Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread
Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.
First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.
This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.
To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.
We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.
Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

I hate the gun control debate because those in favor of gun control rarely know anything about firearms, laws, and crime statistics.
All of their arguments, all of them, are easily refutable as well as just being slogans they recite like robots.
Saw an Instagram thread, some guy going on about how outlawing all guns will stop gun crime. Someone responded that 90% of gun crime in Canada is done with illegal firearms. His response was yeah, banning all guns would stop that. How can you have discourse when the response makes 0 sense. They can’t grasp that OUTLAWED firearms are just brought in from the US. Why are we the ones punished by the actions of criminals.
Also, they backup gun control “success” with examples from island countries (UK, Japan, Australia, South Korea technically an island since gun-smuggling from North Korea seems impossible). Gun control CANNOT work simply due to geography, we are next to an open border with the largest firearms market, with corrupt border security if criminals want to bypass the wilderness.
I’ve also seen people compare firearm registration to voting registry, which is just a terrible false equivalency. We register go vote to prevent fraud and to PROVE that you are who you are. Firearms registries don’t do that, we already have licenses, a registry is just a door for the government to micromanage your property and use it to take away your firearms. No point of a registry when criminals wont even register their firearms, so this does NOTHING.
Lastly I’m tired of the doomerism surrounding the idea that Canada doesn’t allow self defence and that it’s illegal. Self defence has always been proportional. The problem is people cite cases where there is obvious negligence on the homeowner. Seriously, if the intruder is RETREATING and you discharge your firearm OUTSIDE your home at them, you are endangering the public at that point, even in the US you would be arrested for this.

Gun control like any control works as long as most people bother to follow the law and the social contract of the region. Sadly governments keep changing the social contract to screw regular people more and more hence making any controls less and less worth the paper they're written on. Because frankly the government in Canada's case at least has no realistic way of enforcing all it's many many laws it has made over the years and mostly relies on people simply respecting them. But as the laws stop respecting the people and with no increased enforcement then that whole thing starts to fall apart.

Finland, Switzerland... You really can keep adding to the list of countries that are actually reasonable. The issue is the government seldom is. I once saw one of the older public safety minsters maybe Marco Mendico claim in a interview that France had banned handguns… You can’t make this shit up.

u/Otherwise_Rub_9515 Sep 02 '26
My neighbour was a fudd that said he supports the bans...it literally made my stomach turn and I started ignoring him.
3
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 08 '26
Did you ask him specially if he knew what guns have been banned? As there have been a lot of guns that are considered 'fudd' guns banned now.
8
u/Otherwise_Rub_9515 Sep 08 '26
Nope, he said civilians shouldn't own handguns or semi autos and he supports the bans.
Absolutely disgusting

What’s hilarious is they have literally banned single shot rifles and shotguns. So he doesn’t even know what they have banned lol.

People love to drastically over-simplify things without paying any particular attention to nuance and real world realities to put it kindly.
Yes, banning and un-inventing all firearms would stop firearm crime in the same way that all of the water evaporating on earth would stop drownings. Meanwhile, stabbings, beatings and other means of killing people goes on.
Governments and militaries want firearms. So long as there are places that manufacture them, corrupt people will be there to divert some of that to the black market. Guns are also not very complicated objects to make, and to prevent people from making them, you’d have to prohibit everyone from buying building materials. Throw in 3D printing, and the idea of prohibition being an effective policy is pie-in-the-sky fantasy codswallop. Nothing more than pearl-clutching brainrot being repeated by people who were told they were “super smart” for their age a bit too much.
People also conveniently ignore cultural aspects as well. Hunting is still a huge part of Canadian culture, whereas in Japan, Australia and Korea it isn’t.
“You don’t need to hunt to survive anymore!”
You don’t need privacy to survive either. Turns out that this philosophy of having to demonstrate a need for everything versus the greater good is working against us, not for us. Who would have thought that the world’s most annoying argument would eventually go on to fuck everyone over? How the turn tables.
Australia views hunting as a redneck pastime and more in line with pest control than anything else. Only wealthy people in Japan belong to hunting clubs, and I’m not sure about Korea.
Guns are also heavily politicized in Canada whereas in the aforementioned countries, there is a much broader consensus in favour of gun bans. Our government doesn’t even really want to ban the SKS because they can’t without invoking the wrath of First Nations people, and an exemption for First Nations undermines the whole argument that these guns are unsuitable for hunting.
In these other countries, G46 would have been passed into law with no issue. Our government had to withdrawal the list because it caused such an uproar. As the ASFCP rollout has shown us, you need the buy-in for policy to work, and almost the entire country is against it which puts anything resembling a Japanese, Australian or Korean style gun-control regime out of the question. All it would accomplish is driving everything underground as we have no means to enforce a partial ban, let alone a complete one.
Japan is an interesting argument that people use because they completely overlook the fact that civilians have been largely prohibited from owning weapons as far back as the 1500’s, starting with the “great sword hunt”. It’s ingrained into their culture. Japanese commoners were constantly revolting and so Japan disarmed their civilian population with the express purpose to keep the ruling class in place. From that point onward, only Samurai and the elite could own weapons.
It makes me cringe when people cite Japans gun control regime because, to use progressive language, they’re praising something that was put in place to facilitate societal oppression. It wasn’t a public safety initiative or “common sense gun control”, it’s literally a component of the elite controlling the peasants that spanned centuries. Guns were banned the second they were invented for no other reason than to protect the elite. People need to stop cherry-picking and whitewashing shit.
You look at any of the recent news articles about growing PAL numbers and you’ll learn that a lot of the people applying for PALs are people who have immigrated to Canada from countries that did not permit firearms ownership. So clearly, even if you come from a society that frowned upon guns, people still want them so I guess places like Japan aren’t this super-uber awesome mega utopia where everyone hates guns the end.
So yeah, there are many people whose ideas of gun control just suck. Low effort. Big on end-goals with no real idea of how anything currently works, would work or even work out. The extent of people’s knowledge on the subject is the extent of how much they dislike something and how many brain-dead, uninformed opinions they can jam into a comment while their arrogant buddies all give each other self-congratulatory jazz-hands and call it a “mic-drop” moment when really it’s just people who advertise they live a completely sheltered existence and don’t realize the world extends beyond their favourite Starbucks.

