Buy recommendations Is this the best .22 option?

Hey, I am again having the itch to fill the gun safe abit more. Pure investment if you ask me to be fair.

As I cry seeing all my buds in the US with their ARs, I am looking at 22s. Is the TM22 the best price/quality option out there? To be fair im only going to use it for fun because ammo is dirt cheap. Any other choices I should consider?

Feel free to tell me I'm an idiot.

Cheers

The TM22's are nice rifles. What is best for you depends on what you wish to do with it. Personally I would get the all metal version instead of the plastic version. You can do a lot with them. Ruger 10/22's are also a solid choice. You can turn it into anything you want it to be. Both are solid choices.

Price is attractive, spend as much for a sight and honestly "play around" on the range. Ammo is cheap. It would purely for range fun.

5

u/Remote_Mistake6291 May 27 '26

If you have no plans to modify it then go for it.

1

u/Evilstib May 27 '26

Can you explain why “modifying” changes their plans?

18

u/Remote_Mistake6291 May 27 '26

There are many more modifications available for the 10/22 than there are for the TM22. You can not change the body or internals on a TM22 and barrels are not readily available. You can change the body, chassis, internals, barrel and anything else you wish to change on a 10/22. The 10/22 is just much more modular than the TM22 and thus much more modifiable. The 10/22 has also been around for over 75 years so there are more custom parts available.

u/RiskClassic889 May 30 '26

Would you also say that the 10/22 have less feeding problems? I read a lot of Derya problem with ammo jamming ( looking to buy 22LR rifle too)

1

u/Remote_Mistake6291 May 30 '26

No. I have multiples of both and the feeding issues are about the same.

1

u/RiskClassic889 May 30 '26

Thanks ! I know It’s an unrelated question but do you know if SBI ST-22 gave less feeding problems?

1

u/Remote_Mistake6291 May 30 '26

I have two SBI ST-22's, Two Dlask, and two factory Rugers. Failures all seem similar. They are minimal and dependent on ammo used among other factors. None of my 6 TM22's have had real feeding issues. The odd rifle may be worse than average, but I haven't experienced it or seen anyone at the range have major issues. What is your goal for your .22?

u/RiskClassic889 May 30 '26

Plinking / fun/ mostly indoor range max 25 yards. For precision , looking for Cz 457..

Have the plastic. Want the metal. Yup

Do i have to explain why? I just don't have that much time

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Ahhh thats why dad never came back with the milk. Apologies kind sir. 🤣

Best option is the 10/22 - it's the more reliable and has the most options to modify.

However, a TM22 is cheap and cheerful and mostly works fine out of the box.

But, it will cost at least double to build a 10/22 equivalent of a TM22. The 10/22 build will be much more serviceable than a TM22 (i.e. easier to clean and fix as replacement parts are readily available).

4

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

I like the look of the TM22, price is attractive as well. Im not against the 10/22. It would be pure range fun gun

7

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 May 27 '26

I just back from a lunch range trip - just magdumped ~300 rounds out of a modified 10/22 so I'm a bit partial to them 😂

The 10/22 is also easier to clean and takedown than a TM22.

But if you want a cheap gun, the TM22 is not bad and is surprisingly accurate. I have last year's TM22 model with the full length barrel and handguard. Build quality is fine, shoots fine, avoid the 25 round magazines, those jam.

1

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

I dont mind full length, it could be fun to see how accurate it can be in range.

4

u/TheSockington May 27 '26

I managed about 1.5” at 100yards with a decent scope. It was very ammo dependant though. Some much worse.

4

u/pewpewlepew May 27 '26

I just ordered a 10/22 over a TM22 as my first .22 simply due to the fact that it's much less likely to be banned. The AR vibes of the TM22 and extended mags makes it "scary" to some 🙄

2

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

That's something I didnt think of... good point

2

u/BrotherLefthand May 27 '26

Bergara BXR > stock 10/22 you build up.

BXR has everything you want out of a build with room to grow.

