Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

It’s looking like we’re probably losing poilievre in the not too distant future 👎🏻

It's been incredible observing the leader of the opposition getting the most amount of media criticism since the last federal election rather than the actual prime minister and his government who's been in charge for a year and half (11 years total for the LPC btw). Not to mention that Carney's had a majority since April and yet the media still finds a way to focus the attention on the leader of the opposition.

You can't find any example in a provincial context either where the leader of the provincial opposition party has numerous media hit pieces ran against them. Interesting how this seems to only happen at the federal level in Canada.

It's all so fake/inorganic and IMO it's done to create the context that he's not popular anywhere in Canada. Yet anecdotally you can still see that he's pretty popular based on face to face interactions that he has with the public. Polling anyone under the age of 55 in Canada shows this too.

However, sadly, the media narrative works against him because the number 1 consumer of legacy media in Canada are boomers. They also are the ones that are being heavily oversampled in all the polling. Boomers are still heavily in support of the Liberals and Carney where it's like a 70/30 split.

Don't buy into the wave of hit pieces. They're op eds based on polls that don't mean much.

They're rolling out all the stops because the government is taking scrutiny over their own mps stepping down (and some other unsavory business).

The conservatives would gain nothing from decapitating themselves.

Plus if they did swap in a new leader now, all that would do would be to give the other parties time to smear them (people only now paint Otoole as a moderate, he was trump of the north during his era, Scheer ate plenty of mud too).

Also people are acting like the LPC are even at there peak. They have not been at there peak in months. Depending on the poll as well a lot of there support comes from the death of the NDP. Now it’s “Will the NDP recover?”

Carneys popularity is consistently in the high 50s. As long as he’s polling high the liberals will be fine. It’s shit lol

Yes he himself as a leader is high. Largely he’s being propped up by the 55+ voters. Which damn boomers out here not beating the allegations.

You actually think he will step down? Best showing for a conservative in a general election last year, 8+ million votes, pretty rock solid base. They could run Obama against Carney right now and the brain dead liberal followers would still vote against us.

The knives always come out when the polling goes to shit

I hope not. I don’t think I’d ever be bothered to vote then. Only candidate worth voting for (in my opinion) is a pro gun one that gets rid of the current system and replaces it with a better one. And makes suppressors legal. And makes stand your ground laws. And the right to self defence with any “tool” a charter/constitutional right like they did in the Czech Republic.

Hate to say it but IMO the biggest chance would be the NDP making a comeback. Carney has pissed off a lot progressives by shrinking the public service, bailing out rich condo developers, back to work orders on unions, and promising to build pipelines. The issue is people voting for Carney not because they like him but due to fear mongering from the LPC telling potential NDP voters that they’re the lesser of two evils. Oddly enough the NDP somehow winning, however unlikely they would be, would be better for us than another LPC win.

Pierre has a solid base that could otherwise win at least a minority if it weren’t for Carney being able to campaign on Trump/US politics rather than Canadian politics.

Democratic socialists like Lewis are champions of civil rights and in many cases personal property rights. It’s private ownership of the economy socialists tend to criticize or advocate for different arrangements on (public ownership, co-operatives, etc.) not someone’s personal processions.

Owning a gun is not like owning a mine or factory or grocery store.

Guns are the one area where a conservative government migjt be better but Lewis’ ideas on a public option for telecoms, build out of social housing, a wealth tax, improved EI, strong regulation of AI and a public pharmaceutical manufacturer (so we can make cheap generic drugs like Canada actually did a few decades ago) are all good policies.

Maybe so, but I don't think that's a priority for Canadians right now.

Depends of the socialist. For some, the lines of personnel and private property are blurred, at least in discussion.

At best, Lewis will keep mum about the subject. At worst, he will try and go father than the LPC.

but Lewis’ ideas on a public option for telecoms, build out of social housing, a wealth tax, improved EI, strong regulation of AI and a public pharmaceutical manufacturer (so we can make cheap generic drugs like Canada actually did a few decades ago) are all good policies.

Sure, but I don't think Canadians care about those issues in the way we would like to think they do.

If true, our politically captured media will call the next conservative leader “far-right” or a “fascist” within a week. Even if he’s some liberal they install like Ford.

Don’t need to screenshot. They do that with literally every CPC leader

2

u/SlowDebate3165 Aug 16 '26

I know. That's the point.

At least we'll get some laughs.

3

u/GinnAdvent Aug 15 '26

There seems to be a lot of news about that lately.

11

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 15 '26

Sucks ass. I actually believed he’d reverse all this gun bullshit. Hopefully he’s not replaced with some flip flopping loser like o’toole

3

u/GinnAdvent Aug 15 '26

That was a big blunder. Still remember that in 2021 and put himself in a precarious position from JTs argument.

But it shouldn't be too hard to defend it now since everyone knows banning guns don't reduce the crime in this country. Relatively speaking.

Who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️I still don’t trust the average Canadian to have any common sense

3

u/Lumindan Aug 15 '26

Trust that eventually things will be shitty enough to oust the government.

3

u/boozefiend3000 Aug 15 '26

I’m not getting my hopes up. The liberals have their majority until 2029 and they’ll run an election before Trumps out of office to win another mandate after that too

2999 tbh.

Bro this country is not making it to 2100, much less 2999.
