common hunting tool.

That would have been a spectacle though!

-3

u/Darthwilhelm on Aug 03 '26

I don't think he's entirely on board with this. Especially considering that the Tumbler Creek shooting was memoryholed like it was. Even if the guns were smuggled in or otherwise illegally procured, that didn't stop the Trudeau administration.

I suspect he's trying to get it over and done with, so that he can maintain Montreal without having to expand the program further than it was.

18

u/Lumindan Aug 03 '26

I don't think he's entirely on board with this. Especially considering that the Tumbler Creek shooting was memoryholed like it was.

Anyone paying attention knew why the government couldn't monopolize that tragedy. Optically bad.

suspect he's trying to get it over and done with, so that he can maintain Montreal without having to expand the program further than it was.

Except the program has accelerated under his tenure. He brought Provost on board.

If anything he could have simply left it in limbo. Instead he's pushed it forward and is burning even more money on it.

10

u/FunkyFrunkle Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

It sure does look to me like he’s spent more time sidestepping and distancing himself from the program than he’s ever spent talking about it.

The only time he really mentioned anything about the program was on the campaign trail when he spoke of “reinvigorating” the buyback, but ever since the election he hasn’t mentioned it especially when asked about measures to prevent violent crime and gun violence. He mentioned border security, he mentioned increased police presence but mentioned nothing about the buyback.

When recently asked about banning the SKS, he totally sidestepped it and just passed the buck to the RCMP.

Trudeau mentioned it every chance he got. Carney avoids it every chance he gets.

Not defending the guy at all, but there’s a clear distinction between Carney and Trudeau when it comes to enthusiasm for this whole thing. I don’t think he’s necessarily positioning himself to scrap it. I can’t see that happening, but what I think is more likely is he’s establishing distance between himself and the program if it ends up falling apart which is not entirely unlikely.

Yes, he has Natalie Provost in there, but the program is facing opposition from provinces, police forces and people which isn’t something legislation or a finger-wagging activist is going to fix.

3

u/-rifle-is-fine- Aug 03 '26

Carney mentioned bail reform after being asked point blank about banning the SKS after the recent Montreal shooting. This is an important response to note for team pro-gun.

6

u/Lumindan Aug 04 '26

Carney has also actively pushed anything unsavory to his MPs to deflect heat. By bit saying nothing himself he keeps people assigning what they want to hear to him.

Take a look at the draconian spy bills. Its all his MPs but you can bet your ass it doesn't fly without the leadership.

Gary and Provost will take the heat for the gun grab, Carney is equally if not more to blame for it.

Not to mention the last couple shootings have all been optically horrible to assign blame to legal firearms owners because there's too much baggage.

18

u/Lumindan Aug 03 '26

I think Mark Carney wants to drop the wasteful confiscation he inherited but doesn't know how the Liberal Party as a whole digs out of this one and says no to Provost without pissing off Quebec.

I've been seeing this posted ever since Trudeau was dropped. Its a weird attempt at trying to paint Carney in a certain light and frankly, it's so off base it's not even funny.

Carney has had every opportunity to drop the program, dozens of free, vote winners but instead he and his party believe that keeping the wagon rolling is worth more. It's clear where he stands, if someone tells you they are something, odds are that's who they are. Every action and word he's taken has been clearly set to maintain the wedge issue (because dropping a free wedge and the illusion of public safety would destroy a liberal government cornerstone).

Carney brought Provost on board, he's platformed her harder than Trudeau has. He's accelerated the program under his tenure.

What solutions would you offer him?

I do not understand why people keep saying Carney wants to drop this, is this some kind of washing to paint him as a friend to firearms? He's absolutely not. So you think Gary and Provost function on their own? They are beholden to the leadership.

He doesn't care about our solutions because they know what both ends entail, they aren't stupid. They know actually addressing crime and the border would be a herculan task and that it would be admitting they've been dicking around for decades.

His solution is the same as the previous leaders, keep the ball rolling and bust it out when they need a good pr swing. He's not secretly praying this fails.

Absolutely ridiculous take.

Why do people so enthusiastically try to insert their hopes onto someone who's actively carving away their freedoms and quality of life?

13

u/RydNightwish Aug 03 '26

Realistically, even in the event of a SCC win, I think the best outcome is either the court forces grandfathering or compensation into the billions. We will never be at the range with the ARs or T81's again and 2029 is so far down the road that its like time to move past the bans.

Now, a complete and baseless theory I have is that maybe a SCC loss translates into it shuffling into some kind of handing it all over to provincial autonomy. The cuts to the public sector and public safety (re:decentralize) in general as well as the push to get provinces involved in more things means maybe he decides to hand it to the provinces. Id also like a pony.

8

u/InitialAd4125 Aug 04 '26

"he cuts to the public sector and public safety (re:decentralize) in general as well as the push to get provinces involved in more things means maybe he decides to hand it to the provinces. Id also like a pony."

Frankly the fact that it isn't just goes to show the absurdity of the government and it's refusal to follow it's own rules after all are firearms not property? Frankly the way Canada is set up is the worst of both worlds. The things that would benefit Canadians the most to be at the federal level aren't and the things that would work best under a provinces control aren't either.

6

u/Silver_Pollution_297 Aug 03 '26

I'd say it's nearly certain an election is called before 2029, while Trump is still in and the Libs are still polling well & unfortunately they'll probably win a bigger majority. Next real chance at a CPC government won't be till at least 2031 or 2032 & who knows what the Conservative Party will look like by then.

