These people are actually convinced that gun laws (and only gun laws) are magical and somehow make guns vanish from thin air, therefore preventing shootings.

This is the fundamental fallacy of the left.
They have so much faith and belief in the state that they literally cannot comprehend disobeying the state. It's the same radical lack of comprehension that turns people into religious extremists, they're just prostrating themselves at the altar of government, not God.

Particularly when there are well known routes for people to acquire illegal firearms. Routes that, maybe can never be fully closed (see: War On Drugs), but certainly can be tackled and effectively controlled.

It’s interesting how laws influence public perception. Here people have a hard time understanding a need for suppressors outside of crime, yet we’re the only country I can name where they are illegal.
4
u/pukalo_ Mar 02 '26
fun fact: suppressors were banned before full autos were.
3
u/DonAzuld Mar 02 '26
Do you know what the reason was? I’ve never found any info on it.
3
u/Cre_AK47 Name Prohibited by OIC Mar 02 '26
"Because that's what spys use. I saw it in a movie one time!" - P.E.T, probably....
3
u/DonAzuld Mar 02 '26
Now that you mention it John Wick killed like 30 dudes with one. He would have gotten killed off in the first act without a suppressor.
2
u/pukalo_ Mar 02 '26
Lawmakers fooled by hollywood myths.
3
u/m_mensrea Mar 03 '26
The biggest one being that suppressors make all guns shoot quieter than a mouse fart. Even with suppressors most centre fire rifles and pistols require hearing protection.
3
u/Cre_AK47 Name Prohibited by OIC Mar 02 '26
Funny enough, that restriction shouldn't have been long-lasting. I have a newspaper archive somewhere on my computer that said in 1978 that the liberal justice minister reversed that prohibition and made the AR-15, if it otherwise meet the overall non-restricted requirements, could remain non-restricted and be used for hunting between 1978 until 1992.
It wasn't restricted again by name until 1992. Originally proposed to be banned in 1995 but maintain its restricted status after lobbying efforts.
24
u/_Pray_To_RNGesus_ Mar 02 '26
The one i hate the most is "if it saves even one life,".
18
u/Florida_Man42069 Mar 02 '26
“We need to protect women from domestic violence”
has this idea that men who abuse women will for some reason voluntarily surrender their intimidating weapons with no questions asked
5
u/_Pray_To_RNGesus_ Mar 02 '26
I never really understood that one. It makes no sense at all, since on average, men are stronger than women. So getting rid of guns wouldn't prevent anything.
9
u/gspotcowboy Mar 02 '26
Tell them we should install breathalyzers into every new car and also limit their speed to 50kph and it would save thousands of lives a year. See how quick their eyes roll lol
2
u/HappyCan7250 Mar 02 '26
Honestly though, some Liberals are so desperate to be government and regulated, they might go for it. Don't give them any ideas! (Only half kidding too sadly)
6
u/FunkyFrunkle Mar 02 '26
Right?
Okay, let’s also ban:
Drinking
Motorcycles
Contact sports
Junk food of all kinds
Tobacco
Sports cars
Snowmobiles
ATV’s
Knives
Forks
Hammers
Spoons
Crowbars
Lug wrenches
Pipe wrenches
Peanut butter
And much more!
5
u/gamercast1337 Mar 02 '26
Hit em with "okay stop pushing highly processed slop food and fat acceptance, and stop being so fat to save a life" and they got batshit insane lmao
3
u/madbuilder Mar 02 '26
Guns save a lot of lives. That's why these types want more guns in the hands of government.

You joke... I wouldn't be surprised if they actually considered sending those GSG-16 to Ukraine.
6
u/Admirable-Site7256 Mar 02 '26
The best part is, they tried to!
And when the Ukrainians declined after finding out all they would be getting were random civilian sport rifles, the Liberals quietly shuffled that embarrassment under the rug.

This is painfully accurate, but you forgot
-probably lives Montreal
-why don’t you join the army if you love guns so much.
24
u/Florida_Man42069 Mar 01 '26
This is just the starter pack. The further you get into this delusion, the worse you get. Some of the funniest things I’ve heard are:
“Grenade bans work, why don’t we do the same with guns?”
“You say criminals cause gun crimes, but if you don’t comply, that makes YOU a criminal!”
“There are mass shooters everywhere, we need to ban assault weapons….. What? No we don’t need weapons to defend ourselves, Canada is safe!”
11
3
u/Longjumping_Deer3006 Mar 02 '26
why don’t you join the army if you love guns so much.
Some people are just not cut out for the military.
Also these anti gunners think that we can defend ourselves from America. Yeah right, just look at what the US did in Iran recently.

