News / Politics / Activism Carney responds to calls for stricter gun control: 'We need a multifaceted approach'
https://montreal.citynews.ca/video/2026/06/25/carney-responds-to-calls-for-stricter-gun-control-we-need-a-multifaceted-approach/Agreed, meanwhile, we also need car control, social media control, real estate housing control, and so on and so forth. Since lack of multi facet approach has caused substantial deaths through the years due to ineffective enforcement and loopholes in the system.
In fact, let's start with tighter knife control first because there were
2014 Calgary stabbing
2020 Quebec city stabbing
2021 North Vancouver stabbing
2022 Saskatchewan stabbing
2024 Ottawa stabbing
Last year 2025 Hollow Water First Nation stabbing.
And then the Burnaby RCMP Constable fatally stabbed in the line of duty in Oct 2022.
A multi faceted approach indeed.

u/King-Conn Jun 25 '26
Maybe, just maybe, the RCMP should use those red flag laws that were put in place years ago, and fucking follow up on RED FLAGS.
41
u/GinnAdvent Jun 25 '26
And make sure that if firearms were confiscated due to mental health issues in the first place, the appeal should be tripled exams and verified by several entities.
44
u/ADGx27 Jun 25 '26
Wasn’t tumbler ridge caused by a red flag law getting properly enforced only to immediately be overruled putting guns right back in the vicinity of the shooter? Or is that TikTok slop
28
u/BrotherLefthand Jun 25 '26
No, that's legitimate. The mom was given her guns back and failed to store them.
21
u/ADGx27 Jun 25 '26
Negligence of that level should lowkey make you able to be charged imo
13
10
u/Ihavenoideawhatidoin on Jun 26 '26
If they charged the mother they’d have to admit they fucked up giving the guns back.
7
u/IWIKapps Jun 25 '26
Question, what do you mean by lowkey there? I'm not disagreeing I just don't understand the lowkey part
2
u/gspotcowboy Jun 26 '26
Lowkey is genZ slang for playing down an opinion. Like I don't actually hate Taylor Swift but I find her persona super annoying, so I lowkey hate her
2
23
u/AresV92 Jun 25 '26
No you're correct the mother was improperly storing.
4
u/613mitch Jun 26 '26
This has not been confirmed to my knowledge and is quite possibly incorrect, since at least 2 of the 4 firearms used in that incident were previously unknown / not seized by the RCMP.
Are you able to source your claim?
0
u/AresV92 Jun 26 '26
No source just rumour could be made up for all I know, but honestly everything about this I've read online could be made up because I don't know these people and I wasn't there. Comes down to do you trust what others are telling you? I was told that some of the guns used were previously seized from the mom and then returned and that they were supposed to be locked so that the child didn't have access. Obviously if the child had the guns to perform the murders then they weren't properly secured because I can tell you that my kids can't access my guns without a cutting torch or angle grinder. Obviously securing the guns properly would not have prevented the child from acquiring other means to commit murder if they really wanted to do so.
3
u/613mitch Jun 26 '26

Other people repeating hearsay? I don't believe it at all.
I was told that some of the guns used were previously seized from the mom and then returned and that they were supposed to be locked so that the child didn't have access.
The RCMP haven't confirmed that that's the case.
Obviously if the child had the guns to perform the murders then they weren't properly secured
Considering that two of the four firearms used have been confirmed as not having been previously seized by the RCMP, Why are you assuming any of the firearms owned by the parent were used? All you're doing is spreading more unsubstantiated bullshit implicating that incorrect storage by a legal owner was the reason those kids got killed.
because I can tell you that my kids can't access my guns without a cutting torch or angle grinder. Obviously securing the guns properly would not have prevented the child from acquiring other means to commit murder if they really wanted to do so.
If you're using any of those commercial off the shelf gun "safes", they're nowhere near as secure as you're making them sound. If you're using a proper safe - sure. Not many are.
2
u/AresV92 29d ago
"They're nowhere near as secure as you're making them sound."
There is no access to my guns to pick or rake a lock or remove hinges or bolts to open the cabinet. I won't go into exact details of my storage but just to try being somewhat succinct (edit- sorry I think I failed 😅) the only way to get in the place I keep my guns is with me present or an oxy acetylene cutting torch to melt the steel or with an angle grinder/chopsaw or something similar to cut your way in. Both are kinda unavoidable so I figure I've done what I can to not contribute to the chances my kids shoot one of their friends.
My family also does train on proper firearm handling (ACTS, PROVE, safe movement) periodically, which I feel may be even more important than actually locking up the guns, but who really knows?
I also keep the ammunition separately locked even though that's not required (they are all NR) because I figure it would take too long for me to access the guns in an emergency I may as well make it difficult to load one swiftly if someone were to gain access.
I feel like too many Canadians may be doing the absolute minimum storage (if that!) and it's kinda sad that kids can even get their hands on guns unsupervised.
I had a friend that used to lean his dad's shotgun behind his mudroom door when we were done shooting cans or targets out in his field and it always struck me as really silly at the time, but I was dumb and didn't make a stink about it (this was as a young kid who hadn't even done the CFSC yet). We had loads of fun shooting soup cans off fence posts so I guess I never cared enough about the danger. I later (like highschool age) asked him about it and he agreed it was extremely stupid, but it was considered perfectly normal in his family even though it was technically illegal. Dunno if he ever gave his dad shit about it or not.