5

u/Few_Lynx2224 May 27 '26

Purely for range fun probably best bang for your buck, although the newer ones with the 12" barrel are pretty appealing

4

u/Cock_ball_dickin May 27 '26

I personally prefer the 10/22, but the TM22s are great rifles too

5

u/Spydude84 May 27 '26

Get the Pro model, it's aluminum at least.

Going to be honest, I love my TM22, but it's objectively a horrible gun. It's still probably the best tactical option we have.

Mine was having an absurd amount of failures to eject (1 every 4 rounds on average) and a couple light strikes. I managed to fix the issue by removing the left extractor, it runs fine now.

In the process of cleaning it, I stripped the threads off the handguard, breaking it, and having to install a helicoil. Not the end of the world, but it sucked.

Besides poor QC and low quality aluminum, having to clean it by removing the rail that holds the optic is just poor design. Having a POI shift after cleaning it is stupid.

I would recommend that people buy an AR-15 chambered in .22lr instead, but that's not an option.

I also own the 10/22 carbine and it's great in many ways, but the stock grip angle sucks, and finding a chassis that is the equivalent of the TM22 is impossible. The traditional stock drop also is not great for mounting an optic wirh a riser, you'll need the lowest mount option you can get, and even then it still feels too high.

1

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Well damn, without any changes in legislation coming soon we are hopeless. The fact that a .22 is our only tactical/sporting option is sad. Regardless I will have a look at the local shop to see what they recommend too.

9

u/pooshlinger May 27 '26

Flash is all plastic, basically an airsoft gun. Spend the extra hundo on a pro

3

u/Q-Ball7 In the end, it's taxes all the way down May 27 '26

It’s the third best option.

The second best is the Pro model, and the absolute best one you can get is the Cadet.

People complain about muh plastic but forget the Nylon 66 exists.  This is basically a modern version of that.

3

u/EnggyAlex Alex's Homebrew May 27 '26

Get the 12" aluminum one

3

u/Parking_Media May 27 '26

You're an idiot for not having one already

3

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Good argument for the wife.

2

u/One-Coffee-2621 May 27 '26

Tell her you need two, his & hers

5

u/3e_Design May 27 '26

I like them. My youngest son and my awsome fiancé both have one.

My only critique? Maybe pick a place with a better track record of credit card leaks.

2

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Id probably go into the local store even if I pay more.

3

u/TheBulletBuddy May 27 '26

Ive got both a 10/22 and tm22, ruger is definitely more reliable and has more options for aftermarket, but the 16 inch barrel tm22 pro model is a blast. Ive been using it more than my ruger lately.

Dont get the plastic tm22s though, go metal and you won't regret it. The plastic ones are too flimsy in the long run.

3

u/Camwise_Gamgee May 28 '26

Well mine didnt function out of the box, and derya didn't do anything about it. Not a company ill buy from again. Decent looking paper weight now though

2

u/truthspeakslouder May 27 '26

Best for what? Plinking/range, small game, etc etc? You wanna LARP etc?

10/22 has customizable options up the yin yang and is a reliable mag fed semi option.

I like bolt action for using a lotta subsonic for varmint control in my rural area/property. I like my Marlin 60 for semi cuz tube fed/don't gotta mess w removable magazines and I don't have a need to customize.

0

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Plinking/range fun, cheap ammo type of gun

2

u/Lumindan May 27 '26

Get a 10/22 instead.

2

u/Flashy_Inspector115 May 27 '26

Built like a plastic nerf gun. Go for the aluminum version.

2

u/blueline731 May 27 '26

Go for aluminum or a 10/22. I wouldn’t recommend the full plastic version.

2

u/itsagrapefruit May 27 '26

The best .22 option is just to buy all of them.

1

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Collect them all indeed.

2

u/BrotherLefthand May 27 '26

Ur an idiot, hoss.

If you want quality, get a Bergara BXR. It's everything you would want in a built 10/22 without the cost of building a 10/22.

