Applied and living in the province of New Brunswick

I applied for my PAL in March of 2026. It was reviewed and assigned to a Firearms Officer (I reached out after a few weeks just to ensure things were in order), and subsequently required a report from a Dr due to depression in the past (while I was serving due to an injury I recieved, I am ok now).

The required paperwork for my Dr was mailed to me and my Dr filled it out and mailed it back themself. They told me they've done a ton of these and it was no issue. After a few months I reached out to the Provincial Firearms Office and was told they had never recieved anything. I checked with my Dr and they ensured me that they 100% filled it out and mailed it correctly.

I emailed the Firearms Office back and relayed what my Dr had said, but I've recieved zero response.

I don't want to bug them, but I'd really like my PAL. Shooting is something I really miss from when I was in the CAF, and I'd love to continue it as a hobby. The phone number for the Provincial Firearms Office is never answered by a human and only leaves the option to leave a message. It's been over a month since I last recieved any form of response between phone and email.

Has anyone else ever experienced them "not receiving" medical paperwork? The paperwork stated it had to be returned within 60 days, is the fact it somehow got lost going to be an issue? Is me reaching out to them this many times going to annoy them? I know with VA if you don't pester them, nothing gets done - I don't know if this is a similar situation. I am aware they're overworked and have a ton of applicants, but it's been 5 months now and I'd hate for my application to get rejected due to the paperwork mishap

Does the BC CFO generally have a better reputation for service times than the Ontario CFO?

Hey, so my PAL expired. I had to complete another paper application because it was expired more than 6 months. I just didnt think I'd ever go hunting again, but then things changed.

I have my restricted and non restricted. However, I don't have any guns. I normally just used my dad's.

I sent in the application and I wanted to do both restricted and non restricted just to keep them both, in case one day it's legal to buy a handgun.

I was charged 93.84, which is the restricted fee. And that's all that I was charged. The non restricted is like 70$, I was expecting to pay like 120$

I figured both should be charged but that's not the case.

I'm concerned that I'm only getting my restricted..

Or does having restricted exceed the non restricted and therefore I only need to pay the bigger fee which covers both licenses??

Thoughts? I've tried calling but can't get through right now.

I submitted my PAL and RPAL application in January 2025 and I'm still waiting for a decision.

For full transparency, I disclosed on my application that I received a conditional discharge for assault and robbery charges 16 years ago. The conditional discharge was completed over 15 years ago.

It's been 13 months with no update, so I contacted my MP for assistance, but they weren't able to help. I then emailed the Premier's Office, and shortly after, I received a call from the OPP. They advised that someone would reach out within a month.

That was 3 months ago, and I still haven't heard back. Every time I call for an update, I'm told the file is "on the area officer's desk" and that they'll email the officer.

Has anyone dealt with a similar delay involving older charges and a conditional discharge? What would you recommend as the next step to get a response or move the file forward?

Hi All - Moving from the GTA to Alberta. It's hard to ignore how much time is saved by travelling through Windsor into the US rather than up and over Superior - which I'm not thrilled about doing in a loaded full size u-haul. What do I need to know as far as travelling with firearms is concerned?

Has anyone in Ontario successfully received an SFC .22 LR handgun exemption letter for Olympic/bullseye shooting?

I’m from Windsor, Ontario, and I’m a member of Windsor Action Pistol Club, which offers a bullseye pistol league.

I’m trying to figure out what proof the SFC actually requires. I’ve found plenty of posts from people in BC and Alberta who were approved, but very little information from Ontario.

I currently have a .22 LR pistol that I’ve legally borrowed for six months, and I plan to use it in the club’s bullseye league. I’m just trying to understand what hoops I need to jump through before I apply.
What documents or evidence did you submit? Did they ask for proof of competition, club membership, training, or anything else?

Any advice or experiences from Ontario would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Bought my Carmel from IRUN 1 month ago. Import has arrived in CAD facility in AB and now just waiting for CFO transfer as it says on my account. It’s my first purchase of a restricted. Anyone know how long it usually takes for this process? Thanks

I'll preface this with, I will be contacting the CFO, but I wanted to know if anyone has done this recently, or at least since all fo the changes that were made to restricted firearms.

I'm going to be doing a 2 year work secondment overseas and I'll be selling my house. I have a few handguns that I would like to store temporarily at a family members house, who does have his RPAL.