Australia funnily enough does have a hunter culture just small. As it currently stands there are about 200,000-640,000 hunters in Australia (the estimates vary greatly.) Or about 0.70%-2% depending on what estimate you use. I will say you are right about Japan and Korea not really having hunting cultures. Funnily enough that’s really come back to bite Japan in the arse (if you know you know.) as they went from just over 530,000 hunters in 1970 to as low as under 200,000. They have however seen a small increase to around the 200,000 range. However even if you were to consider it at its peak Japan had like 0.49% of there population as hunters. Which makes Australia look high.
I agree with the rest of the sentiment as well. The idea of gun control being for public safety is largely a 20th century idea. Apart from pockets of towns durning the 19th century in western America who would ban the carrying of guns in town. Generally speaking gun control or really any weapons control has been about keeping the proles in line.

Sure, but nothing like ours.

u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 01 '26
Hilarious how they cite UK and Australia in those examples. In the UK you can get .22LR and .22WMR ARs and there is even a way to get handguns. Australia there is a whole category for handgun ownership. In ways both countries laws are looser then Canada's now. The list of countries they can point to is actually getting thinner and thinner as Canada's is becoming more ban happy.

Seriously, if the intruder is RETREATING and you discharge your firearm OUTSIDE your home at them, you are endangering the public at that point, even in the US you would be arrested for this.
Exactly. I'm hardcore as fuck in terms of being pro self-defence, but when people are complaining about homeowners getting charged for shooting at fleeing regards in their driveway it makes me wonder whether we're all talking about the same thing.
Even the most stereotypically pro-gun states would slap your peepee for pulling something like that, but it seems like a lot of people think America is completely lawless

Guess the boomers really rolled out their walkers in record numbers for the LPC by-elections
Funny how our media and the voters aren't even asking the question yet as to why Carney has had like 10 MPs quit now, he's actually had more leave than the CPC I believe? But nope, still all "elbozos up" i guess.

So about the same as CPC, but we don't see the media constantly talking about it strangely. Would be a pretty big scandal if it was anyone else, other than Dear Leader.
There's fracturing in both parties, but we only ever see the CPC brought up in the government media, big surprise I guess.

Anyone else kinda enjoying how many people are getting screwed over by the buyback….like as if we didn’t warn everyone this is exactly that they’ll be dong!!
19
u/Lumindan Sep 09 '26
Its funny seeing people fall for the crabs in a bucket scheme and then vehemently defend their poor choice.
The same people who cry about the death of the culture are actively contributing to it's death.
Like you maybe could get some funds, but it's at everyone else's expense and long term it's a net loss (some of those items are priceless at this point).

u/rastamasta45 Sep 09 '26
I’ve said this before, if I wanted the damn money I would have never bought the damn guns in the first place. It’s not about the money, this is my
Property and I’m keeping it15
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 08 '26
It’s a reap what you sow situation. People were actively warned not to participate by the community. That the government doesn’t have there best interests at heart and liteally getting the firearm deactivated makes more sense. But some people just don’t listen.
-25
u/Agonizing-Stroke1812 Sep 09 '26
getting the firearm deactivated makes more sense
how? I got back ~90% of the value of my guns by turning them in which amounted to tens of thousands. Or I could have gotten $500 for each to get them deactivated only to have them wasting space as a depressing reminder of when I could enjoy them
→ More replies (11)
16
u/airchinapilot Sep 01 '26
Not about Canada but interesting that even though the metrics is firearms violence, they attribute the decline of it to community prevention with no mention of buybacks. Remove the reasons gangsters want to go banging and surprise, they don't pick up their gats

Montreal police Chief Fady Dagher was also at the ceremony. In his new role as president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Dagher said tackling long guns, including the SKS rifle, will be a key priority.
“We can’t afford that in Canada, not in the community we live in,” Dagher said. “So you can count on me. This is going to be a major priority for me.”