If you got money to blow, an SBI ST22 build is absolutely worth the money.

1

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Bergara kinda beats the "cheap ammo/rifle to play with argument" however I cant deny the quality.

3

u/BrotherLefthand May 27 '26

You didn't specify a budget.

TM22 pro will be good if you just want cheap.

2

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

A good poverty spec.

2

u/Wise-Capital9455 May 27 '26

The best .22 semi is the 10/22 but that’s just my opinion

2

u/conanap May 27 '26

+1 on getting the aluminum ones. They’re very good and I thought was worth the money, AND they come in various lengths.

1

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Finally I can choose the length on something 🤣

2

u/R3NAM3R123 May 27 '26

I got the Derya TM22 Flash when it came out and it’s a solid plinker! If you don’t care much about it being all polymer (only the barrel, bolt and trigger group are metal) then it’s a solid option for a cheap tacticool .22 rifle. With its polymer body it feels light but not cheap. Like others have said, there’s also the aluminum version and the Ruger 10/22 which are solid options as well.

2

u/Lopsided_Ad3516 May 28 '26

I have the Feather. Only issue was the left side extractor claw and I removed it. Flawless since then.

2

u/therowdyirishman May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26

The TM22 is a better "modern sporting rifle" than the 10/22. No amount of aftermarket spending (eg chassis, new trigger, etc) can change this because it's the actual control layout that's the issue. The TM is a phenemonal value for running shooting drills or just doing some tactical plinking. I prefer it to the GSGs that came before it, my 10/22 build and any other semi auto 22 I've used for shooting drills... With the exception of an AR + conversion kit.

Here's the posts of my 10/22TD and TM22. I kitted both of these out to serve as AR trainers. The 10/22 has been coverted back into a more streamlined TD style rifle because the TM is simply way better suited for carbine drills and training. https://www.reddit.com/r/canadaguns/s/ey4Knm2Klk https://www.reddit.com/r/canadaguns/s/ENwz8VKzn8

u/FlySpecial6091 May 28 '26

I enjoy my derya tm22 alot worth the 650 cad

2

u/Response-Cheap May 27 '26

All metal TM22 is the best option, unless you want to spend a couple grand playing 10/22 Lego.

Bare bones 10/22 carbine is ass. So unless you want to basically build a firearm from scratch, loosely based on the 10/22, TM22 is the way.

1

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Are the 10/22s that bad out of the box?

5

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 May 27 '26

Are the 10/22s that bad out of the box?

No, they're fine, just boring 😂

If you want to tacti-cool a 10/22, a stock starts at about $250 for a plastic one, and the sky is the limit for higher end stocks and chassis.

Building a 10/22 is a nice rabbit hole project for the summer however.

2

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Im trying to avoid the rabbit hole for a semi auto. I would consider for a bolt "accuracy" build.

1

u/Response-Cheap May 27 '26

The irons suck, and the trigger sucks. The rest is a matter of taste. Whether you want to build a precision rifle or a tacticool rifle, you're going to have to change the guts out.. The cheapest bare bones 10/22 carbine in standard configuration is not a great gun. It works. That's about it..

I wanted to buy a 10/22 and keep it stock and use the irons. Tried one. Changed my mind real quick.

2

u/Q-Ball7 In the end, it's taxes all the way down May 27 '26

The TM-22 Cadet offers you the same thing the standard 10/22 does at half the price. (This is including the adapter dingus you have to buy to use mags that aren't shit or 10 rounds, though I repeat myself.)

The TM-22 Pro offers you the same thing the SBI 10/22 does at half the price.

It's absolutely possible to build a 10/22 that's better in every way than the TM-22 (you can buy yourself a lightweight chassis, a 12" carbon fiber barrel, and a 500 dollar trigger), but it'll also cost you 2000 dollars. Unless you think you're going to do that, the other gun's the better deal.

1

u/Response-Cheap May 27 '26

The straight factory ones are imo. Iron sights suck, trigger sucks, I'm not a fan of the mags.. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'm sure some fudd will say they're great, but imo, my TM22 is 1000x better than the base model 10/22.