I've seen some info online about temporary storage for various reasons. I wasn't sure if there's a max length of time that I could do this for.

I don't want to relinquish them and get nothing for them. If at some point the laws change again and I can sell them, I would most likely sell them to the family member. Worst case, if I decide to stay overseas and have to reliquish them in a few years, I'll make that decision then. I would hope to not have to do it now.

Just wondering what options one has if they potentially possess a firearm that has made the ban/restricted list. I'd ideally not like to sell it back to the gov't if I can avoid it, and am holding out for the law changing in the future. However I recently saw something that said the gun must be permanently disabled. I was planning on just removing the firing pin to disable the firearm, however I heard the barrel must be welded shut to permanently disable it. Please advise me if possible. What other options do I have with the firearms? Would I be able to transfer them or gift them to family I have in the states? Thanks in advance.

I want to build a blackpowder firearm. I got the stock, flintlock and trigger without my pal. I buy my parts off a auction site which says I need pal for any firearm barrel. Can I just get a barrel machined for this or should I just get my pal

In Canada, what firearm-related things are legal to 3D print? I know receivers are illegal to print, but what about things like chassis and stocks?

As far as I know, in order to sell ammunition legally (individual to individual), a PAL holder must verify the buyer's PAL.

My question : Is it legally required to verify the buyer's PAL through the RCMP PAL portal (the one you use to update your PAL info, verify PAL number, etc)? I think it's not required, because as far as I know, legal gun stores only look physically at the PAL card and that's it (for selling ammunition).

I want to educate myself on this subject.

With this, how come likes of Akdas Alcor 223 is being sold in Canada?

- Designed and Manufactured in 2024.

- Originally was designed for 5 10 or 20 round detachable box mag.

How come it has not been classified as prohibited?

Another Example:

Celik Arms Chimera. It was introduced in Canada last year. It shows up on their youtube 1 year back. It is not an old design, it seems a brand new product! And its original design has a 5 round and a 10 round AR 15 magzine.

So, More importantly, how will this affect import of new firearms designed after december 2023?

Let‘s be honest, they’re eventually coming for everything - semi auto shotguns and 22lr, any other gun that isn’t pump, bolt or lever action, and probably those too at some point. Considering that every cool center fire semi auto has already been prohibited, if the Liberals prohibit the SKS it would make their confiscation virtually impossible. There are 2 million + firearms owners in Canada, and the SKS is one of the most ubiquitous guns in Canada. They would have to assume at least 1 million of those licensed gun owners are more likely than not to have one in their collection, and given the embarrassingly low number of firearms declared to date, we can confidently assume that probably no more than 5-10% of all SKS would be voluntarily handed over. So that would put the government in the very unfavourable position of either knocking on 2 million doors, or admitting their gun confiscation is a complete failure. There would be no way to paint it as a success. It is well known how many SKS are in private possession, and that the vast majority would still be out there after October 30th would be front page news and completely embarrass the Liberal government. 1 million civilly disobedient firearms owners would be the most powerful political stance we could ever hope to make in the face of this gun grab.

For the past 10 days or so, I've been trying to get through to the Ontario CFO to obtain a firearm borrowing ATT. I sent an email to apply 10 days ago and have called numerous times.

Seems like they have been closed throughout and unable to get through on call.

Any advice?

So I recently have gone down a rabbit hole for long range precision shooting, and i'm watching a lot of these guys down in the states, they build their platforms from scratch with all custom parts that they assemble themselves. and it got me wondering about how that might work in canada.

im aware you can add custom parts to existing guns but pretty much all of these guys that im seeing are not starting from an existing gun and its all separate parts from different manufacturers and then assembling it.

I've spent a good couple hours on google, searching about the legality of building your own gun in canada but pretty much everything i'm finding is on eighty percent receivers or 3d printed ghost guns. so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with that, is there any kind of special process that you have to go about when doing it?

Edit- thanks for the info it seems some people are thinking I want to make my own receiver. I'm not looking to make a receiver just all market parts and the assembling them.

Really excited about getting my first gun and been looking at different builds here. I had a question regarding the stowaway.

I’ve been seeing posts here and YouTube with the stowaway swapped with the 5 inch barrel. Someone here said his over all length was under 26 inches.

There was a comment that said because it’s manual action and fixed stock it would still be considered non restricted even though it’s under 26 inches.

By that logic could you take a renegade and install short stock and barrel? Being under 26 inches would it be considered non restricted as well?