u/Kaffarov .40 Salt&Walnuts Mar 01 '26

“My grandpa never needed a 30 bullet clip for deer, he had a wood gun.”
7
Mar 02 '26
he used his reliable break action 22 guage with 3 round clip.
5
u/DonAzuld Mar 02 '26
I’ve never seen anyone on the news commit a crime with one of those so they must be ok.
4
u/HappyCan7250 Mar 02 '26
Too bad they banned "wood guns" too. Lots of them. Mini 14, mini 30, and a bazillion different models of M1 carbines, M14, all the high powered single shot and bolt guns.
It really is a constantly shifting goal posts. M1 Carbine was a decent rifle for small game and varmints. It's not even an assault RIFLE it was an "assault" carbine! Not even the carbines are safe from being labelled as assault rifles!
5
u/DonAzuld Mar 02 '26
I remember when the 2020 OIC came in I scoffed at people who started panic selling their 9mm carbines out of fear they would be banned.
Boy was I wrong. They even came for SVT-40s.
3
u/Cre_AK47 Name Prohibited by OIC Mar 02 '26
"As a hunter, I don't see the need for anyone to have an Automatic Rifle 15 to go deer hunting."
Back in the day, I used to run into so many of those typical tropes on Twitter.
9
u/ealeeyuh Mar 02 '26
Don’t forget how all their examples of “good gun control” come from islands (japan, uk, australia) without considering that we live next to the largest firearms market with a 99% unsupervised border.
21
u/Ov3rReadKn1ght0wl Mar 01 '26
"If we don't ban these, we'll become like the US!"
"Criminals can't shoot you if they don't have a gun."
"You don't need an AR15 to hunt."
All of these are spot on. I'd also like to add "Totally into Indigenous issues on social media."
13
u/HaloReachEnjoyer9 Mar 01 '26
Totally into indigenous issues but would never give up the house their boomer parents left them
13

u/Big-Guitar-1979 Mar 02 '26
Agreed. But I can do nothing about it 🤷
5
u/mwmwmwmwmmdw Mar 02 '26
if someone says "you cant even own guns in canada" or "i think assault rifles are bad" chances are they just have no idea about the laws or how guns work and just go on what our media tells them. those people can usually be educated and slowly coaxed into eventually coming on a range trip with you
if someone says "i dont want us to be those maga cultists who fetishes guns to make mens penises feel bigger" then no you arent going to change their mind and they are happy to wallow in their ignorance.
also politically speaking the former group tends to be the swing voters in suburban ridings that decide elections while the latter group is the staunch diehard liberal/NDP voters and arent swinging anything for anyone.
3
u/Noah_S_Schwartz Mar 02 '26
Can't blame people for not knowing what they don't know, or being turned off by the madness south of the border. Gotta show people that reasonable gun regulations are not a left-right issue.
5
u/Western1888 Mar 02 '26
I loose braincells against these people. Just simply explain how a gun fire a bullet and they look at you like they discovered fire. "Really? It's not about the look of the gun?!" I swear they are retarded