u/613mitch Jun 26 '26
As far as I know, RCMP hasn't actually confirmed if any of her guns were even involved. Last confirmed details released were that two were confirmed to have never been seized by the RCMP prior to the incident, and no details were released on the other two firearms.
Despite what the other two responders to your question have stated, unless new details have been released we don't actually know anything about the firearms used at Tumbler Ridge regarding their source.
3
u/Lumindan Jun 26 '26
I have a feeling it's getting memory holed
5
u/613mitch Jun 26 '26
Likely because the facts and optics aren't favorable to the Liberals' narrative. If there was information that made any of the past 6 years' worth of bullshit more marketable, they likely would have jumped on it.
17
u/yummybunnybear Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
The police messed up with red flag laws with the Tumbler Ridge shooting, messed up with the Nova Scotia shooting, and now they literally shot a civilian to death. How about we just take guns away from the crazies and let civilians practice a lot with handguns so they don't shoot civilians when they become officers. How about that for a "multifaceted approach"?
Edit: it's been pointed out that Tumbler Ridge was the court and not the police's fault. I stand corrected. The problem is still regarding the lack of enforcement of existing red flag laws. Apologies to the police who did their job at Tumbler Ridge.
9
u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Jun 25 '26
The court ordered the police to return the guns prior to tumbler ridge btw.
1
4
u/CoolEdgyNameX Jun 25 '26
The police did not mess up tumbler ridge at all, and actually did enforce those red flag laws.
Nova Scotia there is actually no record of an actionable verifiable complaint being made to the RCMP prior to the shootings.2
2
u/613mitch Jun 26 '26
It's quite possible those firearms were not the mother's. Nothing's been released that implicates her in this in any capacity, and 50% of the firearms used in the incident were reportedly not previously seized by the RCMP.

