Shitpost / Memes Canadian Tire BB and airgun policy

u/CommercialOk7295 Aug 04 '26
My local CT doesn't even record anything for real ammo. Visual pal check and that's it. For guns they go through the verification, but they follow the letter of the law and nothing more.
Keep in mind it is my understanding that canadian tire gun sales are separate from CT corporate, it's up to each individual store owner if and how they participate.

A few years ago one just outside Winnipeg wanted a second piece of government issued photo ID. He kept saying they needed valid ID and I kept explaining that my RPAL was valid ID. Finally he said we need a second piece due to too many fake PAL’s coming thru the store. That was a new one for me.

u/mischling2543 Aug 05 '26
Wait if a PAL is valid government ID, could I theoretically board a domestic flight with it?

u/Johnny-Unitas Aug 04 '26
I had that happen a year at a local lgs. I had bought there before and all I needed was my PAL. They now want an additional piece of id.
2
u/EngorgedGorilla Aug 04 '26
I'm glad they stopped with the ammo log book that was occasionally left out in the open for anyone to peruse.
3
u/FRANK_R-I-Z-Z-O Aug 04 '26
They still do it (at least in the CTC I was in, in London, Onterrible).
Having never purchased ammo there before, I was unaware that this was the way they recorded it.
When the person working there wanted my RPAL to hand write the info in a binder, that had been sitting on the shelf above the ammo display, completely unsecured and unattended, I opted to take my purchases elsewhere, that practiced better control over access to that info. Would it ever become a problem? Unlikely, but should that binder ever go missing, at least my info isn't in it.

u/Eglitarian Aug 05 '26
Gobles is the place to go in London anyway, support your local gun store.
1
u/FRANK_R-I-Z-Z-O Aug 05 '26
I usually buy from Santarosaa's in Rodney.
The handful of times I have gone into Gobles I have felt like I've been interrupting something or I'm an inconvenience to whoever was working. Your mileage may vary, but that's just my experience.
1
u/Longjumping_Rain_483 Aug 04 '26
ah that makes sense. Both of the ones i've gone to required them to write down my PAL info etc
1
u/waitwhatnothing Aug 04 '26
In Ontario it’s a thing that retailers have to log ammo purchases. Something the CFO requires.

Samegoes for bear spray.
19
u/ryan9991 ALBERTA Aug 04 '26
Purchases are recorded but not submitted to anyone unless crimes are committed with bear spray in the area afaik

u/grathontolarsdatarod Aug 04 '26
I'd like to hear about even once incident where that has happened.

iirc there was a recent shooting of two teens in Hamilton in retaliation for a bear spray attack

u/cassidyharlow Aug 04 '26
Just buy from your local firearms retailer if you want an airgun. CT corporate policy is above and beyond whats needed. They recorded ammo before if was even required.

u/K0bra_Ka1 Aug 04 '26
I'm gonna get downvoted to oblivion, but the reality is that a lot of shitty criminals who can't buy a real illegal handgun use an airsoft one because it looks so similar. There has to be some mechanism to discourage shit criminals from doing shit criminal things.
91
u/vARROWHEAD Aug 04 '26
A mechanism like holding people accountable for their crimes?
33
u/Jimbo_Slice1919 Aug 04 '26
That would require our judges to actually do their jobs.
2
u/Stunning_Issue_9524 2d ago
It's actually not the judge that is the problem. Correctional facilities are staffed with absolute lazy slobs and there is zero rehabilitation. It's literally like the movie Blow. Go in for something ridiculous like stealing groceries, come out with connections to buy handguns and get fronted kilos of Cocaine. It's a private criminal network inside while the guards watch YouTube and play on their phone

Just going to point out that recording the name of a person who buys one does help hold people accountable if they commit crimes with them.
Not saying it is right - but your argument isn’t the checkmate you seem to think it is.
-6
u/FightingShibas Aug 04 '26
Punishment isn’t a deterrent unfortunately.
11
u/vARROWHEAD Aug 04 '26
Hard to commit these kind of crimes while incarcerated
-3
u/FightingShibas Aug 04 '26
That doesn’t deter them from doing it in the first place. It only delays another offence for most of them.
5
3
u/Glad_Impact_7532 Aug 04 '26
It most definitely is. Anyone of us is scared to go to jail because we'd get the book thrown at us. Meanwhile criminals get a pass. It's a serious issue.
-2
u/dsac Aug 04 '26
Just so we're clear, your take is that people are scared to be criminals because the punishment is severe, but also the people who are not scared to be criminals are treated too lightly and should face more severe punishments.

