Fix my gun New SIG Cross .308

Post image

Never seen a rifle BNIB come in like this before.

I wonder if it would be fine after cleaning but leaning towards just returning it since these are far from cheap firearms

Return that.

The rifle was clearly stored / transported incorrectly at some point between the manufacturer and you.

This is why we coat our guns in oil. You need to clean it before using it, but at least it wont be rusted.

Apparently the entire batch a retailer got of cross .308’s had this problem

I ordered this from one of bigger reputable retailers from Ontario so I wonder if something majorly fucked up at SIG

The root cause here is moisture. At some point it was stored in a wet environment. Where that environment was wet, you'll never know.

SIG USA fighting the trade war by dipping their barrels in the Atlantic before shipping them to Canada apparently

Yeah, this looks like it came out of a warehouse that experienced a flood or extended high humidity conditions.

If the whole batch was like the rumors OP mentioned, it may have possibly been the railcar/trailer they came in on.

Either way, the whole batch should have been an insurance write-off and never been delivered. Yeesh.

Unfortunately SIG isn’t what it used to be when it comes to their qc.

Everytime a european manufacturer moves to the US their quality tanks

The ol' "moving it to save money on wages and tariffs" definitely has a downside, and that downside is people will do the absolute minimum when their work treats them like shit for minimum wage (or as close to it as possible), practically no holidays and no job security due to At-Will employment (and NH, where the Sig factory is located, is indeed at-will).

I certainly wouldn't have any company loyalty or pride in my work if my boss could fire me on a whim for pointing out a problem if they happen to be in a bad mood, and if a batch of rifles were improperly treated or exposed to the elements, it would incentivize covering it up, shutting up, and making it someone else's problem.

Same thing happened to Bosch appliances. There is a significant difference in the QA/failure rates between the models manufactured in Europe vs the US.

I'll never buy a Sig after the p320 scandal.

The tape on the box saying “inspected by SIG” is kinda funny after looking down the bore

Even if it was a cheap firearm that’s not acceptable

Oh 100% Maybe $200 Mosin it’d be fine but never brand new

Yeah contact your retailer

this would only be borderline tolerable on a milsurp and only if clearly disclosed beforehand

I thought you were out in the desert field testing it by dragging it through sand.

Return it. I'd expect perfection for something new.

How is this even a question? Of course it should be returned... shouldn't matter if its a SIG or Savage Arms... no firearm BNIB should any trace of rust.

Absolutely wild. Just got my 6.5 cross 3 days ago, absolutely nothing like this.

1

u/Oetter83 2h ago

Yeah apparently 6.5 barrels are fine but .308 is like this

Yikes the threads in the choke tube on my new 590r were slightly rusty but not that bad I cleaned and brushed it out good and you’d never know now but that’s bad

u/ngongo_2016 22h ago

I am not even sure it's rust. Looks like a sand/dirt to me. Still not acceptable

Yikes

My sympathies

Lol I remember someone about 2 years ago got a brand new in box Sig cross and was quite excited about it, then he opened the box and looked down the bore and saw visible fuzzy rust sporadically through the entire bore

Beyond unacceptable for a near $3000 rifle.

Don’t tell me you bought it from Basspro

Someone dropped that barrel down in dirt.

Either retailer sold you a used gun or this is a rage bait post.

Look at the bore. That's rust
