Milsurps / Prohib M1 Garand Thoughts
I would really like to get another M1 Garand ( had one in the 90s I had to let go, for $350). I know that no one can predict the future here but what are the odds it ends up on the list?

I enjoy shooting mine, they are expensive though. Ammo is cheaper than .303
1
u/Accomplished-Beat779 Mar 15 '26
Yes the ammo is still reasonable, I sold my .303 due to ammo cost. I would love to have an M1 again

u/1anre Mar 16 '26
Your 1st one set you back how much and what year was that?
1
u/Accomplished-Beat779 Mar 16 '26
Id say $300, it was about 1994, a beautiful Springfield in 3006, sold around 2000 for $350 Thats what they went for then

It's essentially a Liberal cult at this point. It's all cult think. Cult members are not allowed to question the cult, so there are no reality checks any more. If you're inside the cult, you become disconnected from reality

So like a swamp?
And all the bench crossers will suddenly wake up tomorrow with differing views on things they strongly believed in while at their previous party?

Always a risk until we get the cons back in office

All the more reason to try and attack people from new communities into Canada’s firearm community. It’s not like anyone is moving here for idiotic restrictions.

I think we are making the same point. The more we have gun ranges and clubs that appeal to first and second generation Canadians the better. Getting PAL courses to more people is better too. A lot of people come to Canada escaping places where there is a lack of freedom and bringing back more freedom to own a firearm should appeal more people to a party like the CPC - not turn new voters away.
1
u/1anre Mar 16 '26
That's right, but thinking the cons are the answer because if false promises is ludicrous.
Newer Canadian should enjoy the gun culture benefits Canada provides, and it shouldn't be a political decider.
1
u/1anre Mar 16 '26
That's true. Some like the constrained freedom to own guns here, unlike not even being able to touch one from where they came from without smelling jail time.

u/Callie7680 Mar 16 '26
Oh I 100% agree with you. It’s not looking good for us. But one day. One day we will be back

u/1anre Mar 16 '26
Cons ain't going to revert shit. Just gonna play y'all like a fiddle all over again.
So funny

u/outline8668 Mar 17 '26
At the risk of getting into a worthless political debate here, with the conservatives things probably won't get any worse than they already are. With the liberals they definitely will.

For the price they go for I see it as to big of a risk personally. Friend has one so I just use his when we go… Also painful to hear $350
9
u/Accomplished-Beat779 Mar 15 '26
Yes its hard to justify the price tag...mine was an original in 30-06...in the 90s all this milsurp stuff was dirt cheap. I got a never fired M44 for $99 at LeBaron , M91s were $100 etc....

No one can tell you if it’ll be on the list or not. My two cents, if it doesn’t hurt you financially, and you want one, get it. It’s NR, so no one knows you have it.
I personally am happy to have rather than never have.

Good longterm investment from what people are saying.
$3,500 for a decent one
3
u/Accomplished-Beat779 Mar 15 '26
I am kind of looking at it a along term investment as well...they are beautiful too

u/Plasma_48 Mar 15 '26
Why are they so expensive? Is it not possible for people to purchase and import CMP garands that are around $1150 USD?
7
u/cumbrad Mar 15 '26
Importing is expensive because you need to go through someone with an FFL on the US side AND an export license, AND a Canadian business firearms license, AND pay duties. And they’re not $3500 unless you’re buying a scoped one (M1D or M1C) or a matching collector one. you can get a good shooter grade for sub $2750. Still way too much imo but it is what it is.
2
u/Plasma_48 Mar 16 '26
Don’t you not have to go through that with irunguns or other importers? Send it to them, pay $200 plus duties, receive it in Canada for ~$2000 all in, assuming the Garand was a CMP expert grade at $1150 USD. I get it’s not as easy as buying an already imported one, but isn’t it worth it to save $750 and get one in great shape with a new barrel? Is there something I don’t understand?
3
u/cumbrad Mar 16 '26
It’s hard to get CMP garands as a Canadian, you would be buying from the secondhand market which is much more expensive specifically for Garands (much closer to the Canadian market once currency conversion is factored in) then you’re paying $200 and duties to irunguns (who is the FFL and then they send it to themselves in Canada) on top of that.

u/1anre Mar 16 '26
What guns did Canada mainly use in WW2? I'm guessing it's wasn't the commie SKS', but ironically, that's what's flooded the Canadian retro gun market now and first to be advised to buy.
Why weren't there stockpiles of M1s or whatever guns used in the war available as massive surpluses to Canadians, even decades later?
1
u/outline8668 Mar 17 '26
They were available but they really weren't considered desirable. And you could still get cheap surplus 303 for your $15 Lee Enfield if you wanted a cheap milsurp to blast.
6
u/Q-Ball7 In the end, it's taxes all the way down Mar 15 '26
$1150 USD?
Yeah, that comes out to about 2400CAD after the exchange rate, import fees, and shipping.
The extra 400CAD is if you want it in one week rather than 4.