The name of the article is kinda misleading (thanks citynews). This isn't as bad as it could have been. He's said that the Government will respect the Supreme Court decision when the case is heard next year. He's also said we need stricter sentences for Violent Offenders.
58
u/GinnAdvent Jun 25 '26
I think the grief is that Carney has to address the calls from certain politicians mentioned tighter gun control, and the singular focus that gun is design to kill while other methods of homicide, intentional or accidental, are way higher compared to firearm related deaths from legal firearm owners.
I believe Ian Runkle has look at the recent new bail and sentencing law, and expressed that it doesn't really amount to much yet, at least from his perspective. I am waiting for a video from him to dissect that.
54
u/throwaway11100217 Jun 25 '26
Feels like Carney is trying to walk a fine line here, I don't hate the guy, he can be voted out of being party leader so even if he has different views on things he has to be careful.
It's why we need political reform, I'm sick of voting for a party who has one collective mind and where speaking out against the party can be career suicide. It's just bad design.
That being said, I think this is a big nothing burger, Carney is basically saying let's wait on what the supreme court decides on gun control and in the mean time lets focus on criminals which I agree with.
Let's see how many downvotes I get for this lol.
12
u/Natural_Comparison21 Jun 25 '26
That’s actually a pretty fine takeaway. He added nothing new. This is like one of the very rare moments he is in fact being pragmatic if he acts on what he just said. That he won’t touch anything until the court case is decided. If the judges say “Go fuck yourself.” Good chance we end up getting legislation. Or Carney in a shocking turn of events puts off the legislation and uses it as a election wedge issue. However it didn’t feel like the JT era of “We are working on making a new list of dangerous firearms that don’t belong in our communities.”
23
u/PhantomNomad al Jun 25 '26
From everything Carney has said about gun control, which is next to nothing, I don't think it is very high on his list no matter how much other may push. He's way more practical then Trudeau was. Trudeau was 100% feelings before fact. While Carney could be doing more to help get prices down or at least stable, he's limited by the market. He can't just make housing appear over night like PP thinks he can. He also knows you can't get rid of violent crime over night, even by banning everything. Carney is all for big business I know, but right now for gun owners I don't think that is a bad thing. It means his focus is not on us, for now.
10
u/Lumindan Jun 25 '26
From everything Carney has said about gun control, which is next to nothing
We're just skipping the part where he's doubled down on the program every time it's brought up.
I don't think it is very high on his list no matter how much other may push
750 million dollars says otherwise. The buyback has actually accelerated it's pace under his tenure.
While Carney could be doing more to help get prices down or at least stable, he's limited by the market. He can't just make housing appear over night like PP thinks he can
Oh PP bad. Okay.
He also knows you can't get rid of violent crime over night, even by banning everything.
That's a lot of speculation for someone who put Fraser in charge.
Carney is all for big business I know, but right now for gun owners I don't think that is a bad thing. It means his focus is not on us, for now.
He can't touch it now because the optics of opposing the SCC would be horrible. The last two shootings are going to be memory holed because they don't present well.
Carney is no friend to firearms owners, he will 100% dumpster us when he needs a good news cycle just like previous Liberal leaders.
11
u/throwaway11100217 Jun 25 '26
Good take, I agree with you. He does seem like he maybe realizes that these gun control measures put in by his predecessor and party are not going to achieve what they hope, but to say so would be putting a target on his back from within his own party.
I often wish he had ran for the conservatives and won as I feel his progressive mentality would work well with them, but alas that was not the opportunity he was presented with.
Here's hoping the supreme court sees the nonsense and we can rebuild gun and crime legislation that actually works to prevent these tragedies, but I won't be holding my breath.

u/PhantomNomad al Jun 25 '26
If he was the leader of the CPC then I might actually vote conservative. I absolutely loath PP. Because of PP I vote NDP in my Alberta riding knowing there is no chance they will win. BTW PP ran in the by-election in my riding so I was able to vote directly against him.
7
u/Lumindan Jun 25 '26

What is it about the conservative platform you disagree with?
0
u/PhantomNomad al Jun 26 '26
That they don't actually have one.
6
u/Lumindan Jun 26 '26
So you dislike them based on vibes and not policies then?
1
u/PhantomNomad al 29d ago
I dislike him because he's not a good leader. He hasn't put forward any decent policies. His affordability measures are half baked and only support his political allies, much like Carney. Traditionally teh conservatives will cut social programs and at the worst time to cut them. Both of them won't tax higher incomes and keep pushing trickle down economics, which hasn't worked in 40 years. The only thing I agree with him on is firearms ownership, but that isn't enough for me to vote for him.

u/mywaaaaife Jun 25 '26
You loathe PP because you still watch CBC or is this based on your own actual independent thought?
4
u/PhantomNomad al Jun 25 '26
I actually watch Global and CTV in the morning and listen to CBC radio in the evenings. I like As It Happens after the 6 o'clock news. PP makes a fool of him self in every question period. All he has is three word phrases and no substance. I've watch him flounder in parliament for 20+ years. He's contributed exactly zero. He should have never been leader of the CPC. I actually voted for Harper and Sheer, but they lost me with O'Toole and PP. The only thing I agree with Poilievre on is firearms. But that's not enough for me to actually vote for him. I also didn't vote for Carney because I can't stand the Liberal party. It's the most corrupt party we have. I do actually form my own opinions. Just because someone doesn't like the CPC doesn't mean they only listen to the CBC. I actually do think the CBC has a more balanced news cast then either Global of CTV. They rag on the Liberals quite a bit. Especially when it was Trudeau in power.

I'll chime in and say that the only PP media i see is put on YouTube by conservatives and I loathe him. He's slimy, condescending, and intellectually dishonest.
Trudeau was somewhat less slimy, but completely dishonest.
I would vote for Harper in a second.
I would vote for Chretien or Martin if there was better controls for corruption.
Carney seems okay, but very hemmed in by the party.

