My PAL license journey so far (i'm in AB):

-application received 6 months ago

-credit card charged 3 months ago

-emailed CFO for an update 6 weeks ago (still no response)

-contacted MP's office and they reached out to CFO for an update. CFO came back saying my application is still under review, and new applications can take up to 18 months. Refused to provide any more detail.

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '22 edited Oct 30 '22

Similar situation here. Been nearly a year, the ABCFO isn't budging on providing any detail or communicating what deficiency there is or what extra info is needed to me nor my MP.

Nothing shady in my record either. Yes to a personal history question but provided a lot of information up front negating it (e.g. lost job, but got rehired and have been permanently employed since a couple months after). Also gave me the 18 month estimate.

I would expect, if they're investigating, that they would have asked for more info, contacted references, or requested permission to access more of my personal information at this point. I don't think they're investigating. I think it's in a "look twice" pile that they aren't putting much effort into.

2

u/necros911 Oct 30 '22

I’m the same. Says ‘passed initial review. If we need more we will contact you’ I’m AB also. Good to know the fight I might have on my hands attempting to get an answer.

My only theory is they found something in your application/background check they're digging more in to. Otherwise, keep calling until you get through.

A name roughly similar to a serial killer, not the same, just sounds similar.

u/ZwickHimself Oct 30 '22

Shawn James Lacey ? Geoffrey dahmerando?

0

u/ZwickHimself Oct 30 '22

Do you have a history of mental health issues? Have you been convicted or charged with a crime? Are you known by police, or have connections with people who are? Any previous peace bonds? Any of your references contacted, did they say something stupid? Did you check yes to any other the form questions?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '22

No to every single one of those questions. My application should be perfectly straightforward - or so I would think.

I’m exactly like you and in AB. I just emailed MP cause I’m mad. I used my virtual visa debit # on it instead of MO. Didn’t think anything of it but apparently that isn’t valid. Keep phoning AB CFO and am waiting for Agent when they close at 3pm and cut the lines. Numerous emails. I’m pretty sure it’s because of the Visa debit even though it’s a Visa # but the lack of communication is stupid. It was accepted in May and never got charged. Good luck.

All of you wonderful folks were amazing at guiding me on how to sell a firearm (non-restricted). I got the PAL verified from RCMP’s Individual Web Services, both the buyer and I got the same verification number.

When meeting to conduct the sale, do I need to check any ID other than the PAL number? Anything else I should be aware of?

Thank you folks!!

2

u/MLI691H Nov 03 '22

PAL and another piece of government issued ID, double check expiry date.

Looking for options for a holster with sights geared towards IPSC and club usage, any insight on where to look would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

3

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '22 edited Oct 30 '22

Really just walk into any gun store or online if rhey have free shipping and you need something else too:

Avoid Serpa at all costs Kydex is nice but the others work just fine No drop leg holsters (unless you're police or CAF and it's your service holster for IPSC) Safarilands and Blade techs are nice

So I’m able to see my pal application status online and it says “the initial review is done”. How long from this point for me to revive my pal back? Also is there anyway to speed this process up? Thanks!

2

u/TheSmallSlice Oct 30 '22

I really hate to tell you but it'll probably be a couple months at the very least, I'm sitting at like 4 and a half months now I think since they received my application. It sucks and you might get pissed off like me if you see others with later timelines seemingly randomly getting approved well before you but there's nothing you can do about it, its pretty much just waiting from here mate. I mean you can try and call but if I were you probably just try and check the website portal roughly every month, just focus on other things so you don't get frustrated checking every day and wondering why its not showing up.

2

u/Ok_Permission5689 Oct 30 '22

Like I can see it so at least I know it’s in the works. But it’s just annoying like not only I have to pay $200 not my non restricted course, I have to wait like 4 to 6 months on top. Then an additional $62 for the application fee.

3

u/TheSmallSlice Oct 30 '22 edited Oct 30 '22

I hear ya man, the whole system is messed up and the provinces/federal governments don't give a crap about giving funding or support to help them process applications and transfers faster. Like for me I don't know if I could get approved this coming month or if I'll be like next year sometime that's how messed up it is. Oh yeah and others who sent their applications like a month after I did got approved like at the beginning of October so......yeah....that's a thing.