Quebec continues to be the fucking worst thing to ever exist. It’s like ground zero for the biggest morons and egomaniacs the world has ever seen. They literally think they’re so special that they just deserve to get whatever they want.
On the flip side though that pansy ass police chief probably just said that shit to score some easy points and grandstand.
6
u/InitialAd4125 Sep 13 '26
I swear I wish the rest of Canada had a say in voting to keep them or not because my ass would be voting to kick them out as soon as possible.
5
u/Mrdingus6969 Sep 12 '26
It pisses me off too because Quebec is beautiful but you could not pay me to live there because it is a queen nanny state and not just with guns. Their motorcycles laws too bug me. It is a monument how overly regulated everything probably is there
16
u/FunkyFrunkle Sep 12 '26 edited Sep 13 '26
That isn’t up to him though, and the government is extremely reluctant to ban the SKS otherwise they would have done it already. They tried, and had to walk it back with G46 in 2023 because people blew a fuse.
The wishes of one police chief trying to score brownie points with grieving families isn’t going to outweigh the reality that these gun bans have already been a logistical and political nightmare for the past seven years. It would be even more of a nightmare to budget and “buy back” every SKS in Canada. There’s your real reason why the government hasn’t banned it. There’s too many.
He’s also in a different situation than anywhere else in Canada. Montreal hired on a bunch more cops, and the city is very much on board and receptive with respect to these gun bans. Montreal was never going to be difficult, it’s trying to do this literally everywhere else that’s causing problems and Montreal isn’t Canada as a whole, something that seems to be lost on some people there.
The government is already well aware that the collective consciousness of Montreal wants to ban everything that even resembles a gun and freeze the bank accounts of anyone who disagrees, but it’s ultimately the federal government who has to sell this to the rest of the country and deal with the cost, planning, implementation and fallout.
Even poly had to change their tune by instead asking for bans on “new models” with detachable magazines and folding stocks. They were probably told that a complete SKS ban isn’t realistic because it isn’t.
If Montreal, ironically a mafia-run city, wants to ban guns so bad they can do so within their own boundaries and stop insisting that everyone else adhere to their metropolitan standards.

u/rastamasta45 Sep 12 '26
- Literal brain dead loser mentality, of course he’s Quebec.
At this point it doesn’t matter, they’re current 7 years in and 2 billion dollars down and achieved a 2% compliance rate while further galvanizing gun owners. They’re lost and delusional. Let them think this. Fucking idiots.
Largest black market of guns already created and they’ll create more. At this point I really don’t give a shit, I own what I own and I’ll never give it up
7
u/InitialAd4125 Sep 13 '26
"Literal brain dead loser mentality, of course he’s Quebec."
Yet another reason to support kicking Quebec out of Canada.
10
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
I sure do love how the chief of police decided to grave dance at a remembrance event but that’s par for the course in Canada. Wild how he name drops the SKS as well. Like is bro so out of touch with reality that he doesn’t understand just how common the SKS is in Canada? Like does he seriously not realize that even on a lower estimate there are easily 100,000s of SKS rifles in Canada? That there is probably closer to over a million? You don’t need to answer that. Those are rhetorical questions. Truly though it’s quite something how they are still trying to go after a rifle that they have kept on avoiding because it’s used by indigenous people way to much. Like my honest take with the SKS is they somehow make it that for a SKS to be legal you have to permeantly have the box magazine welded into place and no more detachable magazines. But like even that would be impossible to enforce. Then again the gun bans are also largely impossible to enforce. These people though don’t live in reality. They live in a la la land of we have unlimited resources to enforce whatever laws they want. When we struggle to even imprison actively violet criminals in Canada. It’s by definition paper tiger laws.
9
u/GoGetInvolved Sep 12 '26
Doubt he gives a shit its all about politics or ideology or both. He also said tackling long guns not just the SKS so get ready. Poly shared it too just in case you think they wont try to come for everything.
7
u/FunkyFrunkle Sep 12 '26
I’m not really worried that this is coming from the birthplace of where all of this shit started. Quebec is the only province somewhat on board with this.
6
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
They can try to come for everything but it’s getting to a point they physically are incapable of doing it. They already were before. They could ban every gun tommrow and it would be a utter shit show.
5
u/GoGetInvolved Sep 12 '26
You're right but it won't be a total ban all at once. It will be a slow creep for the next thing to try and kill the culture one step at a time.
4
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
They sure are doing it nice and slow if it’s been going on 7 year and they haven’t even finished with these bans lol. Like if anything I would be a little stressed if I was trying to do this as the only thing that’s happened is a increase in pal holders.
6
u/GoGetInvolved Sep 12 '26
I hope they fail but they're going to keep trying.
5
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
They can keep trying all they like but so far all it’s done is the opposite of what they wanted. In fact most things they try to do don’t work out. Just look at them trying to increase the number of RCMP in Canada. It’s pathetic.
3
u/CenturionV Sep 13 '26
Oh yeah, you can be 100% sure they come by this sub and cgn every so often and gawk in rage at all the tactical tm22's, Bubba sks's makasi/carmel's and tricked out Turknelli's. Shit with mlok, a pistol grip and a holosun drives their blood pressure through the roof and makes them seethe as they furiously scribble model names on a notepad and screen cap so they can keep working on the next "list" they will try to guilt and pressure the liberals into banning.
"Canadian's are still getting evil black guns somehow! Outrageous!"

