Feets / Collection / My build First (and hopefully not last) Pistol
Got my 22 exemption recently and had the joy of picking up this puppy in the mail. Any pointers for someone new to pistol shooting?

Oh man I want this one so badly. I’m trying to convince my friend’s dad to get an ATT for me for his, because he never uses it. Jealous 💯
Only advice is use good quality ammo with it. Our club has several of these and they are all beaten up because people use cheap ammo.

u/KamadoCrusher May 01 '26
For Accuracy I've found the CCI minimags are the best. I don't know how using cheap ammo would beat up your pistol. I've used everything I could buy in mine for day to day shooting with the kids I use whatever is cheapest.

u/Inside-Profile-5865 May 01 '26
Come to my club and try all the Ruger Hunters we have. You’ll see 😆😆😆. They do their best to keep them clean and in service, but I’m happy I have my own gear.
I’m a fan of the CCI mini mag too. Tried the Aguila and had failures every 2-3 shots on our club firearms.

Edit: Leaving to preserve thread, but this is incorrect. You do need to obtain a specific ATT yourself in order to borrow and transport someone else’s restricted firearms.
As long as you have your RPAL, you don’t need an ATT to borrow and transport a handgun to an approved range. Just make sure you get the paperwork with it and follow appropriate transportation protocol.
4
u/16gaugeguy16 May 01 '26
Not the case, sadly. An ATT is required to transport a handgun not registered to the owner with a standard RPAL
0
u/ChaseJulien May 01 '26
Sorry, but could you clarify why you believe this not to be true, ignoring OP’s specific scenario in which OP is correct that they need an ATT due to the firearm not returning to it’s registered storage location?
According to
https://rcmp.ca/en/firearms/classes-firearms/classes-firearms-canada#s4
restricted firearms may be borrowed as long as the borrower has the appropriate license for the firearm being borrowed and registration paperwork is kept with the borrowed firearm.
Also
an ATT is not needed for transport of a restricted firearm as long as it is being transported from its registered storage location to an approved range within a single province and then returned.
3
u/chillyrabbit May 01 '26
The RCMP is not a legal guide or source. They may have helpful guides but that is inaccurate, and misses key context.
You always need an ATT to transport and possess a restricted firearm its just that the changes referenced to the "automatic ATT" means you don't have to apply for one as you are automatically granted one.
But in this case you aren't the firearms owner, he is. You don't personally have an ATT that says you can do that.
Like because that would be the weirdest loophole in the law that people had to fight decades for. That the one trick around not needing an ATT for a restricted firearm is to borrow a firearm.
1
u/ChaseJulien May 01 '26
I’m sorry, I must be missing something. If an RPAL comes with a default ATT, how does that not apply to borrowed firearms? Can you link an explanation? I’ve had my RPAL for a while so maybe I missed something in all the changes that have gone on recently. I thought my ATT covered any restricted, owned or not.

