so what are the thoughts on the Uvalde school shooting?

Disasters like this are central to discussions of gun control.

I know most of the takes are going to be garbage, interested to see if there will be anything new and reasonable in the replies.

What take is there to have? Easily preventable, police sitting on their ass from the new reports coming out, schools should have security teams. Gun control doesn't work

Nvm I see in your replies that you don't particularly care for the OIC since you're "still able to do what you want". Absolutely ridiculous. You're already expecting garbage takes from us so you may as well have not said anything.

correct. I am not opposed to the OIC. I would have preferred it be done with specific, objective parameters instead.

I agree with its objective to reduce availability of low recoil semi-auto carbines. I don't agree it's the right method, it's missed a bunch of stuff, and very poor job of communication, explanation. Restrict vs. prohib another aspect.

He didn't have a licence though. In fact, he had a firearms prohibition. And the RCMP were informed that he has firearms, and yet nothing was done.

Why should I have to pay for the RCMPs incompetence and this countries inability to secure our borders?

the OIC includes things that aren't "assault weapons". I'm OK with the 20mm and 10kJ rules. Too bad about the antique elephant guns, if there are any.

I'm not so keen on the proposed handgun ban. But I'm definitely not asking for them to become unrestricted or for broader authorizations to carry.

the "slippery slope" idea is a fallacy. Policy doesn't move because it's sliding down a hill. If it's moving, it's because enough people want it to move. "Gun control" is not some new idea that's never been tried.

“Enough people”… yeah, enough people who have no stake in the issue at hand and have no knowledge at all of the process of acquiring a firearm. Ask yourself how many Toronto voters would really want to ban the mini 14 and VZ 58 if it wasn’t for the liberals milking gun control for votes?

I guess you better start making better arguments convincing Toronto voters how the mini 14 isn't a threat to public safety. Those voters believed the LPC's pitches and not those of the anti OIC people here. Being sour about it won't help. Or get the CPC to dump the social conservatives, economic austerity, and truck fascists that prevent them from winning elections and doing something different from the Liberals.

it's not "sliding" from it's own inherent momentum. There's no physical process. Any govt can decide to make as large or small a move in either direction, on any point of control, over whatever timeline they choose. It's a terrible metaphor.

It's tightening because most people are convinced more controls would be better. If people are convinced that looser controls would be better, that's the way it will go.