Do tell me the last time the army served the people of Canada? Like the only thing I can think of is disaster relief and World War 2 (Although denying Spanish civil war veterans while forcing people to fight is rather questionable if you ask me.) But whenever they're used as an actual army not so much. Tell me how was Oka serving the people of Canada and not a golf course? How was getting involved with Afghanistan serving the people of Canada? How about WW1? The Boar War? How about all that "peace keeping"? Like how has that served the people of Canada?

Don't know if it's just me or if others feel similarly, but this hobby has started to become more of a burden than something to look forward to. It is due the gradual culmination of a few things:
1- range trips have become more expensive, gas wise and time wise.
2- cost of ammo going up. Besides 22LR, I feel like I'm just burning money, when I'm finding myself prioritising it for other things in my life.
3- the responsibility aspect. The paranoia of keeping firearms at home. It's starting to stress me out. I also keep reading stories of break-ins and other unfortunate events surrounding intruders, where the legal gun owner is facing criminal charges, months of stress and legal battles to clear their names, just because they happened to own firearms.
4- let's not even get into the political climate and the constant uncertainty.
All of these factors combined, I've lost my interest to go out and have fun, and am taking a break for now. I am this close to get out of the hobby completely though.
I don't intend to sound like a doomer, but these thoughts have been in my mind for a while now.

For me its largely the political climate and financial losses thats killed my interest. I lost 20K due to the bans with no means of recouping any of. And since I live in a province that wasn't allowed to participate in the buyback (not that I would have) it left me truly no other options but to wait for the SCC outcome to decide my next steps. I dont have 15 years of time or savings to rebuild the collection and frankly I dont intend to. Been to the range once this year and thats really all I can be arsed. Cheaper pasttimes and social circles to get involved in. And since we wont have a real shot at a new party in charge till 2033 (Carney/libs are gonna win 29 cus trumps stank will still be fresh) Ive kinda checked out largely. I only hang out here to find out if I was fucked with a new OIC everyday.
8
u/WSBBroker Aug 31 '26
Yeah.. getting absolutely cucked by the gov I basically stopped shooting. I’m not going to buy more guns only for them to be banned again. Would be different if I lived in a rural area or on a farm or lived around large crown land sections but driving an hour to the range and back .. I don’t know. One day I’ll maybe get a nice bolty and new lever / shotgun but I have been sour for awhile.
12
u/Beneficial-Ride-4475 Sep 01 '26
A burden? No I don't think so. A headache, yes.
I'll still be buying and selling, shooting, and hunting. I'm not going to let the LPC destroy my enjoyment.

Not sure about you brother, but the SPAS 12 is in Canada and it’s a glorious day for gun collectors!!
9
u/boozefiend3000 Aug 31 '26
Somehow the ATRS rifles were banned as variants of the AR even though the receiver is different. SPAS12 prohibited, change out the receiver and it’s legal. Country makes no fuckin sense lol
6
2
u/airchinapilot Sep 01 '26
change out the receiver and it’s legal.
? The receiver has always been determined to be the firearm in our laws and it makes sense. It is the base for all of the actual functionality of the firearm. Everything else are what is attached to it.
3
u/boozefiend3000 Sep 01 '26
Ya. The ATRS rifles had a different receiver than the AR and were deemed to be non restricted. Then the OICs kicked in and it was banned as a variant of the AR. Still had a different receiver. The same logic should apply to this new SPAS12 based on how this country decides to apply rules. Why I said this country makes no sense

Sounds like you're letting them win. You're 1st and 2nd point are valid but your 3rd is just paranoia and the 4th is something we'll all deal with together! Letting them get you down is Letting them win!
7
u/mithrajr Aug 31 '26
It's mostly the 3rd point that I'm paranoid with, yeah. It shouldn't be like this. That's why I'm just going to take a break for a while. Need to stop reading all the negative stuff online.