First Criminal code
Possession at unauthorized place
93 (1) Subject to subsection (3), every person commits an offence who, being the holder of an authorization or a licence under which the person may possess a prohibited firearm, a restricted firearm, a non-restricted firearm, a prohibited weapon, a restricted weapon, a prohibited device or prohibited ammunition, possesses them at a place that is
(a) indicated on the authorization or licence as being a place where the person may not possess it;
(b) other than a place indicated on the authorization or licence as being a place where the person may possess it; or
(c) other than a place where it may be possessed under the Firearms Act.
You are breaking the law if you have a RPAL and possess a restricted firearm other than a place you are authorized to possess it (the ATT).
By default the Firearms act only mandates one place you are always allowed to possess it, your dwelling house. Specifically the dwelling home of the person who legally owns it, the registered owner.
Places where prohibited and restricted firearms may be possessed
17 Subject to sections 19 and 20, a prohibited firearm or restricted firearm, the holder of the registration certificate for which is an individual, may be possessed only at the dwelling-house of the individual, as recorded in the Canadian Firearms Registry, or at a place authorized by a chief firearms officer.
But in all other cases.
Transporting and using prohibited firearms or restricted firearms
19 (1) An individual who holds a licence authorizing the individual to possess prohibited firearms or restricted firearms may be authorized to transport a particular prohibited firearm or restricted firearm between two or more specified places for any good and sufficient reason, including, without restricting the generality of the foregoing,
(a) for use in target practice, or a target shooting competition, under specified conditions or under the auspices of a shooting club or shooting range that is approved under section 29;
The key word there being "may be", and "a particular" restricted firearm. I don't know everyone's ATT but most ATT's are specific that you are authorized to transport firearms registered to you.
A picture I pulled from CGN, that shows the most typical ATT paper conditions. It is a pre C-71 license conditions sheet (as it shows him authorized to transport to a gun show)
https://i.imgur.com/HT4vixh.jpeg
But the key wording you need to take away from the Automatic ATT that he received, and that most people have is:
These license conditions authorize the transport of restricted and/or prohibited firearms registered to the license holder within their province of residence by (blur) that in all circumstances reasonably direct for the specific related purpose.
Transport of restricted firearms possessed for the purpose of target practice to and from all shooting clubs and ranges approved under section 29 Firearms act.
Now some people may have a different ATT but this is an example of a fairly typical Automatic ATT sheet (albeit from pre C-71, but very similar)
1
u/ChaseJulien May 01 '26
You are correct, confirmed with CFO. You need to obtain a specific ATT yourself in order to transport a borrowed restricted firearm.
I think I was interpreting the two statements on the automatic ATT as separate in that the first sentence was allowing the firearm itself to be moved around and the second sentence was permission for the RPAL holder to move any restricted firearm in their possession. Thanks for the explanations.
1
u/16gaugeguy16 May 01 '26
This is the exact kind of explanation that I was too lazy to type out lol. Thank you
1
u/Inside-Profile-5865 May 01 '26
The owner lives far away. I’d need an ATT to store it at my house.

Very nice! The Mk4 is a huge step-up from Mk2 in terms of disassembly and cleaning! These are such beautifully accurate pistols for the price!
3
u/16gaugeguy16 May 01 '26
Love the MK4, but honestly I liked the MK2 just as much and it was half the price. Once you get use to disassembling them a few times it becomes easy

I'd like some direction on this. I am from BC

Get the right stance first. Be square on the target with feet shoulder-width apart - you can favor your dominant side slightly. Lean slightly forward (the inclination matters more when you shoot more powerful pistols but the principle you should practice). Bend your knees a bit so that you are not so static that you sway. The stance helps you cushion any recoil - which won't be much anyway with this one.
Bring the pistol up to your eyes, don't try to hunch down toward the sights. You will naturally do that anyway so this prevents you from hunching too much.
Get the right grip. The thumbs forward two-handed grip is needed more for a pistol with more power (that Ruger you can easily shoot single handed) but it is good to get the right two-hand grip anyway for when you might use a 9mm. This is what they teach you for IPSC. That grip gives you good control of the different axes that will move when you shoot. It feels weird at first but after a lot of practice it becomes second nature. Try to grip as firm as you can without shaking.
Practice pulling the trigger straight back. Where you put the trigger on your index depends on the size of your hand. For me it is on the right edge of the first pad.
Here is a good video (except the shooter is left-handed so it looks weird at first) explaining it.
Another guide to locking down shooting is to get a red dot on it. The dot makes it very noticeable when you are shaking and how long it takes you to align on the target. You can practice at home - obviously without ammo - just with a red dot and a target pasted on your wall. But before you put a dot on it, get good with the iron sights which are great on this pistol.
At the range start with targets placed as close as possible and then keep practicing until you can comfortably put all your shots in a center cluster, then move the targets out further and further. Don't feel silly if you are bad even up close. It takes practice.
When you get accurate with bullseye shooting, you can have a lot of fun setting up steel targets. And if you can find a range that does Steel Challenge, that's the sport for you.
None of this advice is as good as getting in person coaching.
1
u/LukeWarmAmalade May 01 '26
Thanks for all the advice man, I’d love in person coaching but my range is in the middle of nowhere. Can’t wait to get some trigger time behind it!

