From when you sent your application how long did it take to get a received status? Do they email you or is this just something you have to keep checking? If I recall my instructor said to call after two weeks to make sure everything is in order because they wont tell you if you filled out your form incorrectly.

Dang, in BC bought a handgun from a NS retailer May 31 and still crickets.
6
u/TechnologyReady Radical Centrist Jun 29 '22
Well, it looks like Ontario is already processing orders from late on May 30th. That's not so bad. Honestly I'm surprised.
If they can process this many this fast, it would seem to indicate that the previous 4-week backlog was artificial (ie: not based on processing capacity, but based on some other time-based schedule).
5
u/Beretta_errata removeddit pro Jun 29 '22
May 30th was the first day of Justin Time level 2, the beginning of the handgun feeding frenzy.
3
u/TechnologyReady Radical Centrist Jun 29 '22
Yep, but it was mostly over by the 31st. There wasn't much left after that. By the end of June 1st for sure, just bits and bobs left.

Looking for PAL applicant from Saskatchewan for news interview regarding current wait times
I am a current PAL applicant who has been waiting three months for the RCMP to start working on my application. They haven't even opened the letter yet.
After seeing tons of news stories about the current debacle with passport wait times I decided to start emailing Canadian news agencies about wait times for firearm applications and renewals. If people are angry about waiting a couple days or weeks for a passport, surely it would be newsworthy to report on delays of four months or more for PAL applications!
Only one news agency, Global in Saskatchewan, replied and they are interested in an interview with an applicant from SK (I live next province over).
If anyone is interested, please DM me and I will get you set up with them. I am really hoping to get some mainstream coverage on this issue because it looks like I could be waiting up to an entire year for my application to be processed with all of these pistol transfers being added to the pile.
Thanks!

u/inderrawal Jun 28 '22

They haven't even opened the letter yet.
I am sure there is no evidence of that.
They open them an put them in the queue to deal with eventually. Watch for a credit card charge, then it will show up online in individual web services. Three or more months wait time.
5
u/presdint100 Jun 28 '22
So my pal was approved on June 8th and then the pal card printers broke so now apparently my card was now shipped out on the 23rd according to the cfo so here's hoping it comes this week

Question about PAL delivery wait times.
New pal holder here, license issued Thursday on the 17th of june. Still waiting for it to come in the mail and hearing some horror stories of people having to wait months!!! Anyone else in BC have experience with the wait times? Hoping it comes on monday, tommorow. That will be day 10.

u/ggdrguy Jun 26 '22
Usually 2 weeks from issue, the months wait is to actually get it processed. The problem is now is that apparently the machine they use to print the cards is broken so…🤷♂️
4
u/mjapix Jun 26 '22
Broken again??? I heard of a huge delay issue in 2019 with the printers but now would suck. It says 2 weeks then call but i have been told a few horror stories on wait times now and im loosing confidence. Really hoping it arrives this week. I heard they print on thursday and ship friday so thats what im hoping for.
2
u/ggdrguy Jun 26 '22
Even if they ship fridays you won’t be seeing snail mail rom nb to bc over the weekend… likely a week or more.

Mine was approved exactly 2 weeks ago, but no sign of my card :(( I wish they could provide temporary ones via email so we could shop asap
2
u/chief_robb Jun 27 '22
Or do like they do here in Alberta with drivers licenses. When you renew or get yours for the first time, you get a temporary paper that has all of the info on it. Good for 30 days.
It is really too bad they don't implement something like this for the PAL/RPAL renewals and new holders. Say this is valid for thirty days and needs to used in conjunction with government issued photo ID.
Perhaps this just makes too much sense....

Still waiting for my PAL license (Ontario):
application received: january 7, cc charged march 1
status on RCMP website: "We have completed the initial review of your firearms licence application. If additional information is required, you will be contacted. Please check the status again at a later date. "
CFOON response to my email: "Your application has been forwarded to the province for standard review of your background. Due to the high volume of applications we have a backlog, and your application is in the main queue to be assigned to a Firearms Officer. At this time, we are not able to provide a date of completion."