u/Mr-Figglesworth Sep 06 '26
Do you live in a somewhat sketchy area or something? I only ask because while I’m aware the possibility is there I have never worried about this for more than a few seconds.
We all have different situations too I live in a small town with a family so my wife or someone is always at the house and there are half a dozen cameras on the property.
I’ve got a baby and a toddler so I’m having a hard time finding time to reload and shoot now but it seems to be common with alot of the guys I used to shoot all the time with and they didn’t just have kids.
1
u/mithrajr Sep 06 '26
I'm in the greater Montreal area. It's relatively safe, but crime has been going up.
5
u/Icy-Veterinarian8662 Aug 31 '26
I feel the same but mostly for the two first points. It's expensive and become annoying.
I live in Quebec, too, and my local range started being asked for even non-restricted firearms to be recorded in the check-in slips when it used to be only for restricted firearms so I just don't go anymore, I don't want them on any kind of list.
5
u/SolemnSpider Sep 01 '26
Im trying to get around the cost of ammo by taking different .22 actions to the range so i can practice marksmanship on different platforms and keep myself from getting bored
10
u/Longjumping_Rain_483 Aug 31 '26
the third point is a bit stretched imo. one of the recent cases where a homeowner was charged, was because he saw them stealing his car in the driveway, and shot at them while they were going away, while shooting his neighbours house.
I'm not saying they don't get charged, but I'd rather be facing charges then dead.
Although we don't have a castle type of law (which I wish I did), I feel like as long as your somewhat responsible with the use of self defense, you have a case for yourself
3
u/mithrajr Aug 31 '26
It definitely is a gray-zone. Homeowners even get charged for defending their homes without firearms. Maybe only the worst kinds of cases make the headlines and maybe I've been reading too much into them that they've gotten to me.
8
u/Hotdog_Broth Aug 31 '26
1 and 2 have been really hurting lately. The cost of everything endlessly rising without ever being able to get a pay raise means my discretionary income is going to be dangerously close to zero as of mid march 2027. I always liked to have a range trip every week or two, but I’ve only been to the range twice this entire year, both times over six months ago. Having a hobby just isn’t in the budget now.
5
u/mithrajr Aug 31 '26
Exactly. I've gradually cut down going to the range. This year, I have gone only twice. If ever I do go again in the near future, it will be for 22LR practice only.
6
u/guestpassonly Aug 31 '26
You're right on the cost.
I had to cut back a lot on range trips especially with the closest on being an hour and a half from my house.
As for as responsability aspect, you can only do so much to prevent it.
The political aspect is always going to be a problem with our laws since its not a rigth, its a privilege.
I was wanting to get into sport shooting but after doing the math, i just couldnt afford it
3
u/airchinapilot Sep 01 '26
3- the responsibility aspect. The paranoia of keeping firearms at home. It's starting to stress me out. I also keep reading stories of break-ins and other unfortunate events surrounding intruders, where the legal gun owner is facing criminal charges, months of stress and legal battles to clear their names, just because they happened to own firearms.
That's just because the media only focuses on outliers than the normal. There's no news in saying 99.9 per cent of licensees go on with their lives without having police taking apart their safes.
2
u/mithrajr Sep 01 '26
If that's the case then that's a relief. I was under the impression that everytime a break-in or a home defense situation rises up, the gun owner faces severe consequences. Media sure doesn't help
5
u/Agonizing-Stroke1812 Aug 31 '26
Hugely agree. I try to get an outing scheduled every 3 weeks with friends, but I am seriously questioning my range renewals for 2027. Back when I had a bunch of cool now-prohib guns to shoot it was much easier to justify driving 120km to a range to enjoy them.
My nearby ranges are pistol only indoor ranges. These are fine if you have them to yourself, but become a royal PITA when there's a bunch of people shooting and you have to wait to change your target which will get shredded within 2-3 mags. Also not great to breathe the air in these.
Don't even get me started on the absurd probation shoot requirements. Sharon is one of the worst for this IMO.
2
u/mithrajr Aug 31 '26
wow that sounds like a painful range to deal with. I've stopped my memberships, now I only frequent to a pay-as-you-go range since I go a couples of times a year now.
3
u/InitialAd4125 Sep 01 '26
I know a lot of indoor shooting ranges kind of suck dick compared to outdoor ones on air quality alone. Like the air-conditioning and heating is nice but breathing in all that lead isn't good for your health.
4
u/thatregal Aug 31 '26
I’ve been in the same boat lately.
I’ll always own, maintain and care for firearms, but the state of the community in Canada has gotten pathetic.Gun owners don’t even stick together, half reject the buy back program, half are willing to comply…
Left/Right wing politics are a constant topic…
Lack of range time and space… (mostly due to ranges having absurd prices and rules)
Uncertainty of whether you’re a criminal or not from absurd gun laws…
Scalping on the second hand market because of hype and rarity amongst some of the shittiest firearms on planet earth known to mankind…
I joined the community early 2018 when things were still pretty decent, it’s crazy how terrible things have become since then. I do not expect much from a country in self destruct mode though.
18
u/WeightedDips95 Aug 31 '26
Why wouldn’t “left/right” politics be a theme here? Without getting bogged down in philosophical weeds, every party that is traditionally associated with the left is anti gun and conversely every right leaning party is pro-gun.
17
u/boozefiend3000 Aug 31 '26
Ya, I don’t get. You vote left wing you’re voting to get rid of your guns. Make up any shit you want in your head to justify your vote, but that’s true lol
0
u/InitialAd4125 Sep 01 '26
Well every "left wing" party (they're barely leftwing I'm going to keep it real with you) that actually gets seats i.e that matter is anti gun because some fucker promised to change that and give other parties a chance but that never happened because electoral reform is a bridge to far but legal weed isn't.
2
u/Beneficial-Ride-4475 Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 01 '26
(they're barely leftwing I'm going to keep it real with you)
I mean, you and I both know that, but even more left/far-left parties still went slasher villain on guns and gun owners in most cases. With Yugoslavia being the exception that proves the rule.
i.e that matter is anti gun because some fucker promised to change that and give other parties a chance but that never happened because electoral reform is a bridge to far but legal weed isn't.
Yeah sure. But our center-left parties will always side with the urbanites, that's their bread and butter. When we see more pushes for gun control, but less controls on x or y substances, that's just a reflection of the urban base.
3
u/InitialAd4125 Sep 01 '26
Yeah and in a non first past the post system people who care enough can vote for single issue parties like the weed legalization party and have them get actual seats. But nope we have a rather undemocratic democracy instead.

