just wondering how did you know the application was received? Did you mail with tracking or was it from the online portal that was showing the received status? I mailed in my application 2 weeks ago but no file has been created online. I regret for not mailing in with tracking so now I am worried whether my application actually got to them

I sent it with normal snail mail as well, no tracking. The online portal shows when it was received, however it will only show once they open your envelope and charge your CC/process whatever payment type you chose.
I had the same fear as you for about 3 months until I saw the charge in my CC statement.

RPAL/PAL Application
Received February 24 2022 Cc Charged May 13th No Update after that
Called RCMP and they mentioned that my application is with CFO support group at Miramichi.
Saskatchewan CFO said if I don’t get my license by the end of July, they will escalate the process.
Today I called SK CFO and they made a request to re-assign the case to them. I was told the case will be reassigned today and I will have my license approved next week.
Wish me luck!

April 7 - received
July 8 - cc charged and initial review
July 29 - license issued
August 5 - license in hand
So about 4 months total.

I'm on the path of gun ownership, and I want to ask what to watch out for.
At this time, I have:
- called for PAL information (card is 'at the printers')
- purchased a range membership with that
- ordered a Rhino 60DS with these two
- sent range membership proof to CFO
Next up, I'm going to order:
- a gun cabinet (eyeballing 10 gun, 2 door cabinet on sale at Cabelas)
- some trigger guards
- a delightful selection of handguns (carbines later)
- ear protection for my big fat head
Coming up after that, I need to sort out:
- ATT
- firearm care and cleaning
What am I missing?

ATT will be automatically attached to your freshly printed license when you get your first registration certificate. You will also need the paper that the licence is attached to, it states, 'conditions cut out and carry with licence'. It's stupid.
Ear and eye protection. Gloves optional.

I got a transfer approved for a June 1st purchase on Thursday, I can't imagine that they've made it past June 2nd. You've probably got a fairly long wait ahead of you.

Made a thread with a picture, mods told me to post it here.

So my question is for anyone that shoots that is from the Lower Mainland, there seems to be a spot at the North end of Pitt Meadows that is east of Pitt Addington Marsh, Rennie Rd would be the cutoff for the municipality heading east to Golden Ears Park, accessible from Silver Valley Rd + FSRs.
Anyone know the spot I mean?

Is it worth calling the ON CFO to check on my PAL/RPAL application? RCMP told me it was sent to CFO on July 5th.
I know it will be next to impossible to get through so wondering if I should be trying or not.
UPDATE: called the CFO-ON and got through on the second try. Very friendly and helpful.

I received my first restricted in the mail yesterday, I have also received the registration certificate for it and a new RPAL with the transport conditions on it. Do I need an ATT or any other documents to take it to the range?

Nope. Assuming your conditions slip lists the ability to transport restricted firearms to any range in your province (I say this because collectors might lack this condition), then the combination of your registration certificate, RPAL and Conditions slip act will act your ATT to transport it between your house and any approved range in your province. So make sure you have those three things with you whenever you do transport it to the range.
If you wish to take it anywhere else (such as to a gunsmith), then you'll need to apply for an ATT for that specific time and reason.

Just got my transfer approved over the phone approximately 3.5 weeks after purchase in Alberta.
Was on hold with the CFO office for about 30 minutes and the agent approved my transfer over the phone.

I think I've asked this before but can't remember... Anyway, doing my Rpal application at the moment and all of my references are out of province. Does anyone know if there are issues with scanned documents? Ie their signatures won't be "in pen", instead signed and then scanned to me.

Asking on the behalf of my friend. He lives in BC and want to do some shooting before deciding whether or not to get his pal. He is telling me all the ranges down there seem to have this rule "we cannot accept solo, unlicensed shooters. The minimum size is two people unless one possesses a valid pal

I sent in my RPAL renewal in February, and it was listed as received and in process in early March. I've checked a couple of times since then and it has just said in process. As of this morning, I checked and it reported that there is no record of an application in process. Is this a normal message, meaning that the renewal is completed? This isn't my first renewal and there's no reason this should not have been straightforward. My license expires this month, and apparently six months isn't adequate time for this to go through...
Edit: and now the in process message is back, I'm assuming this was a stupid error message of some sort.

You can not buy any of the guns on the mandatory confiscation list so you don’t have to worry if you are buying from a shop.
But yes, there are guns that are not semi-auto that were on the list.