2

u/Ok_Permission5689 Oct 30 '22

Well hopefully you get it by mid-November to December. Like I sent mine in august 22nd, two weeks ago I got the CC payment and the application update but that’s about it from that time. Then I hear ya. Like I hear people who sent theirs in like June and just got approved. It’s so messed up honestly, I wish I was able to do it sooner before all of this backlog crap started.

Was looking for a course for PAL and possibly RPAL before the handgun ban was proposed, but then ofc everything near Winnipeg filled up, managed to find a CFSC for me and my buddy june 12th, (shout-out to Big Al), unfortunately no RPAL courses available, Sent in PAL application july 2nd, and just got it in the mail October 17th. Sucks because I think that even if I did find a RPAL course I wouldn’t have hardly got it in time to buy anything lol

In Ontario? FSESO should be able to help - they administrate the C(R)FSC and thus manage records within 1y of having taken the course.

So i lost my pal in like may. I reported it lost/stolen immediately and when i applied for a replacement i applied for my restricted simultaneously (i took the course)

I received a letter saying that they needed more information regarding some areas of my application, (i assumed they would have it on file because it was the same letter i sent them originally) so i printed it out again and sent it back.

It's now been several months and i haven't received anything. When i check on the website it says they've received it and they will contact me if they need any more information. I'm starting to get upset because i've not been able to purchase or carry any firearms for this duration.

So is my PAL number still valid even if the card is reported stolen? Can i buy stuff online? Should i call the Alberta CFO and see if they can expedite the process? What should i do?

My buddy bought his pistols from early June to early July, about 12 in total, and then they all got approved at same time in mid July.

We All Gotta Try Bud!

If we can get at least

Half the population into legal Gun Owners (Unlikely But Still U Never Know)

We never lose our gun rights Ever again in Canada.

We might even gain more gun rights ( No ATTs, Home Defense, Self Defense)

As the world is constantly changing and evolving around us.

But then again as I said It would be pretty hard to accomplish but not Impossible

As of right now I believe 2 Million Canadians have their PAL

As of right now we make up a very small portion of the Total Population which I believe is out of

35 Million Canadians

You have the right to defend yourself, who told you otherwise?

2

u/jaraxel_arabani Nov 01 '22

Not with a firearm you don't. the moment you point have it loaded at home you broke a bunch of laws automatically, the moment you point it at anyone it's another bunch of laws.

Sure there are case where the firearm owner was acquitted but they immediately arrest you if you ever use any firearms in self defense.

2

u/Beretta_errata removeddit pro Nov 01 '22

You still have the right to defend yourself with a reasonable amount of force.

This is why firearms defense insurance exists.

4

u/jaraxel_arabani Nov 01 '22

TBH I doubt even getting PP into office, or even a conservative majority would bring any gun rights back. All they've ever done was cancel the long rifle registry.

There is literally no political gains but only losses for anyone to return gun rights. I can already imagine the left and Trud'oh screaming "they just want to be americans and have gun violence everywhere!" It's just a really easy ammunition (see what I did there? :-D ) to give to liberal as a (pointless, but never stopped them) talking point.

Would I vote conservatives? fuck yeah, fuck trudeau and his fake cronies; do I have any delusion PP would actually do anything for us? nope not really either.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '22

Anecdotally they only really call references if you checked yes to the personal questions. They never called mine and that seems to be more common then not. You could always have your references call them instead at the 1-800-731-4000 number. Other then that I can't really help.

Question regarding restricted transport.

In the act:

unloaded, in respect of a firearm, means that any propellant, projectile or cartridge that can be discharged from the firearm is not contained in the breech or firing chamber of the firearm nor in the cartridge magazine attached to or inserted into the firearm. (non chargée)

So does this mean I can keep an empty magazine inside my handgun for transfer Since it’s already trigger locked and in a locked case?

3

u/Scopequest Nov 01 '22

Yes you can keep (transport/store) an unloaded mag in your gun

2

u/minikingpin Nov 02 '22

QC CFO is freaking weird… Had 7 pending transfers, earliest one being from June 27th which is person to person transfer. I got an email this morning with two transfers processed, from July 4th and 21st purchase from stores. Found it weird that the June 27th one wasn’t accepted 1st so I called the CFO. Lady told me that person to person is another team, that those take longer… The I asked why the other transfers from stores on my file weren’t accepted and it was something about a firearm verification with the rcmp… wtf is that? Like those firearms are purchased from stores but need to be verified further?! What a fucking shit show.