How do you even buy one? All of the stores near me got rid of their pistol stocks long ago. They still have some bb/pellet pistols, but that's it. Do you have to put in a special order with your exemption letter from your club attached? How does it feel to transport something you know will cause a headache with any rcmp who catch you with it? What are you planning on doing if you get pulled over with it? Just show them a copy of your letter and ATT like before the freeze and hope the cop knows the current lay of the law (or lack thereof)?
3
u/LukeWarmAmalade May 01 '26
I mean they can’t see when I bought it, so if I get pulled over its no different than anyone who bought their handgun before the freeze I think. I found a store with one in stock because they actually commented on another post here saying they had some (CRAFM)

u/BlandRusk06 May 01 '26
Well done, man! I would love to get one as well. I also live in BC, in Surrey. Can you tell me where I can find a club to join, train, and get an exemption letter? Thank you.
1
u/LukeWarmAmalade May 01 '26
You don’t need to train prior to get the handgun, you join the bctsa and they issue you a letter if you are intending to train. How could you train without one is their philosophy I guess-which is good, that makes sense

u/LukeWarmAmalade May 01 '26
Ok so probably should have put this in the main description of the post. The procedure I followed goes as follows. 1.) Join the Bctsa (sfc if you’re from out of bc, some other provinces may require you attend matches before they issue you an exemption, I’m unsure) 2.)fill out the exemption letter request form detailing your circumstances and which handgun you want and the calibre ( a coach needs to sign for non 22s) 3.)Wait for them to email you the exemption letter. 4.) find a gun to buy and email the exemption letter to the cfo prior to initiating the transfer 5.) wait for a bit and boom. Wasn’t a crazy complex process but I guess it hasn’t really been outlined much here before
2
u/Vintage_Pieces_10 May 01 '26
How did you fill out the coach section of BCTSA’s requirement for an exemption? Do you have a coach? (The part in question reads: Is Coached by a NCCP Certified Pistol Coach)
3
u/LukeWarmAmalade May 02 '26
I don’t have a coach and I emailed for clarification as I had your same confusion. They said it wasn’t necessary
1
u/number75 May 01 '26
Thanks for posting this. Did you have to be on a team or a part of the SFC at all to get the exemption letter? Were there any particular preferences or requirements for what type of 22 pistol you could get?
2
u/LukeWarmAmalade May 02 '26
I don’t think so, I’ve heard of people getting pretty much whatever 22 they want. The website for the bctsa clarifies that entry level options are allowed so they don’t need to be fancy target guns. I also didn’t have to be on a team but paid for my sfc membership because I thought you needed both.

Submitted my C-21 exemption letter April 3. Confirmed received and awaiting seller to send information April 10. Baked ever week since, still waiting for exemption to be processed.
Have reference number, iterate it reach time I call. It's in process, on desk, in Pike waiting to be assessed. Today I was told to call back in 2-3 weeks...

Firstly you really shouldn't be putting your toes in your mouth.
Secondly you may have a use for these torture devices: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B084RQPR36

Is this an Olympic exemption? Is the exemption specific to calibre? Are you limited to one firearm or only that calibre and action (semi vs SA/DA revolver)?
1
u/LukeWarmAmalade May 01 '26
It is an Olympic exemption, was a simple process at least in bc, looking forward to training in it. Put more details in a comment on the main thread
1
u/LukeWarmAmalade May 02 '26
Also pretty sure you can get multiple firearms but you need to get multiple exemption letters, limited to 22 though.

IM SORRY WHAT IS A .22 EXEMPTION AND HOW DO I GET IT
2
u/LukeWarmAmalade May 02 '26
You can get an exemption to buy a 22 pistol if you partake in an Olympic shooting discipline (train for, compete in, or desire to compete in). You don’t need to be good, just wanting to compete/train. Depending on your provinces there are different regulatory bodies for it. The sfc covers most of Canada, the bctsa covers bc. Not sure about what else

It makes a bigger hole in paper sure but this hits harder for steel or other hard targets, as of now can’t get either of those, maybe the 45 with a wilderness atc
