Shitpost / Memes Winchester Model 1887/1901 Appreciation Post

Post image

Howdy Folks

The Texan is back with yet another Gun Appreciation Post.

It’s been a while since I have done a Lever Action, so how about it! Here is a bit of a classic that was made popular by Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and has since become a massive icon. The one and only!

Winchester Model 1887/1901

What’s the difference between the 1887 and 1901?

The 1887 is 12 Gauge and the originals can only shoot black powder 12 Gauge shells, the reproductions however, those can thankfully use smokeless powder.

The 1901 However was made to take Smokeless Powder and is chambered in 10 Gauge shells.

Anyways!

Enjoy!

News / Politics / Activism Carney responds to calls for stricter gun control: 'We need a multifaceted approach'

Agreed, meanwhile, we also need car control, social media control, real estate housing control, and so on and so forth. Since lack of multi facet approach has caused substantial deaths through the years due to ineffective enforcement and loopholes in the system.

In fact, let's start with tighter knife control first because there were

2014 Calgary stabbing

2020 Quebec city stabbing

2021 North Vancouver stabbing

2022 Saskatchewan stabbing

2024 Ottawa stabbing

Last year 2025 Hollow Water First Nation stabbing.

And then the Burnaby RCMP Constable fatally stabbed in the line of duty in Oct 2022.

A multi faceted approach indeed.

Gun and gear reviews Zastava LK M85 Mini Mauser- first thoughts...

Post image

Recently I came across an absolute steal of a deal online for a rifle I'd never even heard of until I saw it. I quickly sent a message, clinched a deal, and finalized it. The rifle is mine. To fund other projects and restorations I ended up parting ways with my SKS but there was one problem- I still have a ton of ammunition! The only solution to that problem was finding another rifle that could eat 7.62x39. I've known of other rifles on the market for sometime from Ruger, CZ, and Howa- what I didn't know was that there was also a Zastava option. Zastava as far as I'm aware no longer imports due to situations elsewhere in eastern Europe, so I went for that option. So what is it?

Zastava calls it the Mini Mauser. At one point they offered this rifle in 7.62x39, .223 Remington, and a couple other options. Externally, it does appear to look like a scaled down version of their full size offerings... But there are some key differences. The safety is most certainly not a feature you'd find on most Mauser rifles, it seems to lack controlled feed, and the claw extractor is not present on the bolt itself. So is it a Mauser? Visually yes, but not really.

When I got home I quickly settled in and confirmed the function of the rifle. Thanks to my ingenuity I created some dummy rounds some time ago out of live rounds (a simple process that requires removing the primer, bullet, and powder, and then reassembling without any of the boom parts). What I found was surprising... Zastava advertises the Mini Mauser as being able to hold 5 rounds in the magazine, but realistically you can only fit 4. I also found that surplus spec ammo is actually tighter on close and cycling than commercial spec ammo, and that the chamber is more or less tailored for commercial spec, brass cased ammo. Allegedly it is still safe to fire surplus and steel case ammo through this rifle, but for now I'll be sticking to brass cases. The receiver also comes drilled and tapped for optics, which is a nice touch. Maybe I'll top it with a scope, maybe I'll feel an itch for another red dot. We'll see...

Now for the really bad impressions...

Good lord, the machining. If you could go into a time machine and see Yugo workshops cranking out rifle after rifle because Tito and Stalin had a nasty breakup, they'd probably all feel like this. For a country known for some of the best AK variants and Mausers out there, this rifle is not it. Sporting look aside, this is about as rugged, rough, and no nonsense as working a bolt gets. Working the bolt feels like you're dragging it through sand and when opened the bolt just kinda flops around; a far cry from the super smooth bolt actions of today. Allegedly this is common with Zastava rifles- after a generous lubing of the bolt you're supposed to work the bolt around 300 to 500 times to fully "break in" the action and remove any machining imperfections on the guides in the action. Is it fudd lore? Maybe, but I'll have to sit down and work the bolt a bunch to see if it helps. If not, it might be time to go to a gunsmith.

Overall, my first impressions are a little mixed. It's rough around the edges sure, but it's definitely a unique gun in a world where everyone is obsessed with the alternatives in the same caliber. Is it going to be a regular option in my lineup? Find out soon...

Misc Mossberg 3-Barrel Combo Ammo Setup

Main use would be turkey, grouse and deer.

I'd like to know if I'm overthinking this regarding ammo for this new boi.

I want non-toxic for what I eat, so the plan is:

Bismuth #5 for turkey (24" turkey choke)

Steel #7.5 for grouse (28" IC choke)

Copper Sabot Slugs for the rifled barrel.

Might also get a box of cheaper Challenger clay shots for target shooting.

Does that make sense?

I bought this old Beretta a300 used and it seems to make a noise when the bolt is locked back. Am I missing any parts or is it just loose?

So this gun is most likely a hardware store gun since it has no discernible seriel anywhere just proof marks from Belgium and the UK. I included a disassembled and assembled 44xl round for reference i use the outside of a 9.3x72R case to roll the paper shotcup and a 22 cleaning patch as extra backing.

Shooting New Beretta 1301 Mod 2 - clean and first shoot

It looks like I should clean off all the grease/oil the shotgun came with. And then put some gun oil on it.

Any advice? Small drop of lube everywhere there is metal on metal contact?

Buy recommendations Best “do it all” rifle

I’m looking for advice on the best rifle for doing a bit of everything. The main use I’m looking for is coyote and deer hunting as well as a lot of target shooting.

I totally understand everyone is going to have a different opinion on cartridge but I’d love to hear what everyone thinks for my situation.

I currently own sks and a 10/22.

Let me know your thoughts! TIA

Still get a chuckle that the Stowaway’s size is on par with past R’s.

The MK Machining Chassis definitely improves the overall ergonomics. Will be complete with the hook style cocking handle from Dirty Canadian.

Fix my gun Rifle Jumping.

So I am not new to shooting but have yet to experience this. And yes i k ow I sound dumb but I gotta ask.

When i am running my Ruger American Ranch, I find that the rifle "hops" after each shot. I am holding tight as I do with any other rifle. Admittedly this is my first "short " rifle. Could it be caused by the muzzle blast? Its 6.5 Creedmoor if that helps. It really not causing any issue with accuracy but is killing my follow through.

If i put it in my BOG tripod it is nearly non existent, which is why I feel it may be muzzle blast coming off the shooting table at the range.

Buy recommendations Looking Into Adding an Antique Revolver To Add to The Collection

Hi all, I’m in the market for an antique status revolver, as that’s all I can get since I don’t qualify for exemption. Basically I boiled it down to three potential contenders 1.) the German 1883 Reich Revolver, 2.) the 1889 Bodeo, and lastly 3.) the 1892 French Ordnance Revolver. My budget is roughly $3500-$4000, and I would like to know which one is best in terms of value, and ease of acquiring brass and bullet or factory ammo. How well do these revolver holdup to use, are any of them weaker than the others and more prone to breakage? From what I understand the 1883 was build like a tank but is not the most ergonomic piece.

Smokeless powder… Can I use smokeless powder in all of them? I intend to mostly use black powder anyways, it’s just nice to have that option. Is there any common issue with any of these revolver that I should be aware of before purchasing.

Thank you all for the advice
