It’s interesting how laws influence public perception. Here people have a hard time understanding a need for suppressors outside of crime, yet we’re the only country I can name where they are illegal.

fun fact: suppressors were banned before full autos were.

Do you know what the reason was? I’ve never found any info on it.

"Because that's what spys use. I saw it in a movie one time!" - P.E.T, probably....

Now that you mention it John Wick killed like 30 dudes with one. He would have gotten killed off in the first act without a suppressor.

Lawmakers fooled by hollywood myths.

The biggest one being that suppressors make all guns shoot quieter than a mouse fart. Even with suppressors most centre fire rifles and pistols require hearing protection.

Funny enough, that restriction shouldn't have been long-lasting. I have a newspaper archive somewhere on my computer that said in 1978 that the liberal justice minister reversed that prohibition and made the AR-15, if it otherwise meet the overall non-restricted requirements, could remain non-restricted and be used for hunting between 1978 until 1992.

It wasn't restricted again by name until 1992. Originally proposed to be banned in 1995 but maintain its restricted status after lobbying efforts.
