News / Politics / Activism Five gun control advocacy groups are renewing pressure on the RCMP to disclose information about the firearms used in Tumbler Ridge

Secrecy and accountability ‘can coexist’: groups push for Tumbler Ridge gun details

OTTAWA — Five gun control advocacy groups are renewing pressure on the RCMP to disclose information about the firearms used in the mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., saying public discussion of the details could help prevent another tragedy.

The RCMP says the force cannot reveal specific information because the investigation of the February shootings at a home and school in the small community is active and ongoing.

In a Sept. 14 letter addressed to RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme, the groups say that as a new school year begins, students, parents, teachers and communities deserve verified information that could help address failures in gun control law or its enforcement before another mass shooting happens.

“In a mass murder investigation like the one at Tumbler Ridge, operational secrecy and public accountability can coexist,” the letter says.

“Police should operate on a principle of maximum transparency and minimum secrecy to maintain public trust, prevent misinformation and allow informed debates about potential policy changes to increase public safety from gun violence.”

The letter is signed by Heidi Rathjen of the group PolySeSouvient and by representatives of Angie’s Angels, Canadian Doctors for Protection Against Guns, Danforth Families for Safe Communities and the Quebec Mosque.

The Feb. 10 shootings in Tumbler Ridge left nine people dead, including young assailant Jesse Van Rootselaar, who took her own life.

The Canadian Press is part of a consortium of media outlets taking legal action to obtain information about the guns used in the mass shooting and the weapons seized from the home of Van Rootselaar.

The letter from the gun control advocacy groups says no responsible person or party is asking police to release operational details, witness accounts, investigative tactics or material that could prejudice a legal process.

“But Canadians have a right to know how our gun control system worked — or failed to work — when multiple children are shot and killed in a matter of minutes,” the letter reads.

The groups seek details about the guns involved in the killings, including make, model, type, classification and legal status, along with relevant information about magazines, prohibited devices, ammunition or accessories.

In the event disclosure must still be delayed, the groups say they want a clear explanation of the type of information being withheld and a sense of when the RCMP will be able to provide an update.

Copies of the letter were sent to several politicians, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree and British Columbia Premier David Eby.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark, an RCMP spokesperson, said in a statement that because the police probe remains active, “we cannot discuss any specific details or investigative actions.”

Clark said the B.C. RCMP remains committed to “providing answers where and when we can, and we appreciate the public’s patience as verified, official information becomes available.”

Clark pointed to the RCMP’s July 7 statement on the shootings, which said firearms assessments were being completed.

“This continues to be a criminal investigation, in which we have not eliminated the possibility that charges could be laid,” the July statement said.

“It is important to understand that the absence of publicly disclosed details does not mean investigators do not have that information. Rather, we must protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, particularly with potential future prosecution in mind.”

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 16, 2026.

Misc I live under a rock -- what's driving the hype of the Sulun Spas 12?

Is it just because it's cool/Call of Duty, or did they innovate or are making to a really high standard or something?

All of a sudden I'm just seeing post after post of this gun and I feel like I missed something here? If the answer is "just because it's cool" I totally get it, I just don't know if I missed something here.

Gun and gear reviews Turkish garbage abuse test.

Pictured are the new Hatsan BullTac SA, and a used and abused Escort Magnum I got for dirt cheap. Put nearly 1500 rounds between the two over the last few days. I didnt count how much I fed each gun, but close to 1000 through the escort and ~500 through the bullpup. The shells used are pictured, along with some handfuls of Winchester 3" slugs.

For the Escort Mag, the one and only issue I had was popping the ring out of the piston while rapid firing slugs. Pinched it and popped it back on, no issues 250 rounds since.

For the bullpup, one FTF and one stovepipe in 500 rounds, both occurred within the first 50 cycles.

Anyone on the fence about the BullTac, between all the positive reviews and my own positive experience, it's a good buy. It happily eats whatever I feed it, and nothing comes loose between cleaning. You can't ask for much more for the price it is. And it's cool as fuck.

The Magnum was what really impressed me especially with god knows how many rounds went through it prior to me. For a $250 gun it far exceeded my expectations.

Fix my gun TM-22 Feather: Warranty Issues

So, I experienced an out of battery discharge in my TM-22 feather. I stopped shooting, and took the gun apart inspecting the barrel. I noticed when I ran a cleaning rod through it that the rod got completely stuck mid way down the barrel. I was using CCI ARTactical, and I only owned the gun for less than 3 days.

