Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Looking at recent approval ratings I'm thinking it's over for good for our hobby here. We have a shot at grandfathering what we've got and that's about it. Hope I'm wrong

The political situation is hopeless until Trump is out of office which will be January 2029.

However, I would wait until the Supreme Court decision has been reached until you start being a doomer about firearm laws in Canada.

I am very curious as to how the SCC is going to rule. Will it be unanimous? More divided? Like a lot of nihilistic people would say that the SCC is just going to rubber stamp. Yet if that was the case they would have just denied the application setting precedent in that action alone. The fact the SCC has allowed for this application alone is pretty big. Do you know about many hearings the SCC are doing in 2026 both already have done and have set to do? 69 (nice.). Which in the grand scheme of things for a entire country that is very very small. They get 100s of cases in a year and choose to hear very very few of them. If you don’t believe me ask Runkle about it.

Im less concerned about what the SCC will do and more about what the gov does in response. We lose, things stay the same. We win, they rush a bill with thier ill gotten majority and things stay the same or get even worse.

If the PQ wins, they will burn the whole country to keep qc happy and guns are very easy kindling in that regard.

Its good to see people still enthused but its also only reasonable to let people who are mentally exhausted be able to vent. Its been a long seven years and you cant fault people who have basically checked out and are steeling themselves against disappointment. Theres no reason to believe that a loss at the SCC would cause the libs to drop this whole thing.

Depends. Legislation wise they might just save it until later.

That would not be great but keep in mind chances are the PQ is only going to get a minority government.

It’s enough to argue that they would put it on the back burner for a while depending on circumstances. If the PQ somehow wins a majority? Yea then it’s a priority. If they win a minority? Little bit less so. If they don’t win anything? Even less so. If there polls start dropping? Yea probably.

The best thing we can do in the meantime is increase the number of pal holders in Canada. It’s a numbers game and the more numbers we have the better.