Just went to my gun clubs restricted safety orientation before they let you just come whenever you want with your handguns, someone there said something about having to keep a piece of paper with your new pal card that on the card says “ has special conditions”…. I do not remember this piece of paper and haven’t carried it obvs…. Do I need it and who should I contact to get a new one

During the PAL course they tell you that you need to carry 3 things. Your PAL card, your registration certificate, and your conditions letter. It is the conditions letter they are talking about. You PAL card came attached to your conditions letter.

whats the general guidelines for crown land shooting regarding backdrops and whats beyond?
I found an awesome location where you shoot about 90m into the side of a large hill at a downward angle, no way the bullet is penetrating the hill, its massive.
walked it out behind a couple hundred meters and its all thick forest and smaller rolling hills of stone.
the issue is when i look at it on google maps, about 400meters behind the hill is the road we take into the location that is somewhat regularly traveled by campers and canoes accessing lakes. (the road is at the bottom of a snall valley as well)
i decided this probably wasnt a great idea although the spot seemed perfect aside from the logging road 400m beyond the backstop.
i decided to reach out to a CO and ask for advice on a location and he directed me directly to a spot pretty close by and i went there and it was obviously used for target shooting (empty shells around). it was obvious where the backstop was, but what fucked with me is the fucking road is 200meters behind the backstop, and this road is way more busy and actually maintained for cottage access!!!! the backstop was essentially the same, 100 meters straight into a hill instead of a downward angle.
the CO mentioned 2 clearing side by side so i went to the other clearing to see if it was better, it was a flat clearing at the top of a hill, it was obvious it was used for shooting and the pile of stumps on the other side of the clearing was filled with bullet holes and remains of targets. but what was crazy, no backstop past the logs, it was actually downhill after the logs and 50 meters to an active ATV trail and 150M to a lake people camp on. nothing stopping bullets passing through the logs from hitting the atv trail or lake except some forest (very thick forest granted). ive even seen people shooting there on multiple occasions when i was camping in the area this summer.
so whats the deal? if the backstop is good, does it not really matter whats beyond? this is frustrating to me because i wouldn't feel comfortable shooting at the spots the CO showed me but its obvious they are being heavily used but when i ask people online or at the gun range they tell me ill be killing innocent children if theres any form of roads, campsites or trails within a KM of the backstop

Does anyone know if you're required to declare autism/ASD as a behavioral/emotional issue on the PAL application and how this could potentially affect the result of the application?
Has anyone on SSRI antidepressants had experience with getting a PAL and how did it affect the process?

I’m not sure I’m much help on the first one, though I do know there is/was a rather active member on the fb ccfr page with autism who found calm in shooting, so it’s definitely doable. My only advice is to be upfront about it, it may also help if you got a dr to sign off on them being ok that you own guns. It may delay things but if you don’t say yes and they find out it may just get denied.
As for #2 I wasn’t on any for my initial application but started taking them and said so on my renewal(SSRI which is typically taken for depression, I use for anxiety) and there wasn’t an issue with the renewal.

Seeing how flimsy stack on safes are, I found a steel, double walled locking vertical office cabinet, for a 1/4 of the price.
Reading up on securement, would I be able to legally use this as a safe?
E:temp solution, not a forever safe.

Personally, I'd just treat it as an office cabinet and ensure that any restricted or prohibited firearms stored inside of it it have their own secure locking device as a result.
Being metal, it could count as a safe (see Johnny Sombrero / R. v. Barnes), but I wouldn't want to be in a position to have to argue that, especially without seeing the cabinet first hand to know how sturdy it may be.

Thats the general consensus. I planned on having trigger locks on all restricted anyways. Plus the cabinet is in a locked room. This cabinet has 3 different lockable areas which is a nice feature.
Hoping there's a good deal on a large fire rated safe this xmas!

As far as cabinets go it looks like it'll do the job, so if the restricted firearms have their own locks then you're good to use it.

Here's my thoughts:
That cabinet is definately not a school locker or a stack on safe. Its not obviously a better safe. Either it's similar safeyness and upon police interaction you well need to prove this in court; or is less a safe but should still be considered one, and you well need to prove that in court. Either way you get to go to court to set new legal precedent at great cost to you.
I think that is less secure than either of those things known to be a safe and should not be considered a safe.
Is it a container that is not readily broken into? I think maybe, despite the terrible placement of the lock on the large door. Try locking it and seeing if the door flexes much, could a kid pull that open from the bottom corner?

Does anyone got a restricted transfer lately from QC ? If so, what was the timeline ? I have 2 pending transfers, one initiated the 13 and the other the 14 th of june, still no updates, I spent nearly 3500$ for those two handguns and still cannot enjoy them. It's very frustrating !
I have many other restricted and prohib (due to the oic) fyi so it should in theory be quicker.