Not to say you can't build an epic one.. But then you're basically replacing 98% of the parts with expensive performance parts..

2

u/BuyRelevant1000 May 27 '26

I like these better than the 10/22s. 10/22s are overpriced for what you get. Even the cheapest Carbine version with no sights, fisher price stock etc was this price if not more. Then you need to mod the bolt release which should come from the factory but I digress.  I sold my 10/22 to get a 457, and while they are very different use cases, I wouldn't buy a 10/22 again when the TM22 is available for this price.

1

u/General_Friendship87 May 27 '26

That is plastic gunk

1

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Fair, what would you recommend?

3

u/Tricky-Poem-5585 May 27 '26

Get the 12 inch model

2

u/syspak May 27 '26

Yes exactly this move.

Then get the top mount charging handle from Alex home brew

Then get the GSG16 drum mag adapter from Tommy enterprise

Then you've got a little 12" barrel plinker with 110 round drum mag it's sick.

I've got 2 tm22's a 10" and a 12"

Both have the top mount charging handle and both can run the GSG 16 drum mag.

2

u/General_Friendship87 May 27 '26

Spend bit more and buy the pro version with extended rail. It feels and handles much better.

1

u/Latter_Range1974 May 27 '26

Ordered few days ago. Receiving today and am excited

1

u/TwoWheelsNorth May 27 '26

Let me know how it goes if you get a moment.

1

u/Zeziml99 May 27 '26

You know you'd rather the TM22, I'd fully reccomend https://www.reddit.com/r/canadaguns/s/w9f8o3qCJD

1

u/SmokePokeFloat May 27 '26

General consensus seems to be 1022 however, there’s many different models of the 1022. Or prebuilt customized.. any must have modifications? I saw the carbon fibre version and I wanted that but unfortunately, no longer available from anywhere I can find.

1

u/BlandRusk06 May 27 '26

'Best' is hard to define. In terms of quality and moddability, the Ruger 10/22 is the best choice, and is also pretty cheap (it starts at $400). The TM22 definitely looks nicer, but can sometimes have feeding and ejection issues (decreased by thoroughly cleaning and lubing the internals, and/or removing one extractor). The TM22 also comes in several models, some of which have plastic chassis and barrel shrouds, so do your research before you buy. It does have 25-rd mags available, and they are not pinned like the Ruger mags. The Adler Arms RF224 is not too well reviewed, although it doesn't look bad.

I myself bought the TM22 Feather (the cheapest plastic option in the M4A1 config), and I am pretty happy. You will need to add a sight or scope to it, though. I don't think the stock sights are much good.

1

u/Neat_Imagination2503 May 27 '26

I prefer my Ruger 10/22 over my tm22 and it’s not even close

1

u/BustDownBreacher1301 May 28 '26

Entire gun is plastic

1

u/NostalgicAlee May 28 '26

TM22 is so fun imo

1

u/Lobsterstarfish May 28 '26

10/22 all day! Just throw a proof research and get one of them frts ;)

1

u/gregarious01 May 28 '26

Tm22 pro is great. It has been thoroughly enjoyed at the range with a good Red dot and has a definite tacticool feel to it. Doesn't need much added to it. Red dot angled for grip and maybe some goofy accessories and you are all set.

1

u/Franksredsilverado May 28 '26

Best option is 10/22. Almost endless modifications. More reliable.

2

u/PantherActual Jun 06 '26

The magazine is ugly 😂

I was looking at the S&W MP 15 22 buts thats no longer an option.

1

u/That_Trip_5071 May 27 '26

Tikka t1x or a CZ 457 both are way better built than the Turkish rifles

1

u/BuyRelevant1000 May 27 '26

While I agree, those are precision rifles, for mag-blasting at the range to remember the days of AR's, these semi's are better suited. No question on the build quality though. I sold a few rifles to buy my 457 and it's heirloom quality.
