Misc Planning a target shooting trip to General Use Crown Land G359 (Parry Sound/Muskoka). Need local by-law & access advice!
Hey everyone,
I’m looking to take a trip north of the GTA for some target practice and plinking on Crown land. I’ve been using the Crown Land Use Policy Atlas (CLUPA) and identified Area G359 (Multiple Resource Management) in the Parry Sound / Muskoka region as a potential spot.
According to the provincial CLUPA policy report, G359 is a General Use Area (Yellow) where general recreation and firearm discharge are permitted for Ontario residents.
Before heading out, I wanted to check in with locals or anyone who regularly shoots on Crown land up that way to double-check a few things:
Local Municipal Discharge By-laws: Since G359 covers a massive region spanning several townships (like Seguin, Carling, The Archipelago, McDougall, etc.), are there specific townships in that zone that strictly ban firearm discharge outside of hunting season? Are there local restrictions I should watch out for? The area I’m looking to go is Exit 189, Hwy 400 (Tower Rd.)
Access Points & Terrain: Given that G359 has a lot of private property inholdings, cottage roads, and recreational trails (like the Seguin Trail), what are the best ways to ensure I’m legally on public Crown land and well clear of trails or private property? Any recommendations for a particular area where it’s better to discharge the firearms than other areas?
Bringing Guests / Unlicensed Shooters: I plan to bring my brother along (unlicensed). My plan is to maintain a strict single firing line where only one person shoots at a time directly under my supervision (1-on-1, arm's reach) while everyone else stays well back with eye and ear protection. Has anyone run into any issues with local Conservation Officers or OPP regarding group setups like this on Crown land?
We’ll obviously be bringing proper targets, shooting into a solid natural dirt/rock backstop, and packing out all garbage, clay fragments, and brass.
Any tips on local township rules, navigating access roads, or general advice for the area would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