AR pistol mags?

Would someone be able to explain to me the legality of the 10rd "pistol" mags that can supposedly be used in stanag-compatible guns like the MR1, Type97, WK180C etc?

How does it work, is there any situation where it is not legal? If I bring a 10rd "pistol" mag to a range and shove it in my Type97, or if I use it to shoot coyotes when hunting, are any of those not legal uses?

Further along the same point, I'm told 50 Beowulf mags are "legally" 5rd mags but hold 10rds of 5.56, and can legally be used in a 5.56 gun as well?

How does this work exactly and how does one avoid federal prison using this loophole?

3

u/Scopequest Nov 03 '22

The law is about what gun (and caliber) the magazine was designed and intended for. If they happen to fit in another gun that's fine.

It may be not legal if the provincial hunting regs put a limit of what you can use or how many rounds can be in the gun. Example Ontario restricts shotguns to 3 round while hunting, even though the federal limit is higher.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '22

That's exactly the explanation I was after thank you.

Do you happen to know which guns those AR pistol mags are actually designed for? I can't recall ever seeing an AR pistol in Canada.

3

u/Scopequest Nov 03 '22

I think it's a LAR15. Think of an ar15 without a stock, shroud, and only a 4 or 5 inch barrel. Same mag position, the rounds don't go through the grip like a Glock does.

Both? They are really in different classes. What is your goal when making this purchase?

2

GSG-16 is good, but some have reliability issues, and can be picky on what ammo they like.

I don't have either, but I would recommend the SKS first if you had to choose.

Both are fun and affordable to shoot. But the SKS can also be used for hunting, etc.

Though maybe I'd go the opposite way if the person might be a bit gunshy and would be better off starting with a 22.

2

u/Scopequest Nov 04 '22

Very different guns. Sks will cost more to feed. An A22 or 10/22 will be more reliable than the gag (and more accurate than the sks if that's important).

Is pick the sks if you don't want the more traditional rifle of the A22 or 10/22

Most Chinese SKS in Canada are not Norinco. Most Chinese SKS in Canada were manufactured before Norinco existed. Norinco SKS are much more common in USA. Our Military Surplus SKS are more correctly called Type 56, or just Chinese SKS.

Also, the Chinese SKS have super shitty sears. I recommend replacing the sear with a Murray's sear. Safer, and results in a much nicer trigger pull.

It's 1 month and 1 day since my PAL was approved (BC). The card is still not in my hands. What is going on with canadapost? I consulted their website and it seems that nothing could've possibly disrupted their delivery. Also can someone let me know what information is included on the envelope that carries your card? Hypothetically, I am looking to do wildland firefighting this summer.

I will most likely be gone for 4-6 months in the bush and possibly have to rent a room during that time away. For temporary moves like that can I leave all my documentation as is (PAL/RPAL, Where I live, Drivers Licence Etc) Or do i have to change it only to change it when I return.

I was originally going to transfer my restricted to my friend - which I cant anymore

I was also considering giving my guns to a gun smith before leaving and picking them up in 4-6 months upon my return

Are these options even possible or does this sound illegal af and I'm dumb as fuck?

Where to buy used firearms/secondary market? I know of Gun Post. Is that the best way? Do local shops sell used ever?

2

u/throwa37 Nov 04 '22

Lots of shops, big and small, sell used guns, yeah. You can also google gun shows local to your area, which are basically gun flea markets.

Both of those options are great ways to quickly sell guns that you're looking to offload, too.

2

u/Distinct_Page_9628 Nov 05 '22

thanks! I see theres one in woodstock, ON this month that isnt too far may check it out.

I bought a firearm (pistol) last year. Do I still need an ATT to bring my firearm to the gun range?

2

u/Beretta_errata removeddit pro Nov 05 '22

ATT to range and home are automatic. Everything else will need you to call in.

Should I get a Type 81 or an SKS as my first gun? I looked up the Type 81, but it seems overpriced and I don’t like that for the price you pay, people are reporting that the wood stock breaks and how many customizations you have to do out of the box. SKS seems like a cool gun but I don’t want to buy a surplus one online without being able to actually see its condition in person. Also, is build quality of Chinese SKS worse than the Russian?