u/boozefiend3000 Mar 15 '26
350? God damn, I wish. But, buy one. Non restricted, even if banned they won’t know you have one. I’d rather have one in my possession then never being able to own one again

u/ScorpionRox Mar 16 '26
Does it shoot bullets?? Will be on the list. Does it propel a projectile... will be on the list. Does it look like something that can do A or B?? Probably on the list.
Okokokokok. Very pessimistic, but in all seriousness, I feel stonewalled with any desire to expand my collection, simply because someone else is going decide I am, apparently, not capable of owning something I have the certification to own.
Aannnnddd rant over. 😆

I keep expanding my collection, I own a few of the remaining semi centerfires and they honestly see way less use than my levers and bolt guns. I still love my semis, but I personally really enjoy manual action guns and find them more engaging in some ways.
Nice lever guns are also almost beautiful works of art and still worth collecting too.

I have one and I believe unless you really are into milsurp (vs semi-auto in general) there are better choices. It’s heavy and limited use in practical shooting. But I don’t bench shoot… I’m only in the field.

I had 3 boys in sports....needed rhe cash. We never foresaw them going up 10x
2
u/1anre Mar 16 '26
Hope those boys went pro?, cause I'd want payback if they never did anything serious with the talent
2
u/Accomplished-Beat779 Mar 16 '26
Hahhaaha unfortunately not. I had ao many cool milsurps that I had to let go.. Nagant Sniper, Enfield no5, Lungman, m44, etc....try not to tbink about it lol
2
u/Plumbercanuck Mar 16 '26
Buy it. Take on canoe duck hunting trip in the as a bear deterent gun......

u/Sad-Equivalent9486 Mar 18 '26
Just make sure it doesn’t have a modified barrel that might put you in the prohib category.

u/Dizzy-Wedding5769 Mar 25 '26
Bought a sks for 400 and was pissed because I could’ve paid 350. Now I’m laughing.
2
u/Accomplished-Beat779 Mar 25 '26
Exactly. We never knew what we had at the time. Just assume that will continue
2
u/Dizzy-Wedding5769 Mar 26 '26
It’s the only semi I have left that’s not prohibited and it’s my baby. I have 3 stocks/extra parts as I just don’t have the funds to buy another gun and this is gonna last me forever forever

2
u/Shitmonkey5425 Mar 15 '26
If you can get a good one yes, recently I’ve seen more unusable ones than decent ones so they can be a bit of a risky buy
1
u/1anre Mar 16 '26
How did you test to know the unusable ones? Not like the owner'd let you send a few rounds through it
1
u/Shitmonkey5425 Mar 23 '26
That’s where it gets tricky, some stuff is easy to spot like I recently came across one with a worn out op rod track so it’d pop off of the receiver, another one the trigger group latch was off so that it wouldn’t stay engaged, but stuff like headspace issues are head to catch without gages or shooting them. You kinda just have to be meticulous about them and not be too eager so that you make a bad purchase
1
u/Agonizing-Stroke1812 Mar 15 '26
Spending $3000 on a well-used gun from 80 years ago is a tough pill to swallow for me, especially considering the sheer number of them out there - it's not exactly some rare gun. It's also a very obvious candidate for a future ban since it's one of the last semi autos available. No clue how or why it didn't get swept up in the last couple of OICs where they targeted a bunch of super niche WWII rifles. You can argue that "everything" will eventually get banned, which is probably true, but the M1 is very likely fairly imminent.

u/Accomplished-Beat779 Mar 16 '26
Those are pretty similar to my thoughts. Its definitely a gamble. Ill have to think a lot about it. Thanks for your thoughts
1
u/outline8668 Mar 17 '26
Because the legislation they were passing specifically mentioned detachable mags and the guns they put on the list had to relate to that legislation if the liberals didn't want it to be able to be thrown out in court.

$3000 on a gun would be considered a decent long range build or a decent O/U shotgun... there are levels to this hobby

u/Accomplished-Beat779 Mar 15 '26
I dont disagree with overpriced. Ill probably just shoot my SKS for now...thanks

u/CAFirearmSociety Mar 15 '26
I recently spent $2800 on a rifle that was worth $100 in the 90s. What it use to sell means nothing, in 10 years you will regret not buying the milsurp you want today.