I found his answer to be good news. He did not reply "yes", brought up consulting experts like the RCMP, and steered into mentioning bail reform.
These are the things we want him to do, and his responses were absolutely not what I expected.
This clip has my interest.
1
u/noydoc Jun 25 '26
This is how I feel about Tim Houston- I think if he wasn’t beholden to the PC Party members he’d be much more moderate
29
u/Ov3rReadKn1ght0wl Jun 25 '26
Yeah, looking at his answer, it's basically a non committal reiteration of what we already knew was in the pipeline. They are going to look to round out centerfire magfed semi bans and do so via classification review. RCMP and insiders get input. Usual bit.
14
u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 Jun 25 '26
He also said gun control has to be within Constitutional Law, hopefully that means he's pushing back from outright bans based on feeling and vibes.
11
u/Lumindan Jun 25 '26
He's said that the Government will respect the Supreme Court decision when the case is heard next year
It's going to be really funny either way.
SCC rules the OIC was bad, they'll just amend the firearms act with their majority.
SCC rules they were used correctly, they'll just keep pushing that boulder.
He's also said we need stricter sentences for Violent Offenders.
Carney says a lot of things then gets his ministers to take the heat.
Judge him by his actions not words.
8
u/HappyCan7250 Jun 25 '26
Carneys all big talk, and this government is so inefficient too, we have nothing to sorry about.
Tumbler ridge got memory holed, but maybe that's just cause it wasn't Quebec, but we've seen quite a few high profile cases tied to the SKS and nothing has been done to it yet. Im not worried. Nathalie will screech eternally but this government is too slow and incompetent to even do it if they tried. No worries guys.
2
u/Coinoperated1 Jun 25 '26
He also mention a few times, a multifaceted approach, so not simply jumping to banning a particular firearm, but multi-prong approach to public safety. You can see / hear he is actively trying not to jump on, let’s ban the SKS or extend the list of prohibited firearms. He knows it’s not good public policy and is a distraction from his other initiatives . Just my 2 cents
6
u/Lumindan Jun 25 '26
He also mention a few times, a multifaceted approach, so not simply jumping to banning a particular firearm, but multi-prong approach to public safety
That's just politician speech. There's no substance there.
You can see / hear he is actively trying not to jump on, let’s ban the SKS or extend the list of prohibited firearms. He knows it’s not good public policy and is a distraction from his other initiatives
And if you believe that I have a bridge to sell you.
It's honestly so impressive people keep giving Carney the benefit of the doubt when he has doubled down hard on taking away your firearms.
He has had every chance to kill the he program.
Instead he platforms provost and keeps it rolling.

I have a feeling they will use this to push some sort of surveillance system to watch gun owners.
93
u/Scary-Detail-3206 Jun 25 '26
They already have one. Our PALs are run through the police database daily and flagged if you have an interaction with the police.
I was target shooting with some buddies on crown land years ago and a nearby neighbour called the RCMP saying we were firing full autos. A cop came, checked out our bolt action rifles, shot the shit with us for 10 mins, then left. Because there were firearms present during that interaction there was a flag placed on our PALs. I called the CFO and they read the cop’s notes and removed the flag.
47
u/timooteexo Jun 25 '26
Kind of ridiculous a flag stays solely based on a call only to be unconfirmed by a cop afterwards and that you, as the gun owner, had to call to get it removed. It should have never been there in the first place after initial investigation.
11
u/TarkovSundays Jun 25 '26
That’s weird…. What province? I had a similar call where someone thought I was doing bad things but I was just shooting my SKS… had multiple cruisers show up and even a conservation officer. In the end I was in my legal right to be shooting there and was let go but my PAL wasn’t flagged.
1
3
u/Scary-Detail-3206 Jun 26 '26
And it was resolved by a 5 minute phone call to the CFO. What a waste of resources all around.
16
u/boozefiend3000 Jun 25 '26
Similar shit. Met up with a guy to buy a rifle, some loser saw and called the cops. We got swarmed. Flag on my PAL

Answered yes to the mental health problems question during my last renewal and a local cop working for the CFO called me to ask some questions. She brought it up, she was saying any interaction with the police involving guns is automatically put on your file
0
u/baconpizzaman 29d ago
Like even speeding tickets? I got a speeding ticket last year, should I call my CFO? 😅

u/boozefiend3000 29d ago
Was there guns involved with your speeding ticket?