I dropped it off at the warranty place and was told 3-4 weeks at drop off, I have followed up once every two weeks and was told the same “its in queue”. It is now creeping up on 6 weeks, I sent an email asking for clarification as to when it will be looked at and the email has gone unanswered for 5 days.

Im wondering what I can do in this case? I get warranty work takes time, but the window I was told it would be looked at has passed by a decent margin.

Im merely asking for insight, I am not bashing or trying to slander.

Buy recommendations 12g SxS accessory starter kit for a new gun owner?

So, after eyeing around intersurplus and chatting with my Russian friend about Izhevsk (IJ) shotguns, I finally purchased a good condition IJ-43. Along with it, I also got some 12g snap caps, a gun sock, and trigger locks.

At this point, I'm still short on maintenance accessories. The SxS is supposedly chrome lined and fixed full/mod chokes, I knew that I needed tools and gadgets for maintenance and cleaning the barrel and mechanisms of the gun, but I don't know exactly what's needed here.

My CFSP instructor basically said, "Get an amazon kit and swap out the liquids", but that was quite some time ago and I wasn't sure what he said about them liquids so I have to resort to you kind fellas for help :P

I do plan to keep the gun well maintained since I'm also purchasing the gun for my collection. Mostly due to having good memories with them in video games, but basically, I'd like to keep the gun in great condition with the gun it self and properly maintain the wood furnitures. Is there anything I need for this then? Wood furnish? What gun oil do I need if I still plan to use it for trap shooting?

Also, what should I do when I first receive the firearm? Should I get it checked with a gunsmith? Should I clean anything or rub on anything? I'm actually really nervous about it ngl.

Buy recommendations Differences between Makasi MK15 depending on importer

I spoke with a retailer today after North Sylva posted online that the Makasi rifles they would be importing would have 15” handguards.

Sounds like the rifles being distributed by Gravel will have 12” handguards, and that the longer handguard are exclusive to the ones being brought in by North Sylva.

Its great that they’re making the rifle better for the Canadian market (no giant barrel with short handguard) but also unfortunate that some people that placed pre-orders with retailers through Gravel will end up getting what they might consider a worse product.

Does anyone have a subscription and tell me what the difference between envelope and no envelope is?

Is no envelope just a plastic sleeve? I can’t imagine a paper this large surviving lettermail being sent loose without something to secure it. Is the envelope for privacy?

Shooting So happy my musclar chronic pain f**k off in 2026 and I can shoot 😅

I frankly had diabolical chronic muscular pain in my back muscles via chronic pain syndrome. It was triggered after I sneezed and pinched a nerve temporarily for a split second in my mid back. It basically just cause Central sensitization.

My back muscles would literally lock up until I couldn't stand anymore and I was in like 8 out of 10 pain within a 3 hours or less of trying to shoot.

Thank God for researchers like S Kasahara to study neurodiversity driven chronic pain and publishing study data on how to treat it.

Pragmatically I've had my chronic pain resolved with Vyvanse and pramipexole together with an under a year.

I'm poor still because I've been stuck on disability being disabled and I'm hoping to return to the workforce soon now I'm regaining my physical capacity, but I went a little bit crazy on credit because I have a pending bodily harm settlements to cover the bill.

I was just extremely excited at being able to do stuff without my back muscles locking up on me and completely tricked out this pig of a rifle to handle that I hated to shoot because it didn't fit me and now I absolutely freaking adore it:

Feets / Collection / My build My homebrew 10/22 carbon barrel turned out ok

So I been doing some experimenting with barrel building in the last month, since im an engineer and not an machinist I had a machine shop cut the components on my design, put together with 3m structural epoxy, did chambering and crowning on a vevor mini lathe and cut the extractor groove with a old horzontal mini mill, rifling came from button rifled liner if you are wondering

I mount it in sbi's st22 lite and gets .5" 10 shot grouping at 50 yrds with ccisv, so right around 1moa mark, which is surprising because I designed the thing to be ultra light and didn't actually put much thought on making it accurate.

Never seen a rifle BNIB come in like this before.

I wonder if it would be fine after cleaning but leaning towards just returning it since these are far from cheap firearms
