whats the general guidelines for crown land shooting regarding backdrops and whats beyond?
I found an awesome location where you shoot about 90m into the side of a large hill at a downward angle, no way the bullet is penetrating the hill, its massive.
walked it out behind a couple hundred meters and its all thick forest and smaller rolling hills of stone.
the issue is when i look at it on google maps, about 400meters behind the hill is the road we take into the location that is somewhat regularly traveled by campers and canoes accessing lakes. (the road is at the bottom of a snall valley as well)
i decided this probably wasnt a great idea although the spot seemed perfect aside from the logging road 400m beyond the backstop.
i decided to reach out to a CO and ask for advice on a location and he directed me directly to a spot pretty close by and i went there and it was obviously used for target shooting (empty shells around). it was obvious where the backstop was, but what fucked with me is the fucking road is 200meters behind the backstop, and this road is way more busy and actually maintained for cottage access!!!! the backstop was essentially the same, 100 meters straight into a hill instead of a downward angle.
the CO mentioned 2 clearing side by side so i went to the other clearing to see if it was better, it was a flat clearing at the top of a hill, it was obvious it was used for shooting and the pile of stumps on the other side of the clearing was filled with bullet holes and remains of targets. but what was crazy, no backstop past the logs, it was actually downhill after the logs and 50 meters to an active ATV trail and 150M to a lake people camp on. nothing stopping bullets passing through the logs from hitting the atv trail or lake except some forest (very thick forest granted). ive even seen people shooting there on multiple occasions when i was camping in the area this summer.
so whats the deal? if the backstop is good, does it not really matter whats beyond? this is frustrating to me because i wouldn't feel comfortable shooting at the spots the CO showed me but its obvious they are being heavily used but when i ask people online or at the gun range they tell me ill be killing innocent children if theres any form of roads, campsites or trails within a KM of the backstop