3

u/throwa37 Nov 04 '22

SKS, for sure. It's half the price, fires the same round, and doesn't suffer from the quality control issues that the Norinco T81s have. I'd personally recommend a Russian rather than a Chinese, as every Russian that I've owned (and family members have owned) are in good working order and hit exactly where you aim them right out of the box. The one Chinese rifle I've had, on the other hand, has an extremely loose trigger pin and shoots like six feet high.

If you don't want to buy one sight unseen, you shouldn't have any trouble finding SKSs at any local gun store.

-1

u/_Rhein Nov 04 '22

T81 is great, I love the one my friend got. SKS? not so much, and the price on these thing is getting rediculous...

are handguns technically prohibs now, trying to get a atp to go to a gunsmith but they wont issue atps for prohibs

3

No?

Everyone who owns a handgun already can still use them like normal. The ban was on transfer of ownership, nothing else.

I have two previous mental health diagnosis - one of them I've fully recovered from and the other is permanent but doesn't affect my ability to safely own and use guns, though some people with outdated stereotypes may think otherwise.

The last time I consulted a doctor/psychiatrist about either of these was in the UK, because like I said neither of them have caused any problems and I've completely recovered from one and have had no need to speak to a doctor/psychiatrist in Canada regarding either one.

I asked my previous psychiatrist from the UK if he would be okay doing a letter just verifying my statements that neither of these diagnosis cause any problems in my life, but he was reluctant to do it because he said that Canada is outside of his 'medical jurisdiction.' (those weren't his exact words, but that was the general jist)

The issue is I highly doubt that the RCMP will just take my word for it, and I'm reluctant to spend thousands on reassessments with a Canadian MH clinic just to have a medical professional tell the RCMP that my diagnosis is not gonna be a problem.

Anyone been in a similar position and/or have any advice?

2

u/CanadaGunsMod Nov 04 '22

Apply for your PAL, be honest. If the RCMP requires additional documentation they will ask for it. You do not have to supply this up front. If you do not have a history of violence, threats, or self-harm, they will often not go further in their questioning.

0

u/Brilliant_Gift1917 Nov 04 '22

Thanks. Hopefully they won't have a problem with it, I just worry about the stigma around one of the names of the diagnosis. How much detail should I go into on the cover letter they ask you to write if you tick a box for mental health diagnosis? I was thinking just a simple "These are both from when I was a kid/young teenager, I've recovered from one a long time ago and the other has never affected me, and neither should present any problems with me owning guns" should be enough?

Perhaps a note from your family doctor?

0

u/Brilliant_Gift1917 Nov 04 '22

I haven't been in Canada insanely long, I do have OHIP but I've never had any issues which required me to register with a Family Doctor, I only ever had to go to a walk-in once for some antibiotics.

Even if I registered with a Family Doctor, I doubt a letter from them would mean much as all of my mental health consultations were years ago in the UK. They wouldn't know me well enough for a letter to hold any weight unless I took an expensive reassessment. I've simply not had any mental health problems since I was a young teenager and therefore have had no reasons to seek any consultations for it.

Restricted transfers all backed up?

Just called the shop about my recent purchase of a restricted rifle. They said the transfers are back up and I won’t be able to get it until next year summer. He said the CFO is still dealing with transfers submitted in June!

Is that the case for you guys as well?

Worth the Risk to buy an SKS?

I own a couple guns, but no centre-fire semi autos. I view them as too risky to buy, as they’re absolutely on the chopping block for the next ban. It’s not out of cowardice or submission; I have a family that likely wouldn’t appreciate the RCMP going through our home because I have a prohibited weapon. That being said, I’ve been recently looking into the SKS, a gun I’ve always wanted but was afraid to buy, and I think this gun might be the one exception. There’s millions of them in Canada, legally non-registered. They’re also especially prevalent in the hands of Indigenous hunters, a group Trudeau cannot politically afford to bully. I want to stick it to him and buy the gun he doesn’t want me to have, but I also don’t want to sacrifice my family’s privacy and legal security. What do you guys think? Is the SKS in a good position as far as rifles of its kind go?

5

u/throwa37 Nov 06 '22

the next ban

There is no "next ban" until they announce one.

It’s not out of cowardice or submission

I mean, yes, it is out of submission.