11

u/WeightedDips95 Aug 03 '26

I think by then the concerted psyoping against PP we’re seeing for the crime of being somewhat unapologetically conservative will have us with a leader like Doug Ford. By that point there won’t even be a point in voting

11

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 03 '26

Yep, they’re definitely calling an election while Trumps still in office. He’s their saving grace. Realistically the best outcome for us would be Trump dying in office in the next year or two

8

u/bosnanic Aug 03 '26

If I were the PM and wanted to drop this while facing as little backlash as possible, I'd probably hope the SCC rules against the previous OiC, then give an "Aw shucks, well, we tried, guys" speech to the public. Afterwards, I'd celebrate in private that I don't have to deal with this Trudeau boondoggle anymore.

12

u/Puzzleheaded-Tie35 Aug 03 '26

Unfortunately, even if this were true, he would need more than just the right solution, he would need the right solution at the right time.

There couldn't be any high-profile shootings recently, it would have to be far enough from an election that he could run damage control, it couldn't be too close to the Poly anniversary, and we would need more calm relations with the US.

If he really wants to scrap it, we'll see after the SCC decision, but my bet is there are going to be 2 plans to choose from based on the climate at the time of the decision (if the SCC scraps the bans). First would be "we tried" and he tries to distance himself from it, until he needs a wedge issue for the election. Second (if the climate is bad, like if the decision comes down in early December) the Liberals announce they will be introducing legislation to codify they bans, then drag it out enough that they can use it for the 2029 election.

If the SCC scraps the bans and he wants it to continue, then legislation will be basically immediate, whipped votes in the House of Commons, and promises/bribes/threats in the Senate.

11

u/FunkyFrunkle Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26

It all depends on what he wants to achieve.

If he’s looking to drop it and doesn’t necessarily care about preserving the gun control message or saving face, he could drop it now. There were also lots of opportunities to kibosh the whole thing under the guise of bringing the political temperature down out west. Most provinces are against it and so are a bunch of police forces.

He could admit that this whole thing is too expensive and too logistically demanding and scrap it on the grounds of pragmatism.

However, if he’s looking to preserve the gun control message for the Liberal party and not leave a sour taste in everyone’s mouth, none of those options were good.

The problem with all previous “off ramps” as people like to call them is that none of them could have been taken without more or less destroying any possibility of the government ever using gun control as a platform in the future because they basically blew their shot when they went all-in on these expansive bans. Everyone supported the long gun registry until the figures were exposed and then all of a sudden nobody supported it. It was too toxic to touch and nobody has ever mentioned the idea of a registry again.

The same thing would happen if they scrapped the confiscations on cost, logistics or provincial opposition. The idea of gun bans would be too toxic to touch for years and when you have gun control as a core platform of your party, any outcome that hurts the agenda is unacceptable. You can’t get any more “gun control” than outright bans.

The nice thing about taking an L in court is that you can blame the Trudeau government for being too hasty, you can blame the “gun lobby” for taking this to court all while preserving gun control as a political platform. So really, the best “option” they have is to hope this falls apart in court.

If the Supreme Court rules against the government but gives them a 12 month window to create legislation, they could simply choose to stall legislation until the grace period ends and they have to comply with the ruling. This is, of course, if they really are looking to wash their hands of this.

So the governments best play if they’re looking to scale this back is to let this white-knuckle ride play out and hope the court ruling cleans up the messiest part for you. However, the conclusions of the Supreme Court are out of the governments hands entirely so only time will tell what happens.

6

u/TKB-059 bc Aug 03 '26

Self-defenestration?

23

u/WeightedDips95 Aug 03 '26

But to be real, I’ve seen this brain dead theory a lot more than once here sadly.

Carney built much of his career and was a huge promoter of the net zero cult. The LPC pushed it to the detriment of every single Canadian to the point of kneecapping our own economy. Carney had no issue cutting parts of the carbon tax blatantly just to take the wind of of the CPCs sails.

Did Canadians question why they were told they needed to pay taxes on gas to get to work and heat their homes and now all of a sudden they don’t and the LPC is “putting money back in the pockets!”? No, they simply started saying Pollievre was stupid for this somehow.

Thinking Canadians expect logical consistency on anything is completely naive and ignorant. Carney knows this as well. There’s twenty ways he could scrap the program and get himself a bump- as a measure to defend us from the US or as a pragmatic matter of money. Or he could just quietly scrap it and no one would care.

He’s a year and a half in and hasn’t done any of that because he’s a leftwing authoritarian and doesn’t want us owning guns. Seriously can’t believe you people are so desperate to extend him the benefit of the doubt.

He’s had about 10 chances to end it so far and no suffer politically and hasn’t done so. Especially when he could have used Gary as a scapegoat. Carney isn’t dumb. He’s a 4D chess playing economic master yoda

I love Mark Carney as much or more than the next person, and i rack my brain to come up with reasons everything he does it good, but i just don't see any evidence that he has ANY sort of negative opinion about the bans and confiscations.

He's appointed provonost to a position, he's spoken about her and her anti gun stance positively. The only times I've ever seen/heard of him mentioning it was to say it's going forward, call guns a danger to Canada, and to lend support behind it. I've never heard anything bad about it from him.

Again, i want to give him be benefit of the doubt, because image how bad PP would have been and my elbows are up to the sky!, but is there any evidence to believe this?

If Mark Carney says it I'll believe it... But has he said it?