Daily reminder that the elbows up movement is about supporting Canadian businesses and products, something that should be non-partisan.
If you have a negative perception and like to sarcastically crack jokes about it, its because your algorithm has exposed you to American/Russian propaganda and you bought it, and are now doing their work for them by actively trying to shit on the movement
21
u/Hot_Piano_4387 Mar 01 '26
What an absurd take, it was an LPC campaign slogan that morphed into a dog whistle for boomers and LPC sycophants. It also helped our Canadian corporate monopolies ramp up price gouging because "patriotism". Now your grocery prices are up 7% per month and anyone that criticises this is somehow anti-Canadian.
-4
u/HootieHO Mar 02 '26
Coined by Mike Myers on SNL and gained momentum as grass roots effort from there.
Of course co-opted by goofy politicians, both left and right.
This effort and slogan has virtually nothing to do with the corporate price gouging that has been going on for years, and would be almost objectively worse under the even more corporate favouring conservatives...
7
u/Shitmonkey5425 Mar 02 '26
Mike Myers is the last thing I think of when I hear Canadian treasure or am feeling like a proud Canadian lol it’s all so goofy
8
u/Hot_Piano_4387 Mar 02 '26
"Coined by Mike Myers on SNL and gained momentum as grass roots effort from there"
Yes it's a well known hockey term that was used by the LPC in a campaign video featuring Mike Meters and Mark Carney. This proves my point.
"the corporate price gouging that has been going on for years, and would be almost objectively worse under the even more corporate favouring conservatives"
We aren't in that situation, the LPC has been in power for the last ten years.
-2
u/HootieHO Mar 02 '26
Continue to attempt to bend around the points I'm making. You either know them to be true, or you're to stupid as to waste my time responding
9
u/Hot_Piano_4387 Mar 02 '26
What point are you making?
-1
u/HootieHO Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26
Overall? That insulting the elbows up movement is harmful to the Canadian economy, and potentially our sovereignty.
To your last comment specifically?
That you are objectively wrong that its a Liberal or Carney slogan. Sure, he used it to gain political support, just as many politicians did, including Doug Ford.
Also that your complaints and connections of elbows up to the last decade of price gouging (primarly began with COVID), has anything to do with each other, or that the same price gouging you're complaining about wouldn't WITH CERTAINTY, be worse under the government who consistently further prioritizes corporate profits even more than the Liberals do
6
u/Hot_Piano_4387 Mar 02 '26
"That you are objectively wrong that it's a Liberal or Carney slogan. Sure, he used it to gain political support, just as many politicians did, including Doug Ford."
I don't live in Ontario or care about Doug Ford. The second part of your statement here contradicts the first. Thank you for illustrating my point.
Again, the conservatives aren't in power. Your last point is speculative and irrelevant because the liberals are currently in power. Thanks in part to their brilliant "elbows up" ad buy.
1
u/HootieHO Mar 02 '26
Feel free to read my other comments if you still don't understand.
Yes its speculative in the way that I speculate the sun will rise tomorrow...take care man, have a good night
4
-11
u/VanillaHighlights Mar 01 '26
It didn't get morphed, it got mocked and twisted by Conservatives.
6
u/Hot_Piano_4387 Mar 02 '26
Do you not remember the campaign video of Meyers and Carney at the hockey arena? It literally had a disclaimer at the end that tags it as political advertising in the service of the LPC election campaign.
Not sure what conservatives have to do with this.
1
u/HootieHO Mar 02 '26
It began with people disgusted with the US annexation threats being awoken to the importance to buy Canadian. It had no name at this time.
Eventually Mike Myers mouthed Elbows Up on a SNL outro.
Later, Carney capitalized on the popularity of the movement and used it as a slogan.
Following that, Mike Myers agreed to do a political ad with Carney because he believed what the VAST majority of Canadians believed in that moment; that Carney was far better equipped to handle the moment our country was facing.
Again, none of this negates the importance of the movement, and none of it excuses the brain dead butthurt conservative attempts to undermine it.
5
u/Hot_Piano_4387 Mar 02 '26
I was responding to the other user but I'll address your other comment here.
From what I can tell the point you are trying to make is that it was a non-partisan slogan. I believe we've shown that this is incorrect by pointing out that the slogan was used to bolster support for Carney during the election using campaign ads bought by the Liberal Party of Canada.
1
u/HootieHO Mar 02 '26
As I've said elsewhere, if something is happening, and a politician attempts to capitalize on the popularity of that thing, do they now own it, and all previous good done by it is erased from reality? Should we stop doing the thing that is objectively good and helpful because a politician we don't like has co-opted a slogan?
Second, many conservative leaders also jumped on the bandwagon.
Third, imagine if Millhouse had done so and also adopted the slogan instead of stalling and towing the line for so long and throwing away the election. He may have actually won as originally projected.
5
u/Hot_Piano_4387 Mar 02 '26
Both the SNL episode and the Carney ad buy came out in March of last year. If you're trying to separate the two sure, you're allowed to do that. Either way by the end of March it's still a LPC ad buy, that's not up for debate.
I think I already illustrated one thing about the movement that is not good. Whether we agree with the ad buy or not, it's certainly okay to question our support for it. It's especially ok to hold government accountable.
Your preoccupation with the conservatives is your own thing. Not sure what else to say other than remind you that they aren't the ones in power. The LPC formed government, our criticisms towards government should be directed towards them.