Cleaning/lubrication question.
Im new to firearms in general, after cleaning i have been applying a liberal amount of gun oil to all working parts and metal surfaces then letting sit for 5-10mins then just lightly wiping them all down with a dry cloth/rag. Am i on the right track/have the right idea?
4
u/ShinigamiZR Jun 27 '22
Most firearm instruction manuals usually comes with a section on gun care. Typically, you should be dropping 1-2 drops of oil on moving parts (eg in the slide rail of a handgun) and then actuate it a few times to spread it to where it needs to go. There shouldn't be any need to let the oil soak in

Hey everyone, new to pistols here. I got my Masada recently and went to double check the serial number of my registration with the one on the pistol just to make sure everything is correct. I see that in the registration paper i received there is an 8digit serial, but on my pistol i see only 4 digits.
These 4digits I see match the last 4digits of the serial number in the registration paper. but is it normal for Masada pistols to not show the first 4 digits of the serial? Thank you
3
u/BuyRelevant1000 Jun 28 '22
Masada is a truly underrated gun, sold my Glock to keep my Masada. Enjoy!
2
u/BuzzJr1 Combloc connoisseur Jun 27 '22
Where are you looking on the pistol for your serial number? The full “legal” serial number must be on the frame. They might put a shortened 4 digit serial number on other components, slide, barrel etc

u/Pavlivastos Jun 27 '22
Yeah my bad i found it was looking at the wrong place. I deleted my comment. Thanks for the help

I’m a little late to the party. But the site said it was gonna be down for a couple hours today. It’s back up and running fine now.
3
Jun 28 '22
Do they even bother calling the references anymore?
6
Jun 28 '22
Depends on your province and what you’re purchasing. I’m in QC, none of my references were ever called while getting my PAL/RPAL. It’s when I made my 1st restricted purchase back in OCT last year that they contacted both of them. They went through a 5-7 min interrogation with the QC CFO. The person then called me for a 5-7 minutes interrogation and then got my transfer approved. I honestly don’t know if any other provinces do this though.

Looking foreward to buying my first rifle soon.
I am stuck between getting a gsg-15, and a 10/22 (with a polymer "tactical" stock as on cabelas.ca)
Can anyone who owns one or both of these give me some feedback on which they would reccomend. I really like the looks and buttstock of the gsg, but the 10/22 is seemingly infinatley customizable due to the aftermarket for stocks, but the design and aesthetics of the gsg are extremely nice looking.
Any advice anyone?

I shot the 10/22 and own a GSG 15. The GSG is a neat little gun and the 10/22 is just a reliable workhorse.
I shot the 10/22 before I bought the GSG and honestly went for the GSG because there are no mag limits and I love to plink and have fun with .22LR, plus the special edition looks cool as shit with the folding stock.
It’s not a competition gun but my flagship rifle is a centerfire rifle right now.

Just recieved my pal, looking to buy my first .22 and deer rifle. I plan on using the .22 to improve my aim, and hunt with the other rifle. I was thinking of picking up a .308 win rifle, but I'm not sure.
Any suggestions on specific guns to look at? Not looking for anything crazy, just a couple solid beginner guns.

Cant go wrong with a Ruger 10/22
As for the deer rifle, lots of options, depends on your price range as well. Heard from quite a few people suggesting the Tikka T3x. I just picked one up myself in .308 WIN but havent had the chance to use it yet.2

Tikka T1X in .22. And a Tikka T3X in 308. Perfect combo. Both very nice guns that will serve you well, for not too much money. They even have some parts exchange.

Bought one from Select Shooting Supplies as well too back in May 31. For your new one did they ever give you a reference # yet?
First time buying a handgun and never got anything from them till this day. In my purchase history it says “Awaiting Fulfillment”?

I purchased (started the transfer of) a FNS-9 a couple days after the freeze announcement. It's a private seller. He got through and has a transfer number started. I just can't get through to complete it. It's been about a month.
I know people who bought around the same time or even after that have already had their transfers processed, but that was from a store. Is there a priority for store transfers over private?
I have no problem waiting, because I understand the system is completely overloaded. Just hoping someone can reassure me it will eventually be completed.
Or is there any tips or tricks to get through on the phone's?

The way I understand private restricted transfers, nothing will happen with it until you call in and provide your information to the CFP. Keep trying, you'll get in eventually.

Complete newbie here. Bare with me…
I just booked in for my non restricted and restricted fire arms course. Is there any point in going through with the application process at this point? Assuming the handgun ban goes into effect late sept or October?
(I have no real interest in owning long guns/ and zero interest in hunting.)

u/troviinstaller Jun 30 '22
You might aswell go for it, There is a chance the ban will be repealed if conservatives get into power eventually, or that it might not have passed by the time you get your license. Also, you might end up discovering other firearms you’re interested in that are not handguns. For example, I believe the vz61 skorpion isn’t legally a handgun so it might not be covered under the freeze

Don't assume that.

I was always under the impression that my registration certificate for a restricted firearm needed to accompany that restricted firearm wherever I took it, the range, for example. A colleague is trying to convince me that it doesn't state anywhere in law that this is the case. I know there is a provision in the law that says I can laminate my registrations certificate so it doesn't get worn out, but I can't see where it says it has to accompany the firearm.
What say the great minds of Reddit?