A friend of mine got his transfer approved (in Qc) yesterday for a purchase he made on June 3rd (not his first restricted, he also has multiple). His approximate transfer number was 5909xxx. That should give you a good idea where we are in Quebec. Judging by the speed of things at the moment you won’t see anything until October… I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news but this is the reality we are all facing. The ones that have it even worse are the first transfer folks. My other friend initiated his first transfer (in Qc also) beginning of May and still hasn’t received anything…

I heard a rate of 400 transfers processed per day which mean my transfer should be both (5932xxx and 5935xxx) done around ** do the math ** in ~ 60 to 65 business days or beginning of november.
Hughhh, man this system is so fucked up, it can't be other than on purpose.
I just hope they will be processing more transfers after the holidays at this point..

What's the process for bringing a cap and ball reproduction to the USA with you?
Considering the Americans are sensible and classify modern reproductions of Antique cap and ball pistols as not-firearms, you aren't technically bringing a firearm to the states. And to expand on that what's the legality of bringing a cylinder conversion cap and ball.
Call RCMP get ATT to Border. Go to Border Declare that you don't have a firearm?
I'm sure there a few blackpowder enthusiasts around here, if I can't get an answer I'll go over to the blackpowder sub.

Alberta transfer update, Took 94 phone calls. But I got transfers dated June 15th and June 30th approved with the Alberta cfo. Oddly the norinco Olympia I ordered on June 3rd had to go to the registrar for verification, so that one didn't go through yet. Make with that what you will. Good luck everyone.

In every province expect Ontario and Alberta. But yes, Silvercore will satisfy the requirements of the other provinces.

In every province except Ontario, yes, you need to be a member of a club. It's a requirement that the CFOs impose to "make sure" that you're using your Restricteds for sport shooting.
Somebody in Ontario took the CFO to court over that and won, hence the situation here where you don't need a membership.

Make sure they're thoroughly dry, and then apply a light coat of oil to all metal surfaces.
Don't skip the oil. It's necessary to prevent rust.

I used hot water and dawn, worked well, then i used an air compressor to dry off then let sit over night, then ballistolled that baby up the next day and was good to go

Unsure of how to frame a good photo of their firearms, most people would just place it down on the floor, stand over it, and snap some photos of it. This would lead to their feet being visible in the shot. Eventually people noticed the trend and turned it into a meme where they'd try to spice it up for humor (silly socks, gross feet, mismatched feet, using a pet's legs instead, etc)

Don't want to sound like a downer... But it'll be a few months... I assume when you say they received it, you mean your postal tracking says delivered... But that doesn't mean they really start looking at it... From recent time lines posted below and in previous weekly threads, seems like 2-3 months before it even shows on the web portal which is when they start their review... And probably a month or two after that assuming no problems would be when they'd approve... Then another 2 weeks for actual delivery of the license... By that time, it'll likely parliament will be back from summer recess and they'll have passed their legislation....

Sorry boss, but you aren't buying a handgun. You're looking at 4-6 months just to get your license. The handgun transfer freeze will be in effect before you get your license.

Nova Scotia PAL renewal plus restricted privilege addition timeline:
Mailed April 13th>Received April 21st>CC Charged July 21st>License approved August 6th.
Seems pretty consistent with the ~4 month timelines posted by others.
I already have my existing PAL and my online account shows restricted privilege, so I'm going to try and purchase a restricted with that info ahead of receiving my updated card.

Takes 3 months for CC charge and they start your application and 1 - 3 months after to get your license.

How is the used handgun market looking? I have a newly licensed person looking for a 22LR but may need to spring for both a rimfire and centrefire because of the freeze/ban. She's on waiting lists for some stores. I bought my handguns over a decade ago from stores so I'm out of the loop. We're both on Vancouver Island. Any info I can pass on helps, thanks!

bought my first restricted back on June 3rd, (ON) and still haven’t got the transfer.. just looked at my receipt, it’s got “ref # - UOFxxxx6504 exp august 24 2022” Sorry I am fairly new, is this my transfer number? And should I be worried about an expiry date approaching? I think I’ll just call them Monday anyway but any insight is appreciated

false, if you have a physical disability IIRC you can get a bonus license to shoot from a car parked on the side of the road

Don’t see why not. 90% of it is seated classroom instruction. If you’re able to stand on one foot and balance for a few minutes you’d be fine for the practical part of the test.