How did you learn about that flag?
4
u/Scary-Detail-3206 Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
I went to buy a new gun at Cabelas about a month later and after the counter guy ran my PAL he told me there was a flag on my account and that I would have to call the CFO to have it removed. They refused me the sale as a result.
12
u/SceneAccomplished549 Jun 25 '26
No shit? Any sort of interaction at all?
4
u/Scary-Detail-3206 Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
The cop ran our IDs, which triggered the flag. I’m not sure what the threshold is for a flag, I’ve dealt with the police many times since but always as a witness or someone reporting a crime. I deal with them regularly at work as well in the same context.
He was a decent guy thankfully, basically just saying that he has to come investigate if people report full auto fire. When I called the CFO, the lady I spoke to told me the cops notes explicitly said I was doing nothing wrong, so it was a short phone call.
6
u/Zen_Bonsai Jun 25 '26
What does the flag do?
4
8
u/I-LOVE-HENRY-RIFLES Jun 25 '26
They already are calling the spouses of gun owners to see if they can get someone to snitch
21
u/Uncle_Ted_1942 Jun 25 '26
Maybe this is just fuddlore, but doesn’t having an RPAL give police a right to search your home warrant free if they want to check if you’re storing them properly?
Could be just straight bullshit I was told, or it could be a partial truth where it’s just easier for them to get a warrant.
Idk. I’m dumb. I could Google, but I’m more so driving the point that they definitely already do watch us more than people just like us without guns.
15
u/SceneAccomplished549 Jun 25 '26
I believe they would need a valid reason to enter your home, having the warrant would probably make it easier for them.
I guess where I was going with it was them using some sort of AI system.
But you ain't wrong.
13
u/Uncle_Ted_1942 Jun 25 '26
Yes I had been under the impression that legally a valid reason could literally just be if you had an RPAL.
And I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they enact some sort of AI driven surveillance system. Cheaper and more effective than paying a bunch of humans to do the surveillance.
The times the AI fucks up and ruins someone’s life like those Flock cameras in the USA sometimes do will be treated just like how it is in the states: it’s unfortunate that happened but it’s right way more often than it’s wrong.
Time to finish my cabin in the middle of nowhere.
1
12
u/beesthatlikebees Jun 25 '26
Its for people that own restricted guns and its consent based, so if you deny they would get a warrant but I’ve never heard of any real issues with it, might be soon if they change how the inspections work
6
u/HatchingCougar Jun 25 '26
Not just for restricted
If they believe that you own 10 or more firearms (can all be NR) or even a single prohib, a firearms officer can make an appointment without warrant for an inspection
Regular cops cannot do the inspections (currently) and need a warrant / and or emergency circumstances to enter
7
u/Practical-Mix69 Jun 25 '26
They cannot just barge into your house. They have to give you ample notice for an “inspection” and a firearms officer has to be present.
2
u/goodfleance Jun 25 '26
They can only inspect your Restricted and Prohibited firearms storage, "at a reasonable time" and with I believe 24hrs notice. And only like once every month or so max. It's not a warrant to search anything else but "plain sight" can cover a lot.
1
u/baconpizzaman 29d ago
Question: Do they check the registration status of them? Say my friend bought a gun in Ontario, had a gun given to him that was never registered and like 50 years old, then moved to Québec and never registered them to Quebecs registry. Do they check that? Or more just PAL status, if they are properly locked up, bill of sale, etc?

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 Jun 25 '26
Maybe this is just fuddlore, but doesn’t having an RPAL give police a right to search your home warrant free if they want to check if you’re storing them properly?
Police can do that with a regular PAL as well, but they will call and make an appointment,.

> In fact, let's start with tighter knife control first because there were
Dividing and conquering is a harmful approach, because it will be used against you, and I doubt you're prepared for someone to take that at face value and create a bill to ban more knives and strengthen the ban platform by saying more gun bans are needed.
10
u/DwayneGretzky306 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Exactly. Canadian knife laws make even less sense than firearms laws. Gravity/OTF that can deploy with one hand illegal. With that attitude, tumb studs/holes will be as well.
5
u/MacintoshEddie Jun 25 '26
And they'd get banned if we start pointing it out and whining that they aren't banned and it's not fair.
I'm sure op would be sad and confused if the government said they were right, and so knives with assisted opening are now prohibited and so are all semi-auto firearms.
3
u/DwayneGretzky306 Jun 25 '26
I dont disagree with the PM that a multi faceted approach is necessary. I just think that the "faceting" on firearms has already been over done. Supreme Court will unlikely but hopefully recognize this was too far.
Better mental health support and education is clearly needed in this country.
3
u/MacintoshEddie Jun 25 '26
I wouldn't say it's done at all.
An important part is something that we ourselves should be doing and that's taking a hard look at ourselves, because the painful truth is that the prime reason for ongoing gun bans is right here in groups like ours.
We as a voting block are often exploited and attached to fringe, violent, divisive, elements.
There's a reason why sometimes when I offer to bring a new person to the shooting range they get scared, because they're worried about the kind of people they might encounter. Like guys who actively hate them based on things like which political party they support, or what they look like, or where they were born, or their religion, or their sexuality, or their gender. A significant number of gun owners are intolerant, and not the good kind of intolerant either, but the divisive and extremist and hateful kind.
Years ago, back when I used to go to a lot more meetups, a conversation sparked up about defensive use of firearms, because one of the big publicity cases was in the news. So this guy starts shouting, actually shouting, about how he wishes someone would dare break into his house so he can kill them in self defense. Most of the people there didn't really grasp why a person might be concerned at the idea of someone just champing at the bit over the idea of shooting someone.