u/Beneficial-Ride-4475 Sep 01 '26
Left/Right wing politics are a constant topic...
Of course it is, left and right gun owners will never see eye to eye. They'll never be allies/friends.
Uncertainty of whether you’re a criminal or not from absurd gun laws…
The whole Bill Blair 12/10 gauge debacle comes to mind here.
I joined the community early 2018 when things were still pretty decent, it’s crazy how terrible things have become since then.
I got into this around the same time you did, and I can assure things were still just as bad then. We just didn't notice because it was the status quo.

Seeing as the first ETA deadline has already come and gone, do you think the Makasi will hit retailers before the end of the year?
3
u/rastamasta45 Sep 13 '26
Spoke to North Sylvia at TACCOM, eta is 3 to 5 weeks from today, Makasi and Carmel, however shipment one is completely sold out with thousands on back order. He said wait around December till they’re in stock at normal rates
2
u/Expensive_Blood_2800 Sep 13 '26
I’m referring to how the US handles gun regulations, where states have primary jurisdiction to tailor laws—like concealed carry permit reciprocity and hunting rules—to fit local demographics rather than a single blanket rule for the whole country.

u/Agonizing-Stroke1812 Sep 12 '26
Looking at recent approval ratings I'm thinking it's over for good for our hobby here. We have a shot at grandfathering what we've got and that's about it. Hope I'm wrong
13
u/rastamasta45 Sep 12 '26
Buddy at this point I’m thinking you want this to happen because it’ll make you feel better that you gave up your collection that way “well it’s all banned so I can’t have regret”
Meanwhile we’re all standing strong and holding out, when we eventually win (the numbers show we will) you’ll be filled with regret that you lost things you can never buy. Enough with the doomerism, we won this battle (we did, you didn’t because you handed in everything)
5
1
u/Agonizing-Stroke1812 Sep 15 '26
If they stay banned I got paid, if they get unbanned I can just reacquire. Win-win
11
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
It doesn't matter what the approval ratings are right now. The odds of us going into a election right at this moment are pretty low. Also not to character assassinate but my guy you are a 6 month old account who has pretty much only doomer posted. Like a lot of your comments I have seen you say in this thread are doomer post after doomer post with a few more average run of the mill comments mixed in. Like please instead of doomer posting do something productive. Take someone who has never shot before to the range. Help pay for someone's CFSC course. Just do something productive instead of basking in nihilism. Like I get it things suck but be the change you want to see. Help increase the number of PAL holders. I can't say this enough. Let's get the numbers up to 3 million+.
12
u/22GageEnthusiast Sep 12 '26
This is the best long term solution for firearm rights in Canada. We need to create more PAL holders. Imagine if the % of PAL holders to the general population increased from like 2.5% currently to like 5%, 10% or 15%.....it wouldn't matter as to which political party was in power. The governing party would be forced to pass favourable laws or at the very least, leave the existing laws as they are.
9
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
Funnily enough it’s not at 2.5%. Currently there are 2.4 million pal holders and let’s say Canadas population is 42 million. That would mean 5.7% of the population had a pal. What we should be striving for is atleast double that.
3
u/22GageEnthusiast Sep 12 '26
My bad I guess I got the numbers mixed up. Incredible that were at over 5% already.....but again we need that number to go as high as possible. This is the best long term solution.
3
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
Yep. Every chance I get am scooping out people both irl and online I know that would be interested in getting a pal but are on the fence about it. I tell them get a crossbow (that often times is a good starting off point.) or I go straight to it and tell them I would help pay for there CFSC. Anything to get more pal holders.
9
u/22GageEnthusiast Sep 12 '26
The political situation is hopeless until Trump is out of office which will be January 2029.
However, I would wait until the Supreme Court decision has been reached until you start being a doomer about firearm laws in Canada.
7
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
I am very curious as to how the SCC is going to rule. Will it be unanimous? More divided? Like a lot of nihilistic people would say that the SCC is just going to rubber stamp. Yet if that was the case they would have just denied the application setting precedent in that action alone. The fact the SCC has allowed for this application alone is pretty big. Do you know about many hearings the SCC are doing in 2026 both already have done and have set to do? 69 (nice.). Which in the grand scheme of things for a entire country that is very very small. They get 100s of cases in a year and choose to hear very very few of them. If you don’t believe me ask Runkle about it.
5
u/RydNightwish Sep 12 '26
Im less concerned about what the SCC will do and more about what the gov does in response. We lose, things stay the same. We win, they rush a bill with thier ill gotten majority and things stay the same or get even worse.
If the PQ wins, they will burn the whole country to keep qc happy and guns are very easy kindling in that regard.
Its good to see people still enthused but its also only reasonable to let people who are mentally exhausted be able to vent. Its been a long seven years and you cant fault people who have basically checked out and are steeling themselves against disappointment. Theres no reason to believe that a loss at the SCC would cause the libs to drop this whole thing.
6
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
Depends. Legislation wise they might just save it until later.
That would not be great but keep in mind chances are the PQ is only going to get a minority government.
It’s enough to argue that they would put it on the back burner for a while depending on circumstances. If the PQ somehow wins a majority? Yea then it’s a priority. If they win a minority? Little bit less so. If they don’t win anything? Even less so. If there polls start dropping? Yea probably.
The best thing we can do in the meantime is increase the number of pal holders in Canada. It’s a numbers game and the more numbers we have the better.

