Chiappa's questionable build quality and finish

Any fellow Chiappa owners (and specifically LA322 owners) dealing with quality control issues on their rifles?

Purchased this LA322 Bandit Bootleg earlier this year and its only seen the range twice, yet the finish is peeling right off with no effort. I fear at some point I'll be left with a bare receiver.

I'm considering opening a claim with Chiappa's warranty department. Fingers crossed they'll cover it?

I've only owned 1 Chiappa gun, the M1-9, and it was a piece of shit in terms ot reliability and build.

Good to know about this little LA322. I have almost bought the little 'bootleg bandit" model on a few occasions as it looked fun. That finish on it is awful! Id start a warranty claim and see what they say.

It still seems nuts to me that they make $2000 45-70 lever guns. I wonder how the quality is on those top of the line ones. I think some of their manufacturing is done in Turkey, and some in Italy if I recall correctly.

The M1-9 was on my bucket list for a while since its a rather attractive gun, then I realized how suboptimal the reliability was.

You'd be right about it being fun, it really makes a great little plinker, I bought it as sort of a secondary while small game hunting with my 12g. Despite it being reliable, I care about its resale value down the line.

Weirdly enough, to my knowledge the LA322 line is made in Italy.

Well I guess I should thank Trudeau for banning the M1-9 2 month before the date I had budgeted to buy it.

(Chiappa seams to be a hit or miss kinda company, I love shooting my buddy's Rhino and grouse hunting with a Double badger is fun)

It looks like a good old Ruger 10/22 receiver with paint peeling off! Ruger made things right when it happened. I guess Chiappa might do the same thing .

It's not great that Ruger paints the friggin inside of 10/22 receivers. Everytime I pull it apart to really clean, there's flakes suspended in the filth.

I was kind of on the fence, given that Chiappa claims 'finish wear' isn't a valid warranty concern but I suppose my case is rather extreme. I hope Chiappa will be as nice as Ruger. Thank you.

Well, the paint isn't yet peeling off of the outside of the Ruger yet but it will in due time.

I had(have?) a deluxe edition of this rifle. It kept failing to extract so I had to use a cleaning rod to remove the brass. Then after about the 20th shot, the frame cracked.

I brought it to a chiappa accredited gunsmith (sfrc Kingston). I've since been informed that the firearm was "written off" and I'm receiving a replacement.

I've been waiting 6 months, however, Chiappa has been pretty reasonable considering I lost my receipt for the firearm. I'm sure that the gunsmith could confirm it was practically a new gun once they looked at it.

If you get to Chiappa internationals website and keep failing the cloudflare check (it happened to me, very distressing), go to their US site and file the claim there with an explanation and request they forward it to the proper people. That's what I did.

Hopefully I get a replacement soon. Hopefully you get some sort of compensation.

Wow that’s super rough. Mine has a small bit that peeled off underneath the takedown handle when I was cleaning it a bit and I instantly knew I would need to continue to baby the finish. Seeing that has me worried for the future lol (I’ve put about 1200 rounds through mine)

Oh damn, I've only ran about a fifth of what you ran through mine. I must have gotten a lemon then unfortunately. I wish they blued the receivers instead of throwing on a cheap coat of paint and calling it a day lol

The receiver is made of aluminum. This isn't a thing for aluminum. (You can think of aluminum as a self-bluing material; its oxide layer is harder than the metal and that forms on contact with air.)

Normally, aluminum is anodized, so that oxide layer is thickened (and can be colored in the process). But that tends to look weird if you're doing it cheaply (it takes on a purple color cast- look at Crusader's shitty not-AR-15 receivers for a good modern example of this), and won't match the barrel (which is still blued steel).

Cheap paint doesn't stick to aluminum very well, as you've observed, but it does match the color of the barrel so it looks nice on the showroom floor. Tools get wear on them, this thing is a tool, treat it as such.

I don't own that model but that's brutal. I'd reach out to them. I have a Chiappa in 44 mag and while I needed to tighten it out of the box (literally 5 loose screws from memory) it's been a gem since.