Yea fair enough - I just meant the restrictions and legislation in place, and items being banned in name. I would 100% support additional licensing / background check for wilderness carry/suppressors.
I dont associate with people like that but I certainly have some relations that are that way, and totally understand why people might be afraid of them.

u/Zen_Bonsai Jun 25 '26
There's so many knives that you can legally purchase at house of knives that if you were to buy international CBSA can confiscate saying they are illegal.
I had a custom mushroom non locking mushroom foarging knife siezed by them. I had to call multiple times and finally got a senior manager who said it's not a violation and it will be released. Then somehow it was lost in their system the next day. Fuckers
5
u/GinnAdvent Jun 25 '26
That argument has come up several times, and honestly the only other thing I can think of beside bringing up a direct comparison would be.
Death happens every day on frequent basis, and it's really due to many factors in our society that culminate what we saw today.
To single out one variable while grossly neglect other as aspects is what politicians do to further their cause to get more votes, but didn't really fundamentally address the root cause of the issue.
4
u/MacintoshEddie Jun 25 '26
Focus on the underlying reason. The motivation to harm.
Trying to bring up knife bans in hopes of using reverse psychology to get someone to resist gun bans is an outright doomed idea.
When people try to deflect and divide, bring it back to the main focus: the desire to cause harm.

From calibre magazine on X:
“PSC told me they're examining "the legal framework for firearms, devices, magazines and ammunition to modernize the regime and ensure Canadians’ safety, with an emphasis on simplicity and consistency."
I expect an amended definition of prohib, rather than a codified FRT.”
6
u/Goliad1990 Jun 26 '26
They've been saying those exact words since the last OIC ban in 2024. That's how they're describing the "classification review".
4
u/Dependent_Border7961 Jun 25 '26
Okay, but what does any of that mean in terms of future legislation? Or is it too early to speculate?
17
u/EnvironmentBright697 Jun 25 '26
Hard to say, but what it does confirm is that they are working on some type of legislation and we can be sure it won’t be good.

u/mwmwmwmwmmdw 29d ago
also to note this has been the rhetoric of the liberal party since at least 2017. i heard them talking about fixing up the classification system since they had re-banned the 858's. they've never not said they are looking at doing some big overhaul.
back then their plan was create a new 12-X catagory of prohib to grandfather semi auto owners into.
2
u/Goliad1990 28d ago edited 28d ago
It's referring to the "review of the classification regime" that was was recommended by the "Expert Advisory Panel" that the government put together after the C-21 amendments failed to pass SECU a few years ago. The report generated by that panel is now public, and if you read it, it's very obvious that the primary intention of the review is to simplify classification by updating the Firearms Act to prohibit all semi-autos that take detachable magazines.
Firearms with potentially high rates of fire – that are self-loading, with detachable magazines, and tactical designs – should generally be prohibited or restricted.
...Therefore, by the 2010s semi-automatic firearms with detachable magazines were classified as non-restricted, restricted or prohibited firearms depending on their physical characteristics... The regulations of May 2020 and December 2024 were important steps in rationalizing the classification regime as they declared as prohibited many models of semi-automatic rifles capable of sustained fire that can receive large detachable magazines.
Examining "the legal framework for firearms, devices, magazines and ammunition" is very broad, so expect a lot of additional regulations and restrictions around magazines, peripherals and features in addition to the prohibition on mag-fed semis.

Holy shit. A shooting 3 days ago and we already know the firearm used. Tumbler Ridge happened back in February and not a peep from the RCMP or government on what was used.

I think that probably was because there was blurry footage of the incident. It's finally coming out in the news now that it was an SKS but within a day of it happening you could see the basic features of the rifle. My thoughts were "Oh boy, here's exactly what "that group" has been waiting for. Shit!"
If it wasn't for that cell phone video we would probably still be in the dark about what firearm(s) were inviolved.