u/hunterofsteelhead Aug 04 '26
Many criminals are always steps ahead of laws. Theyll just get somebody else to buy it for them like they do with straw buyers in the US for their actual firearms. And/or these will be passed around secondhand
5
u/OhNoACanadian Aug 04 '26
Discourage the guy from walking into a store when they can have it delivered to their door from an online shop or Amazon?
7
u/ChrisPedds Aug 04 '26
Harsher penalties for repeat offenders would be where I would like to start. Third offense of theft, loose a digit. 4th offense loose 2 and keep increasing.
-2
u/KatasaSnack Aug 04 '26
dude thats fucking barbaric
2
2
u/ChrisPedds Aug 04 '26
They had 2 chances to get their shit together. By their 5th offense theft is no longer as easy as it was before.
-1
u/KatasaSnack Aug 04 '26
this is the shit that just makes crime worse dude, im not saying be all set him free but fuck me you genuinely think mutilating people for committing crimes regardless of reason is acceptable in society?
whats next shooting women for going to school?
2
u/Murray3-Dvideos Aug 04 '26
The ex convicts i used to work with would always say this: "dont do the crime if u cant do the time". Its easy to read the fact for Canada is that the penalties criminals face aren't strick enough in this country. Im personally a fan of creating VERY remote Labor camps.
0
u/KatasaSnack Aug 04 '26
as much as i wanna criticize “dont do the crime if you cant do the time” i feel like we wont really have a productive conversation if were so far apart as we seem to be so i think maybe agree to disagree on this one
1
u/Murray3-Dvideos Aug 05 '26
Im just echoing what they said. Not a motto I'd obviously live by. But its certainly something they appearently did as they all served varying degrees of time.
9
u/ryan9991 ALBERTA Aug 04 '26
Better get at dollarama and everything you can get Amazon or any other online retailer.
Seems like futile efforts for such edge cases.
It’s already treated as a firearms charge even if it’s not a firearm which is a fair measure. But a registry for this seems like a joke

u/ThatBigFuckoffTree Aug 04 '26
Mad facts, worked the gun counter ar Cabelas for a year. Saw way more sketchy characters looking to do dangerous and/or illegal stuff with the BB Guns, knives, machetes, axes etc. Than real firearms.
1
u/HoneyGlazedSlut Aug 04 '26
Pretty sure this one's a case of survival of the fittest... I'd love to see footage of someone upping BB on a real criminal. Some problems solve themselves 😂😂
1
1
u/Murray3-Dvideos Aug 04 '26
Why r we trying to prevent criminals from obtaining these ? They are literally one of the most harmless tools they could choose to use. What would you rather take to the chest ? A shot from a real gun? A 4 inch knife blade ? Or a conical pellet from a 500fps pellet gun ? These airguns are a bluff that at worst will take your eyesight or maybe severely damage your throat. Knives, bludgening devices and real guns will take your life.
2
u/K0bra_Ka1 Aug 04 '26
1
u/Murray3-Dvideos Aug 04 '26
But the fact remains thats its not generally lethal. Nobody's actually going to loose their life to these encounters unlike when a real weapon is used. Criminals resorting to using airsoft to commit crimes is an improvement to public safety.
3
u/K0bra_Ka1 Aug 04 '26
I agree it's 100% proof our licensing system works and makes the gun buyback pointless in actually reducing crime.
But I think you are missing the forrest for the trees. It's more common to brandish a firearm during a robbery than actually use one
2
u/Murray3-Dvideos Aug 04 '26
I aint missing anything, our Law Enforcement is when they continously pursue the route of banning these devices while appearently being blind to the fact that its sucess will just force the criminals to once again pick up REAL weapons that ultimately leads to innocent life being lost.

Ok, wont be buying any ammo, targets or anything hunting related at CT now

For the safety of public BB gun can penetrate the eyes or head and the youth don’t have morals or guilt.

u/EnvironmentalFox7532 Aug 04 '26
CT I shop at only does the bare minimum visual PAL check, and verification when buying a firearm. They only keep records of the purchase for the minimum required time and delete the info. Only info the government gets is notified that you had a reference number. Valid for 3 months and you can buy 1 gun or 10. I bought three on one number 2 months apart. Owner is a big time gun guy and the gun counter guy is too.
And they keep this info on a flash drive only which is kept in the safe, no hard drives, not in the cloud. They take privacy and the rights we have left serious.
3
u/BrotherLefthand Aug 04 '26
That's the new law, is it not? Or was the bill not passed and CT is enforcing it for fun?
5
u/Agent_1812 https://youtu.be/mrAwb9ptu9U Aug 04 '26
the big retailers liked to record ammo sales before it was law
this is overkill
1
u/Aspenkarius Aug 04 '26
What new law? I haven’t heard anything about a law affecting the sale of pellets or BBs

Shop elsewhere. Lots of places sell airguns and accessories. Canadian Tire is convenient for me but their security is occasionally stupid and fucking insulting. "Let me just carry this to the cashier for you...".

Canadian tire is a rip off for firearm related things. And the store might asweell be called chinese junk only

u/DougMacRay617 Aug 04 '26
Recorded with what? An ID? Lmfao i understand the purpose but its pretty futile to record someones ID especially if they don't have a gun license,