u/VanillaHighlights Mar 02 '26

Not the Russian bot cope lmao the Russians can’t even win a war against the most corrupt country in europe but somehow they have this sophisticated bot network influencing the thoughts and minds of every western country.
Calling everyone you don’t agree with a Russian bot or nazi isn’t going to change anyone’s mind, it’s doing more harm than good. This refusal to acknowledge anyone else’s opinions or beliefs is why the left wing is losing the culture war
3
2
u/HootieHO Mar 02 '26
Hey, funny I type russian and here you are, a 1 day old account, coming to defend Russian bots? Super funny and clearly not the exact type of psyop propaganda I'm referring to
8
u/HaloReachEnjoyer9 Mar 02 '26
If I truly was a Russian bot would I be making fun of them for not being able to win a war against Ukraine? Just delusional lmao Russia is done as a political adversary after their showing in Ukraine they clearly are too drunk to do anything
-5
u/HootieHO Mar 02 '26
Well when your comments make you indistinguishable from what bots would say it doesn't really matter to the world of you are or aren't.
But yeah, also "casually" framing Ukraine as the most corrupt country is precisely what a Russian bot would do. Attempting to make Russia look harmless is probably also what a Russian bot would do.
Done arguing with bot/bot level intelligence human programmed with things to say by bots
-1

I'll wear the downvotes of bots and morons like a badge of honour my friend. I made my original post knowing it was destined for downvotes.

15
u/Florida_Man42069 Mar 01 '26
This was literally the liberal government’s slogan in the 2025 election. They made it political.
The liberal government is the only party that actually supports this ban. The Conservatives and NDP are both actively against this.
As for supporting Canadian businesses, that is something that is non partisan. If I were to write “buy Canadian” then go ahead, criticize me. But don’t come after me after I literally used the Liberal’s slogan.
-1
u/HootieHO Mar 02 '26
If 20 million people engage in an activity that helps our country, and then some politicians capitalize on its popularity to curry votes, does that negate the value of the original activism?
Does being sarcastic, and attempting to attack the premise of the movement likely lead to some people losing hope or effort in this cause?
First one is no, second one is yes.
It's why I'm commenting. Commenting to help dispel propaganda and try to unite Canadians in a inargueably important cause for our nation isn't "coming after you". Perhaps it's feels that way on your side of the propaganda.
I've nothing more to say, take care brother
6
u/Hot_Piano_4387 Mar 02 '26

Why is elbows up on here...?
Why do conservative Canadians hate the idea of defending our sovereignty by supporting our own economy...?
5
u/mwmwmwmwmmdw Mar 02 '26
the elbows up people online tend to be liberal party partisans who only care about thumbing their nose at orange man. carney is running around signing non-binding deals that will just make huge companies and other neo-liberals happy while doing nothing to help the average citizen. but it makes trump mad when he does this so the elbows up people on other subreddits clap like seals for it
not to mention all the "elbows up" politcians who immediatly left the country for cushy jobs as soon as they could.
6
u/splooges Mar 02 '26
"Elbows up" is not logically consistent with a multi-billion dollar gun ban targeting only legal gun owners.
-3
u/Ok-Regret6767 Mar 02 '26
Elbows up is about protecting our country from economic attacks that aim to weaken our sovereignty.
It has no relation to the gunban or waste of tax payer dollars...
7
u/splooges Mar 02 '26
It has no relation to the gunban or waste of tax payer dollars...
"Elbows Up" included military and guerrilla style rhetoric about driving off any American invasion of Canada, and to pretend otherwise or deny it is disingenuous.
Furthermore, "Elbows Up" itself may have no direct relation to the gun ban, but given that the Liberals campaigned on the slogan while also campaigning on the gun ban, any one with two brain cells can spot the rational incongruency. Except you, apparently.
-3
u/Ok-Regret6767 Mar 02 '26
"Elbows Up" included military and guerrilla style rhetoric about driving off any American invasion of Canada, and to pretend otherwise or deny it is disingenuous
There has been minimal serious discussion or effort into preparing for American military invasion of Canada.
Also given the conservative support for 51st state concept I'm not sure how you think civilian gun ownership by primarily conservatives will exactly help...
Campaigning on protecting canadas economic sovereignty and on banning specific firearms by model don't make the two subjects somehow related...
5
u/splooges Mar 02 '26
There has been minimal serious discussion or effort into preparing for American military invasion of Canada.
So minimal that there was talk about training 250,000 public service workers on military equipment lol. You can argue that it (the fight the invasion rhetoric) wasn't super serious, but it wasn't minimal, and "Elbows Up" wasn't super serious either.
Also given the conservative support for 51st state concept I'm not sure how you think civilian gun ownership by primarily conservatives will exactly help...
So you're now branding an entire demographic of Canadians as traitors because of some idiots? Lol
Campaigning on protecting canadas economic sovereignty and on banning specific firearms by model don't make the two subjects somehow related...
Virtually all semi autos centrefires were banned. It wasn't just "some specific firearms by model."