u/TKB-059 bc Sep 12 '26
Ratings don't matter. There is no election.
It's just rally around the flag larp. It'll all come crashing down when economic reality hits.

I saw a post on here about a bunch of international students doing some dumb shit with guns, Listen your either anti gun or pro gun, and a lot of people in this sub sound like their pro gun for their race but anti gun for other races, the right to bear arms is a "god given right to all man kind" you don't fight stupid gun laws by cussing out people in your own hobby. don't use the excuse that the optics are bad, you owning a shotgun in Toronto is bad optics no matter what licence you have, we got to stick together and teach each other and fight to remove these fubar gun laws like why the fuck can't u use a firearm in your vehicle?maybe question that because a lot of you sound like poly in that post
13
u/FunkyFrunkle Sep 12 '26 edited Sep 12 '26
You’re not going to win a fight against overly restrictive gun laws by posting antagonistic and vaguely threatening/confrontational bullshit involving firearms on social media like those guys did either. If that’s your idea of helping, you’re doing incalculable damage to the cause and this “you’re either for or against us” approach makes you look like a confrontational mouthpiece that doesn’t understand the concept of nuance.
A bunch of dudes hanging out of the back of a vehicle holding rifles up in the air while larping as bunch of rag-tag rebels is going to look terrible regardless of race and yeah, I will shit on people for that because it does look terrible and you’re going to leave people with an even worse taste in their mouth than you just simply owning a shotgun in urban Toronto. What we ought to be doing as a community is broadening support by making it approachable in ways that people can relate to, not deepening it with the same diehard people by passing shit off like this as acceptable. We’re not expanding by doing that, we’re just alienating potential support.
People seem to have trouble understanding that just because someone likes the same thing you do doesn’t necessarily mean they’re allies to the cause. You don’t want to associate with people who are shitty ambassadors to the community like those guys. There are some people who like guns that I wouldn’t want to really associate with because they’re obnoxious, ignorant and inflammatory enthusiasts who are not only going to get themselves in trouble, but you too.
These guys are shitty ambassadors not because of their race. It has absolutely nothing to do with their race, it has everything to do with how they’re portraying themselves with guns in Canada. Our success and survival depends on the amount of support we win or lose. Pulling stunts like these guys did will not only drain our support, but instead shift it to the prohibitionists who will seize upon that support to ban more shit.
So no, sorry, it looks terrible when anyone does it. This time around, it happened to be people of a particular ethnicity but it doesn’t change the salient point of how it looks. It would look just as bad with a bunch of white dudes with bandannas and sunglasses holding rifles in the air out of a vehicle as it does with a bunch of middle-eastern or Indian people wearing shemaghs and sunglasses. Associating with people like that makes us look like lunatics and is just the kind of ammunition Poly needs to save the buyback from the edge of political extinction. It’s also a good way to get a visit from the cops.
They absolutely could pin you with careless use or brandishing for doing shit like this because it looks bad enough. A judge may use the latitude that’s afforded to them to do it, and they don’t have a sense of humour typically. Good luck arguing your interpretation of “god given rights” in court.
I also wouldn’t really go around saying things like “The right to bear arms” in a Canadian context regardless if you think they’re “god given” rights or not. You’re going to sound like an American or wannabe-American who knows nothing about Canadian laws and people, especially now, LOVE to attack you for it. I’ve seen countless people try to argue tooth and nail for the exact same belief and it has never once found a receptive audience outside of our own echo chamber. As a result, I’ve never once argued from this point of view because it’s been a complete waste of time in 100% of the instances I’ve watched it happen.
I would also recommend using proper spelling and punctuation when engaging in debate because people do notice when you type like a 12 year old and it’s frustrating to watch an otherwise good sound argument completely dismissed because the people think they’re arguing with a caveman. Not meant to be perceived as an attack on you, just a suggestion. Bad writing is just giving the other person an escape hatch to dismiss you completely and it makes you look uneducated.
You’re not going save gun ownership in Canada by excusing shit like this and defending irresponsible dickheads just because they’re “gun owners”. Strength in numbers doesn’t mean fuck all if you start lowering standards and welcoming dangerous people into the community.
You’ll always be judged by the company you keep.