Really struggling and can't decide between the Mossberg 590A1 20" speed feed buttstock, xs ghost sight, m lok foregrip or the Remington 870 tactical 18.5" standard buttstock, xs ghost sight, standard foregrip. I heard Remington express models are garbage and Remington has been struggling for a whole now but something about it makes me interested. I was initially going to go with Benelli supernova but I don't really wanna spend hundreds on accessories and capacity upgrades ciz it's imported. What's the thoughts on new 870s now? Are they higher quality nowadays? I don't even see where I can get them in Canada or how much the tactical model costs.

Handguns aren't 'banned' there's a freeze on transfers. If you already own one, you can still use it like normal. So no, ammo won't be restricted.
Further, there's many guns that aren't handguns that also shoot 9mm or .22 or any of the other various calibers. How would they know if you were buying 9mm for a non-restricted FX-9 as opposed to a handgun? Or .22 for a single shot bolt action rifle instead of your PPQ?

Trudeau mentioned the handgun freeze as the next step after the import ban. I figured if stores can't sell or import handguns, it might be the same for the ammunition.

So let’s say you’ve been waiting forever for your application (RPAL) to be approved and sent in the mail but on the RCMP website you see it has been approved even though you have yet to receive it in the mail. Would it be advised against taking a NR to your range where you’re a member at but have yet to receive the actual license in the mail as of yet? I think I can assume the answer but just want to throw it out there anyways.

You need your PAL with you. Even yet, the headaches that could happen could never be worth the temporary convenience.
I’m waiting for my card to arrive too, should be any day now. The long wait has been brutal but we’re almost there.

Hi I am considering to apply for PAL but have a question about alcohol. I was addicted to alcohol and being treated by family doctor and specialist to quit completely in order to ensure liver enzymes return to normal. I have been sober for one month. No violence or any criminal history.
Is it possible my PAL application get rejected automatically because of my history ?

it's longer then that, most people are waiting 3 months for their credit cards to be charged, I'm 3 months as of tmw (2nd) and mine still hasn't been. so I'd say 4.5-5 months with no issues to who knows how long if there's issues

This is accurate. Three months for CC charge and after that 1-3 months for the license to be issued. Also it doesn't matter what province, it all goes to Miramichi and is processed the same way, by the same people.

I applied for non-restricted for hunting, applied end of February, they requested a second signed picture for the application and sent that in end of May… when is this process likely to be completed? Trying to Hunt in September

I changed my address in March 2022 (over the phone) and when I check the CFO/RCMP online portal it is updated. However I have yet to receive a new card in the mail, it has been 4 months now. Is this a normal time window? I am aware of the backlog of applications and transfers. But is this affecting cards going out as well?

Your address is not listed on your PAL card so I don't think you get a new one after you change addresses.

Honesty is the best policy, I would tell the truth, give details on a separate piece of paper and get a doctor's note. With the note it shouldn't take too much extra time to process your application. You dont want to risk being banned from firearms for lying.

I need a little clarification on the rules of storing NR Firearms. The law reads; "Lock the firearms in a cabinet, container or room that is difficult to break into."
My question is, what is defined as a room that is difficult to break into? If, say my bedroom had a lock, would that suffice? I don't expect the government to make sense at this point but my instructor said if there is a lock on the front door we could store it anywhere in the house. Can I trust this?

My understanding is that the room has to be locked and if it's ground level/basement, you need bars on the windows.

Yes and no. This is how it actually reads:
5 (1) An individual may store a non-restricted firearm only if
(a) it is unloaded;
(b) it is
(i) rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device,
(ii) rendered inoperable by the removal of the bolt or bolt-carrier, OR
(iii) stored in a container, receptacle or room that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into; and
(c) it is not readily accessible to ammunition, unless the ammunition is stored, together with or separately from the firearm, in a container or receptacle that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into.
It needs to be A, it needs to be one of the options for B, and it needs to be C.
So in other words, you can store a non-restricted rifle anywhere in your house IF it unloaded, not readily accessible to unlocked ammunition, and is either rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device or by the removal of the bolt or bolt-carrier.
The spirit of the law is more that if someone is already inside your house, that the firearm still has to take some deliberate effort for them to get to, that it won't just be laying somewhere out in the open with no lock on it with some rounds sitting beside it. It's less about theft prevention -nothing is going to stop someone with a little time, a little talent, or some basic tools - and is more the equivalent of a childproof resistant cap on a bottle of pills (in other words, so that a toddler or drunkard can't just pick it up and pull the trigger). So if a pane of glass is ultimately the only thing between someone and your rifle, make sure the rifle itself is rendered inoperable.