I also don’t want to sacrifice my family’s privacy and legal security

Then just surrender it for cash if it gets banned.

What do you guys think? Is the SKS in a good position as far as rifles of its kind go?

Yes. I don't think it's going to get banned.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '22

Do you think it’s less likely to get banned than say, a Type 81 or 180?

2

u/throwa37 Nov 06 '22

I don't think any more guns are going to be banned in the near future, after hearing Mendicino's comments to the media and SECU. But if the government does eventually create a legal classification for prohibited assault weapons, I don't think the SKS will fall under it, no.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '22

Alright. Just ordered two. Thanks.

2

u/throwa37 Nov 06 '22

Oh, nice. I think you'll be glad you did. What make did you get?

Quick question

Has the magazine cap for .22lr changed at all. Is it still at 10?

4

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '22

10? There is no capacity limit for rimfire long guns at this time. Maybe you are thinking of the Ruger 10/22; that is a F-ed up situation because the RCMP claim it is a pistol magazine. While the RCMP do not make law, nobody really wants the risk or hassle of a trial if prosecuted for a large capacity 10/22 mag.

Any good restricteds we can buy? Im gonna have my card soon after the handgun ban so i dont know how useful the R is gonna be

5

u/chillyrabbit Oct 30 '22

M1 carbines are cool and criminally underrated. Ammo is less common but it is still routinely stocked on shelves.

VZ 61 for super compact PDW type rifle

Kriss vector in its original 5.5" barrel

P90 In it's 10.5" barrel

Cz bren 2 right now in 8",11",14" and 16" barrels.

A lot of the B&T stuff comes in SBR sizes

Micro Tavor (13") if you like surplus stuff

The market is restricted (ha!) But there are still plenty of R rifles around that if you only ever go shooting at a range isn't that bothersome to have and shoot with.

New purchase suggestions Alas the gun market keeps drying up in Canada but the hunger for a new firearm always remains. Wanted to get a semiauto rifle, was wondering which one would be the better option out of the FX9 and Keltec RDB. FX9 is what im leaning towards as bulpups have the action right next to your ear and i dont really find it pleasant plus trigger, malfunction clearing etc. however the look of the rdb looks very nice. Just wondering what yall think is the better option in terms of fun, value and customizations. Thanks

2

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '22

FX9 is a 9mm pistol caliber carbine. The RDB is a bullpup 5.56. Quite dissimilar. I have shot the RDB, and it is an interesting gun. However, as a target shooting gun, it isn't very good. Probably better por action shooting. A major drawback is that there is no way to inspect the chamber.

I have a Glock 22 which I love but the ammo is too damn expensive. I'm looking for a Glock 17 barrel so I could shoot 9mm out of it. I'll be in Boston in a few weeks and just wondering if I could bring a barrel over from there or if it is considered a restricted item.

Hello all,
I would like to benefit from your experience. I’m still new to guns and I got myself a GSG16 for my first. I like it but now I would like to upgrade to something more powerful and reliable. What do you recommend for a black rifle semi-auto around 1k which is non restricted? Give
me your top 3 please.

1

u/Scopequest Nov 01 '22

1) a time machine

2) a hot tub which also functions as a time machine

3) something about using the sun's gravity to go back in time.

I suppose you could also go the sks + black spray paint route

So I’m In Alberta, I had my cc payment come out 3 weeks ago and the initial review is complete. My references still haven’t gotten a call. Should I call the CFO and see what’s up? Or should I wait a week and if nothing happens then call? They received my application almost 3 months ago.

Expectation should be 3 months to CC charge, then another 3 months before approval.

My contacts never got called, so no you should not call CFO.

Would you guys recommend a ruger pc carbine or a fx-9. The firearm would be used primarily as a range gun for target shooting. Maybe some run and gun if my range opens a range for it in the next summer.

2

u/Ordinary-Commercial9 Nov 02 '22

+1 for Ruger PCC.

  • Looks bad ass
  • Floating barrel
  • Takedown feature is super convenient
  • Comes with mag well attachment if you want to use glock magazines in it.
  • Mine has shown to be incredibly reliable, not a single malfunction and produces very impressive groupings.

Beretta 92FS magazines work for what that's worth. That being said, mine don't always lock the slide back, and they're Beretta 30 rounders.