Your ATT conditions would state you need your registration certificates, if not there the criminal code says you need to hold a registration certificate. You technically do hold a registration certificate, but a police officer is allowed to confiscate your firearm if you can't produce it.
Seizure on failure to produce authorization
117.03 (1) Despite section 117.02, a peace officer who finds
(a) a person in possession of a prohibited firearm, a restricted firearm or a non-restricted firearm who fails, on demand, to produce, for inspection by the peace officer, an authorization or a licence under which the person may lawfully possess the firearm and, in the case of a prohibited firearm or a restricted firearm, a registration certificate for it, or
(b) a person in possession of a prohibited weapon, a restricted weapon, a prohibited device or any prohibited ammunition who fails, on demand, to produce, for inspection by the peace officer, an authorization or a licence under which the person may lawfully possess it,
may seize the firearm, prohibited weapon, restricted weapon, prohibited device or prohibited ammunition unless its possession by the person in the circumstances in which it is found is authorized by any provision of this Part, or the person is under the direct and immediate supervision of another person who may lawfully possess it.
The absolute chance of a police officer willing to do that is low, but why take the chance?

Anybody here get their RPAL after having their PAL for a while? My question to you is - did your license number change?
I ask, as I am waiting for my RPAL to go through and wondering if when it shows as issued on the website if my current number would work to start a restricted purchase. Mostly just because I've got time to wait and think.
3
u/Other-Negotiation328 Jun 30 '22
Yes. And yes.
I had same thought after I was approved. Your physical PAL# stays the same, but the last digit of the decimal changes. I believe this goes up everytime it's reprinted ( however everyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).
I had renewed my PAL last year, and didn't think to verify the decimal before I cut it up. Did RPAL and recieved the new lic with .0003 ( not sure if they knew I had 3 firearms or if it was my 3rd copy of a lic).
Either way I had to wait for my lic to purchase a restricted.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe, that the number will remain the same. And you won't even be issued a new license card, until after you make your first R purchase. When you get your R license... you don't really have an R license. You have R privileges. After you purchase your first R, you will be issued a new license, and it will have a new revision number on it. You're likely still on your first revision .0001 and that will just bump up to .0002.
On the back, where you should see "Possession Non-Restricted" and Acquisition Non-Restricted" it will add Restricted under each of those.

There was something wrong with my photo for upgrading to restricted pal and I was told to send a new photo in. Do i just send in the photo without anything or do i have to get a new sticker to put on the back? what do i do if i forgot who my guarantor was? I was also told that my application will be considered a new application and will be processed at the same time as others who sent in their new applications when i send my photo in, is this true? Do i have a chance of getting my rpal before the hamdgun ban?
2
Jul 01 '22
My photo was bad and they mailed me a notice and a new sticker and guarantor form to fill out. If they didn't send you that, I'd print off the guarantor page of the application and if you have no sticker, print off the page with the sticker and glue it to the back of a photo. I had to go to Walmart to get mine printed on proper photo paper

u/Guaaac Jul 01 '22
Thanks, how long did it take for your to get your pal after sending the photo in?

Friend was preparing to move and was going through a few old chests. stumbled upon his grandpa's (what we believe to be a WW2 era) cooey shotgun. he's unknowingly had this in his possession since 1997. what should he do if he doesn't have a license?

u/Beretta_errata removeddit pro Jul 01 '22
Have a licenced friend COME OVER AND TAKE POSSESSION don't take it anywhere.
Take the course, get the license, take the heirloom back.

Quickly give it to somebody with a license probably. Or tell the RCMP he found it but I would highly recommend NOT doing that

Can someone point me to a link that states the requirements to have registration papers and such for transporting restricted firearms? I'm curious to know the actual wording of the laws, but I'm having a hard time finding what I'm looking for.

Perfect! It's really that last section about "failure to produce" that is key.

What's everyone waiting for transfers in Alberta? I ordered a restricted on June 1st, still waiting. Called the gun shop, they said no word from the RCMP, keep waiting essentially. I've tried calling the CFO about 25 times over the last few weeks, but no luck getting through.
Edit: I already own restricted firearms and have an ATT. No mail from RCMP.

Howdy folks Planning to buy an SKS but all inventory is kinda shitty B grade. Honor guard is $700+. Not looking at ATI stock ones, basically need a laminate or wooden good shooter, matching numbers will be bonus without breaking the bank. Should i wait for any new shipments(if coming) or just sift through whatever is available?? It aint cheap right now so if i pull the trigger now and some good quality shipments come in some time… cant decide. Plz chime in

Ordered my 1st restricted from Cabela's about a month ago
Got an email saying the transfer has been approved and "As per Bill C42, Authorization to Transport conditions within your province of residence are now attached to your licence."
Does that mean that I don't need a physical ATT? And once the firearm is shipped to me I'm good to go?
