Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Montreal police Chief Fady Dagher was also at the ceremony. In his new role as president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Dagher said tackling long guns, including the SKS rifle, will be a key priority.

“We can’t afford that in Canada, not in the community we live in,” Dagher said. “So you can count on me. This is going to be a major priority for me.”

That isn’t up to him though, and the government is extremely reluctant to ban the SKS otherwise they would have done it already. They tried, and had to walk it back with G46 in 2023 because people blew a fuse.

The wishes of one police chief trying to score brownie points with grieving families isn’t going to outweigh the reality that these gun bans have already been a logistical and political nightmare for the past seven years. It would be even more of a nightmare to budget and “buy back” every SKS in Canada. There’s your real reason why the government hasn’t banned it. There’s too many.

He’s also in a different situation than anywhere else in Canada. Montreal hired on a bunch more cops, and the city is very much on board and receptive with respect to these gun bans. Montreal was never going to be difficult, it’s trying to do this literally everywhere else that’s causing problems and Montreal isn’t Canada as a whole, something that seems to be lost on some people there.

The government is already well aware that the collective consciousness of Montreal wants to ban everything that even resembles a gun and freeze the bank accounts of anyone who disagrees, but it’s ultimately the federal government who has to sell this to the rest of the country and deal with the cost, planning, implementation and fallout.

Even poly had to change their tune by instead asking for bans on “new models” with detachable magazines and folding stocks. They were probably told that a complete SKS ban isn’t realistic because it isn’t.

If Montreal, ironically a mafia-run city, wants to ban guns so bad they can do so within their own boundaries and stop insisting that everyone else adhere to their metropolitan standards.