Be careful what you wish for. BC’s attorney general actually called for a ban on machete.

u/Misophoniakiel Jun 25 '26
I think we should try making killing people illegal and punishable by law. That would stop it
13
u/Response-Cheap Jun 25 '26
There were 131 homicides by beating or strangulation (unarmed assailants) in 2024 in Canada. We need stronger hand control. To my knowledge not one hand has been banned to date. I see people walking down the street armed, with hands, left and right. 👀

Or the Greyhound bus incident https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Tim_McLean (warning its gruesome)
Guy is currently out of prison

u/GinnAdvent Jun 25 '26
That's one of the infamous one and alot of controversies with it.
Lots of people got PTSD because of it as well.
So everyone and the justice system agreed that it's a severe psychotic disorder, but completely over look the how the knife was used in the case?
Why I say it should be reexamine again and Carney should apply multi faceted approach to prevent people from bringing knifes and sharp objects on to mass transportation system.

u/WeightedDips95 Jun 25 '26
Reading these comments, and what carney said, it’s clear the guy is a master manipulator. No one can conclusively decipher the intentions of his words. Arguments can easily be made either way.
Judge him by his actions. He’s over a year in and hasn’t abandoned his anti-gun crusade.
8
u/Lumindan Jun 26 '26
100 percent this. People get sucked into the word soup he pushes and they spice it with hopium.
The reality is he's doubled down at every turn when he could have dropped it and come out with more votes.

All they want is more control, doesnt matter what the topic is.
Never waste a tragedy to advance your evil agenda.

He'll start banning stuff once scandals start surfacing.
Trudeau used gun control to distract from his scandals. It worked.
He will do the same.
Carney helped people like Trump evade taxes.
Scandals and gun control incoming.

How about an Inept Politicians Control Act… Liars and low IQ should not be in Power.

u/Hopeful_Relation_441 Jun 25 '26
he also hinted they will be reforming the firearms act
20
u/Azules023 Jun 25 '26
They did hint at it during the last OIC last year so that’s not surprising. But with a majority this will allow them to push it through.

Keep banning guns it will only get worse. Liberals have no understanding of how the real world works.

i like to see a way for certain lobbyist groups to be banned. Kind of want lobbying to be banned completely. Or inaccurate claims to be indictable as fraud.

u/dirkdiggler2011 Jun 25 '26
I agree.
The focus should be on controlling the flow of guns from the south and the flow of human trash being allowed to enter the country to use those guns.

They don’t give a flying fuck about crime or safety. Lots of shooting rampages in Toronto lately committed with the same banned guns. This is all to restrict the tax-paying plebs so they don’t revolt against our govt-protected oligarchy.
It’s time to speak up and push back against this.

It’s often hard to draw strong conclusions when the sample size is small, but that’s not the case here. We’re talking about a firearm with somewhere between two hundred thousand and one million legal owners in Canada. With numbers that large, if simply owning an SKS created a real public safety problem, the data would show it clearly. We would see a noticeable pattern of shootings involving this specific rifle. We don’t. The absence of such a pattern, despite such a massive sample size, is itself strong evidence that legal ownership of the SKS isn’t the issue.

Does motor oil damage wood and plastic/polymer? Thinking about taking some ‘old single shot .22’ gats out of commission and keeping them in long term storage in my basement.
Filling an airtight lockable container with oil, throwing some ‘old hunting tools’ in with the oil, and then locking the container and leaving it in my locked storage room in my home.
Tell me your thoughts on this guys. Will it cause damage? Bad idea even if it doesn’t damage anything? I’m all ears and look forward to hearing ANY and ALL opinions on this thought of mine.
3
u/_axeman_ Jun 25 '26
I would just clean the shit out of it, use an actual gun oil on it then seal it in a plastic bag with a few dessicant packs thrown in. Or cosmoline.
1
u/Uncle_Ted_1942 Jun 25 '26
I know the oil would mess with the wood, but I figured for the metal and polymer motor oil might have been a better alternative due to the volume I could use to fully submerge it cheaply.
I would want it to be in a tough, airtight container though. My storage room gets humid and wet, and the insulation is no good so it tends to change with the seasons.
3
u/goodfleance Jun 25 '26
I think CLC makes a cosmoline product for exactly this. Also most modern polymers resist bore solvent and guns should be oiled so I believe motor oil would be fine.

