Milsurps / Prohib M1 Garand Thoughts

I would really like to get another M1 Garand ( had one in the 90s I had to let go, for $350). I know that no one can predict the future here but what are the odds it ends up on the list?

Why are they so expensive? Is it not possible for people to purchase and import CMP garands that are around $1150 USD?

Importing is expensive because you need to go through someone with an FFL on the US side AND an export license, AND a Canadian business firearms license, AND pay duties. And they’re not $3500 unless you’re buying a scoped one (M1D or M1C) or a matching collector one. you can get a good shooter grade for sub $2750. Still way too much imo but it is what it is.

Don’t you not have to go through that with irunguns or other importers? Send it to them, pay $200 plus duties, receive it in Canada for ~$2000 all in, assuming the Garand was a CMP expert grade at $1150 USD. I get it’s not as easy as buying an already imported one, but isn’t it worth it to save $750 and get one in great shape with a new barrel? Is there something I don’t understand?

It’s hard to get CMP garands as a Canadian, you would be buying from the secondhand market which is much more expensive specifically for Garands (much closer to the Canadian market once currency conversion is factored in) then you’re paying $200 and duties to irunguns (who is the FFL and then they send it to themselves in Canada) on top of that.

What guns did Canada mainly use in WW2? I'm guessing it's wasn't the commie SKS', but ironically, that's what's flooded the Canadian retro gun market now and first to be advised to buy.

Why weren't there stockpiles of M1s or whatever guns used in the war available as massive surpluses to Canadians, even decades later?

They were available but they really weren't considered desirable. And you could still get cheap surplus 303 for your $15 Lee Enfield if you wanted a cheap milsurp to blast.
