Milsurps / Prohib Deactivated firearms?

Since so much has been banned I wanted to try something new and ask y'all about dewats. Anyone own them? Or hate them? I can imagine we might get a lot of dewat AR's come october of this year (since they were originally registered). Better that than handed in.

Just curious what r/canadaguns thinks about that category of "non-firearms" in general.

They tend to sell for more money than a working firearm. It's a shame to see them welded up and the current deactivation standards allow for no moving parts. I would rather see them sent somewhere they can survive as working guns.

Yeah I guess that's just economics. Very few people have the license for full or converted autos so the market for deactivated autos is bigger.

edit: Honestly I wonder what the gunsmiths feel when they deactivate a historic firearm. They must feel sad too I'd imagine.

Probably something similar as a vet who has to put a dog down id imagine

It hurts. I have done things for money that I do not like.

I used to have a beautiful Sten Mk2. It cocked and clicked, could still field strip it. I sold it over a decade ago way too cheap.

Old spec deactivation right? That's a jewel for sure. They aren't making any more of those.

Yeah, it basically just had the barrel welded in place and plugged.

I managed to get a Chinese Tokarev just before the handgun freeze. It cost $299 brand new, plus tax.

Deactivated, they sell for $600 and up on gunpost now and they're welded completely solid.

Definitely not worth it in most cases, you can probably get a full metal Airsoft gun for far less and at least you can actually pull the trigger on it.

The problem is that the Airsoft replicas are being classed as replicas and that in itself is a criminal code charge under the firearms act.

I am looking at a deactivated/Dewat Romanian Ak right now, and let me tell you, it looks way better in my man cave then it does cut to pieces in parliaments disposal bins...

In the military collecting vain of things dewats do have their place as something you can openly display whether it be on a wall or on a mannequin unfortunately with the current deactivation process it renders with no moving parts with very obvious signs of deactivation while dewats do command some money because "anyone can own them"

A Dewat that has old spec deactivation with the ability to charge and dry fire will always command much more money then one that is welded up solid in my opinion this past weekend I had the opportunity buy a 1945 ppsh41 welded up for $1400 roughly

How would one deactivate something made of a synthetic stock like a p90? Looking at one on auction as its an option

Been considering getting a deact. AK47, but damn, with current prices they go for, I might as well get an almost 1:1 airsoft AK47!

Me and the boys have all decided to deactivate our restricted rifles should we be forced to come october, we would sooner do this then bolster their numbers and hand them anything.

I would highly recommend you simply chop the receiver and turn it into a parts kit if you absolutely have to. Deactivation is a far worse option and renders every part on the gun useless. Also the amnesty will be extended because of the supreme court case.

So strip the reciver and cut it in half? And just keep the upper? What am i gonna do with an MCX upper lol

The upper is not the regulated part so just keep it id say

AR uppers are not considered the receiver BUT they were made a prohibited device in the OIC so you can’t keep the upper either.

And just wait until they say the “parts” are also prohibited. With the description of an empty metal tube (no spring and no follower) being a high capacity magazine I await the future attempted boot upon the neck.

Outside of sentimental value, there's very little reason to create or buy a dewat when Airsoft guns are available.

Airsoft build quality has improved massively in the last 10 years. They make for excellent wall hangers that unlike dewats can actually be pulled down and used to have tons of fun with from time to time at airsoft events.

I sometimes bring airsoft guns to the range to zero them for upcoming games and the look they get from other shooters who see them on the gun rack is priceless.

Historical value.

u/Murray3-Dvideos May 05 '26

I suppose... butchered history.

u/CanadianTravis2626 May 05 '26

I don’t disagree, would rather it not happen but of course it still has value

The whole concept of a dewat makes no sense to me. If it's not a gun, and to be clear, a dewat isn't a gun, then why have it around gathering dust? The fact that some people pay to turn their functional firearms into -goldfish walkers- speaks to the stupidity of mankind.

Deactivated firearms are absolutely useless and not worth a single red cent in my eyes, I dont care if they are historic or a family heirloom, a Deactivated firearm is absolutely useless

I seen some moron had a Deactivated UZI on Gunpost the other day for 3500$

Rocks in his head

Please do not fold and deactivate anything, id rather sell at a loss than deactivate

2

u/soviet_toster May 05 '26

You might as well just buy the airsoft equivalent at least you can dry fire it

1

u/Mysterious_Sleep7443 May 05 '26

I absolutely agree 100%

Would you seriously not buy a dewat Luger for $100?

Unless you corny of course you would.

It’s worth whatever someone is willing to pay, regardless of your opinion.