Going to copy my comment on another thread
Truthfully I think he dodged it and closed the book, he gave enough to shut the reporter and left it at that. The second video CCFR posted, he mentioned “well we have a court case so we need to see the decision sometime next year and then see how we can work within the law because we need to ensure that”
Literally said “let’s wait next year” I honestly think they’ll burry it. It’s not popular, the current regime is an abject failure and they can’t even muster the money to do it.
I pray I’m not huffing hopium, but it really came off as deflection and “we don’t want to do this again”
→ More replies (1)

u/Physical_Progress105 Jun 25 '26
Gun control is not the issue. Illegal guns coming in is. Maybe look onto how and where criminals are getting their guns. Start there. Wasting money targeting law bidding citizens is only pandering for votes. Not making the country safer

u/PrestigiousMark315 29d ago
we need a better government, one that requires the ownership of 1 firearm per household

u/China_bot42069 Jun 25 '26
The previous government and this one has directly gaslit the public with “needing to do more” while “actively doing less” with reduced gun crime sentences and mandatory minimums, while hammering/banning essentially everything. They know what they are doing. But it’s such a touchy subject and most people have mentally checked out they can keep doing it. The elbows up (ankles up in my words) ignores all the faltering because “trump”. The gun file is just one area of incompetence and malice. The government has directly lead to the loss of lives not for their class but the average citizen. Just last week in my community the rcmp put out a warning about the child sexual predator who had a high likely hood to reoffend. And for the most part everyone asked why release him and ruin more lives. But what was more shocking (I think discourse is good but here I’m shaking my head) there were people defending the predator. I’m also in the west and I’ve heard this is a bigger issue out east but wtf is going on. Is the general public that brain washed. I’ve start tuning things out, news, media, even social media is just filled with OF content and honestly my sanity has come back. But being a earl thirties male, with young kids, I can see the regression and frustration. But the government has had a major part in that. I miss 2014 Canada, I miss 2019 Canada. It feels like the point of change has been passed, the train has left the station, the ship has sailed. If they want to ban what’s left, let them. This is coming from someone with 30plus fire arms. Once everything is banned and this happens maybe then the public will wake up. Fuck poly. I don’t have any sympathy for them anymore. They became the evil they set out to fight. Misogyny, stereotypes and bias. I suggest the ones really frustrated in here just go outside and enjoy the weather and your loved ones. It’s not worth these people don’t need our full mental bandwidth all the time. Rant over.
TL:DR ankles up touch grass

u/Dill_Pickle_Tears Jun 25 '26
If you watch the video, this is actually a good sign. Behind the politician talk, it seems like he’s both saying “we are fulfilling our promise” and “we need to operate within the law and there is currently a court case determining whether this was actually down”
Along with the shift towards discussing non-gun control based crime prevention, I think if you read between the lines the LPC is truly trying to take the off ramp. They won’t scrap the buyback or bans unless they’re made to, and I’m really starting to think they won’t fight it if that happens.
As for the SKS, it really sounds like a “nope” with respect to banning, with more political vagueness ofc

I’m not a fan of the LPC, but this does feel like a big brain move by Carney. It’s pretty obvious he knows this is failed policy, but he wants the SCC to give him the out. Which ironically, should have the effect of significantly increasing Canadians property rights through case law.
The man just wants the votes, he isn’t JT. Let the man cook.
0
u/WeightedDips95 Jun 25 '26
Wtf I just read? I’m not a fan of the LPC, but let me make excuses for Carney, who is clearly a central control authoritarian type with no time for civilian gun ownership but also doesn’t want to get his hands dirty, not backing down from completely regarded gun control regime. Let the man cook what? And how long do we have to wait? It’s already been a year and they’re not backing away. This is some Qanon level tea leaf reading delusion

The problem would mostly disappear if we got rid of liberals and commies from politics, as well as the criminals they imported and/or let out of prison.
1
u/lagavulinski Jun 25 '26
First of all, I don't agree with gun control, especially how the feds are handling it.
But whataboutism is the worst and also least effective form of debating or arguing a point. It's a fallacy that suggests that people can only do one thing or another, and not both. Bringing up stabbing is a different issue altogether. It is a form of deflection that disingenuously asserts that you care about lives, when you're blatantly deflecting from the deaths that are related to guns.
What Carney said in the link you posted:
1. His responsibility is to act within constitutional responsibilities, which means respecting the supreme court appeal that the CCFR is currently tabling
2. He specifically said to focus more on repeat offenders - which everyone and their mothers have been saying since day 1, regardless of their stance on gun control - along with gang activities and incels, and that the crimes need to be punished properly
3. Working with the provinces

We need stricter control on people making laws based on feelings.