u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
While I generally am okay with some spelling and grammar mistakes on a Reddit post a line does exist. If you want to sound well articulated take a minute to read a comment over and proof read. It takes all of a few minutes max to do so.
-3
u/hungbeastfromtheeast Sep 12 '26
I don't agree with you, and your mentality is the reason guns are going in Canada, look past the Grammer bub, y'all in this sub are pathetic I've been here 4 years and all that's happened is you guys jack each other off in the politics sub masterdebating with each other but never do anything in real life to improve Canadian gun culture your a lost cause and you cant even see it
2
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 13 '26
My guy if you think improving Canadian gun culture is people shooting at bridges then I don't know what to tell you. Actively filming yourself doing illegal shit is stupid. You can talk about how it's stupid all you like and even in another comment I agreed with you. However that doesn't change the fact that they are filming themselves committing a crime which is a very very dumb thing to be doing.
6
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
It depends on the context. Some gun laws exist for a actual decentish reason. A lot don't. I am fine if someone is using there firearm in a car. That’s a stupid law to ban someone from using a firearm in a car. It’s illegal so I would recommend people don’t for the sake of not wanting to get a criminal record but like I do think the law is in fact stupid. What I am more concerned about is when people discharge a firearm where it's illegal to discharge said firearm and if it's unsafe to do so. That's generally the things that concern me.
3
u/DoYouGetSarcasm Sep 12 '26
The 2 pieces of news that come to mind when you say that are people shooting holes in a bridge and a guy bringing his hand gun to a break-in at a university. Those people shouldn't have guns.
When people do dumb shit with guns they shouldn't be allowed to have them. There's no devine decree or right to have a gun, especially after a person proves they are responsible with them.
You're off your rocker
0
u/Natural_Comparison21 Sep 12 '26
The one time do you get Sarcasm is not sarcastic and ends up making a very reasonable point about how doing dumb shit with guns really ougt to mean that person stops having said gun. Because you have the people who break a very bizarre law that doesn’t exist for public safety whatsoever. Then you have people who actively shoot in restricted areas (those places are atleast better thought out especially when it’s a literal building like a bridge Wtf don’t shoot at a bridge.) and actively bringing a gun to a break in… Which breaking in to a place is already a crime in and of itself…

In what fantasy would nobody sign up? people participate in buyback schemes even in the US where you literally get a gift card
17
u/boozefiend3000 Sep 02 '26
Those US buybacks are also actually voluntary. You’re not being forced to do anything in those ones. The people taking part in this one are just scared cowards. He’s right, if everyone man’d up and told the government to get fucked what could they do?
-6
u/Agonizing-Stroke1812 Sep 02 '26
Right, those US buybacks are completely voluntary, and the owners can still shoot their guns, yet people still hand them in and you think there was some prospect of having 0 participation in the Canadian buyback which was infinitely more enticing given that it was paying actual cash, and the guns were effectively paperweights otherwise?
13
u/boozefiend3000 Sep 02 '26
Who knows why they get turned in down there. Inheritance they don’t want? Less hassle than selling to a gun store? But the point is those buybacks don’t affect future use of guns down there. Nothings being permanently lost. Taking part in the buyback up here signals to the government they can get away with this, that down the line they can use this program again when they need to change a political channel and people will comply. Actively helping the government with this program is helping to destroy gun culture in Canada. It’s stupid as fuck to take part in it

That fight ended the day Carney won election mate we had one shot at stopping it and we lost. You can resist all the power to you but id take the money over having glorified paperweight in my closet
15
u/GinnAdvent Sep 02 '26
Carney and Liberal government won't be around forever.
And yes, it's going to be safe queens if the Liberals stay in power.
You can do whatever you want because it's your choice. You can also say what you want because it's your freedom, but you will get down voted because that's part of the reason Liberals can claim they have a "success".
If you just want to share the info, post what happened and don't reply, despite of whatever downvote or comments you get.
Oh the grand scheme of thing, if things do go side way, those "paper weights" I suspect will have some use again.

ive noticed a big change in society, I live rural, and have space to shoot on my own place, have been for years. Never had issues... now, in the last two years, ive had police attend my place 6 times due to "someone calling about gunshots".... I live in an area that had a big cottages ( read, Air B and B's).
They have my cel number, but always drive out. IDK who is more inconvenienced , me or the Police,. but man, its getting old. One starts to feel like we are doing something "wrong" after a while.
Cops never hassle me BTW, always cool about things, but ...
